About This Project. Australian <strong>Aquatic</strong> Biological Pty. Ltd. conducts aquatic research around Australia.<br />

Two of the major projects currently being conducted are Project No. 100001, the Australian Craysh Project<br />

(ACP) and Project No. 100038, the Australian <strong>Aquatic</strong> Biodiversity <strong>Survey</strong> (AABS). The aims of these<br />

projects are <strong>to</strong> survey the whole of Australia, <strong>to</strong> record and identify every species of freshwater fauna and<br />

their distributions. The present report embodies the ndings for a subset of the ACP, Project No. 100056<br />

<strong>Aquatic</strong> Biodiversity <strong>Survey</strong> and Baseline Mapping of Freshwater Craysh and <strong>Aquatic</strong> Species of the<br />

Gosford LGA. Project 10056 is major sponsored by Gosford City Council<br />

<strong>Report</strong> Summary<br />

Biological surveys were undertaken as part of both the broad Australian Craysh Project (ACP)<br />

and Australian <strong>Aquatic</strong> Biological <strong>Survey</strong> (AABS) and a targeted sub-project on the Gosford<br />

LGA, Project 100056, Australian <strong>Aquatic</strong> Biological 2010. The main sponsors for this project<br />

were Australian <strong>Aquatic</strong> Biological and Gosford City Council under their Ecological Research<br />

Grants Program 2010 that was assisting with biological research projects for the whole Gosford<br />

LGA. <strong>Survey</strong>s of the Gosford LGA are completed on a catchment/drainage basis and the <strong>Mangrove</strong><br />

<strong>Creek</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Wisemans</strong> <strong>Ferry</strong> area is the tenth area surveyed completely as part of the broader Gosford<br />

LGA project.<br />

The area was surveyed between July 2009 and March 2012, over this period the creeks and streams<br />

varied from dry <strong>to</strong> strong owing. The ndings of these surveys are presented in this report. Note:<br />

Glenworth Valley was surveyed in July 2009 as part of the ACP and the results of that survey are<br />

included in this report.<br />

This area is a mixture of small scattered rural catchments and pristine mountain catchments,<br />

protected by a series of National Parks, State Forests and Reserves. The area includes the water<br />

supply schemes of <strong>Mangrove</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> Dam and <strong>Mangrove</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> Weir supplying freshwater <strong>to</strong> the<br />

residents of the Central Coast.<br />

As a water supply catchment it was hoped that the feeding streams would be in good condition<br />

and our surveys conrm this expectation. The streams were without exotic weed outbreaks and<br />

generally free of exotic pest sh species. The native riparian zones where mostly intact and native<br />

species were plentiful throughout the survey area. <strong>Aquatic</strong> conditions in the vast majority of survey<br />

sites were excellent and native species were thriving<br />

Of signicance was the discovery of the yabby Cherax destruc<strong>to</strong>r within the catchment. This is the<br />

rst record of this invasive species within the catchment and it represents a serious threat <strong>to</strong> native<br />

craysh and frog species.<br />

<strong>Aquatic</strong> biodiversity and population densities across the catchment were very good and surveying<br />

the area was a pleasure. The full results of this aquatic biodiversity survey are presented in this<br />

