‘RUNNER REPORT: The ‘Runners traveled to San Francisco Friday for the 33rd Annual 

California Collegiates, where seven members of the squad placed in the top four. Brandon 

Zoetewey (San Ramon, Calif./De La Salle HS) earned the individual title at 125, while 

Frank Lomas (Bakersfield HS), Ernesto Ancona (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont HS) and Riley 

Orozco (Churchill County HS) all earned second place finishes. Meanwhile, Joey Granata 

(Oceanside, Calif/Fallbrook HS), who placed third, also won the Coach Haddad Award for 

most pins (5) in the tournament. On Saturday, CSUB hosted Oregon State in Pac-10 dual, 

falling 28-16. Zoetewey, Elijah Nactia (Bakersfield HS) and Mitch Monteiro (Paso Robles, 

Calif./Cuesta College) picked up wins for the shorthanded ‘Runners. Trevor Hall (Battle 

Ground HS) was held out of competition due to injury and Brandon Halsey (Vista, Calif./ 

Fresno State) was also unavailable for action. 

STAT LEADERS: Sophomore Elijah Nacita leads the ‘Runners with 28 wins so far this season, 

followed by Brandon Zoetewey, Thomas Kimbrell (Dawsonville, Ga./Dawson County HS), 

Mitch Montiero with 21. Brandon Halsey holds the best win percentage (.857) with a 12-2 

overall record, while Joey Granata leads the way with 13 pins. 

RANKED ‘RUNNERS: For the first time ever, the NCAA has released a “Coaches Panel Ranking,” 

which will ultimately be one of the tools used as part of the selection process to determine 

the qualifiers for the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The first of three polls, 

with results through Jan. 18, lists six ‘Runners in the top 33. Those wrestlers include No. 19 

Brandon Zoetewey, No. 25 Thomas Kimbrell, No. 28 Elijah Nacita, No. 25 Riley Orozco, 

No. 6 Brandon Halsey and No. 7 Mitch Monteiro. 

ADDITIONAL POLLS: In the most recent USA Today/InterMat/NWCA poll (Feb. 3), Brandon 

Zoetewey remains No. 16, while Brandon Halsey is No. 7 and Mitch Monteiro is No. 6. 

Three ‘Runners appear in the latest W.I.N. Magazine national poll (Feb. 2). Zoetewey is 

No. 20, Halsey is No. 7 and Monteiro is No. 6. 

Halsey (No. 7) and Monteiro (No. 6) are also all ranked by Amateur Wrestling News (Feb. 

2). 

Six also appear in the individual rankings released Feb. 3 by Wrestlingreport.com. 

Zoetewey comes in at No. 20, Thomas Kimbrell is No. 27, Nacita is No. 27, Orozco is No. 31, 

Halsey is No. 4 and Monteiro is No. 7. 

PAC-10 RANKINGS: One ‘Runner remain listed in the No. 1 position in his respective weight 

class in the most recent Pac-10 rankings. Mitch Monteiro topped the list heavyweight, while 

Elijah Nacita (141) and Brandon Halsey (197) both come in at No. 2. Brandon Zoetewey 

(125), Thomas Kimbrell (133) and Jason Points (Bakersfield, Calif./San Diego State) 

(174) are all listed at No. 3, while Trevor Hall (157) and Joey Granata (165) come in at 

No. 4. 

CRACKING THE TOP 50: Brandon Zoetewey has broken into the CSUB record book, currently 

tied for No. 45 in career wins (69). Zoetewey entered his senior season with 48 victories and 

has 21 so far this season. He has two remaining dual matches on the 2008-09 schedule, along 

with the Pac-10 Championships and NCAA Championships. 

TOURNEY TITLE TIMES TWO: Brandon Halsey claimed his second individual title of the season 

Dec. 30 at the 2008 UNCG Southern Scuffle. His first title of the season came on Dec. 18 

at the Reno Tournament of Champions. Seeded No. 2 in Greensboro, Halsey knocked off No. 9 

Eric Chine (Kent State), No. 6 Brent Jones (Virginia) and No. 1 Cayle Byers (George Mason). 

