‘RUNNER REPORT: The ‘Runners traveled to San Francisco Friday for the 33rd Annual<br />

California Collegiates, where seven members <strong>of</strong> the squad placed in the top four. Brandon<br />

Zoetewey (San Ramon, Calif./De La Salle HS) earned the individual title at 125, while<br />

Frank Lomas (Bakersfield HS), Ernesto Ancona (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont HS) and Riley<br />

Orozco (Churchill County HS) all earned second place finishes. Meanwhile, Joey Granata<br />

(Oceanside, Calif/Fallbrook HS), who placed third, also won the Coach Haddad Award for<br />

most pins (5) in the tournament. On Saturday, CSUB hosted Oregon State in Pac-10 dual,<br />

falling 28-16. Zoetewey, Elijah Nactia (Bakersfield HS) and Mitch Monteiro (Paso Robles,<br />

Calif./Cuesta College) picked up wins for the shorthanded ‘Runners. Trevor Hall (Battle<br />

Ground HS) was held out <strong>of</strong> competition due to injury and Brandon Halsey (Vista, Calif./<br />

Fresno State) was also unavailable for action.<br />

STAT LEADERS: Sophomore Elijah Nacita leads the ‘Runners with 28 wins so far this season,<br />

followed by Brandon Zoetewey, Thomas Kimbrell (Dawsonville, Ga./Dawson County HS),<br />

Mitch Montiero with 21. Brandon Halsey holds the best win percentage (.857) with a 12-2<br />

overall record, while Joey Granata leads the way with 13 pins.<br />

RANKED ‘RUNNERS: For the first time ever, the NCAA has released a “Coaches Panel Ranking,”<br />

which will ultimately be one <strong>of</strong> the tools used as part <strong>of</strong> the selection process to determine<br />

the qualifiers for the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The first <strong>of</strong> three polls,<br />

with results through Jan. 18, lists six ‘Runners in the top 33. Those wrestlers include No. 19<br />

Brandon Zoetewey, No. 25 Thomas Kimbrell, No. 28 Elijah Nacita, No. 25 Riley Orozco,<br />

No. 6 Brandon Halsey and No. 7 Mitch Monteiro.<br />

ADDITIONAL POLLS: In the most recent USA Today/InterMat/NWCA poll (Feb. 3), Brandon<br />

Zoetewey remains No. 16, while Brandon Halsey is No. 7 and Mitch Monteiro is No. 6.<br />

Three ‘Runners appear in the latest W.I.N. Magazine national poll (Feb. 2). Zoetewey is<br />

No. 20, Halsey is No. 7 and Monteiro is No. 6.<br />

Halsey (No. 7) and Monteiro (No. 6) are also all ranked by Amateur Wrestling News (Feb.<br />

2).<br />

Six also appear in the individual rankings released Feb. 3 by Wrestlingreport.com.<br />

Zoetewey comes in at No. 20, Thomas Kimbrell is No. 27, Nacita is No. 27, Orozco is No. 31,<br />

Halsey is No. 4 and Monteiro is No. 7.<br />

PAC-10 RANKINGS: One ‘Runner remain listed in the No. 1 position in his respective weight<br />

class in the most recent Pac-10 rankings. Mitch Monteiro topped the list heavyweight, while<br />

Elijah Nacita (141) and Brandon Halsey (197) both come in at No. 2. Brandon Zoetewey<br />

(125), Thomas Kimbrell (133) and Jason Points (Bakersfield, Calif./San Diego State)<br />

(174) are all listed at No. 3, while Trevor Hall (157) and Joey Granata (165) come in at<br />

No. 4.<br />

CRACKING THE TOP 50: Brandon Zoetewey has broken into the CSUB record book, currently<br />

tied for No. 45 in career wins (69). Zoetewey entered his senior season with 48 victories and<br />

has 21 so far this season. He has two remaining dual matches on the 2008-09 schedule, along<br />

with the Pac-10 Championships and NCAA Championships.<br />

TOURNEY TITLE TIMES TWO: Brandon Halsey claimed his second individual title <strong>of</strong> the season<br />

Dec. 30 at the 2008 UNCG Southern Scuffle. His first title <strong>of</strong> the season came on Dec. 18<br />

at the Reno Tournament <strong>of</strong> Champions. Seeded No. 2 in Greensboro, Halsey knocked <strong>of</strong>f No. 9<br />

Eric Chine (Kent State), No. 6 Brent Jones (Virginia) and No. 1 Cayle Byers (George Mason).<br />

EIGHT STRAIGHT: Elijah Nacita may have dropped his opening-round match at the Reno<br />