report.<br />

1 Background<br />

The Gosford LGA is experiencing rapid growth<br />

and development. This high population coastal<br />

area represents a signicant environmental asset<br />

that is fundamentally important <strong>to</strong> our lifestyle<br />

and economy. Implementing the infrastructure<br />

needed <strong>to</strong> support the increased population,<br />

agriculture and <strong>to</strong>urism must be undertaken<br />

so as <strong>to</strong> minimize or avoid ecological impacts<br />

on coastal vegetation, wetlands and threatened<br />

species. It is essential that management agencies<br />

have the information on hand <strong>to</strong> wisely plan the<br />

development and future of these fragile coastal<br />

regions. Additionally, Gosford LGA will be<br />

increasingly affected by global warming and<br />

climate change. Any decisions made <strong>to</strong>day<br />

could have lasting effects on the biodiversity<br />

of this coastal area. Currently, however,<br />

management agencies do not have access <strong>to</strong><br />

all the appropriate information <strong>to</strong> enable the<br />

protection of our coastal crustacean and sh<br />

species and their fragile aquatic habitats.<br />

Over the last few years the Australian Craysh<br />

Project (ACP) and Australian <strong>Aquatic</strong><br />

Biodiversity <strong>Survey</strong> (AABS) has been surveying<br />

eastern Australia for freshwater craysh and<br />

other aquatic fauna. These surveys have made<br />

numerous important discoveries. In addition<br />

<strong>to</strong> recording new knowledge and describing<br />

several new species of craysh in the region,<br />

the survey has also revealed that an alarming<br />

proportion of the region’s endemic species<br />

appear <strong>to</strong> be facing serious threats.<br />

With the support of Gosford City Council the<br />

whole of the Gosford LGA will be surveyed on<br />

a catchment by catchment basis and the results<br />

collected will greatly increase the knowledge<br />

base and allow better management of these fragile<br />

coastal ecosystems and help the conservation of<br />

our aquatic species. Additionally, results of the<br />

surveys are included within the ACP and AABS<br />

databases and the Ofce of Environment and<br />

Heritage’s, Atlas of NSW Wildlife database.<br />

2 Introduction<br />

The majority Central Coast Region is mostly<br />

pristine natural bushland protected by Yengo,<br />

Dharug and Popran National Parks, McPherson<br />

State Forest and large catchment reserves.<br />

Some of the upper catchment around Bucketty,<br />

Kulnura and <strong>Mangrove</strong> Mountain being semi<br />

rural developments and some smaller industrial<br />

areas. The catchment includes <strong>Mangrove</strong> <strong>Creek</strong><br />

Dam and <strong>Mangrove</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> Weir supplying<br />

freshwater <strong>to</strong> the residents of the Central<br />

Coast. This survey includes <strong>Mangrove</strong> <strong>Creek</strong><br />

catchment, the creeks and streams draining<br />

directly <strong>to</strong> the Hawkesbury River between<br />

Spencer and <strong>Wisemans</strong> <strong>Ferry</strong> and then streams<br />