EIGHT STRAIGHT: Elijah Nacita may have dropped his opening-round match at the Reno 

Tournament of Champions, but the sophomore followed the disappointing performance with 

eight consecutive victories to place third in the 141 bracket. He won three bouts by fall, 

including a pin in just 48 seconds, four others by decision and one 16-2 major decision. 

FASTEST FALL: Sam Barnhart (Barstow HS) (149) holds the fastest fall by any ‘Runner so 

far this season. The sophomore pinned Douglas College’s Raj Rai in 25 seconds at the Menlo


Invite on Jan. 4. 

A VEGAS CHAMP FOR THE FIRST TIME 

SINCE...: Mitch Monteiro’s individual title 

at the Las Vegas Invite marks the first time 

a CSUB wrestler won a championship at the 

tournament since 1999 when two-time All- 

American and national champion Stephen 

Neal took the heavyweight title. Neal also 

won the Las Vegas Invite title in 1998 and 

went undefeated both years. 

...AND A CHAMP AT RENO: Brandon Halsey 

made the most of his return to the mat for 

CSUB, claiming the 197 lb. individual title 

at the 2008 Reno Tournament of Champions 

in Dec. 18. The senior’s title was the third 

all-time for the Roadrunners and the first 

since 2003. 

25 YEARS AND COUNTING: With 36 total 

years of coaching under his belt, the 2008- 

09 season marks T.J. Kerr’s 25th at the helm 

of the CSUB program. Having surpassed the 

400-win mark midway through last season, 

Kerr’s all-time record now stands at 412- 

205-7, while his 24-plus year mark at CSUB 

is 230-135-4.

to five seniors (Ernesto Ancona, Brandon 

Halsey, Thomas Kimbrell, Jason Points and 

Brandon Zoetewey) on Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. 

when they host San Francisco State in the

2008-09 ROADRUNNER WRESTLING DUAL MEET RESULTS 

CSUB 28, STANFORD 13 

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — CSUB won six of 10 

matches, including a pair of forfeits, to claim 

a 28-13 win over Pac-10 rival Stanford to 

open the season. 

Brandon Zoetewey started things off with a 

13-0 major decision win at 125, and after a 

Cardinal win at 133, Elijah Nacita gave CSUB a 

7-4 lead with an 11-8 decision over Cameron 

Teitelman. Nacita overcame a third period 

7-5 deficit by scoring five points in the final 

minute. 

Stanford picked up 6-5 decision wins at 149 

and 157, but CSUB’s Joey Granata won by fall 

at 165 and Jason Points won by forfeit at 174 

to push the Roadrunners ahead, 19-10. 

The Cardinal’s Victor Haug came from behind 

to win 11-8 over CSUB’s Seamus Dean at 184, 

cutting the ‘Runner lead to 19-13. But Riley 

Orozco (197) easily put away Jake Johnson in 

a 12-5 decision and Mitch Monteiro collected 

six more points for the ‘Runners with a forfeit 

win at heavyweight.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Senior Brandon 

Zoetewey earned an injury default win at 

125 to open CSUB’s dual against Navy, but 

the Midshipmen won six of the following 

nine matches for a 26-13 win over the 

Roadrunners. 

Elijah Nacita and Riley Orozco both earned 

their second wins of the day, but the only 

other ‘Runner to score team points was Trevor 

Hall as CSUB dropped to 1-1 on the season. 

Nacita used a seven-point first period to earn 

a 13-2 major decision over Jon Majka. He 

gave up just one takedown late in the third 

period, but closed things out with a reversal 

with 11 seconds remaining and added one 

point of riding time for the big win. 

At 157, Hall earned a three-point nearfall 30 

seconds into the second period to take a 5-3 

lead. The sophomore never relinquished the 

lead for the remainder of the match, winning 

10-7. 

Orozco went up 8-3 in the first period on 

Navy’s Philip Neese at 197, but Neese would 

score on an escape, takedown and two-point 

nearfall in the second period to tie the score, 

8-8. Orozco chose down for the final period, 

and used the position to his advantage, 

escaping just 14 seconds into the period, 

then earning a takedown with two seconds 

remaining for the 11-8 decision.

Tigers at the Central Coast Duals. 

Zoetewey, ranked No. 15 in the latest USA 

Today/InterMat/NWCA national poll, gave the 

‘Runners six points right off the bat against 

Missouri, pinning Troy Dolan at the 3:24 mark 

of the 125 bout. 

