International Student Support Service (ISSS) provides support for all AUT international students and specialised knowledge on: π Faculty liaison π Advice on living in Auckland π Visas on campus π Events, fun activities, making friends π Community networking π Immigration Advice π International Orientation (the week before the start of semester – further details are given with your Offer of Place) making the most of your semester <strong>abroad</strong> A Study Abroad semester is about immersing yourself in the learning, language and culture of another country. It can be one of the most rewarding and enriching times of your life and at AUT you are ideally placed to be able to make the very most of the opportunities offered to you. For a start, the largest and most culturally diverse city in New Zealand is right at your doorstep so get out and explore Auckland before venturing further afield! This is easily done on foot or by catching an inner city bus. Experience one of the many cultural festivals which Auckland hosts throughout the year, take in a Polynesian market day, check out the music and sports calendar for world class entertainment. Also look out for the AUSM (AUT Student Movement) CONNECT bus trips to various point of interest in the greater Auckland area. From Auckland, the rest of New Zealand is readily accessible and offers a huge diversity of landscape and experiences. There are several tour companies catering specifically for student travel, who can help to make this happen. You will find out more at Orientation. The Study Abroad Welcome Party usually takes place in the second week of the semester and is an excellent opportunity to meet students from around the world. Connections are made, friendships are formed, trips are planned, and sometimes even flatmates are found. A fun evening as well! Picture courtesy of Tourism Auckland The Noho Marae Weekend is an event unique to AUT and a highlight for many. At the beginning of semester you have the opportunity to stay on the AUT Marae (meeting house) for two nights and experience communal living. Over the course of the weekend you will meet Màori students and their families, learn Màori crafts and performing arts (including the haka) and participate in a traditional Màori feast. Students make lifelong friends from all nationalities and experience Màori culture in a very real way. All new international students to AUT are invited to attend. 8
