Interactive Notebook Guidelines
7th Grade Social Studies
What is the purpose of the notebook?
The purpose of the interactive notebook is to enable you to be a creative, organized, and
independent thinker and writer. Interactive notebooks will be used for class notes as well
as for other activities where you will be asked to express your own ideas and process the
information present in and by this class.
How should my notebook be organized?
The Right Side of your notebook is for class notes, discussion note, reading notes and
handouts with new information. As you take notes, structure them so that key information
and ideas are clear. The Right Side of your notebook is teacher provided information.
The Left Side of you notebook will be used for a variety of different activities. The Left
Side of your notebook is for processing or expressing ideas you have learned in class. You
may be asked to create graphic organizers, charts, poems, or drawing pictures. This side
should be where all of your creative and artistic inklings come bursting through.
All class notes and notebook assignments should be included, even for days when you are
absent. An important part of you notebook is its visual appearance. Your notebook should
be NEAT! Each entry should be titled, dated, and recorded in the table of contents. Your
artistic and organizational skills should be visible throughout the notebook. Your book will
have a table of contents like so:
Title of assignment Date Page #
Notes: 1. Make sure you put your name in your notebook!
2. Make sure you number the pages of your notebook- this should be the first
thing you do when you begin!
Including information in your notebook
When we include outside handouts in the notebook, we will be pasting the contents in.
Sometimes we will do this in class, but there are many times I will ask you to do this at
home on your own. If you need to trim the handout down to fit the composition page ,
please make sure you do so.
What happens if I am absent?
If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain notebook assignments from either a
homework partner or the teacher.