No. 20 ranked Kimbrell followed with a 14-4 

major decision at 133 over Luke Cherep to put 

CSUB up 10-0. A pair of CSUB losses at 141 

and 149 left the ‘Runners ahead 10-7, before 

a 14-5 major decision by Hall at 157 pushed 

the lead back to seven. 

Hall, a sophomore, picked up CSUB’s most 

impressive win of the day, knocking off No. 4 

nationally ranked Mike Chandler, who had not 

lost a match yet this season. 

The Tigers took over after that, however, 

winning the final five weight classes for the 

25-14 win.

Central Coast Duals, the Roadrunners were 

able to win a trio of bouts, but ultimately fell

Much like the dual against No. 5 Missouri 

earlier in the day, Brandon Zoetewey started 

things off strong against the Sooners, winning 

a 10-9 decision over Joey Fio to put 

CSUB up 3-0. 

Thomas Kimbrell followed with an 8-4 decision

Tournament of Champions just two days eariler, 

CSUB returned to the Icardo Center and 

easily claimed a 42-3 win over Cal Baptist. 

Against the Lancers, four ‘Runners won by fall 

and all but one CSUB wrestler was victorious 

in the runaway win. 

Sophomore Trevor Hall, who was forced to 

medical forfeit his final two matches at the 

Reno TOC, returned to the mat to claim a big 

14-3 major decision at 157 over Lamar Reed, 

who is ranked No. 8 nationally in the NAIA. 

Joey Granata (165), Jason Points (174) and 

Ernesto Ancona (184) followed with three 

consecutive falls and Brandon Halsey (197) 

earned 21-6 technical fall over Cal Baptist’s 

Vince Pezzuto to put the ‘Runner squad up

At heavyweight, David Morgan won with an 

11-4 decision and Frank Lomas (125) scored

Brady Garner gave the Vikings their first 

points of match with an 11-10 decision over

claiming a big 36-15 dual victory over 

Pac-10 rival Arizona State in the Wells Fargo 

Arena. 

The Roadrunners improve to 4-3 overall and 

remain perfect in the Pac-10 with a 3-0 mark. 

Opening at 149, CSUB’s Calvin Miller made 

quick work of ASU’s Josh Calteux, earning a 

fall victory at 2:36 to put the ‘Runners up 

6-0. Trevor Hall followed with an 18-3 technical 

fall over Tejovan Edwards at 157 and Joey 

Granata pinned Kyle DeBerry in 4:50 at 165 

to give CSUB a 17-0 advantage. Granata’s pin 

was the junior’s team-leading seventh of the 

season. 

At 174, Erik Starks gave the home team its 

first points of the night, claiming an 8-4 

decision over Troy Goodban. But CSUB’s 

Ernesto Ancona followed with a 6-2 decision 

over Jake Meredith at 184 and No. 16 nationally 

ranked Brandon Halsey improved to 12-1 

on the season by pinning Jake Cranford at 

197. 

In the heavyweight battle, Bakersfield’s Mitch 

Monteiro went ahead 7-0 early, then ultimately 

earned a win by fall over Imanibom 

Etukeren to give the ‘Runners a 32-3 lead. 

Monteiro, the No. 7 nationally ranked heavyweight, 

improved to 18-6 on the season. 

Redshirt freshman Frank Lomas put up a fight 

early against No. 8 ranked Anthony Robles, 

but the Sun Devil was able to put Lomas on 

his back, earning a pin victory for ASU at 

125. 

Keeping the Sun Devils from claiming consecutive 

wins, Thomas Kimbrell scored early 

and often in a 17-4 major decision over Angel 

Alegre at 133. Arizona State’s No. 5 ranked 

Chris Drouin closed things out with a fall victory 

over Anthony Box at 141.

CSUB 24, CAL POLY 10 

SAN LUIS OBIPSO, Calif. — The CSUB wrestling 

team moved to a perfect 4-0 in Pac-10 

duals Friday, claiming a 24-10 win over Cal 

Poly at Mott Gym. 

The Roadrunners won seven matches, including 

the first three and the final four on their 

way to the 14-point win. 