Tournament <strong>of</strong> Champions, but the sophomore followed the disappointing performance with<br />

eight consecutive victories to place third in the 141 bracket. He won three bouts by fall,<br />

including a pin in just 48 seconds, four others by decision and one 16-2 major decision.<br />

FASTEST FALL: Sam Barnhart (Barstow HS) (149) holds the fastest fall by any ‘Runner so<br />

far this season. The sophomore pinned Douglas College’s Raj Rai in 25 seconds at the Menlo

A VEGAS CHAMP FOR THE FIRST TIME<br />

SINCE...: Mitch Monteiro’s individual title<br />

at the Las Vegas Invite marks the first time<br />

a CSUB wrestler won a championship at the<br />

tournament since 1999 when two-time All-<br />

American and national champion Stephen<br />

Neal took the heavyweight title. Neal also<br />

won the Las Vegas Invite title in 1998 and<br />

went undefeated both years.<br />

...AND A CHAMP AT RENO: Brandon Halsey<br />

made the most <strong>of</strong> his return to the mat for<br />

CSUB, claiming the 197 lb. individual title<br />

at the 2008 Reno Tournament <strong>of</strong> Champions<br />

in Dec. 18. The senior’s title was the third<br />

all-time for the Roadrunners and the first<br />

since 2003.<br />

25 YEARS AND COUNTING: With 36 total<br />

years <strong>of</strong> coaching under his belt, the 2008-<br />

09 season marks T.J. Kerr’s 25th at the helm<br />

<strong>of</strong> the CSUB program. Having surpassed the<br />

400-win mark midway through last season,<br />

Kerr’s all-time record now stands at 412-<br />

205-7, while his 24-plus year mark at CSUB<br />

is 230-135-4.<br />

to five seniors (Ernesto Ancona, Brandon<br />

Halsey, Thomas Kimbrell, Jason Points and<br />

Brandon Zoetewey) on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m.<br />

2008-09 ROADRUNNER <strong>WRESTLING</strong> DUAL MEET RESULTS<br />

CSUB 28, STANFORD 13<br />

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — CSUB won six <strong>of</strong> 10<br />

