Cagle has confidence in Tribe
jack slayton
Sports Editor
On paper, McMinn
County High School football
Coach Bo Cagle faces
a major rebuilding project
if the Cherokees are
to claim a third straight
District 5-AAA title; keep
a 12-game win streak
against league foes alive
and reach at least the
second round of the Class
AAA state playoff, finishing
with a 10-2 record in
2012.
Just some of the bigger
challenges facing Cagle:
• McMinn lost 17
seniors, 11 of whom
started.
• On defense, the
Cherokees are missing
seven starters, including
six of the front seven.
Those seven, along
with their senior backups,
accounted for 507 of the
Tribe’s 725 total tackles.
• On offense, only four
players are absent, but
chief among them is running
back Kelvin Wells Jr.
Wells rushed for
1,643 yards, accounting
for almost half of the
Cherokees’ 3,365 yards on
the ground, while scoring
21 of 53 touchdowns (20
rushing, one pass receiving)
and seven two-point
conversions.
Also gone is leading
receiver Blake Powers,
who caught 30 passes for
334 yards and one touchdown.
Taking all that into
consideration, McMinn
was picked to finish fifth
in a preseason poll by
both the district coaches
and media behind 5-AAA
newcomer East Hamilton,
Ooltewah, Bradley Central
and Cleveland with Walker
The 2013 McMinn County High School football Cherokees
Valley and Soddy-Daisy in
the 6-7 spots.
Noting that the game
isn’t played on paper,
Cagle hardly sounds like
a man who pays much
attention to statistics or
what other people think.
“We’ve lost good players
before and there are
always valuable players
in any senior class,” said
Cagle, referring specifically
to former Cherokees
Tevin McDermott and
Patrick Lindsey. “You don’t
just replace a player like
Kelvin Wells. Our job as
coaches is to find what
we do best and retool our
offense to take advantage
of it.
“We won’t be able to do
the same thing, but that
doesn’t mean we won’t be
good at what we do – it
will just be different,” he
added.
As for the preseason
ranking, Cagle was equally
unimpressed.
“We were picked fifth
last year – we don’t get
a lot of respect from the
Chattanooga area,” said
Cagle. “If you look at our
history, we always beat
somebody we’re not supposed
to. Sometimes,
that’s all it takes to start
a run or put you where
you want to be in the post
season.”
Cagle does admit the
first five games of this season
will be critical to his
team’s success with home
games against McMinn
Central, Cleveland (district)
and Alcoa, along
with road trips to McCallie
and Oak Ridge.
“We will play to win,
but I don’t think it’s particularly
important,” said
Cagle, noting McMinn
will then have an open
date before closing the
season against district
foes Soddy-Daisy, East
Hamilton, Bradley
Central, Walker Valley and
Ooltewah. “Our goal will
be to get better with each
game and be playing our
best football for the final
five games.”
While the offense has
some issues to resolve, it
is the defense that most
concerns Cagle at this
time.
“Our philosophy has
always been to put our
playmakers on defense
and do what we can on
offense in finding enough
firepower to score points,”
said Cagle. “We’ve got a lot
of young, new faces out
there (on defense) going
through a learning process
you can only get by
playing, but I’m confident
at some point we’ll get it.
Our season will probably
depend on how soon that
happens.”
Defensive starters by
position and players who
will see playing times are
as follows:
• Defensive ends
– Senior Sebastian
Felicidario and junior
Colden Dain with backups
freshman Tyree Tolliver
and junior John Clayton.
Sophomore Ethan
Colloms and junior Gavin
Arnett provide depth.
• Defensive tackles –
Junior Logan Sutton and
junior Israel Brown with
backups freshman Laith
Maxwell and sophomore
Cody McBroom.
Other defensive linemen
include sophomores
Raheem Ellison, Brodie
Wallace, Jordan Clark,
Sergio Hernandez and
Tom Applegate.
• Linebackers –
Sophomore Dominick
Isaza, senior Hunter Davis
and senior Justin Harper
with backups sophomore
Caleb Dain, senior Day
Currie and freshman
Roman Lockmiller.