between <strong>Wisemans</strong> <strong>Ferry</strong> and Bucketty. The<br />

results of our aquatic survey are recorded in this<br />

report<br />

AABio biological surveying is divided in<strong>to</strong><br />

3 Aim of This Study<br />

The primary aim of Project No. 100056<br />

is <strong>to</strong> determine what freshwater craysh<br />

occur where in the Gosford LGA. Primarily<br />

freshwater craysh are the priority and the<br />

Gosford LGA represents a signicant area for<br />

craysh distributions, yet little is known on<br />

the distributions of craysh in this area. Prior<br />

<strong>to</strong> the start of this research project only two<br />

species have recorded distributions within the<br />

LGA (Euastacus australasiensis and Euastacus<br />

spinifer) yet the extent of their distribution are<br />

unknown. Additionally, the area includes a<br />

number of coastal lagoons, lakes and streams all<br />

with independent catchments draining directly<br />

<strong>to</strong> the Tasman Sea that have been isolated from<br />

each other for millions of years and many<br />

containing unrecorded craysh species.<br />

The project also records information on all the<br />

other aquatic fauna found in the LGA as well<br />

as information on landforms and vegetation.<br />

All this is in order <strong>to</strong> facilitate the better<br />

conservation and management of the aquatic<br />

ecosystems of the Gosford LGA.<br />

Note: For environmental and hygiene reasons<br />

(transfer of pests, diseases and weeds, etc.)<br />

each of the catchments are treated as individual<br />

systems and are surveyed separately with<br />

equipment and personnel being sterilized<br />

4 Research Methods<br />

A large number of sites within the catchment<br />

were surveyed (Maps 1-3) <strong>to</strong> identify potential<br />

habitat areas and species present. The survey<br />

was relatively unobtrusive and consisted of<br />

various methods.<br />

4.1 Methods<br />

Site co-ordinates and altitude were recorded<br />

using a Magellan Explorist 600 handheld GPS.<br />

Specimens were collected using a variety of<br />

methods <strong>to</strong> suit the conditions at each survey<br />

site.<br />

Visual observation of craysh presence/<br />

activity. Generally, burrowing activity is<br />

the most common indication of craysh<br />

in the area, although visual observation<br />

is also often a useful technique <strong>to</strong> record<br />

the presence of craysh that are active<br />

on the forest oor or stream bed during<br />

sampling.<br />

Visual search for shell fragments and<br />

remnants of craysh or molluscs.<br />

Craysh moult their shells <strong>to</strong> grow a<br />

new larger shell discarding the old shell,<br />

they lose claws due <strong>to</strong> ghting or claws<br />

are left from animal predation. Snail and<br />

mussel shells are often stranded as water<br />

recedes or carried onshore by preda<strong>to</strong>rs.<br />

Searching for shell remnants can give a<br />

good indication of the species present,<br />

the numbers of animals in the population<br />

and an indication of the preda<strong>to</strong>rs in the<br />

area feeding on the craysh/molluscs as<br />

each preda<strong>to</strong>r has its own signature re<br />

shell remains.<br />

Active netting. Scoop nets were used<br />

<strong>to</strong> scoop the bot<strong>to</strong>m sediments, under<br />

logs, through leaf litter, under banks<br />

