Total Bridges District 2 – 1,848
KYTC has trained bridge inspectors in each
of the 12 districts across the state.
Each person’s job is Bridge Inspection only.
Bridge Technicians have a 5 year training
period shadowing an approved technician
before they can inspect on their own.
What is a bridge?
A structure with a span of more than 20
feet.
Each bridge is inspected on a two year cycle
and a detailed analysis is recorded after
each inspection in a statewide database
(pontis).
The bridge inspector will review past
inspections to compare the previous
conditions to present conditions.
Bridges determined to be substandard, are
placed in a yearly inspection cycle and are
reviewed each year or more often if
needed.
If a bridge continues to deteriorate, what
happens next, closure?
Obviously, we do not want to close a bridge,
therefore the next steps would be to
reduce the weight limit.