Other linebackers
include sophomores Josh
Banks, Labrandus Goley
and Seth Martin.
“Hunter (Davis) is our
only returning starter up
front,” said Cagle. “As you
The 2013 McMinn Central High School football Chargers
Central looks to defense early
Andy Brusseau
Staff Writer
ENGLEWOOD – With a
retooled offensive line and a
first-time starter at quarterback,
McMinn Central Head Coach
Josh Goodin will lean on his
defense early this season.
After giving up some big
plays in preseason scrimmages,
Goodin wants more consistency
out of his defensive squad.
“I think our defense is going
to have to lead the team,” he
said. “We’re going to have to rely
on them more times than not.”
As the season progresses,
Goodin hopes to be able to
open up the playbook as his
offensive unit gains experience.
Limiting turnovers will be crucial
to the Chargers’ success.
“We need to be able to control
the ball and keep it out of
our opponents’ hands,” Goodin
said. “To do that, we’re going
to have to get a lot better on
offense, especially on the offensive
line.”
A 5-5 record in 2012 ended
with a 10-point loss to powerhouse
Alcoa in the first round of
the playoffs.
“The last half of the season,
we were playing a lot
better overall,” Goodin said.
“Hopefully, we can carry over
some of that momentum and
use it to our advantage this fall.”
Meigs County is out and
Loudon is in District 5-AA this
year. All five district teams –
McMinn Central, Polk County,
Sweetwater, Sequoyah and
Loudon – reached the playoffs
in 2012. The schedule is tough
and the expectations have risen
for the 2013 Chargers.
“Since I’ve been here, this
may be the most balanced our
district has been,” Goodin said.
“We’re going to get tested every
week in the district.”
The non-district schedule
includes McMinn County, Boyd-
Buchanan and Grace Christian
in three of the first four weeks.
“We’re getting tested out of
the gates,” Goodin said.
Senior tailback Denzel Boyd
returns for an encore after a
stellar junior season. He became
the first Charger to surpass
1,000 yards rushing since 1996
– racking up 1,354 yards – and
found the end zone an eyepopping
25 times.
Boyd will be the centerpiece
of the Chargers’ offense, but his
success depends largely on an
offensive line Goodin considers
a work in progress.
“It seems like he’s (Boyd)
made some improvements over
last year,” Goodin said. “Our
blocking up front has been
inconsistent, so he’s not been
able to get what we hoped he
would get, but he looks good.”
Sophomore Jordan Brooks
has shown enough versatility to
be Boyd’s primary relief in the
backfield while also spending
time outside the hash marks at
receiver.
Freshman powerhouse
Jackson Long will also see some
time at tailback and Austin Hale,
Isaiah Tucker and Matthew
Moses round out the depth
chart.
Senior Gage Johnson will
start at fullback with junior Luke
Davis to spell him.
Other fullback options for the
Chargers are Jace Johnson, Tony
Guardiola, Matt Hale, Robbie
Chancellor, Hunter Stokes, Don
Middleton and Braden Dills.
Sophomore Jackson Guy will
take the reigns behind center
replacing three-year starter Levi
Holley.
“Jackson being young, he’s
still a little bit inconsistent,” said
Goodin. “We’re looking for a
little more poise and accuracy
out of him right now.”
Luke Davis, Zayne Baxter
and Douglas Watts will provide
depth at the position.
Senior wide receiver Josh
Scudder suffered a swim-related
injury in the off-season resulting
in cracked vertebrae in his neck
and a severe cut that required
several stitches. Scudder’s health
has been in doubt throughout
the off-season, but Goodin said
he may be available to play
when the Chargers’ take on
Boyd-Buchanan on Aug. 30.
“He’s a deep threat and an
athletic kid a lot of people have
a hard time guarding,” Goodin
said. “Losing him hurts us, but
we’ve got some (other) good
ones out there, too.”
Junior Ryan Dahle will start
at the other wide out position
and Brooks, senior Will White
and juniors Drew Pierce and
Kaleb Nichols will see significant
time on the field.