matches, including a pair <strong>of</strong> forfeits, to claim<br />

a 28-13 win over Pac-10 rival Stanford to<br />

open the season.<br />

Brandon Zoetewey started things <strong>of</strong>f with a<br />

13-0 major decision win at 125, and after a<br />

Cardinal win at 133, Elijah Nacita gave CSUB a<br />

7-4 lead with an 11-8 decision over Cameron<br />

Teitelman. Nacita overcame a third period<br />

7-5 deficit by scoring five points in the final<br />

minute.<br />

Stanford picked up 6-5 decision wins at 149<br />

and 157, but CSUB’s Joey Granata won by fall<br />

at 165 and Jason Points won by forfeit at 174<br />

to push the Roadrunners ahead, 19-10.<br />

The Cardinal’s Victor Haug came from behind<br />

to win 11-8 over CSUB’s Seamus Dean at 184,<br />

cutting the ‘Runner lead to 19-13. But Riley<br />

Orozco (197) easily put away Jake Johnson in<br />

a 12-5 decision and Mitch Monteiro collected<br />

six more points for the ‘Runners with a forfeit<br />

win at heavyweight.<br />

NAVY 26, CSUB 13<br />

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Senior Brandon<br />

Zoetewey earned an injury default win at<br />

125 to open CSUB’s dual against Navy, but<br />

the Midshipmen won six <strong>of</strong> the following<br />

nine matches for a 26-13 win over the<br />

Roadrunners.<br />

Elijah Nacita and Riley Orozco both earned<br />

their second wins <strong>of</strong> the day, but the only<br />

other ‘Runner to score team points was Trevor<br />

Hall as CSUB dropped to 1-1 on the season.<br />

Nacita used a seven-point first period to earn<br />

a 13-2 major decision over Jon Majka. He<br />

gave up just one takedown late in the third<br />

period, but closed things out with a reversal<br />

with 11 seconds remaining and added one<br />

point <strong>of</strong> riding time for the big win.<br />

At 157, Hall earned a three-point nearfall 30<br />

seconds into the second period to take a 5-3<br />

lead. The sophomore never relinquished the<br />

lead for the remainder <strong>of</strong> the match, winning<br />

10-7.<br />

Orozco went up 8-3 in the first period on<br />

Navy’s Philip Neese at 197, but Neese would<br />

score on an escape, takedown and two-point<br />

nearfall in the second period to tie the score,<br />

8-8. Orozco chose down for the final period,<br />

and used the position to his advantage,<br />

escaping just 14 seconds into the period,<br />

then earning a takedown with two seconds<br />

remaining for the 11-8 decision.<br />

got standout performances from Brandon<br />

Zoetewey, Thomas Kimbrell and Trevor Hall,<br />

but ultimately fell 25-14 to the No. 5 ranked<br />

Tigers at the Central Coast Duals.<br />

Zoetewey, ranked No. 15 in the latest USA<br />

Today/InterMat/NWCA national poll, gave the<br />

‘Runners six points right <strong>of</strong>f the bat against<br />

Missouri, pinning Troy Dolan at the 3:24 mark<br />

<strong>of</strong> the 125 bout.<br />

No. 20 ranked Kimbrell followed with a 14-4<br />

major decision at 133 over Luke Cherep to put<br />

CSUB up 10-0. A pair <strong>of</strong> CSUB losses at 141<br />

and 149 left the ‘Runners ahead 10-7, before<br />

a 14-5 major decision by Hall at 157 pushed<br />

the lead back to seven.<br />

Hall, a sophomore, picked up CSUB’s most<br />

impressive win <strong>of</strong> the day, knocking <strong>of</strong>f No. 4<br />

