Welcome to the Summer 2011 issue of Go Torque – Trade News Direct.
Insert David’s message here.
As the first decade of the new millennium draws to a close we will be
entering 2011 with some fantastic new products which will see Holden
continuing as an Australian icon for many years to come.
We highlight the new Series II Commodore and all new Barina Spark.
In particular the new technology features in both cars. We have come a
long way from the days when I remember Dad bringing home his new
Holden back in the early 80’s. It had an aerial that when up and down by
itself and speakers in the back, (which seemed amazing at the time) a far
cry from the Holden IQ system you’ll find in the Series II Commodore.
Our Holden legend this issue is the Statesman which after almost 40
years is retiring, we take a look back at the extraordinary journey that
these great cars have taken, from the very first HQ Statesman, to the
final WM.
Holden Engine Operations in Melbourne produce V6 engines with
cutting edge technology which are shipped all over the world, we explore
the process of building them.
The Holden Trade Club continues to grow and we are pleased to
introduce ACDelco batteries to a growing list of parts available through
the program, see pages 18-19 for more details.
Holden Restoration Parts takes a look at Tony Cott’s Toranas and finds
out why he loves the cars so much. We also head over to Western
Australia to chat with the guys involved with Beat the Heat – WA, the
program which promotes legal off street drag racing.
Also featured is one of the craziest motorbikes you have ever seen. The
bike is powered by a 540ci Big Block GM Performance engine. We also
take a look at an exciting new racing class in Speedway that utilizes 2nd
hand Holden engines to create an affordable and entertaining racing
division.
Don’t forget to check out page 33 to see who the lucky winner of the
Snap-On Prize Pack. I’m sure you’ll agree that we found a very deserving
winner.
If all this isn’t enough, we are giving away 100 copies of the ACDelco
2011 Calendar to the first 100 people to email in. Check out page 34
for more information.
The team hope you enjoy reading this issue of Go Torque over the
Holiday season and wish you, and your families a safe and happy
Christmas.
Series II
All New Series II Commodore.
Improved Fuel Economy and reduced CO2 emissions.
Revised Aerolip
Boot Lid.
Revised Grill,
Front Bumper &
Headlamps
Air Deflectors
Under Body Panels
Modified Undertray
Holden has introduced the VE and WM Series II, the latest versions of
Australia’s most popular sedans, wagons, utilities and luxury longwheelbase
vehicles.
With the new range, Holden has finessed the formula that has made
Commodore the nation’s top selling car for 14 years straight, introducing
smart multimedia technology, improved fuel economy and the capacity to run
on environmentally friendly bio-ethanol.
VE Series II brings more multimedia features to the Commodore range
than ever before through an all-new infotainment system that delivers full
Bluetooth®, USB, iPod® and MP3 player integration across the range.
Known as Holden-iQ, the system is controlled through a clever, user-friendly
touch screen mounted in the centre stack - the cornerstone of a refreshed
interior across all models.
Commodore’s smart technology extends to the Series II powertrain line-up
which delivers further fuel economy improvements on all models. Holden’s
frugal 3.0-litre SIDI V6 now achieves economy of 9.1 litres of fuel per 100
kilometres in the official ADR81/02 test. The 2 per cent improvement adds
to the 12 per cent fuel economy gain made in September last year when
Spark Ignition Direct Injection (SIDI) engine technology was introduced to the
Commodore range.
The 3.6 litre SIDI V6 used to power premium Commodore models makes
average fuel economy gains of more than 3 per cent while all luxury and
performance models powered by Holden’s Gen IV V8 improve on average by
more than 6 per cent. The fuel economy improvements also result in reduced
emissions across the range with all V6 models now achieving a four-star
rating in the Federal Government’s Green Vehicle Guide.
In a major step towards creating a cleaner Australian fuel landscape, Series
II introduces flex-fuel technology which enables customers to run selected
models on Bio-ethanol, known in many markets as E85; a blend of up to 85
per cent ethanol and 15 per cent petrol. In Australia today, use of the fuel
reduces lifecycle CO2 emissions by up to 40 per cent when compared to
petrol.
A first for an Australian-made car, Series II models powered by the 3.0 litre
SIDI V6 and 6.0 litre V8 engines will feature this flex-fuel capability, allowing
them to run on Bio-ethanol, E10, Unleaded, Premium or any combination in
between.
Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mike Devereux, said Series II, which
also receives a range of exterior design enhancements, reflected Holden’s
focus on continuous improvements for Commodore.
