Welcome Back Elaine
A very warm welcome back to News Review News Editor and President Emeritus Elaine
Skolnik who, with this issue, resumes writing for the paper after a long illness that began during
the summer and led to several hospitalizations and rehabilitation stays. It was during
these difficult days that her husband Victor Nicholson died.
Elaine has been sorely missed. It is fitting she picks up where she left off, resuming with
the ICC update coverage (see story on page 1), an area she has researched and covered for
many decades. We are so glad to have you back!
Letters
Doubly Grateful
This truly is the season to extend
goodwill toward everyone.
Last week I discovered that
my parked car had a flat tire.
Unable to loosen the lug nuts, I
flagged down a GHI maintenance
van and Paul Hill and Chris
Dwyer not only were happy to
help me remove the flat tire but
also put on the spare.
The very next day, while
walking my dog Huck around
Greenbelt Lake, I slipped on
some ice (deceptively hidden by
newly-fallen snow) and literally
fell on my face. After getting
back on my feet, feeling grateful
that I never lost hold of Huck, I
discovered that I had cut the area
around my left eye and was
bleeding badly. I walked
quickly to the Greenbelt Fire and
Rescue Squad where a young
woman named Jennifer invited
me and Huck in. Once there I
was immediately surrounded by
several men of goodwill who
cleaned my cut, gave me an ice
pack and assured me I had not
injured myself more seriously. In
addition to Jennifer, these good
folks included Sgt. Bauer, Captains
Dennis and Ray, ERTs
Armstrong, Jenkins and Thorne
and D/C Monegal.
This holiday season I have a
black eye but also a grateful
heart to live in a community
where goodwill can be found on
any street, around any corner
any time of year.
THANKS
The Geiger family wishes to
thank friends and neighbors for
their concern, many prayers and
best wishes over the past four
months while Mary was ill. Her
passing has left us, as well as
her many friends, sad and bewildered.
The outpouring of love
for her and support for us from
the Greenbelt community and
from her colleagues and co-workers
throughout the area has been
a great comfort.
We owe a special thanks to
Delores Downs for her consolation
and guidance and to Reverend
Dan Hamlin for conducting
a beautiful celebration of Mary’s
life.
