Kangaroos bacteria fight against cancer A common bacterium from the Eastern Grey Kangaroo’s stomach could help fight deadly cancers. Griffith Institute of Health and Medical Research scientist Associate Professor Ming Wei is genetically engineering the bacterium to boost its cancer-busting power. He said the therapies developed from this world-first concept could save millions of lives each year. “One in four Australians dies from cancer and most people die from the spread of the tumour, not the primary tumour mass itself,” Associate Professor Wei said. “Conventional therapies are unable to penetrate solid tumour mass thus having a low success rate.” Associate Professor Wei said the bacteria found in the stomach of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo was similar to that found in humans, but contained more protein-digesting enzymes. The modified bacterium will be capable of targeting primary tumour masses as well as secondary tumours. “The kangaroo bacterium, injected into blood, will be able to colonise tumours with its innate ability, release special enzymes which liquefy the cancer mass, shrinking it and stimulating the body’s natural immune system. “An anaerobic bacterium doesn’t need oxygen to multiply and can multiply much faster than the tumour cells, effectively starving the tumour of the ‘food’ it needs to grow.” The theory was tested on tumours in rats, with a 30 to 45 per cent success rate and clinical trials are expected to start in two years.