“Our approach to Commodore has been about making a great car even better,”
Mr Devereux said.
“Our customers have been telling us they want to see our models refreshed
with greater functionality from Omega to Caprice. We have listened and
responded in a way that continues to position Commodore as the smart choice
for Australian motorists.”
Mr Devereux said the introduction of flex-fuel capability to Series II vehicles
highlighted Holden’s commitment to making motoring better for the
environment through leadership with alternative fuels.
“We have placed an enormous emphasis on developing technology that can
be used in today’s vehicles to make driving better for the environment. That
has included leading the way for Australian produced cars with Bio-ethanol,
providing motorists with a cleaner fuel alternative when filling up their car.
“It is the first major step forward in our efforts to move more renewable
fuels like Bio-ethanol from a niche product into the mainstream, by making it
available on Australia’s top-selling car line.”
Holden engineers and designers working on Series II have
instituted a series of modifications to produce an average fuel
economy gain for all V6 models of 2.8 per cent and an average
fuel economy gain for all V8 models of six per cent – making a
combined average of just over four per cent across the VE and
WM Series II range.
Modifications included aerodynamic improvements, which lower fuel
consumption by reducing the vehicle’s drag co-efficient, and mechanical
changes. Omega and Berlina models were also fitted with lower rolling
resistance tyres.
Further fuel saving enhancements see the Omega Ute brought into line
with the remainder of the Commodore range, benefiting from Holden’s
economical 3.0-litre SIDI V6 engine matched with the six-speed
automatic transmission.
Commodore goes Brazillian.
Holden has announced a new, niche export program to Chevrolet
Brazil based on the VE Series II Commodore range.
The export vehicles will be sold as Chevrolet Omega in Brazil from
November this year and will be powered by Holden’s locally-built 3.6 litre
SIDI V6 engine initially capable of running on blends of up to 25 per cent
ethanol.
The niche-volume program marks the return of Holden exports to Brazil
which ran between 1998 with the VT-based Chevrolet Omega and 2008.
Holden will export 600 of the special edition Chevrolet Omega vehicles.
The model will be represented in Brazil by motor racing icon, Emerson
Fittipaldi.
Fittipaldi, a Brazilian national hero, won the Formula One world drivers’
championship in 1972 and 1974 racing for the Lotus and McLaren
teams. He later switched to racing IndyCar in the United States, winning
the famed Indianapolis 500 in 1989 and 1993 and the IndyCar drivers’
championship in 1989.
Aerodynamic improvements include:
Addition of panels under the vehicle floor to reduce airflow drag
(Sedan and Sportwagon, excluding Omega)
Reduced trim height on Omega and Berlina sedan
· Air deflectors fitted to the front of sedan rear wheels
(Omega, Berlina Calais)
· Rear bootlid re-design to include aero lip detailing (sedans)
Front undertray modified to reduce drag
·
Mechanical changes include:
Fitment of a clutched air conditioning compressor, which does not
pump when the air conditioning system is turned off
Engine idle speed reduction on 3.6L V6 SIDI variants
·
Engine Plant
Holden V6 - Made in Melbourne.
Much of the process has been automated but there is still a
great deal of human involvement through the whole process. The
machines are there to do all the heavy lifting, hard labour and
precision work.
Once the heads and short motor are built, they come together. The
heads are seamlessly installed by machine and the head bolts are
then simultaneously torqued to exact specifications, within +/- 0.1%.
This level of precision is just something that cannot be replicated by
hand.
The engine is now starting to look more complete. The manifolds,
fuel system and other bolt-ons are now installed. The fuel system
upgrades with the recent 2010 SIDI engines saw a new fuel system
leak test station which utilizes nitrogen and helium to ensure the
fuel system is assembled correctly. Because both these gases are
so fine, they are capable of revealing tiny imperfections that could
eventually leak fuel in the future. This multi-million dollar station is
cutting edge technology and is critical to ensuring the integrity of the
fuel system and reliability.
Above: A robot precisely applies sealant to the surfaces of the timing case cover with
precision not possible by hand.
The final stage of the assembly line sees the engine filled with oil
and then undergoes a ‘Cold Test’. This involves connecting a 50kW
dyne motor to the flywheel/flexplate and then driving the engine cold
(with no fuel). The engine is run through a 2 minute test cycle which
consists of 5 phases at various speeds from 150 – 2,000rpm.
