Check out those fireworks! 

Fourth of July…Independence Day, July 

4th has been a federal holiday in the United 

States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence 

Day celebrations goes back to the 

18th century and the American Revolution 

(1775-83). In June 1776, representatives of 

the 13 colonies then fighting in the revolutionary 

struggle weighed a resolution that would 

declare their independence from Great Britain. 

On July 2nd, the Continental Congress voted 

in favor of independence, and two days later 

its delegates adopted the Declaration of Independence, 

a historic document drafted by 

Thomas Jefferson. From 1776 until the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the 

birth of American independence, with typical festivities ranging from fireworks, parades 

and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues. Why not a Modern Western 

Square Dance? 

I know there are some planned, but why not Square Dance parties we can invite the nonsquare 

dancing public to? A great chance to let people know about our heritage! They are 

in the mood celebrating our great country’s heritage. Bring them into the fold; show them 

what they are missing! Just an idea……

We’re still remembering our wonderful State 

Convention in Lakeland. We personally enjoyed 

the “Intro to DBD”, and we always love the 

Plus Hall with the “2 x 2’s” – we heard two 

couples raving about the great fun they had in 

“Welcome to our World”. Great idea – we need 

to invite more beginners! The decorations were 

fantastic. The vendors were excellent. Thank 

you again to Carole and Garland McKenzie and 

their committees. 

Welcome to Cheryl and Paul Miller, Chairs 

for the “Life’s a Beach in 2013”. Their convention 

should be a lot of fun! We loved the kick-off, and appreciate that all five associations 

were represented and announced. Many of us tend to forget that this is a statewide sponsored 

convention, and we need volunteers from every area! Now is the time – Volunteer! We 

know that Penny and Jenny Green are still looking for some committee members for 2014. 

The Federation meeting was held Sunday at 9:00am. Thank you Delegates for being 

present. The Delegates voted to approve some minor changes to the “Convention Procedures”, 

which will bring our wording in alignment with the Florida Callers Association 

procedures and the Round Dance Council procedures. This vote will only become official 

after approval by the two associations above. 

Also approved was a donation to the “Handicapable Dancers” to assist them in attending 

their National Convention. Reports from each area association, the newsletter and magazine 

editors, the conventions, the Hall of Fame and USDA reports were heard. Committees were 

assigned to resolve questions and to prepare reports for the October meeting. Thank you 

everyone for your hard work. Your Federation Board and Delegates are doing great jobs!

Next Federation meeting is in Sebring at the Kenilworth Lodge, at the ‘Party-Rama

Beaus & Belles

Mike Sikorsky has a winter square dance program in Mesa, Arizona, and tours nationally 

& internationally. Mike is owner/producer of Mesa Apache Productions (MAP) square 

dance music, and is the author of two books teaching the Activator Stream system of Patter 

Calling, a system he invented. Mike won the Most Entertaining Caller award at the first 

Ozzie Awards in April 2011, with over 37,000 votes cast worldwide. Mike is attempting to 

tour central Florida during the last week of September each year. Any clubs wishing to book

After a discussion with the Bow & Swing editor Bill Boyd, this author was requested 

to write the following article. Before we begin, let’s take a look at the primary premise: 

Beaus & Belles should be Basic. 4th or 5th night of Beginners Class Basic. 

Consider for a moment what the benefits would be if Beaus & Belles was taught as a 

position description, much like Beginners are taught to recognize Lines. When a Partner 

Trade is taught, dancers are oft times told to pass right shoulders as they pass their partner 

during the call. In this author’s experience, this Partner Trade shoulder pass happens so 

quickly, the new dancer brain most often does not recognize it as a shoulder pass at all, 

since it does not remotely resemble a Pass Thru, which is the only Pass call they’ve been 

doing thus far in their learning. 

Does it not seem possible how Partner Trade could be more easily learned by telling the 

Beau to always walk around the outside of the Belle as they pass? 

Could they also be told the Beau is usually the Boy and the Belle is usually the girl, but 

not always? Does this not seem to provide the possibility of mild Patter variety at a later 

date? 

Now let’s examine why this author believes Beaus & Belles have been relegated to Advanced, 

and then only from limited positions. Callers have Forever & Forever Amen been 

teaching Beaus as being the left-hand dancer of each partnership, and the Belle as being 

the right-hand dancer of each partnership. This description seems to require the dancer to 

have an out-of-body experience so they can view the square from a helicopter-like perch, 

much like the caller’s vantage point. To this caller’s way of thinking, the above is typical 

caller-think and it makes Beaus & Belles very difficult to learn. 