or through reedy sections, etc. This<br />

is a particularly important method <strong>to</strong><br />

detect species that do not respond <strong>to</strong><br />

baits or traps and particularly effective<br />

in muddy/turbid water. Three scoop nets<br />

were utilized: Small - 300 mm diameter<br />

hand held scoop. Medium - rectangular<br />

rake with 600 mm x 200 mm opening.<br />

Large - 600 mm x 700 mm scoop net.<br />

Structure removal and probing. Craysh<br />

and molluscs shelter under rocks and<br />

logs, etc. and time was allocated <strong>to</strong><br />

lifting such shelter objects and searching<br />

by hand for fauna. This is another<br />

particularly important method <strong>to</strong> detect<br />

species that do not respond <strong>to</strong> traps or<br />

nets.<br />

Burrow excavation by hand. Most<br />

craysh species construct burrows, thus<br />

an integral part of the survey involved<br />

careful excavation of burrows by hand <strong>to</strong><br />

search for craysh. This is a particularly<br />

important method <strong>to</strong> detect species that<br />

do not respond <strong>to</strong> traps or nets.<br />

AABio collec<strong>to</strong>rs use small box traps<br />

for freshwater collecting. They are<br />

baited with sh and left for a designated<br />

period of time. These type traps have<br />

a steel ring entrance so larger air<br />

breathing animals cannot enter and any<br />

aquatic animals captured will stay alive<br />

and can be returned <strong>to</strong> the water after<br />

identication.<br />

Most animals were examined at the collection site<br />

and released after identication. Some voucher<br />

material was retained where appropriate, and<br />

all retained specimens were placed in transport<br />

containers with a small amount of water and<br />

some vegetation from the site and returned <strong>to</strong><br />

the labora<strong>to</strong>ry. Selected specimens were placed<br />

in glass aquaria and pho<strong>to</strong>graphed. Crustacean<br />

specimens were then euthanized by freezing for<br />

and capture freshwater aquatic animals for<br />

identication across the survey area. However,<br />

AABio employs a code of practice that is<br />

designed <strong>to</strong> limit the transfer of any pests and<br />

diseases from one catchment <strong>to</strong> another. For<br />

each catchment, separate traps and nets are<br />

DPI Fisheries under Scientic Collection Permit<br />

5 Results and Discussion<br />

Please note that results listed here are indicative<br />

only. This is just a snapshot of the species at<br />

that site at that time and reects the species<br />

throughout the system. Over time, during<br />

different conditions, different species or<br />

numbers may be present.<br />

5.1 Crustaceans<br />

5.1.1 Freshwater craysh.<br />

Prior <strong>to</strong> this research project only Euastacus<br />

australasiensis and Euastacus spinifer were<br />

recorded from the Gosford LGA. Additionally,<br />

coastal habitats in NSW are know <strong>to</strong> contain<br />

two undescribed species of freshwater craysh<br />

of genus Tenuibranchiurus and Gramastacus<br />

and these were also targeted. Neither Euastacus<br />

australasiensis and Euastacus spinifer have<br />

been previously recorded from the <strong>Mangrove</strong><br />

<strong>Creek</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>Wisemans</strong> <strong>Ferry</strong> region but they were<br />