In this article, we take a look into Holden’s High-Feature V6
(HFV6) engine plant located at Fisherman’s Bend in Port
Melbourne Victoria.
Holden has been manufacturing engines on this site since 1940,
today the HFV6 plant is where all the V6 engines found in the
latest Holden Commodores, Colorados and Captivas are built.
The plant currently builds up to 27 different engine combinations
simultaneously. Many of these engines are sent overseas to
countries as far afield as Mexico, Sweden and Brazil as part of
Holden’s engine export program. These are fitted to other vehicles in
the General Motors family.
The plant produces around 520 engines each day, working 2 shifts.
However if required, it is capable of building up to 960 engines per
day with the addition of an extra shift.
The plant is split into two separate sections – fabrication and
assembly.
Fabrication
This area handles the 3 fabrication lines which machine the main
engine components – cylinder blocks, crankshafts and cylinder
heads.
These processes take between 1.5 and 3 hours to run through the
machining lines. The ‘rough’ castings are drilled, tapped, brushed,
polished, grinded, honed, washed, hardened, balanced and leak
tested ready for assembly.
Once the components have been fabricated, they are sorted and
stockpiled in readiness to join the assembly production line to create
a complete motor.
Assembly
The assembly line, in simple terms is designed in a ‘Y’ shape, with the
heads and short motor being assembled simultaneously on different
assembly lines and then meeting to create the long motor.
Testing occurs at many points along the line, if a problem is found
with one of the cylinder heads, the matching short motor on the
other side of the production line will automatically be put into a
holding bay, allowing production to continue on the line without
disruption.
Computers track and read what parts are where on the production
line using a combination of radio data tags and casting nodes on
cylinder heads and blocks. These nodes are basically Braille for the
tracking system to read. This system ensures the right parts are
going into the right engine.
The assembly process is based upon the General Motors Global
Manufacturing System which consists of 5 key principles; People
Involvement, Standardization, Built-In-Quality, Short Lead Time and
Continuous Improvement.
The cold test engine cubicles consist of a series of pressure
transducers, vacuum and vibration sensors, accelerometers and
torque transducers which test for oil pressure, engine torque levels,
engine vibration, intake vacuum pressure, exhaust pressure, cam and
crank timing, ignition spark as well as many other engine vitals.
After the engines pass this test, they are loaded onto pallets
where they will then be shipped to Adelaide to power the latest
Commodores, or somewhere around the world.
Manufacturing Fast Fact.
When conrods are made, they are cast as single piece. To seperate and create the conrod bearing caps, they are not cut
as you may have thought. They are hydraulically split into two peices. Doing it this way creates two surfaces that perfectly
mesh when bolted together, creating a much stronger and precise join. This is one of the main reasons why you should
never swap and change conrod bearing caps between conrods.
Motorsport Section News Title
Motorsport News.
The following day TeamVodafone’s Whincup and Owen withstood
immense pressure over the closing stages to win a thrilling final leg and
maintain VE II’s unbeaten run.
Tander’s win was the 47th of his career, just one short of the late, great
Peter Brock in third on the all-time Australian Touring Car/V8 Supercar
Championship most wins list, while Whincup’s was his 42nd.
Whincup and Owen’s victory also gave Commodore its 14th race win of
the season and secured Holden the manufacturer’s title.
The V8 Supercar Championship Series is beginning to wind down
with just three events remaining on the 2010 calendar as Go Torque
was going to press – the Tasmania Challenge at Symmons Plains, the
Sandown Challenge and the Sydney 500 at Homebush.
Whincup has closed the gap to series leader James Courtney and
is within striking distance of winning his third straight V8 Supercar
Championship, while TeamVodafone is odds-on favourite to take out the
team’s title.
Holden’s recently-introduced VE Commodore Series II
has found immediate success on the race track, clean
sweeping V8 Supercar’s three endurance races –Phillip
Island, Bathurst and the Gold Coast.
VE Series II’s race-winning introduction has also secured Holden
the 2010 V8 Supercar Manufacturer’s Championship with six races
remaining in the season.
In mid-September, Holden legends Craig Lowndes and Mark Skaife
combined to take out the warm-up to Bathurst, the Phillip Island 500.
Just four weeks later, Lowndes and Skaife went on to win the year’s
biggest and most important race, the Bathurst 1000 at Mount Panorama,
leading team-mates Jamie Whincup and Steve Owen across the line in a
historic TeamVodafone Commodore one, two.