Try asking the dancers to identify who their current partner is. Then ask them to identify 

their own right hand. Is your right hand towards your partner? From a normal line facing 

out, the caller could say “That’s YOU, boys. You are the Beaus”. From the same line, in the 

next sentence, the caller could ask the dancers to identify their own left hand. Is your left 

hand towards your partner? “That’s YOU, girls. You are the Belles”. Then, when teaching 

Partner Trade, it would be easy to have the dancers turn towards their partner as they turn, 

having the Beau always walk outside and around the Belle. 

A few weeks later, it seems it would be fairly simple to call Heads Star Thru, then Outsides 

Squeeze In between them, a really cool way to call “Spread” without saying “Spread”. 

Then, after Pass Thru is called, a same-sex partnership can be described. Now who are the 

Belles? Is your left hand towards your same-sex partner? Raise your hand. Now the caller 

can teach Belles Trade, just for workshop variety, telling the dancers to pass right shoulders 

and both face back in, as they change places. The ending Formation is normal right hand 

Ocean Waves with the boys on the end (the Zero Arrangement), so normal choreo calling 

would immediately follow. 

Several weeks later, after the caller has taught Dixie Style to a Wave, the above “Heads 

Star Thru & Outsides Squeeze In, then Pass Thru” could be called. Then, have the Beaus 

Trade this time, putting the dancers in a left hand Ocean Wave with the boys in the center, 

like the caller just created when he/she taught Dixie Style to a Wave.

Movement on a social dance floor is very complex and different. 

The social dancer knows the secrets of this dynamic and 

moves around the floor impeccably. Sometimes the woman turns 

around him while he apparently does not move, other times the 

couple moves through incredibly tight spaces and goes right to 

the line of dance without missing a single beat or bumping into 

anybody. 

The musical arrangements for stage dancing are prepared especially 

for how the dancers want to do their choreographies. The social dance does just the 

opposite: he adapts his choreography to the music as it is already written. The stage dance 

dances to be seen, the social dancer for pleasure. While the social dancer is a “compadre” 

and likes to be admired by onlookers, the proportion between pleasure and being watched 

marks the difference between the social dancer and the stage performer. 

The salon dancer dances on the dance floor all his life. For him, the tango is a therapy 

and a big party. 

The difference between experienced social dancers and the current students of tango is 

that the former mixed their cocktail of steps and music simultaneously and the latter give 

priority to choreography and pay little attention to the music. Good dancers are made, not 

born, each “natural” movement has taken hours of training and practice. 

Those who won’t change their idea that the quantity of steps constitutes the quality of 

the dance will always be beginners with new steps, and they will never understand why the 

social dancer wants to die on the dance floor. 

Many young people are investigating the tango, and that is good because what is alive 

is in motion. But one thing is the investigation of tango, the other is the tango itself. On the 

social dance floor, people get out of their way because they take oversized steps and lift their 

knees. Sometimes these hurricanes wait until after 3:00 in the morning to dance, given that it 

is impossible to share the floor with them, and when the dance floor empties somewhat, the 

laboratory is theirs. Today, and for the safety of feet and ankles, dance salons are divided in 

Buenos Aires. There are younger places where the “baby tango” predominates, and there are 

places where older people dance that don’t exclude younger dancers, and some foreigners 

who understand social dancing. 

Other foreigners visit Buenos Aires and only go to the places where the young people 

dance, so they end up believing that the tango in Buenos Aires is the same one they dance 

in their native lands – and they are right because they did not see tango in Buenos Aires. 

The Europeans who have danced for more than five years don’t go to the dances full 

of new enthusiasts because they have become bored with dancing so many years without 

discovering the main dish of tango. They stayed in the appetizers. And the saddest thing is 

that they don’t know that they don’t know. They think that they have reached the final stage 

with tango, so they become tired of it. Many stop dancing. 

It would be good if the European experience could serve American dancers. The newest 

dancers have fewer cards played in the exhibition tango, are less committed to this type of 

tango because they have invested less time in studying it and may have the courage to do 

what makes women happy in the dance. These dancers will discover sooner or later why 

the social dancers of Buenos Aires want to die dancing. Sooner or later, they will enter the 

delirium of Orpheus, and they will be happy with that.

Square & Round 

Dance Assoc. 

The Florida State Convention was a 

huge success. Florida has some really great 

callers and cuers. How nice it is to go from 

hall to hall usually selling half and half 

tickets and hearing such fabulous sounds. 

The dancers had a very nice time. The round 

dancers shared their floor with an ice rink, 

but fortunately we did not hear of anyone 

falling. The Convention Chairman had 

said we won’t have any decorations. Then 

they went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans. 