expected <strong>to</strong> occur in the region.<br />

<strong>Survey</strong> No. 100056-1 of Wamberal Lagoon<br />

identied two species of craysh in that<br />

catchment, an endemic species Gramastacus<br />

sp. and an invasive introduced species Cherax<br />

destruc<strong>to</strong>r. Both these species were specically<br />

searched for in the area, unfortunately we did<br />

nd Cherax destruc<strong>to</strong>r within the survey area.<br />

Both Wyong LGA <strong>to</strong> the north and Gosford<br />

LGA <strong>to</strong> the south represent a signicant<br />

freshwater craysh distribution area. Though<br />

the knowledge base is small there seems <strong>to</strong> be<br />

a cut off line roughly running from Wamberal<br />

Lagoon, through Narara and then up through<br />

Central <strong>Mangrove</strong> that represents a species<br />

distribution line with one species Euastacus<br />

spinifer occurring on both sides, two species<br />

(Cherax se<strong>to</strong>sus and Gramastacus sp.) only<br />

north of the line and one species Euastacus<br />

australasiensis only south of the line. This<br />

project will map that line and the distribution<br />

of these craysh species along that line and the<br />

surrounding region. A scientic manuscript on<br />

those ndings is proposed.<br />

5.1.2 Euastacus craysh<br />

We were able <strong>to</strong> conrm the presence of<br />

Euastacus australasiensis within the upper<br />

catchments of the survey area. The species was<br />

in good numbers at the survey sites. WPT111,<br />

WPT136, WPT124.<br />

5.1.4 Cherax craysh<br />

Yabbies Cherax destruc<strong>to</strong>r unfortunately<br />

were found within the catchment. They are an<br />

invasive species that has the ability <strong>to</strong> grow<br />

fast, breed from only 6 months of age and have<br />

large broods multiple times per year. They are<br />

a problematic species that is known <strong>to</strong> have<br />

adverse effects on native fauna. This is the rst<br />

record of this pest species within <strong>Mangrove</strong><br />

<strong>Creek</strong> drainage and it is disappointing. At this<br />

time the species was only recorded from the<br />

one creek system so it seems newly established.<br />

We were able <strong>to</strong> conrm the presence of<br />

Euastacus spinifer which was well distributed<br />

in exceptionally good numbers throughout<br />

the catchment. WPT030, WPT105, WPT107,<br />

WPT112, WPT123, WPT132, WPT126,<br />

WPT102, WPT103, WPT104, WPT135.<br />

5.1.5 Freshwater shrimp - Atyidae<br />

Freshwater Shrimp were recorded from the<br />

catchment. The conditions looked perfect<br />

for them and we expected them <strong>to</strong> be well<br />

distributed. WPT114, WPT121, WPT131,<br />

WPT127.<br />

5.1.3 Gramastacus craysh<br />

No Gramastacus craysh have been<br />

collected within any of the catchment areas<br />

surveyed. Some potentially suitable habitat<br />

areas were recorded from the survey area but<br />

no craysh were observed.<br />

5.1.6 Freshwater crabs<br />

Freshwater crabs were targeted in this greater<br />

survey of the Gosford LGA. This is the tenth<br />

and nal survey of the region and <strong>to</strong> date we<br />

have not found any <strong>to</strong>tally freshwater crabs in<br />

any of the freshwater environments.<br />

5.2 Fish Species<br />

5.2.1 Poeciliidae<br />

The plague minnow or mosqui<strong>to</strong> sh Gambusia<br />

holbrooki are an introduced species that is a major<br />

pest and is having devastating repercussions on<br />

our native species. Mosqui<strong>to</strong> sh Gambusia<br />

holbrooki were recorded from this catchment.<br />

Most of the creek systems were in pristine<br />

condition with intact riparian zones. Mosqui<strong>to</strong><br />

sh prefer slow moving water with open sky,<br />

they don’t like owing water with a heavy<br />

canopy. Most of the upper catchments had good<br />

canopies and most of the records of this species<br />

are from the streams through rural areas with<br />

open sky creeks. WPT106, WPT113, WPT107,<br />

WPT121, WPT131, WPT134, WPT124.<br />

Their robust nature and bright colouration<br />

makes them popular as an aquarium species<br />

and they are not normally found in natural<br />

waterways of NSW. They have been identied<br />

from other catchments, Mooney Mooney <strong>Creek</strong><br />

and Pearl Beach within the Gosford LGA but<br />

they were not recorded in this survey which was<br />