The Chargers’ receiving corps
is rounded out by Will McInturff,
David Bull, Austin Runkles,
Bradley Pennell, Logan Carter,
Blake Johnson, Alan Runkles,
Nick Buckner, Cody Hughes,
Jessie Forshee, Joseph Toney,
Brandon Carter, Zack Newman
and Louie Wells.
Sophomore starting tight end
Trenton Kimbler starts the season
on the injured list.
“We’ve not heard the extent
of his injury yet,” said Goodin.
“In the meantime, we’ll probably
do a lot less tight end work.”
Zeb McKinney, Jordan Miller,
Josh Knight, Colby Cook and
Chase Wood may also see playing
time at tight end.
The Chargers lost four of five
starters from last year along the
offensive front. With only junior
Josh Roach returning, blocking
is a key concern for Goodin.
“Right now, we’re not real
good up front to be perfectly
honest,” he said. “We still have
a long way to go and not much
time.”
The group’s lack of experience
and the process of learning
its assignments will be a challenge.
“Potentially, I feel like we can
be pretty good,” Goodin said,
“but right now, we’re just not
getting it down like we need to.”
Central will rely heavily on
its rushing attack. Boyd’s speed
and elusiveness may be able to
compensate while the offensive
line gains experience.
The golf team has high
into a reality.
McMinn lost only two
seniors in defender Ivey
“Ivey and Haley were
Coach Brittany Hart.
“We have nine starters
Experience the key for Tigers
Scott Power
Sports Writer
DECATUR – It’s a new
world for Meigs County
football as the Tigers venture
into a new district.
Meigs leaves the
familiar surroundings
of District 5-AA and will
join the likes of Grace
Christian Academy and
Rockwood in District 3-A.
While the Tigers have an
experienced quarterback
returning, two solid running
backs and the potential
to field a solid defense,
don’t expect the Tigers
to have an easy time just
because they will play in
a lower division. Meigs
will now be in the same
football district as Grace
Christian, Rockwood,
Harriman, Greenback,
Midway and Tellico Plains.
“It is still going to be
tough,” Meigs Coach
Ricky Holliday said. “It’s
not going to be easy.
Rockwood is always good.
Grace is always good.
Greenback is good. I don’t
know that much about
Harriman, but I hear
Midway may be implementing
that Oregon
offense where they try to
play as fast as possible.
And Tellico, you know
(former McMinn Coach)
John (Mullinax) will have
them ready to go.”
Tellico Plains defeated
Meigs last year while
Greenback has defeated
Meigs the last time the
two teams played in 2010.
The Tigers were 1-9 last
year with the only win
coming against winless
Cannon County. Meigs
has eight returning starters
on each side of the
ball.
“Last year, we were
The 2013 Meigs County High School football Tigers
really young,” Holliday
said. “We had young guys
out there not entirely
knowing what they were
doing. When you don’t
know the plays as well or
are just inexperienced,
you don’t play fast and
you don’t play physical –
you hesitate and you can’t
play that way. This year,
they have a year of experience
and we can play a
faster and more physical
game.”
Despite the challenges,
Holliday said he is optimistic
about the upcoming
season, which starts
on Friday, Aug. 30, at
Sweetwater.
“We are excited about
the new season,” Holliday
said. “The kids have
worked hard this summer
and we are ready to get
started.”
One of the big keys for
the Tigers is the offensive
line. At this point, though
it could change depending
on who performs well
in pre-season practice,
the starting lineup looks
like the following: Zack
Farrington at left tackle,
Austin Cooley at left
guard, Brandon Perry
at center, Jacob Kile at
right guard and Austin
Kennedy at right tackle.
Their backups are Cody
Kennedy, Tyler Williams,
Alex McKenzie and Dylan
Hiefner. Senior Tannyr
Beaty may also see playing
time.
“We are having to
replace some guys, but
the ones back this year
can play,” Holliday said.
“We are counting on them
playing well. The offensive
line is the key to having
a good offense. They are
working hard and getting
better.”