The decorations they brought back were 

outstanding and several clubs donated their 

decorations. The Convention Center was 

festive and the dancers got into the spirit. 

We had our own New Orleans in Lakeland. 

To end these festivities on a high note was 

the Kick-Off for the 2013 Convention. We 

are in for a fun time if it is anything like 

the show they put on. The lifeguards were 

chasing girls in bikinis, kids were playing 

in the sand and everyone played ball with 

the attendees. What a show. If you were not 

there you really missed it. We hope you plan 

on attending next year. 

Are you aware there is a handicapable 

club in our association? This club dances in 

Daytona Beach on Sunday afternoons. Rick 

Yates is their caller. He does a wonderful 

job. The Yellow Rockers plan to attend the 

National Handicapable Convention in North 

Charleston, South Carolina, in July. We had 

the honor to present them a check from the 

Florida Federation of Square Dancers. At 

the June Fifth Saturday Dance the Yellow 

Rockers will attend and strut their stuff. A 

check from CFA will be presented to them 

at the dance. 

Should you find yourself in Daytona 

Beach on June 30, join us at the City Island 

Recreation Center, 108 East Orange 

Avenue, for our Fifth Saturday Dance. 

Early rounds start at 7:00pm and squares

The National Singles 2012 Dance-A- 

Rama is looming on the dancing horizon. 

This is the 42nd National Singles Labor 

Day Weekend Dance and, as you probably 

already guessed, it is held over the Labor 

Day Weekend, August 30 through September 

2. This year it is being held in Des 

Moines, Iowa, at the Airport Holiday Inn 

and Conference Center, right in the heart 

of America. And as with all BIG Singles 

dances, you stay and eat and dance all at 

one location. Just drive to the hotel, park 

your jitney in their garage, dance for four 

days AND nights, pick up your jitney and 

drive home. All this for just $40.00 per person. 

And this too is open to married people 

as well as couples, singles and solos. This 

year they are offering a Mobile Lunch Cart 

or you can eat at the Hotel restaurant so you 

see you don’t need to leave the premises. 

No leaving, that is, unless you want to 

take one of the many tour adventures being 

offered like The Bridges of Madison 

County/John Wayne Birthplace Tour or a 

Jon Anderson Riverboat Ride or a Sleepy 

Hollow Renaissance Fair and just so many, 

many other wonderful sojourns throughout 

the city and countryside. 

And great callers, too, like Tom Miller 

from Pennsylvania and Gary Kincade from 

Ohio, plus many more callers from all 

over. Then there are cuers like the Garzas,

Our Billy Bowlegs Dance on June 2nd in 

Ft Walton Beach was a huge success! PAS- 

ARDA Hall was packed. As usual, callers 

Darryll McMillan and Chris Burchfield and 

cuer Sandi Sturgis were just awesome! Next 

years Billy Bowlegs Dance will be on June 

1, 2013. Flyers are already available so put 

it on your calendar. 

The Fiesta Dance in Pensacola on June 9 

with Ted Kennedy calling and Terri Willaby 

cueing was a blast. This is a very fun dance 

every year! Check it out next year. 

There are two really KOOL DANCES 

coming up in the Panhandle this month. On 

July 14 Chris Buchfield will be conducting 

a Plus Workshop and DBD Dance at Grand 

Square Hall in Panama City. The July Jamboree 

is going to be held on July 20-21, 

2102 at Ragon Hall in Pensacola with Bill 

Chestnut calling and John Williford cueing. 

As usual, one or more of the Northwest 

Clubs dance almost every night of the week 

and there are fun dances almost every Friday 

night at Ragon Hall in Pensacola and 

other sites in our area. No matter where you 

are this month, get out and dance!!!

It’s almost July, and soon we will be 

celebrating our country’s birthday! Hope 

everyone enjoys the 4th of July dances 

and festivities of the day wearing your red, 

white and blue! 

What a wonderful Florida State Convention 

in June – and what a fun kickoff skit for 

“Life’s a Beach in 2013” – our SEA crew 

looked great out there sporting their beach 

balls, surf boards, tropical shirts and bikini 

T-shirts! Our congrats to Cal Maki from 

Castoff’s whose ribbon number was picked 

for a door prize! 

The SEA had a wonderful attendance 

at our “Come Hawaiian” dance. Our president, 

Zail Greenbain, gave us a hula lesson 

between square and round dance tips, and 

we had a roomful of dancers in muu-muus, 

grass skirts, and Hawaiian shirts – everyone 

was given a complimentary lei. The Hollywood 

Community Center was turned into a 

tropical island with Hawaiian decorations, 

and fabulous FOOD! A big thank you to all 

who donated to the refreshment table – all 

kinds of baked goods, sweets and fruit flavors 

of pineapple, coconut, bananas, etc that 

carried out our theme and tasted yummy!