excellent news.<br />

5.2.3 Pseudomugilidae<br />

Pacic blue-eyes Pseudomugil signier were<br />

not observed in the catchment.<br />

5.2.4 Eleotridae<br />

The creek systems were perfect for gudgeons<br />

and the gudgeon numbers recorded from<br />

numerous sites were exceptional reecting the<br />

pristine conditions of the catchment.<br />

Other pest and exotic sh species like White<br />

Cloud Mountain minnows, swordtails, guppies,<br />

mollies, carp and goldsh were all absent<br />

from the catchment. Much of eastern NSW<br />

is impacted by these pest species and their<br />

absence in the survey area was fantastic news<br />

and very encouraging for the future health of<br />

the local environment and prosperity of the<br />

native aquatic fauna.<br />

5.2.2 Cyprinidae<br />

The White Cloud Mountain minnow (Tanichthys<br />

albonubes) is an introduced freshwater sh<br />

species usually restricted <strong>to</strong> home sh tanks. It<br />

is a robust species and a member of the carp<br />

family being a native of China.<br />

Striped gudgeons Gobiomorphus australis were<br />

common at many survey sites, being in huge<br />

numbers at some sites. They are a s<strong>to</strong>ut gudgeon<br />

best identied by ve <strong>to</strong> seven dark stripes<br />

on their side and a dark bar running from the<br />

rear of the eye. WPT114, WPT115, WPT116,<br />

WPT119, WPT120, WPT134.<br />

Empire gudgeons Hypseleotris compressa were<br />

common at several sites. They are a medium<br />

sized gudgeon preferring reeds and weeds <strong>to</strong> hide<br />

in during the day. They are best distinguished<br />

by a series of white dots on the rear of the dorsal<br />

n. WPT115, WPT116, WPT117, WPT118.<br />

5.2.7 Pro<strong>to</strong>troctidae<br />

Australian smelts Retropinna semoni were<br />

recorded from Mogo <strong>Creek</strong>. They are an<br />

elongated slender body sh with a light olive<br />

green back and an almost transparent look.<br />

5.2.5 Galaxiidae<br />

Common jollytails (Galaxias maculatus) were<br />

surprisingly not recorded from the catchment.<br />

5.2.6 Anguillidae<br />

Freshwater eels, both long nned (Anguilla<br />

reinhardtii) and short nned (Anguilla australis)<br />

were expected <strong>to</strong> be in most of the permanent<br />

creek systems, however, they were not targeted<br />

in this survey. The area was perfect for eels and<br />

we expected them at most locations. They were<br />

observed at WPT114.<br />

5.3.1 Planorbidae<br />

5.4 Macroinvertebrates/Insect<br />

Larvae and Tadpoles<br />

Mud-eyes, beetles, bugs and tadpoles were<br />

in exceptionally good numbers in all creeks<br />

and swamps. The good quality water and<br />

habitat across the area was very suitable <strong>to</strong><br />

macroinvertebrates and tadpoles, etc. WPT030,<br />

WPT106, WPT108, WPT110, WPT118,<br />

WPT119, WPT120, WPT121, WPT122,<br />

WPT123, WPT131, WPT134, WPT125,<br />

WPT126, WPT127.<br />

5.5 Birds<br />

Birds were not a part of this survey, and aquatic<br />

birds were not recorded from the catchment.<br />

Most of the catchment had intact riparian zones<br />

that are unsuitable for many aquatic birds. Only<br />

ducks were observed on the larger ponds in the<br />

rural catchments.<br />

5.6 Site Results<br />

Generally the survey area was in an excellent<br />

state without any large aquatic weed outbreaks,<br />

most streams were in excellent condition.<br />

5.6.1 Central <strong>Mangrove</strong><br />

WPT030 Popran <strong>Creek</strong> crossing <strong>Wisemans</strong><br />

<strong>Ferry</strong> Rd. Here the creek was clear owing<br />

over a mostly sandy substrate through eucalypt<br />

forest, occasional loose rocks, aquatic weeds.<br />

The creek looks pristine, and was full of<br />

Euastacus spinifer juveniles by the dozen and<br />

large dragony larvae (coutas).<br />

<strong>Ferry</strong> Road, a small clear owing creek with<br />

cobbled substrate through the forest (banksias,<br />

eucalypts), looks pristine. We surveyed the creek<br />

directly below the culvert under <strong>Wisemans</strong> <strong>Ferry</strong><br />

Road. As we approached a large Euastacus<br />

spinifer was prowling in the creek. We managed<br />

several pho<strong>to</strong>s before it withdrew in<strong>to</strong> the pipe<br />

5.6.2 <strong>Mangrove</strong> Mountain<br />

WPT106 Tributary of <strong>Mangrove</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> crossing<br />

