Caterham School’s Responsible Use Agreement
This policy is built around the idea that you, as students of Caterham School, will respect and
protect yourselves, the school, and the school community in your use of mobile technology.
Respect Yourself
I will not do, write, or publish anything using an internet-enabled device that I would not be prepared
to show to my parents, the headmaster or a future employer. I will choose usernames that are
appropriate, consider carefully what personal information I give out about my life, experiences and
relationships. I will not be obscene.
Protect Yourself
I will ensure that the images and information I author online do not put me at risk in any way. I will not
publish personal details, especially contact details or details of my specific location. I will not give out
details of my usernames or passwords to ANYONE, even as a favour to a friend. I will report any
abuse, attacks or misconduct aimed at me.
Respect Others
I will never use my device to bully, harass or upset other people. Jokes do not translate well to the
medium of the internet and can cause extraordinary upset even if it was not intended. I will show
respect in the choices of websites I choose to visit, ensuring that I do not view sites that offer
degrading, pornographic, racist or otherwise inappropriate content. I will never access the internet
using a logon that is not my own, or use a device which does not belong to me without explicit
permission. I will respect the laws of copyright and intellectual property and ensure that I reference
materials that I use when they are not my own.
Protect Others
I will report any abuse that I witness over the internet or sent between enabled-devices and will not
forward or share inappropriate content.
Respect Caterham School
I will always use my device as directed by my teachers and only for the purposes of learning.
Protect Caterham School
I will not post anything online that could bring the school into disrepute.
I recognize that the School has the right to confiscate and search devices if it has cause to
believe that a serious disciplinary or criminal breach has occurred. I also recognize that any
device I bring to school is entirely at my own risk and that Caterham School bears no
responsibility whatsoever for items lost or damaged on the premises.
I understand the ‘respect and protect’ policy regarding using my own mobile device in school and
agree to abide by the rules laid out above.
Inappropriate use
Pupils using devices inappropriately can expect to be punished. They may be forbidden to bring
devices to School for a set period or permanently. If lessons are disrupted or other pupils are
distressed the usual School sanctions will apply.
Cyber Bullying: Cyber bullying will be treated in the same way as any other type of bullying whether
it occurs in or out of School. Any instances of bullying will be dealt with firmly and sensitively. We
have an agreed anti-bullying policy. Our aim is to prevent bullying in any form. This requires pupils to
avoid any deliberate unkindness to another member of the community. It also requires anyone made
aware of any such behaviour to report it. The School is prepared to offer help and support to any
pupil but bullying will not be tolerated. Anyone who continues to bully will have their membership of
the school community reviewed by the Headmaster.
Respect for Property
All equipment should be clearly marked and care should be taken to lock away valuable equipment.
Pupils Should not lend or borrow devices.
Theft: If theft is detected pupils must expect to be either suspended or expelled.
Vandalism: Any damage (which includes graffiti) to someone else’s property be it a fellow pupil’s, a
teacher’s or the school’s property will be taken very seriously. Not only will the damage have to be
paid for, but a vandal must expect to be suspended or expelled.
