INTRODUCI'ION<br />

<strong>Teacher</strong> assistants have become valuable members of the educational support staff <strong>for</strong> students<br />

with special academic, physical <strong>and</strong>/or behavioural needs. Often the support provided by a teacher<br />

assistant is the essential component in the successful inclusion of special needs students.<br />

As teacher assistant support has increased steadily over the past several years, the need to clarify<br />

specific job functions, the quality of support given to students <strong>and</strong> the responsibilities of the<br />

educational staff working with the teacher assistant has become imperative.<br />

This document is to assist teachers, principals, district level personnel <strong>and</strong> teacher assistants in<br />

clarifying the st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>for</strong> the employment, job functions <strong>and</strong> evaluation of teacher assistants.<br />