Waratah Road. This is a small clear owing creek<br />

with cumbungi or bulrush (Typha sp), native lily<br />

(Alocasia brisbanensis) and scattered eucalypts.<br />

There was duck weed on the surface, with lots<br />

of plague minnows Gambusia holbrooki and<br />

large numbers of caddis larvae. The creek was<br />

draining a rural property with dams on the creek<br />

and duckweed on those dams.<br />

WPT109 Crafts <strong>Creek</strong> crossing Maroney Rd,<br />

this is a small owing stream, with sandy/silty<br />

substrates, some iron bacteria scattered gums,<br />

ferns, Gymea lilies and wattles. Unfortunately,<br />

we discovered an invasive species of freshwater<br />

craysh (yabbies Cherax destruc<strong>to</strong>r) thriving<br />

in this creek. This is the rst record of this<br />

invasive species in the catchment. Tadpoles and<br />

macroinvertebrates were also common.<br />

WPT110 Ironbark <strong>Creek</strong> crossing Ironbark<br />

Road. This was a clear strong owing creek,<br />

sands<strong>to</strong>ne bedrock, sandy patches and scattered<br />

gums. The creek had large deep pools that<br />

looked fantastic for large crays and sh, pacic<br />

black ducks were paddling on the ponds and<br />

lizards (water dragons and water skinks) along<br />

the edges. Nothing, except macroinvertebrates,<br />

tadpoles, backswimmers, mudeyes, etc. in the<br />

shallow pools.<br />

WPT113 Bedlam <strong>Creek</strong> crossing Berecry Road.<br />

This small clear owing creek with willows,<br />

camphor laurels and scattered gums along the<br />

banks, sandy substrate, duckweed. Only plague<br />

minnows Gambusia holbrooki were present in<br />

large numbers.<br />

WPT111, Tributary of Iron Bark <strong>Creek</strong> crossing<br />

Ironbark Road. This small, clear owing stream<br />

had a clay/rock substrate. This tiny creek ows<br />

beneath banksias, tea tree, scattered gums. The<br />

deeper clear pools had Euastacus australasiensis<br />

and macroinvertebrates.<br />

5.6.3 Upper <strong>Mangrove</strong><br />

WPT107, Tributary of Dubbo <strong>Creek</strong> crossing<br />

Dubbo Gully Rd, It was a small clear owing<br />

creek through native forest, with sands<strong>to</strong>ne<br />

bedrock and small sandy pools, ferns and Gymea<br />

lillies. The Gymea lily Doryanthes excelsa is a<br />

owering plant indigenous <strong>to</strong> the coastal areas<br />

of New South Wales and extremely common<br />

throughout the area. Only Euastacus spinifer<br />

and macroinvertebrates were present.<br />

downstream, ferns, cabbage palms, shrubs, rock<br />

compressa and striped gudgeon Gobiomorphus<br />

5.6.5 Greengrove<br />

WPT114, Bedlam <strong>Creek</strong> beside <strong>Wisemans</strong><br />

<strong>Ferry</strong> Road. The stream is owing clear and<br />

strong, with sand and rock substrate with logs<br />

and leaf litter with steep banks and shaded by<br />

forest. The stream was brimming full of striped<br />

gudgeons, literally thousands of them. There<br />

were also Atyidae shrimp and freshwater eels.<br />

WPT116 Mill <strong>Creek</strong> Road, at the end in<br />

Dharug National Park camping area. The<br />

stream is clear owing through the forest, it is<br />

well shaded. The creek has a sandy substrate<br />

with shallow sections and deeper pools; the<br />

creek was teeming with gudgeons. Both empire<br />

gudgeons Hypseleotris compressa and striped<br />

gudgeons Gobiomorphus australis.<br />

When rst surveyed in January 2011 this site<br />

was a dry stream bed with hundreds of burrows.<br />

The reason for this very high burrow numbers<br />

was unknown. The site had sandy clay ground<br />

with erect rushes Juncus sp., tea trees and swamp<br />

banksia. The burrows were down in<strong>to</strong> water the<br />

table 1 m down, after serious excavation we<br />

found Euastacus spinifer in the burrows. When<br />

the site was surveyed again in April 2012 it was<br />

ooded with a tannin coloured owing stream,<br />

reed, tee tree, scattered paperbarks and was full<br />

of tadpoles, macroinvertebrates.<br />

Road. Here the creek was clearish/slightly<br />

tannin coloured, with a strong ow over a sandy<br />

Williams Road. This was an excellent looking<br />

creek, it was clear owing through native forest,<br />

it had a course sand and loose rock substrate.<br />

There were heaps of Euastacus spinifer plus<br />

tadpoles and macroinvertebrates.<br />

5.6.8 Kulnura<br />

WPT124 Tributary of <strong>Mangrove</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> crossing<br />