Agape Squares 

We continue to dance every Monday 

night. Summer is a busy time for vacations 

and activities, but we want all who can, to 

continue to dance this summer. We will 

continue to work with our new dancers on 

mainstream and plus calls. We will probably 

start a new class again in the fall. 

Since the Round Up will be in Niceville 

this year we would like to have the Agape 

Squares well represented at the dance. Of 

course, we would like to have every club 

well represented, as this is our NWFSRDA 

annual dance weekend. You can already 

make plans to attend on October 26 and 27 

at Ruckel Middle School. 

We enjoy having Greg Huebner and Roy 

Bernier, both up and coming callers, calling 

a tip for us on Monday nights too! 

As always we want to invite others to 

join us on Mondays.

Satellite Beach...No club news this

Barefoot Bay 

Twirlers 

Barefoot Bay...The Barefoot Bay Twirlers 

have ended dances for the summer and 

will resume dancing Monday, November 5, 

this year. The Twirlers dance plus level normally 

in Building A, Barefoot Bay, but our 

first dance on November 5 will be in building 

D & E due to election equipment being 

set up in Building A on Monday night. Our 

caller is Steve Ekin and we no longer have 

rounds due to the limited number of round 

dancers that attend. We thank everyone 

who supported us this past season and are 

looking forward to seeing everyone again 

in the fall.

Geneva... Warm would be the best way 

to describe June here at Brendon Squares. 

Our hearts were warmed by all of the friends 

and visitors that attended our dances. On 

June 3 we were especially warmed by the 

return of our club members Dave and Tracy 

Calloway. What a delight to see them walk 

through the door.

We warmed our tummy’s at the after 

dance dinner held on June 10. Our hotdog 

master, Ken Johnson did a fantastic job 

grilling the dogs. Yum! There is no hotdog 

like one grilled by Ken. Each month our 

club holds a special after dinner dance. This 

is such a great way to spend quality time 

with our friends and visitors. Please check 

our website for specific dates and times so 

you can come and have dinner with us. 

On July 7 we will celebrate our third 

anniversary. We promise that our Anniversary 

Beach Getaway will be filled with lots 

of fun and fantastic food. Our caller for 

this special event will be Gary Shoemake.

the square dance scene. As well, we 

need to spend at least part of the summers 

in Idaho while our health permits. 

I have much enjoyed providing the Buttons 

& Bows news bits, and in fact rather 

proud of most of them. All good wishes to 

you and your contributions to the Cause.

The Hoedowners also brought their Caller 

Gene McCullough and Rod Barngrover 

who in turn called a tip. Everyone had a 

great time. The following week we honored 

all mothers with ice cream sundaes. The 

upcoming plans for June are a pie night to 

celebrate Father’s Day on June 14, and an 

International Pot Luck Supper, on June 21. 

Our Caller John has started a plus workshop 

from 7:00pm to 7:30pm – everyone is invited 

to come and join in the fun. 

Our winter members have all returned 

North, many of our regular members are 

away, either vacationing all over the world 

or on cruises. We hope they are all having 

a wonderful time and to hurry back. We 

miss them.

Our caller, R. J. Hogan, will need to 

undergo major surgery the last week in June 

and then a real possibility of another operation 

six weeks later. The club wishes him 

well and looks forward to his full recovery. 

June 29 we will be closed, as R. J. ‘s operation 

is that week. Our club will not hold 

dances in July and August, but will resume 

September 7.

Club News 

For you and me. 

We take our freedom so lightly. On 

this Fourth of July let us remember with 

gratitude all who have given of themselves 

that we might have this privilege. Square 

dancing is an activity where we can put 

into practice what we mean by gratitude to 

pursue our lives in friendship. No matter 

what mistakes we can laugh and go on. A 

yellow rock takes away cares we have and 

guides us as we enter with others into the 

sharing of cares. 

The Granada Squares is having a great 

summer. Dick Nordine is enjoying teaching 

and bringing round dancers into being a 

more confident dancer. 

John Saunddrs keeps us going, sometimes 

at a mad pace as he tests our listening 

skills to meet the challenges he puts forth. 

Linda, his wife, guides line dancing which 

is enthusiastically enjoyed. 

Come join us in these summer months 

on Tuesday nights at the Ormond Beach 

Senior Center. If your club is not dancing 

for the summer come dance with us. We 

extend our hospitality to you. Dick Nordine 

teaches round dancing from 6:15-7:15pm.