It was just the third 'one-two' in Bathurst history and the first since Peter
Brock and David Parsons crossed the line together in HDT’s ‘Last of the
Big Banger’ Commodores in 1984.
Holden dominated Bathurst with the first four finishers and eight of the
top 10 Commodores, the Toll Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander and
Cameron McConville celebrating HRT’s 20th anniversary in fine style by
claiming the final podium spot.
The win was Lowndes’ fifth Bathurst crown and Skaife’s sixth, while
Lowndes’ victory completed an incredible month where he won Phillip
Island, Bathurst and the Australian Safari.
For Holden it was its 27th win in Australia’s Great Race and the 20th
for Commodore since it made its competition debut at Mt Panorama in
1980.
In late October, the third V8 enduro, the revitalised Gold Coast 600
saw HRT’s Tander and McConville combine to take out a crash-filled,
controversial first 300km leg with Lowndes and three-time World Touring
Car Champion Andy Priaulx finishing second for TeamVodafone in yet
another Commodore one, two.
Lowndes Wins Australasian Safari.
Doorslammers in Melbourne.
If you are from Melbourne, hopefully you were lucky enough to
get along to the Top Doorslammers at Calder Park on November
20. Unfortunately the Victorians don't get to see much top level
drag racing in their home state. So this was the perfect chance
for the public to get out and see Australia's best competing at
the track.
The doorslammers always attract a huge crowd, and it was no different
at Calder Park. Although only racing over the 1/8th Mile they put on
a great show and gave many Victorians their first Top Doorslammer
experience.
For all the latest news and results on the Holden Trade Club Top
Doorslammer, check out www.fabiettiracing.com.au
V8 Supercar star Craig Lowndes has had a miraculous win in his
debut off-road event, the gruelling Australian Safari which was
held in outback Western Australia.
Lowndes and navigator Kees Weel crossed the finish line in the
Western Australian coast town of Esperance to claim victory by 1 hour
12 minutes and 44 seconds.
Driving a specially modified V8 Holden Colorado, Lowndes and Weel
dominated the Safari winning nine of the 17 competitive stages run,
covering 3,600 kilometres through the WA bush during the last seven
days.
Maximising Workshop Profitability Part 2.
Business Essentials
ACDelco Super DOT 4 brake fluid is suitable for the vast majority of vehicles on the road. 500ml is
the perfect size if you’re changing brake fluid – recommended every two years on most vehicles. As you know, brake fluid is
hygroscopic and attracts moisture, so don’t take the risk of contamination with bulk containers – buy in convenient and safe
500ml bottles. No waste, no problem.
In the last issue of Go Torque, our friends at Deloitte Motor Industry Services
discussed workshop profitability (points one to three below). In this issue
they will look at the front counter of the service department and the
important role the customer facing staff play in ensuring profit is maximised
in the workshop. - The Editor
The best run workshop will not return a profit if the front counter is not
feeding the right amount of work into the shop. Furthermore the front
counter must charge the work out to the customer and track the workshop
metrics.
Workshop profit is derived from:
1. Efficient utilisation of the labour available.
2. Management and control of the shop.
3. Efficient layout of facility.
4. Booking the correct amount of work daily.
5. Accurate and efficient costing .
6. Proper use of the time clock.
In this issue we will be exploring points four to six relating to the front
counter.
Booking the right amount of work daily
Booking the correct amount of work or workshop loading is vital; too much
and you risk quality issues resulting in customer dissatisfaction, too little and
the technicians run out of work and labour sales opportunities are lost.
Actions to consider in loading the workshop
1. Calculate the number of hours available each day.
2. Book the work by hours up to the number of hours available as
calculated above.
3. Focus the advisors on driving retail business.
4. Phone or SMS customers the day before to reduce no-shows.
5. Maximise the amount of the most profitable work for the shop.
- Scheduled services are generally more profitable than heavy
mechanical work.
Sales and Aftersales Management Training
Execute, Lead and Get Results
Sales Management Training 5 – 6 October 2010
• Managing for improvement in profit in the new
and used sales departments
• Effective leadership style employed to get the best
out of all of your people
• Business planning: where focus will be placed on
the important and not just the urgent
• Successful recruitment and retention of quality
staff and understanding
• Importance of customer satisfaction and
retention strategies
• Improve the results of your operation by
working on your own data and KPIs.
6. Use sublet to soak up variances in demand.
- When busy sublet out work.