David Morgan and Frank Lomas, both filling 

in for normal starters Mitch Monteiro and 

Brandon Zoetewey, started the night off with 

back-to-back decisions at heavyweight and 

125 to give CSUB an early 6-0 lead. Thomas 

Kimbrell followed with a 12-2 major decision 

over the Mustangs Jake Tanenbaum at 133 to 

put the ‘Runners up 10-0. 

The heart of Cal Poly’s lineup then put 

together three consecutive wins at 141, 149 

and 157 to knot the score, 10-10. 

CSUB’s Elijah Nacita went toe-to-toe with No. 

17 nationally ranked Filip Novachkov, but 

in an effort to break a scoreless tie, Nacita 

gave up an escape with 26 seconds remaining 

and was unable to score down the stretch 

for a 1-0 loss. Cal Poly’s Eric Maldonado then 

majored Calvin Miller 7-5 and No. 9 nationally 

ranked Chase Pami topped Trevor Hall 6-2. 

After giving up the three wins, Bakersfield’s 

final four wrestlers took care of business with 

a pair of decisions and a pair of major decisions. 

Joey Granata defeated Joel Shaw, 6-1 

at 165 and Jason Points earned a 13-0 major 

decision win over Tyler Holt at 174. 

Wrestling for the first time this season at 

184, Riley Orozco claimed a 15-4 major decision 

over Evan Barbre and Ernesto Ancona 

wrapped things up with a 5-3 decision over 

Bo Lukehart at 197.

STANFORD, Calif. — CSUB opened competition 

at the Stanford Duals with a 33-9 win over 

Drexel. 

The Roadrunners won eight of 10 bouts 

against the Dragons, including a pair of falls 

by Calvin Miller at 149 and Joey Granata 

at 165. Granata’s pin of the Dragons’ Scott 

Hunter was his team-leading eighth of the 

season. The CSUB junior has been perfect in 

matches by fall this season, 8-0. 

Frank Lomas, Elijah Nactia and Trevor Hall 

claimed shutout major decisions at 125, 141 

and 157, respectively, for three more ‘Runner 

wins. Thomas Kimbrell earned an 8-4 decision 

over Frank Cimato at 133, Jason Points 

won 6-0 over Brian Stouffer at 174 and Riley 

Orozco topped Justin Wieller, 5-0, at 184. 

Drexel won the final two weights, with No. 

11 nationally ranked Jon Oplinger pinning 

Ernesto Ancona in 3:19 at 197 and Kyle Frey 

earning a 7-6 decision over David Morgan at 

heavyweight.

STANFORD, Calif. — CSUB concluded action 

at the Stanford Duals with a convincing 

26-15 win over Columbia. The win was the 

Roadrunners’ sixth consecutive dual victory 

and moved their season record to 7-3. 

The ‘Runners won six of 10 matches, beginning 

with Thomas Kimbrell’s 13-8 decision 

over Andrew Grabfelder at 133. Elijah Nacita 

followed with a 14-1 major decision over 

Shane Strumwasser at 141 and Calvin Miller 

recorded his second pin of the day, this time 

over Nick Standish. 

The Lions’ Derek Sickles picked up a 9-6 decision 

over Trevor Hall at 157, but CSUB put 

the dual away with a Joey Granata decision at 

165, a forfeit win at 174 and a Riley Orozco 

major decision at 184. 

Columbia would go on to win the final two 

bouts, a fall victory by Ryan Sutherland at 

197 and an 8-3 decision by Ryan Flores at 

heavyweight.

BOISE, Idaho — Leading 12-8 midway 

through the dual against No. 10 nationally 

ranked Boise State, CSUB suffered losses in 

the final five bouts of the evening, falling 

26-12 to the Broncos at Taco Bell Arena. 

The Roadrunners entered the Pac-10 match-up 

riding a six-dual win streak, but fell to 7-4 on 

the season and 4-1 in conference action. 

A meet that featured nine total top-25 ranked 

wrestlers opened with No. 5 Brent Chriswell 

and No. 8 Brandon Halsey at 197. Chriswell 

led 4-2 after the opening period, scoring a 

pair of takedowns, while Halsey earned two 

escapes. Halsey chose down to start the second 

period, and cut his deficit to one with 

a quick escape, but he was unable to score 

again and Chriswell added an escape in the 

third for a 5-3 win. 