One person who hopes
the offensive line plays
well is junior quarterback
Bryson Baker. He completed
66 passes out of 113
attempts for 721 yards, a
60 percent completions
percentage. He threw two
touchdowns and seven
interceptions and was
sacked 23 times as the
offensive line struggled to
protect him at times last
year.
“He is a smart player
with a good arm,”
Holliday said. “He’s makes
good decisions and can
run if he has to.”
One of the strengths
of this year’s team should
be the running game.
Senior Quincy Parris and
Junior Dakota Ricker are
currently competing for
the starting spot, but both
will likely get a lot of carries
this season. Last year,
Ricker ran for 443 yards
and six touchdowns on
69 carries while Parris
rushed 348yards and one
touchdown on 100 carries.
Senior Lee Wilson at fullback
also ran for 191 yards
while junior Taylor Fugate
and sophomore Zack
Thomas provide depth at
fullback.
“We have sort of a
two-headed monster at
tailback,” Holliday said.
“Quincy Parris and Dakota
Ricker are both battling
for the starting job and
both are good running
backs. Parris and Ricker
each gives us something
a little different. Ricker
has good vision and good
speed. Parris is a good
north/south runner. Then
our fullbacks, Lee Wilson
And Fugate do a good
job when they get the
ball. As a group, is a team
strength.”
Rounding out the
Tigers’ offense are the
receivers and tight ends.
The top three receivers are
Derek Letner, Tyler Millard
and Brandon Lawson. The
tight ends are Zack Ridge
and Ryan Rale. None of
the three receivers caught
a pass last year. Ricker was
the leading pass catcher in
2012 with 174 yards on 13
catches.
Still, Holliday likes the
potential of this year’s
receivers and tight ends.
“We have a good group
of tight ends and receivers,”
Holliday said. “They
work hard and go after the
ball. We have three good
dependable receivers and
I think our tight ends can
be good offensive weap-
ons for us.”
Defensively, the Tigers
were a mixed bag. While
they came up with some
big defensive plays, they
didn’t make enough to
turn the momentum for
a struggling offense. As a
team, the Tigers gave up
345 yards a game and had
only seven sacks.
One of the few places
where the Tigers already
believe they have solid
depth is along the defensive
line, where Austin
Kennedy and Beaty are
the starting tackles and
ends Cody Kennedy and
Farrington are the defensive
ends. The are backed
up by Kyle and Hiefner at
the tackles and ends by
Ridge and Rayl.
“A good bunch,”
Holliday said. “We have
good competition right
now. We have a little depth
there, course could always
use more.”
Another group that
Holliday likes is at linebacker.
While he is a
good fullback, Wilson’s
main position is middle
linebacker, where he had
84 tackles last year. He is
currently out with a foot
injury, but it is hoped that
he will be back for the season’s
first game. If not, the
starter will likely be junior
Zack Thomas, Taylor
Fugate, Austin Cooley or
Farrington.
The outside linebackers
are Thomas and Fugate,
unless one replaces
The Daily Post-Athenian, "Fall Sports 2013", Tuesday, August 20, 2013 – Page A9
Wilson, with sophomore
Markus Smock backing
them up.
“Another good group,”
Holliday said. “We have
Lee at middle linebacker
and we have some solid
outside linebackers. We
are looking for some
depth, but overall this is a
pretty good group.”
The secondary returns
two experienced safeties
in Ricker and Parris.
Ricker had three interceptions
last year and Parris,
despite his small stature,
showed he wasn’t afraid
to hit. Millard, Lawson,
Letner and senior David
Hicks are the corners.
“We have some solid
corners and some experience
coming back at safety,”
Holliday said. “Lawson
adds some depth because
he is the back up for one
corner spot and both
safety spots. Parris does
a good job of coming up
and supporting the run.”
The kicking game has
been a problem for the
Tigers in recent years, with
Meigs often forgoing extra
points to go for two-point
conversions because of a
lack of confidence in the
kicking game. Holliday is
hoping that changes this
year.