- In slower times keep the work in house.
Live, instructor led six day courses held over three months. Each course uses your dealership data and focuses on
action plans and improvement for your dealership. The courses are suitable for current managers or future managers.
Accurate and efficient costing
When costing work for customers it is important to charge all of the time that
the technicians worked on the job. Although on the surface this sounds easy
we often see money lost through ineffective charging.
Actions that can improve the charging processes
1. Train service advisors to sell the job, do not discount to appease
customers.
2. Track Repair Orders that have labour adjustments to ensure efficiency
problems are understood.
3. Have a separate costing clerk to cost invoices.
4. Track Repair Orders that are less than 100% efficient and discuss
with technician and advisor.
5. Get the technicians to write proper stories so all work can be
charged out.
Proper use of the time clock
If you can’t measure it you can’t manage it! This is an old but true adage. The
only way to understand how efficiently the workshop is running is to use a
time clock.
1. Technicians should clock on and off every job (not just every car).
2. The data should be shared with the technicians and plans put in place
to maximise productivity and efficiency.
3. Divide your shop into teams and monitor them individually.
Check your front counter against these and see how you compare,
remember the name of the game is to keep the workshop full of high
grossing work and drive the technicians to work.
1. The Pollen Filter is located under the cover of the plenum
chamber.
2. Remove all of the fasteners that hold the top cover in place
(Tip - A flat edged trim tool is best for this job).
3. Inside you will see a leaf guard (or a pollen filter if the car has
been previously fitted with one), carefully remove and clean out any
leaves and debris from the chamber.
4. Insert the new Pollen Filter into its correct position. Then re-install
all the fasteners to secure the cover back into position.
With a little practice, replacing a filter takes less than 3 mintues.
Around 6 Million Australians today suffer from chronic respiratory
illnesses such as asthma and hay fever*. These are both
commonly brought on by airborne particles such as dust and
pollen.
This problem is exacerbated when we drive as the air inside our vehicles
has been found to have a higher concentration of pollutants than in the air
just outside the vehicle.
In older vehicles, contaminants pass unfiltered into the passenger
cabin along with the fresh air intake. Fortunately most modern vehicles,
including many Holdens can be fitted with a pollen filter, (sometimes
referred to as a cabin filter) which reduces these allergens entering
through the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
Key Benefits of Pollen Filters:
• Better air quality.
• Better passenger comfort.
• Cleaner Interior.
1
Changing an AH Astra Pollen Filter.
1. The Pollen Filter is located behind the glovebox, remove it first.
2. Locate and remove the cover as highlighted.
3. You should be able to see the pollen filter now, carefully remove
the old filter and clear out any debris. You can now replace with a
new filter and reinstall the glovebox.
This job should take less than 10 minutes.
Holden Pollen Filter Range Guide.
The pollen filter is included in the regular service schedule and needs to
be replaced at regular intervals to ensure it performs correctly. When not
changed for an extended period the filter will become clogged, choking
the airflow entering the vehicle. A severely clogged filter will lead to
reduced performance of air conditioning system and musty odours.
Pollen filters are generally located either under the bonnet or behind the
glove box. Most can be easily changed in 5-15 minutes, yet are commonly
overlooked at service time. Next time you service one of the Holdens
listed opposite ensure you replace the filter as required for the benefit of
your customer.
Your local Holden Dealer also stocks a range of ACDelco Cabin Filters
to suit many makes and models. Further details of the full range can be
found online at acdelco.com.au or contact your Holden Trade Club Dealer.
Holden Designed Cruze Hatch.
Holden Design
Genuine Quality.
Factory Fit.
Holden’s design talents are being showcased to the world with
the five-door Cruze hatchback showcar being unveiled at the
Paris Motor Show.
The highly anticipated global model was designed and built by Holden’s
Port Melbourne design studio. The showcar with its sweeping coupe
roofline and short overhangs is a precursor to a production model, also
designed by Holden that will be built in several countries, including
Australia where it will start product in late 2011.
Holden Chief Designer Richard Ferlazzo said the project had been a
significant undertaking for the studio which had spent more than 12
months working with GM designers from around the world developing
the hatch variant.
"Our brief was to create an alternative body style to the traditional sedan
that retained the same dynamic proportions that has made Cruze such a
success around the world,” Mr Ferlazzo said.
“We are very proud of the result which will be tailored further for the
Australian market and give an appearance consistent with the rest of the
Holden portfolio next year.”