Grand Squares 

Gainesville...On May 8 the Celebrity 

Squares from Anthony came to our dance 

and stole our banner. It was fun to dance 

with them, and we’ll need to go retrieve our 

banner soon. 

We had quite a few representing our club 

at the Convention in Lakeland. Even some 

of our class members went for the day on 

Saturday! 

On Tuesday, June 12, the Grand Squares 

graduated our new dancers and celebrated 

our 38th anniversary as a club. Lon Ligon 

started the club, and he has been our caller 

for the entire 38 years. We started the evening 

with a covered dish dinner; graduation 

and dancing followed until 9:00pm. 

We meet at the Carpenters’ Union Hall 

in Gainesville. We invite you to our Red, 

White, and Blue dance on July 3, 2012 at 7 

PM. We will be dark for the month of August, 

and our normal schedule will resume 

on September 4.

Heel & Toe 

St. Cloud... Life is full of surprises, and 

some of them are good – like learning that 

Heel & Toe will be starting Beginner Square 

Dance Lessons on Monday, August 6, at 

the Annex Building, 702 Indiana Avenue in 

Saint Cloud. With Bill Boyd as the caller, 

new dancers and angels are all assured of 

having fun. Bill always provides square 

dance extras for the experienced dancers 

who help the new dancers. 

We had expected to have a long summer 

break and not dance again until October, 

but Bill declared that we will be having a 

dance at the Senior Center on 17th Street in 

Saint Cloud on September 9. Bill’s dances 

are always called to the level of the dancers 

present, so dancers who want a little practice 

on a call they’re having trouble with are 

able to ask Bill to call that figure during the 

hash – and if it doesn’t turn out just right, 

then we all benefit from a mini refresher. 

(Bill is game to help dancers work on any 

aspect of their dancing, so we have worked 

on DBD and Advanced calls as well as the 

usual Mainstream and Plus – and had a ball 

no matter what we’re doing!) 

We invite all Western square dancers to 

join us in August, when the action resumes.

“Pairs & Spares” 

Casselberry...Caller Gene McCullough 

announced a change of time during the summer 

months of June, July and August. The 

new schedule remains the same with a Plus 

Workshop during the first hour, but the club 

dance ends a half hour early. If you would 

like to brush up on the Plus figures, we hope 

you will join us. We dance every Sunday 

afternoon. Line dancing is included between 

tips during the workshop hour. Dick 

Nordine cues rounds during the club dance.

dance demonstration at Metro Church, in 

Casselberry, for a group of home-schooled 

children, ages 8 to 13, with Rod Barngrover 

calling. 

We raided Dixie Squares in Daytona 

Beach and had a great time dancing to the 

calls and cues of John Swindle and Dick 

Nordine. Gene McCullough and Rod Barngrover 

also called a tip. 

Our Mother’s Day Dance honored all the 

ladies with flowers, plants and chocolates! 

The Garden Patch Squares, of Ocoee, raided 

us, along with their caller, Bill Boyd. They 

donated two lovely flowering plants and 

free dance passes. 

A patriotic Memorial Day Dance honored 

those that made the ultimate sacrifice 

and the veterans and their families that 

served in the armed forces. 

The Hoedowners are looking forward 

to the following special dances in June: 

Club Colors Dance (the first dance of each 

month); Flag Day Dance, on June 10, with 

guest caller Rod Barngrover; and a Father’s 

Day Ice Cream Social Dance on June 17. 

On July 1, the Hoedowners will host 

a Red, White & Blue Dance and Indoor 

Picnic. On July 4th, John Saunders, John 

Barrett, Gene McCullough and Rod Barngrover 

will be hosting The Firecracker Four 

dance in Deland, with a picnic following

Hollywood...Did you see the Super 

Moon in May? Not only did we see it on that 

Saturday night, but our caller Jack Lewis 

dedicated our dance to the “Super Moon” 

with singing calls – “Blue Moon”, “Bad 

Moon Rising” – and more – of course, he 

had some help from dancers who contributed 

some howling wolf calls! Needless to say 

we have a lot of fun at Hollywood Squares 

and are looking forward to dancing through 

the rest of the “lazy, hazy, days of summer” 

– come join us on Saturday evenings, A2 

and rounds at the Hollywood Community/ 

Shuffleboard Center.

Our Red/White/Blue Dance was changed 

to June 11, from June 18. But, the reason for 

the dance was still the same. To honor our 

flag and country. 