“We are going to kick
extra points this year,”
Holliday said.
Junior John Bratcher or
sophomore Justus Palco
will be the placekicker this
year and Ricker will again
be the punter.
Holliday likes the
make-up of this year’s
team from the standpoint
that it seems like an
unselfish team. He said
that there isn’t a lot of finger-pointing
when things
go wrong
“This is a close-knit
team,” Holliday said.
“There aren’t any ‘I’ guys
– it’s about the team. They
are competitive (for playing
time), but they want
to do what is best for the
team. I have run them a
lot this summer and I’ve
never heard any complaints.
We don’t have a
lot of locker room lawyers
(complainers). Everybody
has been very positive.”
Of course, everybody
can stand to have a few
more players, especially in
the lower classifications. If
there is one worry about
this team going into the
2013 season, its having
enough players at each
position. This year’s squad
will have about 56 players
on the varsity level and
the Tigers have scheduled
nine junior varsity games.
“Like most coaches,
I worry about depth,”
Holliday said. “We are
always looking for those
three for four swing guys
than can spell a starter
without too much dropoff
(in ability). If the starter
is a 5-star player, you
want the backup to be a
thee-star, not a two-star.
Unless you are at a 5 or
6-A school, every coach in
the state is worried about
depth.”
After the season opener
at Sweetwater, the Tigers
schedule is as follows:
Greenback, Sept. 6; at Sale
Creek (Finley Stadium),
Sept. 13; Rockwood, Sept.
20; McMinn Central,
Sept. 27; Grace Christian,
Oct. 4; at Lookout Valley,
Oct. 11; at Midway, Oct.
18; Harriman, Oct. 25; at
Tellico, Nov. 1.
“You can be not so good
up front and Denzel is the
type of back you want to
have to possibly get those
yards that somebody else
may not be able to get,”
Goodin said.
The starting offensive
line is junior Chris Mull and
sophomore Joe Croft at the
tackles; juniors Josh Roach
and Jack Ingram playing
guard; and sophomore center
Jake Croft.
Reserve linemen include
Tyler Shaw, Jake Crowder,
Collin Garwick, Bradley
Gunter, Michael Munoz,
Kelund Martin, Aaron
Davidson, Bryar Masingale,
Cameron Powers, Brant
Thompson and David Ables.
With concerns about
the offense’s ability to move
the ball consistently, the
Chargers will count on their
defense to make plays.
Strong starters and quality
depth make Central’s front
its most reliable unit.
“Our front seven might
be the strongest piece of our
team,” Goodin said. “A lot of
that is because of the defensive
line.”
In early scrimmages, the
defense gave up some big
plays, but Goodin said they
weren’t “manhandled,” but
rather missed assignments
that can be corrected.
Three of four starters
return on the line and two of
three starters are back in the
linebacking corps.
The starting tackles are
seniors Colby Cook and
Michael Munoz and the
starting ends are senior Zeb
McKinney and junior Josh
Knight.
Reserve defensive linemen
include Tyler Shaw,
Jordan Miller, Chase
Wood, Jake Crowder, Collin
Garwick, Jake Croft, Chris
Mull, Josh Roach, Bradley
Gunter, Joe Croft, Jack
Ingram, Kelund Martin,
Bryar Masingale, Cameron
Powers, Brant Thompson,
David Ables, Trenton
Kimbler and Brandon
Carter.
Senior linebacker Gage
Johnson is the classic
“coach on the field” for the
Chargers. His leadership will
be pivotal to success in 2013
for Central.
“Having a linebacker
back like Gage Johnson to
run the defense is a great
thing to have,” Goodin said,
“and he’s a great kid on top
of that. He definitely commands
the players’ respect.”
The starting linebackers
are Luke Davis, sophomore
Tony Guardiola and
Johnson.
Depth will be provided
by Jace Johnson, Matt Hale,
Isaiah Tucker, Robbie
Chancellor, Nick Buckner,
Matthew Moses, Hunter
Stokes, Don Middleton,
Aaron Davidson and Braden
Dills.