All New Barina Spark.
The Holden Design Studio is an important part of General Motors global
design network, as one of only three facilities in the world with the
capability to design and build prototype concept vehicles for exhibitions
and international auto shows.
Holden’s all-new street-smart city car, the Barina Spark has made its
local debut at the Australian International Motorshow in Sydney.
The 1.2-litre hatch complements the existing Barina model range and
becomes the latest addition to Holden’s small car portfolio. It delivers sharp
sports styling backed by leading safety features standard across the range.
The striking five-door Barina Spark CD and CDX are based on GM’s latest
global design. They come equipped with sports body kit, alloy wheels, fog
lamps and rear spoiler as standard, along with high-level safety features
across the range, such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and six-airbag
occupant protection.
Both are powered by a lively 1.2 litre DOHC four-cylinder engine, teamed
with five-speed manual transmission. Fuel economy (ADR81/02) is a frugal
5.6 litres/100km making it the most economical car in the Holden range.
Restoration
Section Title
Living The Dream.
Even during times of economic downturn, the love and passion for restoring 'Classic Aussie Cars'
has continued to grow, as enthusiasts relish for that familiar rumble of classic muscle idling.
To bring your old Holden back
to original, use official Holden
Restoration Parts.
These parts are labelled to ensure
authenticity and are built to Holden
specifi cations by the most recognised
name in the Australian restoration market,
Rare Spares. They are designed to bring
your classic Holden back to A1 condition.
You can’t restore your Holden
without Holden Restoration
Parts by Rare Spares.
Enthusiasts around Australia are unrelentingly re-building, modifying and
restoring these vehicles to reignite memories of yesteryear. Working on
the car at home with dad, the family road trip or even the childhood dream
of one day owning that seemingly unattainable beauty at the end of the
street.
‘Holden Restoration Parts by Rare Spares’ was developed to help
enthusiasts continue to enjoy their classic Holdens (and future Holden
classics) for many years to come. The impressive range of products
readily available from participating Holden Dealers and Rare Spares
outlets is amazing. This helps many enthusiasts live their dream of owning
a classic Holden.
One man, who is 'living the dream', is Tony Cott, Victorian State Manager
of Ultra Tune Australia. Tony owns five cars in total; however his
undeniable favourites are the 1976 LX SS Hatchback and the 1974 LH
SL Sedan.
“The LH will never be finished, though it is completely drivable and
registered,” Tony explained. Tony has had the LH for two years and has
been restoring it the entire time. Its original, one person owner was
a woman who kept it in pretty good condition; however, Tony is now
restoring it back to factory original specifications
“They have a vast range of products for restoring a car back to original
specifications at Rare Spares, from door rubbers and headlamps right
down to the intricate finishing details like small engine bay decals. I’ve
spent so much time down at Rare Spares recently I’ve almost become part
of the furniture”
The Hatchback on the other hand is factory original on the outside but
modified underneath.
“I love the look of these cars, but I just wanted to make mine go harder
than the next guy's”
Tony is 'car mad' and is certain cars are his passion in life. The importance
of fulfilling these aspirations has always been and continues to be
extremely important to him; he not only loves the background of road cars
but also their racing history, and for this reason he has a soft spot for the
Toranas.
“It was just such a fast car in the hands of greats such as; Brocky and
Morris. I also have great respect for the HDT team under John Sheppard,”
Tony added.
“It was a long journey to finally own the Hatchback and for this reason I’ll
never get rid of it - It’ll be passed down through generations,” Tony said.
He has grown up surrounded by Holden and cars in general; his Father
worked for Holden Spare Parts and also Bob Jane - so he was exposed
to all there was to know about Holden from a very young age. He recalls
going along to his father’s work Christmas parties held at Calder Park,
where the Holden Dealer Team would take everyone for a ride around the
track in the A9Xs, which Tony explains was an 'absolute hoot'.
Having grown up during the era of Brocky racing the LH and LX Toranas
he reminisces. “I just love the shape of the hatch, I always wanted an
orange one in deference to Bob Jane's racing colours, but in the end I
found this one, which only had 80,000 kms on the clock when I bought it!”
Tony has recently also come to think that he owns a fairly rare car, as he is
yet to have seen another factory SS hatch in this Persian Sand colour.
“I cop some stick about the colour but I still love the car, I’m very glad that I
haven’t resprayed it orange after all,” Tony revealed.