Bakersfield’s No. 9 ranked Mitch Monteiro 

put his team ahead 5-3 with a dominating 

18-1 technical fall victory over Sam Zylstra 

at heavyweight. No. 15 Brandon Zoetewey 

increased the Roadrunner lead to 8-3 with 

a tight 2-0 win over Boise’s Alan Bartelli at 

125. 

At 133, CSUB’s Thomas Kimbrell scored a 

quick takedown five seconds into the match, 

but those would be the only points the senior 

would manage as No. 4 Andrew Hochstrasser 

reeled off 17 consecutive points for the technical 

fall win. 

Elijah Nacita pushed the CSUB lead to 12-8 

with an 8-0 major decision over Cory Fish at 

141, but it was all Boise State from there as 

the home team claimed wins in the final five 

matches.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — CSUB dominated start 

to finish in a 34-7 pounding of Pac-10 rival 

UC Davis. 

Trevor Hall started the night off with an 18-6 

major decision over the Aggies’ Joey Wilson 

at 157. Wilson scored a takedown early to go 

up 2-0, but Hall responded with two escapes, 

a takedown and a pair of two-point nearfalls 

in the first period to hold an 8-4 advantage. 

Hall stretched his lead to 12-6 after two 

periods, then scored a takedown, three-point 

nearfall and riding time in the third. 

Davis’ Dustin Noack cut the CSUB lead to 

4-3 with a 9-6 decision over Joey Granata at 

165, but Jason Points stretched the ‘Runner 

lead back to four with a 10-5 decision over 

Tyler Bernacchi at 174. Bernacchi entered the 

match ranked No. 1 in the latest Pac-10 poll, 

while Points was listed at No. 3. 

At 184, CSUB’s Riley Orozco improved to 4-1 

since moving down a weight class, claiming 

a 9-2 decision over John Clark. Orozco took a 

4-1 lead in the first period on a pair of takedowns, 

and only allowed Clark one more point 

in the final four minutes of action. 

Brandon Halsey, currently ranked No. 7 in 

the USA Today/Intermat/NWCA poll, pushed 

the ‘Runner lead to 16-3 with a forfeit victory 

at 197. No. 8 ranked Mitch Monteiro followed 

with a 10-2 major decision over John 

Thurston at heavyweight and No. 15 ranked 

Brandon Zoetewey earned a 16-0 technical fall 

over Chris Armendariz. 

Thomas Kimbrell won by forfeit at 133, 

extending the Roadrunner cushion to 31-3 

and Elijah Nacita claimed a 10-4 decision over 

Nexi Delgado at 141. 

The Aggies were able to close out the night 

with a win at 149 as Barrett Abel earned an 

11-0 major decision over CSUB’s Calvin Miller.

OREGON STATE 28, CSUB 16 

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Wins by Elijah Nacita, 

Mitch Monteiro and Brandon Zoetewey were 

not enough as CSUB fell 28-16 to visiting 

Oregon State. 

Nacita started the dual with a quick fall victory 

at 141. Oregon State’s Garrett Drucker 

scored a takedown 30 seconds in, but Nacita 

escaped moments later to trail 2-1. Then, 

with 11 seconds remaining in the first period, 

Nacita spun quickly on Drucker, putting the 

Beaver redshirt freshman on his back to earn 

the six-point fall win. 

Oregon State dominated the ensuing six 

bouts, however, beginning with a Heinrich 

Barnes 15-0 win over CSUB’s Anthony Box at 

149. Heinrich, ranked No. 16 nationally, used 

an eight-point second period to build a 13-0 

lead over Box, then scored a reversal with 

1:16 remaining to cut the bout short with the 

15-0 advantage. 

Down 25-6, the Roadrunners were able to get 

back on track late in the dual, winning two 

of the final three bouts. At heavyweight, No. 

6 ranked Mitch Monteiro took down Brandon 

Perkins 30 seconds in, then rolled the Beaver 

onto his back for a fall victory at 2:14. 

No. 16 ranked Brandon Zoetewey improved 

to 21-5 with a 9-0 win over Jake Gonzales at 

125. The San Ramon native scored just three 

points in the first two periods, but picked up 

the action in the third, scoring on a takedown, 

a three-point nearfall and riding time 

for the shutout major decision.