We had our first banner raid as a new 

club to Celebrity Squares on May 17 to 

retrieve our banner. Then, on May 21, we 

hosted a raid on our new turf. Our friends 

and many co-members from nearby Circle 

Squares dropped by to take our banner. 

They brought along their cuer, Loretta 

Hanhurst, to substitute for our cuer, Bev 

Landwehr, which was very much appreciated. 

And she brought along her husband and 

caller from Circle Squares, Don Hanhurst. 

On July 23, we will enjoy our annual 

Ice Cream Social. Put together mostly by 

Charlie Elder, with flavors such as vanilla 

and peach. It was a refreshing change of 

food and snack. Who wouldn’t want ice 

cream to cool down with, after a couple of 

tips. Thanks Charlie! 

The Florida Convention is now history, 

but a few points are worth mentioning. On 

Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm, there was 

a dance competition among squares. Each 

had their own individual judge. One mistake 

and they were gone! Three squares would 

outlast the rest and become winners. I am 

happy to say, that in the second place square 

winner’s were our own Mike and Judy 

Mazzeo. In the third place square winner’s, 

were our own Norm and Glenda Barnes. 

Congratulations to both couples. 

Also, don’t forget, to wish America Happy 

Birthday on July 4, where ever you are.

The Villages...“Meet and Greet Your 

Fellow Square Dancers” is a new column 

which has been very successfully added 

to our bimonthly newsletter, “The Orange 

Blossom Squares News”. This idea came 

from our late President, Bob Courter. Bob 

wanted to get to know the club members a 

little better. “Most of the time,” Bob said, 

“you meet folks in a square, but there isn’t 

any time to really get to talk to them or find 

out what interests you may have in common.” 

Bob shared his brain storm with Rita 

and Dale Heins, club newsletter editors, and 

the new column was on it’s way to being 

developed. Bob already had thought of a 

lot of questions to ask people. So Rita and 

Dale developed the questionnaire to send

when Dale and Rita decided to add a picture 

of each couple/individual along with their 

story. What a nice touch. The number of 

members featured in each publication varies 

according to the space available, but the goal 

is to eventually feature each club member. 

With all of the positive comments, this new 

column is definitely here to stay. In honor of 

its founder, Jennie and Bob Courter (Club 

Presidents) were the first featured couple. 

Even though our Snowbirds have left 

for the summer, OBS continues to dance 

throughout the summer months. If you are 

in the area, please drop in and join us in a 

square. Our red, white and blue Patriotic 

Dance will be held on July 1. We will be 

dancing to caller, Elmer Sheffield. If you like 

ice cream, why not join us for our Ice Cream 

Social Dance on July 8 and dance to caller 

Bill Chestnut. Whit Brown will be calling 

on July 15, Bob Poyner on July 22, and Ted 

Kennedy finishes the month on July 29. Our

Hoedowners doing a hoedown or a square? 

Space Trackers 

Merritt Island...Cruisin’...that’s what 

we were doing for our Fathers Day Dance 

on June 14th. We were cruising all over the 

dance hall in our brightest Hawaiian shirts 

and knee knocker shorts, and tennis shoes 

with no socks. Some of us had colorful 

leis around our necks. Our Cruise Director, 

Peggy Karpinski, had the hall all decorated 

with life saver rings, life jackets, and nautical 

flags hung everywhere. We even had 

several cruise brochures laying around for 

dreaming. Our Guests of Honor, the Fathers, 

were each given a miniature Passport to 

wear. The passports were numbered so 3 

lucky Fathers received a surprise gift. 

The ladies opened up an Ice Cream Bar, 

much like the ones on a cruise ship, where 

our honored guests were served ice cream 

with a great selection of many, many delicious 

toppings, furnished by the Ladies, 

including bananas, marchino cherries even 

marshmallows. We sure had our fill, some 

even braved seconds. 

During the course of the evening we had 

a dangle dance where we passed around the 

life saving rings, much like the teddy bear 

dances. Such fun for our new students, too 

who stayed after class and danced the whole 

evening with us.

area from Waco, Texas, and is an avid plus 

square dancer. She did attend the State 

Convention and commented it was one of 

the best she has attended. She was very impressed 

with the theme, Mardi Gras, and all 

the great decorations and loved our vendors.

have lots of club banners just waiting to 

be stolen. Contact the summer banner

Promenaders 

Leesburg...It is with regret and a definite 

sense of loss that Sunshine Promenaders 

has made the decision to disband. Our final 

dance was on April 20, 2012, and we had a 

nice crowd including some long-ago (and 

not so long ago) members that made a special 

effort to be there. We certainly enjoyed 

seeing and dancing with them again. Our 

major problem was the lack of new dancers 

to fill the void left by those moving 

away or unable to dance anymore. We’ve 

never known anyone that just wanted to stop 

square dancing and we’ve been having fun 

at this for a very long time! 

