Celebrity Series
Executive Director
Gary Dunning
Dear Friends –
Looking back to 1938 and our first few seasons to follow, Celebrity Series featured artists like Rachmaninoff,
Marian Anderson, Kreisler, Horowitz, Ballet Russe De Monte Carlo, and Benny Goodman with Béla Bartók.
Bringing the world’s best performing artists to inspire and enrich Boston has been a tradition from our very
first days. For the 75th season, we have a rare opportunity both to celebrate our founding and to reflect on
how the founding principles of Celebrity Series inform our present, and shape our future.
We will pay tribute to our founder, pianist and impresario Aaron Richmond, by highlighting the art of the
piano. Marc-André Hamelin, one of the most celebrated pianists of our time, will curate a three-concert
series that explores modern pianism through his unique lens. We’ve also gathered a distinguished list
of pianists to demonstrate the broad range of music for piano; among them András Schiff performing his
signature Bach Project, jazz pianist/composer Vijay Iyer in a unique collaboration with former U.S. Poet
Laureate Robert Pinsky, and the adventurous Jason Moran presenting his contemporary take on Fats Waller’s
piano music from the golden era of jazz so in vogue at Celebrity Series’ founding.
Other engagements invite our audience to join our artists’ journey of discovery. Deborah Voigt will offer
a recital in Symphony Hall, plus—in the intimate setting of the Calderwood Pavilion—she’ll share a rare
presentation of her personal and moving Voigt Lessons. The Takács String Quartet explores their musical
heritage with the Bartók quartet cycle.
The season also reminds us of Celebrity Series’ role in shaping the careers of artists and the futures of the genres
we present. Ten artists will make their Boston debuts, including those highlighted on the Debut Series at the
Longy School of Music. Among season’s premieres is the East Coast premiere of Acis and Galatea, the newest
dance-opera created by the Mark Morris Dance Group and a Celebrity Series co-commission.
We want to invite the City and greater Boston to be part of our celebration through two unique, free, outdoor
events that will launch and conclude our season-long celebration: Play Me, I’m Yours!, the Boston street piano
festival, and Le Grand Continental; a public, collective dance performance in Copley Square. These are our way
of celebrating seventy-four great years of music and dance.
For that is the role I see Celebrity Series taking into the future: to invite everyone to participate in the arts—and
in the Celebrity Series experience—in new and engaging ways. Let’s mark our milestone by turning the entire city
into a season-long celebration of the performing arts!
easily morph into a jazz band”
“Our jazz-playing also helps
to inform our classical
performance. It enables us