Cars are not only a passion for Tony; it’s very much a lifestyle. Apart from
being a Holden enthusiast, Tony is also the President of the Victorian
Torana Car Club, helping build a strong foundation for the club, in addition
he is also a fully trained and qualified motor mechanic.
Tony takes both of his classic Holden’s out as much as possible and they
are constantly on display at car shows, such as; the Australian Classic Car
Show in Flemington, the Hanging Rock Car Show, the Aussie Car Show
at Sandown Racecourse and even Brocky’s Big Day Out. Tony has had his
hatchback for an impressive 17 years, so it’s been a part of many events.
With a few new projects on the horizon, he’s always excited about his next
venture.
The cars Tony currently owns come with great pride, as they were the
vehicles he strived for.
“The cars of my younger days that I really wanted – they’re an exciting car,
you need to concentrate to drive it, not like modern cars. - I’m a Holden
man through and through.” It seems Tony’s car loving has even rubbed
off onto his five year-old daughter, who claims the LH as her own car – it
looks like with the support of the newly released ‘Holden Restoration
Parts by Rare Spares’ program, Tony will be holding onto to that one for his
daughter for many years to come.
ACDelco Batteries Now in Trade Club.
ACDelco automotive batteries are among the biggest selling aftermarket
batteries in Australia. And it’s no surprise: these are premium quality, fully
warranted units. The prices are truly competitive, and now they’re available
from your local Holden Trade Club Dealer.
The range of 23 batteries covers small-pole Japanese applications through
to the largest 4x4’s – in fact, most makes and models that you’re likely to see
in your workshop.
ACDelco batteries are a great choice for your workshop and customers,
here are just a few reasons why.
6
1 2
5
Cold Cranking Amps (CCA)
Cold cranking amps is the discharge current emitted by a battery; in simple terms,
it’s the amount of ‘grunt’ provided to start the engine.
Comparing cold cranking amps can be useful when deciding which battery offers
the best value for money. When you’re looking at batteries from different suppliers
it’s important to ensure that you compare like with like.
You’ll find CCA numbers for the ACDelco range in the table opposite and printed
on the battery label.
3
Extended battery life
ACDelco batteries feature lead/calcium expanded grids which extend battery life
thanks to enhanced resistance to corrosion, overcharging, gassing, water usage,
self discharge and thermal runaway.
Increased shelf life
Batteries are usually a distress purchase so having charged stock on the shelf,
that’s ready to be fitted, means you won’t lose the sale. Compared to conventional
batteries you’ll enjoy longer shelf life – up to 12 months – without charging, due
to the use of lead/calcium grids in ACDelco batteries.
Fit and forget
ACDelco batteries are truly maintenance-free. Factory sealed cases manufactured
from strong, durable polypropylene combine light weight with high impact strength.
The reinforced design supports the battery elements to give excellent resistance to
road shock and vibration.
Applications
You’ll find comprehensive application data in the ACDelco battery catalogue
or online at acdelco.com.au. If you don’t have Internet access, here are five
simple checks to help identify the correct battery.
1. Battery case size
Check that the case
size is similar – a small
variation should not be
a problem. Usually the
most critical dimension
is the case height.
2. Terminal layout
3. Battery hold down
Is the battery hold down clamp
height and position suitable?
4. Ensure that you will have
sufficient power
Identify the battery with equivalent or
next higher rating in amp/hrs. Ensure
that the CCA (cold cranking amps)
figures are comparable.
5. Finally
Install the battery and ensure a secure fit. Please also refer to the specification table
which contains detailed information for all ACDelco batteries in the program.
When you think about big-block Chevs, the first thing that usually springs to
mind will be a drag car or an American muscle car, The majority of people
wouldn’t normally associate them with motorbikes. Well a company in the
US thought it’d be a novel idea to start wrapping motorbike frames around
GM Performance V8s (Small block 350s, LS2s, the Corvette LS3s as well as
ZZ502 big blocks) and then engineering them to be driven on public roads.
The big block bikes are now no longer being made and with only 600 ever
built this makes them a very unique item.
This amazing bike featured is owned by Mark Oliver. Mark took ownership of the bike
in raw form in early 2010 when it arrived from the U.S. Work then got underway to
comply the bike with local ADRs so it could be fully registered on Australian roads. In
March 2010 the bike hit the road in all its glory.
The end result is a fully legal and registered 540ci (9000cc) Boss Hoss. There is
almost 600 horsepower and 640 foot pounds of torque turning the rear wheel. The
final package is mind-blowing considering there is only 630kg keeping it on the road.
