Police Will Conduct
Sobriety Checkpoint
The Greenbelt Police Department,
in cooperation with the
Prince George’s County Municipal
Drunk Driver Reduction
Task Force, will conduct a sobriety
checkpoint on Friday, December
23 in the 6900 block of
Greenbelt Road. Drunk driving
in Maryland continues to be a
serious problem. In 2004, 239
people, roughly 37 percent of all
lives lost in fatal crashes on
Maryland’s roads, were due to
impaired driving-related causes.
Studies show that sobriety
checkpoints can reduce alcoholrelated
crashes by as much as 20
percent. Use of sobriety checkpoints
and patrols deters motorists
from driving under the influence
and results in arrests of
those who do drink and drive.
In 2004 alone, a total of 376
people were arrested for driving
while impaired during 66 sobriety
checkpoints in Maryland.