That being said, the club members want 

to thank what we’ve called the “A-Team” 

for a long time: our caller Ron Libby, and 

our cuer Joanne Helton and husband Ken. 

We’ve enjoyed their enthusiasm and support 

for quite a few years and hope to be 

able to dance with them in the future on 

another floor. 

It also needs saying that the members 

of this club were exceptional to work 

with, dedicated and willing to do whatever 

needed to be done. We were privileged to 

be presidents for a couple of terms and we 

will miss dancing and working closely with 

them. We hope to see them often as we continue 

to enjoy dancing.

Tampa...Our monthly birthday/anniversary 

dance was held on May 21, and 

everyone had a great time celebrating the 

birthdays of Dunnelle Burchsted, Joyce 

Dubois, and the REAL birthday of Charlie 

Lovelace. It was also the anniversary of two 

of our steadfast members – Lloyd and Gayle 

Floyd. We had more than four squares 

for the occasion, including our welcomed 

guests from several other clubs. 

There was no regular dance on May 28 

due to Memorial Day. And I’m sure everyone 

had a nice time celebrating it, each in 

his own way that day.

We’ll have a regular dance on June 4 and 

enjoy dancing to the delightful calling of 

our own Ron Reardon and cueing of Charlie 

Lovelace. Then the following Monday, a 

night everyone is waiting for, will be our Ice 

Cream Social. It’s always a favorite for our 

members and guests because there’s plenty 

of ice cream for everyone to enjoy. And it 

really hits the spot after the lively dancing 

we all enjoy, even in the middle of the summer. 

These are the casual days of summer, 

but it doesn’t dampen our enthusiasm for 

our square and round dancing. 

There will be another regular dance on 

June 18, and the following Monday will be 

our June birthday/anniversary dance. We’re 

anxious to help celebrate with the members 

who are having their birthdays and anniversaries 

this month. For this occasion our 

caller will be Robert Arias and our cuer is 

Charlie Lovelace. 

On June 15 the Temple Twirlers are putting 

together a demo at the James A. Haley 

Veteran’s Administration in Tampa. This 

will be for the wheelchair and/or ambulatory 

veterans and their Country Western 

Day. It should be a lot of fun, and we are 

hoping to start some interest in a class for 

wheelchair dancing in this area. 

We hope that everyone was able to enjoy 

dancing at the Florida State Convention. It’s 

always a lot of fun, and especially this year, 

with the theme of Mardi Gras Fun in the 

Sun. Just made you want to get in there and 

join the happy dancers. 

On July 9 we are having a regular dance, 

but it will be very special because Allen 

Snell will be calling for us, and that always 

insures a good time for everyone. Our cuer 

will be the ever popular Charlie Lovelace. 

Just want to remind everyone of our 

Shipwreck Dance on July 16 (you may 

certainly come casual for this one). The 

dancing attire will all be casual for the 

summer, starting June 4 (no shorts or tank 

tops). Also, we will be having another very 

special dance on July 23 with the calling 

of Art Springer and Sam Dunn. Step lively 

for this one.

club’s 50th anniversary. Activities started 

with a catered dinner followed by a program 

MC’d by Jack Frye. Jack used a slideshow 

and narration to tell the story of the club’s 

long heritage of square and round dancing 

in central Florida. We honored past club 

presidents as well as past and present callers 

and cuers. There was a ton of pictures, 

displays, and other memorabilia for reminiscing 

and fellowshipping with old friends. 

Saturday night, June 2, Jet Roberts called a 

really fun dance for all our community of 

dancers and friends from all over the State. 

Jimmy and Carol Griffin cued rounds. These 

two nights were the result of more than six 

months of planning led by Special Events 

directors Linda and Danny Courtney plus a 

committee of super club members. Special 

thanks go to outgoing Presidents Bob and 

Ginny Osborne for their hands-on attention 

to detail and just plain hard work to ensure 

we all enjoyed both evenings. Kudos! 

The Mainstream class of 16 students 

graduated on May 2 at a moving ceremony 

by Whit Brown. Thirteen students were 

initiated into the club May 9th and now 

we are having fun dancing with them on 

Wednesday nights. Whit plans another 16- 

week Mainstream class starting Tuesday, 

August 7. Another Plus class is also in the

A new governing board was installed 

in June. Incoming Presidents George and 

Shirley Knapp are joined by a new board of 

directors to lead the club on to the next 50 

years. Following the installation ceremony, 

we enjoyed an ice cream social and both 

Mainstream and Plus dancing.

the vendors’ hall. Our club members again 

met Saturday afternoon to enjoy the country 

buffet at Fred’s country buffet.