nationally ranked Mike Chandler, who had not<br />

lost a match yet this season.<br />

The Tigers took over after that, however,<br />

winning the final five weight classes for the<br />

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Facing a second<br />

consecutive top-20 ranked squad at the<br />

Central Coast Duals, the Roadrunners were<br />

able to win a trio <strong>of</strong> bouts, but ultimately fell<br />

26-12 to No. 12 ranked Oklahoma.<br />

Much like the dual against No. 5 Missouri<br />

earlier in the day, Brandon Zoetewey started<br />

things <strong>of</strong>f strong against the Sooners, winning<br />

a 10-9 decision over Joey Fio to put<br />

CSUB up 3-0.<br />

Thomas Kimbrell followed with an 8-4 decision<br />

over No. 19 ranked David Armstrong to<br />

give the ‘Runners a 6-0 lead and Trevor Hall<br />

added a fall victory over No. 16 ranked Shane<br />

Vernon at 157, but once again, no other<br />

‘Runner was able to pick up a win.<br />

impressive fourth place finish at the Reno<br />

Tournament <strong>of</strong> Champions just two days eariler,<br />

CSUB returned to the Icardo Center and<br />

easily claimed a 42-3 win over Cal Baptist.<br />

Against the Lancers, four ‘Runners won by fall<br />

and all but one CSUB wrestler was victorious<br />

in the runaway win.<br />

Sophomore Trevor Hall, who was forced to<br />

medical forfeit his final two matches at the<br />

Reno TOC, returned to the mat to claim a big<br />

14-3 major decision at 157 over Lamar Reed,<br />

who is ranked No. 8 nationally in the NAIA.<br />

Joey Granata (165), Jason Points (174) and<br />

Ernesto Ancona (184) followed with three<br />

consecutive falls and Brandon Halsey (197)<br />

earned 21-6 technical fall over Cal Baptist’s<br />

Vince Pezzuto to put the ‘Runner squad up<br />

At heavyweight, David Morgan won with an<br />

11-4 decision and Frank Lomas (125) scored<br />

the dual with a 3-1 decision, and Granata followed<br />

CSUB 36, ARIZONA STATE 15<br />

TEMPE, Ariz. — CSUB won seven <strong>of</strong> 10 matches,<br />

claiming a big 36-15 dual victory over<br />

Pac-10 rival Arizona State in the Wells Fargo<br />

Arena.<br />

The Roadrunners improve to 4-3 overall and<br />

remain perfect in the Pac-10 with a 3-0 mark.<br />

Opening at 149, CSUB’s Calvin Miller made<br />

quick work <strong>of</strong> ASU’s Josh Calteux, earning a<br />

fall victory at 2:36 to put the ‘Runners up<br />

6-0. Trevor Hall followed with an 18-3 technical<br />

fall over Tejovan Edwards at 157 and Joey<br />

Granata pinned Kyle DeBerry in 4:50 at 165<br />

to give CSUB a 17-0 advantage. Granata’s pin<br />

was the junior’s team-leading seventh <strong>of</strong> the<br />

season.<br />

At 174, Erik Starks gave the home team its<br />

first points <strong>of</strong> the night, claiming an 8-4<br />

decision over Troy Goodban. But CSUB’s<br />

Ernesto Ancona followed with a 6-2 decision<br />

over Jake Meredith at 184 and No. 16 nationally<br />

ranked Brandon Halsey improved to 12-1<br />

on the season by pinning Jake Cranford at<br />

197.<br />

In the heavyweight battle, Bakersfield’s Mitch<br />

Monteiro went ahead 7-0 early, then ultimately<br />

earned a win by fall over Imanibom<br />

Etukeren to give the ‘Runners a 32-3 lead.<br />

Monteiro, the No. 7 nationally ranked heavyweight,<br />

improved to 18-6 on the season.<br />

Redshirt freshman Frank Lomas put up a fight<br />

early against No. 8 ranked Anthony Robles,<br />

but the Sun Devil was able to put Lomas on<br />

his back, earning a pin victory for ASU at<br />

125.<br />

Keeping the Sun Devils from claiming consecutive<br />

wins, Thomas Kimbrell scored early<br />

and <strong>of</strong>ten in a 17-4 major decision over Angel<br />

Alegre at 133. Arizona State’s No. 5 ranked<br />

Chris Drouin closed things out with a fall victory<br />

SAN LUIS OBIPSO, Calif. — The CSUB wrestling<br />

team moved to a perfect 4-0 in Pac-10<br />

duals Friday, claiming a 24-10 win over Cal<br />

Poly at Mott Gym.<br />

The Roadrunners won seven matches, including<br />

the first three and the final four on their<br />

way to the 14-point win.<br />

David Morgan and Frank Lomas, both filling<br />

in for normal starters Mitch Monteiro and<br />

Brandon Zoetewey, started the night <strong>of</strong>f with<br />

back-to-back decisions at heavyweight and<br />

125 to give CSUB an early 6-0 lead. Thomas<br />

Kimbrell followed with a 12-2 major decision<br />

over the Mustangs Jake Tanenbaum at 133 to<br />

put the ‘Runners up 10-0.<br />

The heart <strong>of</strong> Cal Poly’s lineup then put<br />

together three consecutive wins at 141, 149<br />

and 157 to knot the score, 10-10.<br />

CSUB’s Elijah Nacita went toe-to-toe with No.<br />

17 nationally ranked Filip Novachkov, but<br />

in an effort to break a scoreless tie, Nacita<br />

gave up an escape with 26 seconds remaining<br />

and was unable to score down the stretch<br />

for a 1-0 loss. Cal Poly’s Eric Maldonado then<br />

majored Calvin Miller 7-5 and No. 9 nationally<br />

ranked Chase Pami topped Trevor Hall 6-2.<br />

After giving up the three wins, Bakersfield’s<br />

final four wrestlers took care <strong>of</strong> business with<br />

a pair <strong>of</strong> decisions and a pair <strong>of</strong> major decisions.<br />