The last line of defense
– the Chargers’ secondary –
lost the leadership and playmaking
ability of Darecio
Borden to graduation, but a
mixture of experience and
young talent has Goodin
cautiously optimistic.
“We’ve got a few kids who
are inexperienced and trying
to get where they need
to be technique-wise and
assignment-wise before we’ll
be real good in the defensive
backfield,” he said.
Seniors Denzel Boyd,
Josh Scudder, Will White, Will
McInturff and Alan Runkles,
and junior Ryan Dahle comprise
the core rotation in the
secondary.
Also available will be
Jordan Brooks, Jackson
Long, David Bull, Douglas
Watts, Jackson Guy, Austin
Runkles, Bradley Pennell,
Kaleb Nichols, Zayne Baxter,
Logan Carter, Blake Johnson,
Austin Hale, Cody Hughes,
Jessie Forshee, Joseph Toney,
Zack Newman, Louie Wells
and Drew Pierce.
“I am very proud of my
in order to prepare
for this upcoming season
and their off-season work
seems to be paying off,”
said Hart. “We had tremendous
our team camp and I feel
like if we can take what we
learned and incorporate
it into our play during
games, we will have an
unstoppable season.”
The Lady Cherokees
will face a stiff test early,
opening season play at
traditional state power
Baylor on Tuesday, Aug.
Volleyball
McMinn was 12-6 last
season, winning all its
non-district matches, but
were 0-6 in District 5-AAA
play.
“We were more competitive
in our district
matches than in years past
and that was encouraging
considering the strength
of our district,” said Head
Coach Tim McPhail.
“Hopefully, we can continue
to get better and
earn some district wins
this year.”
McPhail’s optimism is
buoyed by the fact that
everybody returns from
the 2012 squad.
“It’s a very experienced
group,” said McPhail.
“They have been working
hard for the past few
weeks and I hope we
make that kind of effort
pay dividends.”
Golf
The McMinn boys lost
four seniors off last year’s
District 5-AAA championship
team and two of four
players on the girls’ team,
but that has not dimmed
Coach Jerry Quirk’s hopes
for 2013.
“I believe both teams
can challenge for the district
title,” Quirk said.
Of the eight-man
Cherokees roster, Quirk
said: “The last four years,
I knew what I had. This
year’s a little different, but
I know the talent is there,
it just had to rise to the
surface and we have to be
consistent every match
in finding four good scorers.”
Of the Lady Cherokees,
Quirk said: “It’s pretty
much the same thing – be
consistent. The difference
is they don’t have any
backup – no one to fall
back on because it’s just
the two of them.”
we have the ability to surprise some
teams.”
Last year’s number one, rising junior
aul Houk, has moved to Arizona after
inning the District 5-AA individual
itle last year and went on to finish in
he Top 20 of the TSSAA Class AA State
ournament.
Central also lost Cameron Austin
No.2) and Braden Stewart (No. 3) to
raduation.
Armstong admits the Chargers will
ave a hard time repeating as the district
unner up with a 12-2 record.
Sophomore Dylan Miller and junior
ndrew Duggan, last year’s No. 4 and 5,
ill probably move up to the 1-2 spots
ith sophomores Logan King and Will
ope, junior Dillon Torbett and senior
than Wood vying for the 3-5 positions.
“The future is bright because we have
nly one senior, but that means we’re
acking in terms of experience at this
oint,” said Armstrong. “Hopefully, we
can build on what we learn in the regular
season and be more competitive come
tournament time.”
Ryley Watson returns for the girls and
she will play along side freshman Mattie
Cardin.
“I think the girls will be improved if
Ryley can overcome a back injury and
get 100 percent healthy again,” said
Armstrong. “Mattie is the best freshman
we’ve had at Central in some time. She
will start the year as our No. 1.”
Cross Country
Masingale, who also serves as an
assistant football coach and the head
track coach, takes over the cross country
program.
“I really don’t know what to expect
from this season,” said Masingale. “What
I do know is I have a good group of kids
that work and train hard. I’m looking forward
to see how well we can progress.”