Kyola Road. The stream was clear and slightly<br />

owing with a sandy/rock substrate with heavy<br />

leaf litter through native forest, (eucalypts,<br />

Gymea lilies). Sandy soil banks, scattered<br />

sunlight, with lots of macroinvertebrates<br />

(mudeyes, boatmen, backswimmers) tadpoles<br />

and Euastacus australasiensis.<br />

surrounded by bracken ferns. Lots of leaches<br />

and Euastacus spinifer.<br />

full of tadpoles and frogs.<br />

6 Conclusion<br />

Both the giant spiny craysh Euastacus<br />

spinifer and the Sydney craysh Euastacus<br />

australasiensis were conrmed from the survey<br />

area which was a key component of the greater<br />

research project. Both these species were<br />

in exceptionally good numbers in relatively<br />

pristine creeks. Unfortunately, we also<br />

discovered an invasive species of freshwater<br />

craysh the yabby Cherax destruc<strong>to</strong>r within the<br />

survey area. Only found at one site which was<br />

good news but even so it must be considered<br />

a serious threat and environmental issue. The<br />

long term ramication on the native species of<br />

the region is unknown but cannot be good as<br />

this invasive species has been shown in the past<br />

<strong>to</strong> have negative impacts on native craysh and<br />

frogs.<br />

Tadpoles, frogs and macroinvertebrates were<br />

common and widespread in exceptionally good<br />

numbers across the catchment<br />

With intact riparian zones and pristine water,<br />

the habitat is unsuitable for most exotic<br />

sh species. Exotic mosqui<strong>to</strong> sh or plague<br />

minnows Gambusia holbrooki were recorded<br />

from the catchment but were mostly restricted<br />

<strong>to</strong> the open semi-rural areas or lower sections of<br />

the catchment. The majority of the survey area<br />

had intact riparian zones and was free of plague<br />

minnows. Native gudgeons were plentiful and<br />

some streams had exceptional numbers which<br />

reects the pristine conditions of so many of the<br />

streams in the area.<br />

7 Recommendations<br />

This survey records the current distribution<br />

of species and the status of the ecological<br />

health of streams in the <strong>Mangrove</strong> <strong>Creek</strong> and<br />

Hawkesbury catchments. Currently the streams<br />

are generally in excellent health and this survey<br />

provides a baseline for any future comparisons.<br />

The following recommendations are offered <strong>to</strong><br />

Gosford City Council for the survey area.<br />

<br />

<br />

Continued support and encouragement<br />

of local environmental community or<br />

landcare groups <strong>to</strong> continue with riparian<br />

regeneration and weed control, etc.<br />

Biodiversity moni<strong>to</strong>ring of the freshwater<br />

catchment streams on an ongoing basis<br />

would also be recommended. To obtain<br />

signicant information approximately<br />

10 sites should be moni<strong>to</strong>red for aquatic<br />

biodiversity twice per year (winter/<br />

summer) on the same day and then over<br />

time trends can be seen, etc.<br />

Water quality moni<strong>to</strong>ring of the<br />

freshwater catchment streams on<br />

an ongoing basis would also be<br />

recommended. To obtain signicant<br />

information approximately 10 sites<br />

should be moni<strong>to</strong>red for water quality<br />

twice per year (winter/summer) on the<br />

same day and then over time trends can<br />

be seen, etc.<br />

Continue <strong>to</strong> educate the residents<br />

and commercial entities on pollution<br />

reduction at source.<br />

Continue <strong>to</strong> educate the residents and<br />

commercial entities on the dangers<br />

of exotic ora and fauna and the<br />

consequences of escape in<strong>to</strong> the<br />

environment.<br />

Continue <strong>to</strong> educate the residents and<br />

commercial entities on aquatic weeds<br />

and how <strong>to</strong> identify outbreaks, with<br />

moni<strong>to</strong>ring of their local streams <strong>to</strong><br />

identify outbreaks early.<br />

The discovery of small numbers<br />

of Cherax destruc<strong>to</strong>r a common<br />

recreational shing species creates an<br />

education problem as both slow growing,<br />

slow maturing native Euastacus craysh<br />

will be captured with the fast growing,<br />

fast maturing invasive Cherax craysh.<br />

Educating the shers and local residents<br />

should be a priority.<br />

<br />

Cleared riparian zones through rural<br />

areas encourage exotic sh and plant<br />

species and should be discouraged.<br />

S<strong>to</strong>ck should be fenced from the riparian<br />

areas and the banks replanted with native<br />

trees; this should be encouraged.<br />