USDA Florida Delegate Report 

In our initial report for the April issue of 

Bow & Swing, we outlined the history, purposes 

and evolution of USDA into a 501C3 

non-profit organization for the purposes of 

promoting dancing. Since the founding of 

USDA, June 26, 1981, we have become the 

world’s largest Square Dance organization 

and “the only National Dancers Association 

for dancers and operated by Dancers.” 

It is interesting to note that Florida was one 

of nine states who were charter members 

of USDA. The others were Delaware, Alabama, 

Arkansas, Missouri, California, Colorado, 

North Dakota and New Mexico. There 

are now 45 states affiliated with USDA. 

Often times dancers at the club level 

may ask what specific benefits do we 

receive from belonging to the National 

Organization of USDA. In our April report, 

we outlined the general purposes of USDA. 

Over the next several months, we will outline 

more specific benefits that USDA membership 

provides to the member clubs and to 

individual members of those states that are 

affiliated with the National Organization. 

One of these benefits is the library of 

free educational materials that are available 

to members. The educational materials cover 

nearly every conceivable subject dealing 

with the organization, management, special 

programs and ethics of square dancing. For 

example, there are pamphlets and booklets 

available on officers’ responsibilities, conducting 

meetings, graduations, insurance 

programs, handicapable programs, youth 

programs, etc. Over 100 panphlets and 

booklets available, obviously too many to 

mention in this report. All, however, are listed 

on the USDA website under the “USDA 

PUBLICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL 

MATERIALS” link. These materials are not 

copyrighted, and you are free to copy and 

distribute to others as needed. 

All of these educational materials are 

available from Linda and me by contacting

at (904) 342-0777. In addition, the publications 

may be requested online directly from 

USDA or printed from the USDA website 

under educational materials. If more than 

10 copies are needed of any of the materials, 

there is a charge of $.50 for each pamphlet 

and $1.00 for booklets. At all major dances, 

we will have a rack of USDA Educational 

Materials related to the most popular subjects.

Dancers Insurance Program.

Paul Place Memorial Dance 

May 5, 2012, saw our first Paul Place Memorial 

Dance held at Strawberry Squares, 

under the auspices of Grand Squares International. 

We had six 

squares enjoying the 

three Callers that we 

had on Board – Sam 

Dunn, Rod Barngrover, 

and the host 

Caller Bill Boyd 

(who did a great job 

of keeping the evening 

flowing). Larry 

Beltcher from Alabama 

and Brad Tomlinson 

from Ormond 

Beach were not able 

to be there due to 

other commitments. Rounds were done 

by Jack Jenkins. It was good to see Dick 

Nordine, having a great time dancing with 

Jack’s wife Nell, as Jack was cueing. I asked 

Dick if he would like to cue, he said “I’m 

having such a great time dancing, let Jack 

do it.” He has known them for many years, 

and was talking about old times. Charlie 

Lovelace, and his wife Leona, were also 

having a great time dancing rounds to Jack. 

Linda Place was present, and gave a 

wonderful speech about how Paul loved 

to call Square Dancing and that this was 

his passion. She also mentioned how the 

Paul Place Memorial Dance got started 

four years ago. And how it was the Idea of 

Lili-Ann Gallagher. Paul’s Sister JoAnne 

was there, and they both said they would 

do whatever it takes to keep Paul’s Memory 

alive. Most of all they wanted this dance 

kept in Florida. Folks in Alabama have 

asked me to bring the dance to Alabama, as 

Paul Place called there as well. 

At the moment I don’t have next year’s 

date booked yet. The Strawberry Squares 

are working out a date, and I will make 

sure you will all know about it so that you 

can plan on being there, and support next 

year’s dance. 

The dance raised $600 last night, and the 

money is being sent to Kim Curlee of Grand 

Squares International. Check out the website 

for more information, on the funds and 

the Caller School (www.grandsquareinc. 

com) there has also 

been money sent to 

GSI before hand by 

some people who 

could not make the 

dance.

started off with Paul

Long Black Train. It was good to hear his 

voice, and we remembered his calling. It 

was also good to see Penny Green in attendance, 

check out Penny’s newsletter, she is 

just full of information. 

Our evening finished up with our Callers 

calling together, no rehearsal was needed 

they just got it right. Their voices just 

blended well together. I would like to take 

this moment to thank them for doing such a 

great job and most of all supporting the Paul 

Place Memorial Dance.
