Annual Biomedical Research C<strong>on</strong>ference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)<br />

The Annual Biomedical Research C<strong>on</strong>ference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) is a nati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ference designed to encourage undergraduate students to pursue advanced training and careers in<br />

the biomedical sciences. It is also an opportunity for students who have c<strong>on</strong>ducted research in<br />

biomedical sciences to share their research project data and dem<strong>on</strong>strate scientific knowledge.<br />

ABRCMS <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

November 4-7, <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Phoenix, Ariz<strong>on</strong>a<br />

All MARC students are required to attend and present at the ABRCMS meeting.<br />

Eligibility – Any student who has c<strong>on</strong>ducted biomedical research may submit an abstract to<br />

the c<strong>on</strong>ference. The <strong>on</strong>ly excepti<strong>on</strong> is undergraduate students in their freshman year.<br />

Review Criteria<br />

1. A minimum of two authors<br />

All abstracts must list at least two authors.<br />

The student must be the first and presenting author.<br />

The research mentor must be the sec<strong>on</strong>d author.<br />

(Any abstract with <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e author will be rejected).<br />

2. Dem<strong>on</strong>strati<strong>on</strong> of a scientific problem<br />

The abstract must c<strong>on</strong>tain a hypothesis or statement about the problem under investigati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

The abstract must c<strong>on</strong>tain a brief statement of the experimental methods used.<br />

The essential results must be present in summary form (even if preliminary). Do not state, for<br />

example, “results will be discussed.”<br />

The abstract must c<strong>on</strong>tain a c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong><br />

(Research proposals are not acceptable).<br />

3. Quality of written c<strong>on</strong>tent of the abstract<br />

Abstracts that show lack of care or quality of c<strong>on</strong>trol as evidenced by grammatical,<br />

punctuati<strong>on</strong>, spelling, and typographical errors are reviewed less favorably.<br />

Abstract Submissi<strong>on</strong><br />

The <strong>on</strong>ly method of submissi<strong>on</strong> is through the Web-based abstract submissi<strong>on</strong> system located<br />

at the ABRCMS website at http://www.abrcms.org. All submissi<strong>on</strong>s must be received by<br />

12:00 midnight Pacific Standard Time <strong>on</strong> September 8, <str<strong>on</strong>g>2009</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Late submissi<strong>on</strong>s are not<br />

accepted.<br />
