Santa Ana Summer Events

The Santa Ana History Room – Santa Ana’s 

Hidden Gem Local history has a little-known 

home in Santa Ana: The History Room in the 

Santa Ana Main Library. Since 1972, archivists, 

volunteers, and Santa Ana residents have been 

collecting books and other materials about the 

history of Santa Ana and making them available 

to everyone free of charge. The collection has: 

over 80 yearbooks, 600 maps, 65 individual col- 

graphs. 

2000 of these images are available online 

at the Santa Ana Public Library website. This is 

 

class of 1904 to compare to the class of 2004. 

You can see historical photos showing Santa 

Ana a hundred years ago; look through the 1915 

scrapbook of a Santa Ana teenager; study the his- 

 

buried where; follow the history of Santa Ana’s 

 

who used to live there. The Santa Ana History 

Room (SAHR) also has one of the most complete 

collections of the OC Register newspapers 

dating from the early 1900s, The collection is 

used by people from across the country looking 

for obituaries and stories of life in Santa Ana. 

The Santa Ana History Room is also becoming 

the repository for the memories and stories of 

the immigrants from all over the world who have 

come to the City since its founding. Memoirs and 

oral histories, along with cherished family photos, 

bring these stories to life. The staff has assembled 

a group – the Teen Historians – that explores and 

supplements the City’s knowledge of its past by 

working with the SAHR and other local historical 

organizations. At present, the staff is 

using the funds from two grants to connect 

Santa Ana teens with the City’s past, present 

and future. A grant from Cal Humanities 

is enabling staff to train teens to collect oral 

histories from survivors of violence in a local 

neighborhood. A grant from the California 

State Library will support teens as they interview 

and learn from community pioneers and 

civic leaders while adding oral histories to the 

collection. These oral history interviews with 

body 

has a story to tell. As people pass on 

each year, we lose access to the stories of our 

past. You can help preserve memories and 

experiences by participating in our ongoing 

Oral History Program as an interviewee or 

volunteer. 

Fall provides an excellent time to come in 

and help out with all the projects that are 

going on in the History Room. History is always 

happening around us and the Santa Ana 

Library is continually adding material to the 

collection through the Teen Community Historians 

and others that help us collect the history 

of the city. If you love history or just love 

learning about interesting places around the 

city, come join us during our weekly meeting 

in which we visit historic sites, interview residents, 

and do our part to preserve the history 

of our communities. The Raitt Street Chronicles 

project has thus far interviewed Orange 

 

Lambert, along with Gonzalo Mendez. Both 

lived in the neighborhood and now their recollections 

of life in Santa Ana will be added to the 

historical record. 

The Santa Ana History Room is committed to 

fostering an interest in local history by collecting, 

preserving and making available materials of 

enduring historical value relating to the development 

of the City of Santa Ana. The resources of 

the room are available for local teachers, educators, 

and others in the community interested in 

working with the history room to create public 

presentations and community events. Let us 

know about your organization/event and we will 

tailor a fun and engaging presentation for your 

audience. We are also available for preservation 

classes on how to care for and preserve family 

albums, including ways to digitize and share photographs 

online. 

All are welcome to share their history with us 

and have it preserved for future generations.
