2008-09 ROADRUNNER <strong>WRESTLING</strong> DUAL MEET RESULTS<br />

CSUB 26, COLUMBIA 15<br />

STANFORD, Calif. — CSUB concluded action<br />

at the Stanford Duals with a convincing<br />

26-15 win over Columbia. The win was the<br />

Roadrunners’ sixth consecutive dual victory<br />

and moved their season record to 7-3.<br />

The ‘Runners won six <strong>of</strong> 10 matches, beginning<br />

with Thomas Kimbrell’s 13-8 decision<br />

over Andrew Grabfelder at 133. Elijah Nacita<br />

followed with a 14-1 major decision over<br />

Shane Strumwasser at 141 and Calvin Miller<br />

recorded his second pin <strong>of</strong> the day, this time<br />

over Nick Standish.<br />

The Lions’ Derek Sickles picked up a 9-6 decision<br />

over Trevor Hall at 157, but CSUB put<br />

the dual away with a Joey Granata decision at<br />

165, a forfeit win at 174 and a Riley Orozco<br />

major decision at 184.<br />

Columbia would go on to win the final two<br />

bouts, a fall victory by Ryan Sutherland at<br />

197 and an 8-3 decision by Ryan Flores at<br />

heavyweight.<br />

No. 10 BOISE STATE 26, CSUB 12<br />

BOISE, <strong>Idaho</strong> — Leading 12-8 midway<br />

through the dual against No. 10 nationally<br />

ranked Boise State, CSUB suffered losses in<br />

the final five bouts <strong>of</strong> the evening, falling<br />

26-12 to the Broncos at Taco Bell Arena.<br />

The Roadrunners entered the Pac-10 match-up<br />

riding a six-dual win streak, but fell to 7-4 on<br />

the season and 4-1 in conference action.<br />

A meet that featured nine total top-25 ranked<br />

wrestlers opened with No. 5 Brent Chriswell<br />

and No. 8 Brandon Halsey at 197. Chriswell<br />

led 4-2 after the opening period, scoring a<br />

pair <strong>of</strong> takedowns, while Halsey earned two<br />

escapes. Halsey chose down to start the second<br />

period, and cut his deficit to one with<br />

a quick escape, but he was unable to score<br />

again and Chriswell added an escape in the<br />

third for a 5-3 win.<br />

Bakersfield’s No. 9 ranked Mitch Monteiro<br />

put his team ahead 5-3 with a dominating<br />

18-1 technical fall victory over Sam Zylstra<br />

at heavyweight. No. 15 Brandon Zoetewey<br />

increased the Roadrunner lead to 8-3 with<br />

a tight 2-0 win over Boise’s Alan Bartelli at<br />

125.<br />

At 133, CSUB’s Thomas Kimbrell scored a<br />

quick takedown five seconds into the match,<br />

but those would be the only points the senior<br />

would manage as No. 4 Andrew Hochstrasser<br />

reeled <strong>of</strong>f 17 consecutive points for the technical<br />

fall win.<br />

Elijah Nacita pushed the CSUB lead to 12-8<br />

with an 8-0 major decision over Cory Fish at<br />

141, but it was all Boise State from there as<br />

the home team claimed wins in the final five<br />

matches.<br />

CSUB 34, UC DAVIS 7<br />

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — CSUB dominated start<br />

to finish in a 34-7 pounding <strong>of</strong> Pac-10 rival<br />

UC Davis.<br />

Trevor Hall started the night <strong>of</strong>f with an 18-6<br />

major decision over the Aggies’ Joey Wilson<br />

at 157. Wilson scored a takedown early to go<br />

up 2-0, but Hall responded with two escapes,<br />

a takedown and a pair <strong>of</strong> two-point nearfalls<br />

in the first period to hold an 8-4 advantage.<br />

Hall stretched his lead to 12-6 after two<br />

periods, then scored a takedown, three-point<br />

nearfall and riding time in the third.<br />

Davis’ Dustin Noack cut the CSUB lead to<br />

4-3 with a 9-6 decision over Joey Granata at<br />

165, but Jason Points stretched the ‘Runner<br />

lead back to four with a 10-5 decision over<br />

Tyler Bernacchi at 174. Bernacchi entered the<br />

match ranked No. 1 in the latest Pac-10 poll,<br />

while Points was listed at No. 3.<br />

At 184, CSUB’s Riley Orozco improved to 4-1<br />

since moving down a weight class, claiming<br />

a 9-2 decision over John Clark. Orozco took a<br />

4-1 lead in the first period on a pair <strong>of</strong> takedowns,<br />

and only allowed Clark one more point<br />

in the final four minutes <strong>of</strong> action.<br />

Brandon Halsey, currently ranked No. 7 in<br />

the USA Today/Intermat/NWCA poll, pushed<br />

the ‘Runner lead to 16-3 with a forfeit victory<br />

at 197. No. 8 ranked Mitch Monteiro followed<br />

with a 10-2 major decision over John<br />

Thurston at heavyweight and No. 15 ranked<br />

Brandon Zoetewey earned a 16-0 technical fall<br />

over Chris Armendariz.<br />

Thomas Kimbrell won by forfeit at 133,<br />

extending the Roadrunner cushion to 31-3<br />

and Elijah Nacita claimed a 10-4 decision over<br />

Nexi Delgado at 141.<br />

The Aggies were able to close out the night<br />

with a win at 149 as Barrett Abel earned an<br />

11-0 major decision over CSUB’s Calvin Miller.<br />
