painting, a versatility that makes it an enjoyable
medium for creating botanical artwork. Learn
how to master a variety of techniques, including
impressed line, sgraffito, burnishing, and tonal
construction, as well as how to layer colors
Illustrating with colored pencil combines the
appeal of drawing with the immediacy of color
application. It allows overlays of transparent hues,
which create complex color dimensions that can
express the subtle mingling of colors in nature.
Learn to observe color hues, color temperatures,
and color values of fresh flowers and other
subjects in color studies and compositions. It
is recommended that students take Colored
Pencil II immediately following Colored Pencil I.
Prerequisite: Colored Pencil I–BIL 415.
$415/$385
An important skill in botanical painting is
the ability of the artist to render form with its
various tonal ranges in a realistic manner. This
course will explore tonal techniques in watercolor
that define form, and create depth and three
dimensionality in a botanical painting. The
student, through lecture, demonstration, and
painting exercises, will be taught how to apply
watercolor in smooth gradation of color from dark
to light and how to refine one’s skill in the control
and application of paint. Please bring lunch.
