‘RUNNER REPORT: The ‘Runners traveled to San Francisco Friday for the 33rd Annual<br />

California Collegiates, where seven members <strong>of</strong> the squad placed in the top four. Brandon<br />

Zoetewey (San Ramon, Calif./De La Salle HS) earned the individual title at 125, while<br />

Frank Lomas (Bakersfield HS), Ernesto Ancona (Sunnyvale, Calif./Fremont HS) and Riley<br />

Orozco (Churchill County HS) all earned second place finishes. Meanwhile, Joey Granata<br />

(Oceanside, Calif/Fallbrook HS), who placed third, also won the Coach Haddad Award for<br />

most pins (5) in the tournament. On Saturday, CSUB hosted Oregon State in Pac-10 dual,<br />

falling 28-16. Zoetewey, Elijah Nactia (Bakersfield HS) and Mitch Monteiro (Paso Robles,<br />

Calif./Cuesta College) picked up wins for the shorthanded ‘Runners. Trevor Hall (Battle<br />

Ground HS) was held out <strong>of</strong> competition due to injury and Brandon Halsey (Vista, Calif./<br />

Fresno State) was also unavailable for action.<br />

STAT LEADERS: Sophomore Elijah Nacita leads the ‘Runners with 28 wins so far this season,<br />

followed by Brandon Zoetewey, Thomas Kimbrell (Dawsonville, Ga./Dawson County HS),<br />

Mitch Montiero with 21. Brandon Halsey holds the best win percentage (.857) with a 12-2<br />

overall record, while Joey Granata leads the way with 13 pins.<br />

RANKED ‘RUNNERS: For the first time ever, the NCAA has released a “Coaches Panel Ranking,”<br />

which will ultimately be one <strong>of</strong> the tools used as part <strong>of</strong> the selection process to determine<br />

the qualifiers for the 2009 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships. The first <strong>of</strong> three polls,<br />

with results through Jan. 18, lists six ‘Runners in the top 33. Those wrestlers include No. 19<br />

Brandon Zoetewey, No. 25 Thomas Kimbrell, No. 28 Elijah Nacita, No. 25 Riley Orozco,<br />

No. 6 Brandon Halsey and No. 7 Mitch Monteiro.<br />

ADDITIONAL POLLS: In the most recent USA Today/InterMat/NWCA poll (Feb. 3), Brandon<br />

Zoetewey remains No. 16, while Brandon Halsey is No. 7 and Mitch Monteiro is No. 6.<br />

Three ‘Runners appear in the latest W.I.N. Magazine national poll (Feb. 2). Zoetewey is<br />

No. 20, Halsey is No. 7 and Monteiro is No. 6.<br />

Halsey (No. 7) and Monteiro (No. 6) are also all ranked by Amateur Wrestling News (Feb.<br />

2).<br />

Six also appear in the individual rankings released Feb. 3 by Wrestlingreport.com.<br />

Zoetewey comes in at No. 20, Thomas Kimbrell is No. 27, Nacita is No. 27, Orozco is No. 31,<br />

Halsey is No. 4 and Monteiro is No. 7.<br />

PAC-10 RANKINGS: One ‘Runner remain listed in the No. 1 position in his respective weight<br />

class in the most recent Pac-10 rankings. Mitch Monteiro topped the list heavyweight, while<br />

Elijah Nacita (141) and Brandon Halsey (197) both come in at No. 2. Brandon Zoetewey<br />

(125), Thomas Kimbrell (133) and Jason Points (Bakersfield, Calif./San Diego State)<br />

(174) are all listed at No. 3, while Trevor Hall (157) and Joey Granata (165) come in at<br />

No. 4.<br />

CRACKING THE TOP 50: Brandon Zoetewey has broken into the CSUB record book, currently<br />

tied for No. 45 in career wins (69). Zoetewey entered his senior season with 48 victories and<br />

has 21 so far this season. He has two remaining dual matches on the 2008-09 schedule, along<br />

with the Pac-10 Championships and NCAA Championships.<br />

TOURNEY TITLE TIMES TWO: Brandon Halsey claimed his second individual title <strong>of</strong> the season<br />

Dec. 30 at the 2008 UNCG Southern Scuffle. His first title <strong>of</strong> the season came on Dec. 18<br />

at the Reno Tournament <strong>of</strong> Champions. Seeded No. 2 in Greensboro, Halsey knocked <strong>of</strong>f No. 9<br />

Eric Chine (Kent State), No. 6 Brent Jones (Virginia) and No. 1 Cayle Byers (George Mason).<br />

EIGHT STRAIGHT: Elijah Nacita may have dropped his opening-round match at the Reno<br />

Tournament <strong>of</strong> Champions, but the sophomore followed the disappointing performance with<br />

eight consecutive victories to place third in the 141 bracket. He won three bouts by fall,<br />

including a pin in just 48 seconds, four others by decision and one 16-2 major decision.<br />

FASTEST FALL: Sam Barnhart (Barstow HS) (149) holds the fastest fall by any ‘Runner so<br />

far this season. The sophomore pinned Douglas College’s Raj Rai in 25 seconds at the Menlo