Joey Granata defeated Joel Shaw, 6-1<br />

at 165 and Jason Points earned a 13-0 major<br />

decision win over Tyler Holt at 174.<br />

Drexel.<br />

The Roadrunners won eight <strong>of</strong> 10 bouts<br />

against the Dragons, including a pair <strong>of</strong> falls<br />

by Calvin Miller at 149 and Joey Granata<br />

at 165. Granata’s pin <strong>of</strong> the Dragons’ Scott<br />

Hunter was his team-leading eighth <strong>of</strong> the<br />

season. The CSUB junior has been perfect in<br />

matches by fall this season, 8-0.<br />

Frank Lomas, Elijah Nactia and Trevor Hall<br />

claimed shutout major decisions at 125, 141<br />

and 157, respectively, for three more ‘Runner<br />

wins. Thomas Kimbrell earned an 8-4 decision<br />

STANFORD, Calif. — CSUB concluded action<br />

at the Stanford Duals with a convincing<br />

26-15 win over Columbia. The win was the<br />

Roadrunners’ sixth consecutive dual victory<br />

and moved their season record to 7-3.<br />

The ‘Runners won six <strong>of</strong> 10 matches, beginning<br />

with Thomas Kimbrell’s 13-8 decision<br />

over Andrew Grabfelder at 133. Elijah Nacita<br />

followed with a 14-1 major decision over<br />

Shane Strumwasser at 141 and Calvin Miller<br />

recorded his second pin <strong>of</strong> the day, this time<br />

over Nick Standish.<br />

The Lions’ Derek Sickles picked up a 9-6 decision<br />

over Trevor Hall at 157, but CSUB put<br />

the dual away with a Joey Granata decision at<br />

165, a forfeit win at 174 and a Riley Orozco<br />

major decision at 184.<br />

Columbia would go on to win the final two<br />

bouts, a fall victory by Ryan Sutherland at<br />

BOISE, <strong>Idaho</strong> — Leading 12-8 midway<br />

through the dual against No. 10 nationally<br />

ranked Boise State, CSUB suffered losses in<br />

the final five bouts <strong>of</strong> the evening, falling<br />

26-12 to the Broncos at Taco Bell Arena.<br />

The Roadrunners entered the Pac-10 match-up<br />

riding a six-dual win streak, but fell to 7-4 on<br />

the season and 4-1 in conference action.<br />

A meet that featured nine total top-25 ranked<br />

wrestlers opened with No. 5 Brent Chriswell<br />

and No. 8 Brandon Halsey at 197. Chriswell<br />

led 4-2 after the opening period, scoring a<br />

pair <strong>of</strong> takedowns, while Halsey earned two<br />

escapes. Halsey chose down to start the second<br />

period, and cut his deficit to one with<br />

a quick escape, but he was unable to score<br />

again and Chriswell added an escape in the<br />

third for a 5-3 win.<br />

Bakersfield’s No. 9 ranked Mitch Monteiro<br />

put his team ahead 5-3 with a dominating<br />

18-1 technical fall victory over Sam Zylstra<br />

at heavyweight. No. 15 Brandon Zoetewey<br />

increased the Roadrunner lead to 8-3 with<br />

a tight 2-0 win over Boise’s Alan Bartelli at<br />

125.<br />

At 133, CSUB’s Thomas Kimbrell scored a<br />

quick takedown five seconds into the match,<br />

but those would be the only points the senior<br />

would manage as No. 4 Andrew Hochstrasser<br />

reeled <strong>of</strong>f 17 consecutive points for the technical<br />

fall win.<br />

Elijah Nacita pushed the CSUB lead to 12-8<br />

with an 8-0 major decision over Cory Fish at<br />

141, but it was all Boise State from there as<br />

the home team claimed wins in the final five<br />

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — CSUB dominated start<br />

to finish in a 34-7 pounding <strong>of</strong> Pac-10 rival<br />

UC Davis.<br />

Trevor Hall started the night <strong>of</strong>f with an 18-6<br />

major decision over the Aggies’ Joey Wilson<br />

at 157. Wilson scored a takedown early to go<br />

up 2-0, but Hall responded with two escapes,<br />

a takedown and a pair <strong>of</strong> two-point nearfalls<br />

in the first period to hold an 8-4 advantage.<br />

Hall stretched his lead to 12-6 after two<br />

periods, then scored a takedown, three-point<br />

nearfall and riding time in the third.<br />

Davis’ Dustin Noack cut the CSUB lead to<br />

4-3 with a 9-6 decision over Joey Granata at<br />

165, but Jason Points stretched the ‘Runner<br />

lead back to four with a 10-5 decision over<br />

Tyler Bernacchi at 174. Bernacchi entered the<br />

match ranked No. 1 in the latest Pac-10 poll,<br />

while Points was listed at No. 3.<br />

At 184, CSUB’s Riley Orozco improved to 4-1<br />

since moving down a weight class, claiming<br />

a 9-2 decision over John Clark. Orozco took a<br />

4-1 lead in the first period on a pair <strong>of</strong> takedowns,<br />

and only allowed Clark one more point<br />

in the final four minutes <strong>of</strong> action.<br />

Brandon Halsey, currently ranked No. 7 in<br />

the USA Today/Intermat/NWCA poll, pushed<br />

the ‘Runner lead to 16-3 with a forfeit victory<br />

at 197. No. 8 ranked Mitch Monteiro followed<br />

with a 10-2 major decision over John<br />

Thurston at heavyweight and No. 15 ranked<br />

Brandon Zoetewey earned a 16-0 technical fall<br />

Thomas Kimbrell won by forfeit at 133,<br />

and Elijah Nacita claimed a 10-4 decision over<br />

The Aggies were able to close out the night<br />

with a win at 149 as Barrett Abel earned an<br />

OREGON STATE 28, CSUB 16<br />

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Wins by Elijah Nacita,<br />

Mitch Monteiro and Brandon Zoetewey were<br />

not enough as CSUB fell 28-16 to visiting<br />

Oregon State.<br />

Nacita started the dual with a quick fall victory<br />

at 141. Oregon State’s Garrett Drucker<br />

scored a takedown 30 seconds in, but Nacita<br />

escaped moments later to trail 2-1. Then,<br />

with 11 seconds remaining in the first period,<br />

Nacita spun quickly on Drucker, putting the<br />

Beaver redshirt freshman on his back to earn<br />

the six-point fall win.<br />

Oregon State dominated the ensuing six<br />

bouts, however, beginning with a Heinrich<br />