There are 4 other ZZ502 big-block bikes in Australia, but this is the only 540ci
unit on our shores. Mark tells us that this bike seems to have its own gravitational
pull, wherever he goes people flock to it and love asking him questions. They are
genuinely interested in learning more about the bike and are often overwhelmed
when they find out the real specs.
A funny story that Mark likes to tell is when he had the bike at a show and was
approached by a keen punter. The bloke was a postie by day and had worked out
that the motor in Marks bike was a whopping 83 times bigger than the engine in
your run-of-the-mill postie bike. Can you imagine if Australia Post let a few of their
posties onto a bike like Marks? It’d bring a whole new meaning to ‘Express Post’.
next to you at the lights would feel like?
> The price you will pay, Trade Club price
> A fair price to charge, Holden List price
> Your profit, before you fit a part
Well, in Western Australia, this can be a reality thanks to the Beat
the Heat (WA) program. Keen racers can legally race head to
head against a police car without the fear of losing their licence
or endangering lives on the road.
Formed in 2005, Beat the Heat is a 100% community based anti-street
racing program which relies solely on donations and sponsorship from
businesses and the community to operate.
In 2006, Holden donated a 2004 GTO Pontiac to the cause (Code
named - Tango 2), which has laid down over 350 consistent passes
with only the oils and filters being changed every 5 meetings. In current
specs, Tango 2 has run a PB of 12.24 down the quarter, but with a new
camshaft arriving shortly from the US, the team is aiming to bring the
car into the mid 11 second bracket. Currently the engine internals are
essentially stock, with only bolt on modifications and a tune needed to
supply 305 rear wheel horsepower running on PULP.
The main priority of Beat the Heat is not just the drag racing at the track,
it was formed to teach awareness and responsibility to help reduce
the incidents of illegal street racing on Western Australian roads. The
Beat the Heat crew visits schools, car shows and various fundraisers
to help inform people about the dangers of illegal street racing and to
promote participation in the sport of drag racing in a safe and controlled
environment.
For more information on the Beat the Heat WA program, jump on their
website at - BeatTheHeatWA.org.au
Beat the Heat have another Holden in their stables, a 1997 VT HSV
Manta code named Tango 1 which was donated by Holden back in
2003. The VT is runs an L76 6.0L (same engine as found in the 2006
VZ V8 Commodores) and besides running a custom grind camshaft, the
L76 engine is basically standard, running standard heads, crankshaft,
pistons and pushrods. With some extra bolt-ons and a tune, Tango
1 pumps out 425hp at the wheels and runs a PB of 10.79 down the
quarter.
Genuine Windscreens.
The difference is loud and clear.
GMTechInfo.com
An example of the technical information that can be
found online. at GMTechInfo.com
To the naked eye all windscreens appear practically identical to the
original factory fitted item, however there are subtle, yet important
differences and you’ll be surprised to learn it is your ear that will notice
the difference.
Tests undertaken reveal the windscreen alone can transmit up to half of the
external noises, (engine, road, wind noise etc.) entering the vehicle cabin. Quiet
cabins is one of the most important goals for all vehicle manufacturers. A great
deal of research has been undertaken into reducing road noise and to improve
the driving experience.
Research has found a direct relationship between the level of noises in the cabin
with passenger fatigue, so the problem relates to passenger safety and not just
comfort.
Achieving lower noise levels is not as simple as using thicker glass, as increased
weight will contribute to higher fuel consumption. A windscreen needs to be as
lightweight as possible.
In the VE Commodore range, Holden use a revolutionary hi-performance design
in the manufacture of the windscreen, this contributes to cutting road and engine
noise entering the cabin. Our tests reveal a 4dB difference between regular
windscreens and the Genuine item.
Another important aspect of Windscreen design is wiper performance and
Holden design both elements in unison. Good wiper performance needs the
windscreen to have a consitant curvature with no flat areas. As you can see this
may not be the case with the aftermarket equilivant, see Figure 1.
Great care is taken to ensure our screens meet tight build tolerances ensuring
they fit correctly to the body with optimised stresses (tension and pressure) in
the glass, this means correct performance with the rest of the vehicle in the
case of an accident and a reduced probability of breakage. Care is also taken
to ensure little or no optical distortion occurs giving a clear view ahead, at any
angle.
Now with most insurance policies offering free automotive glass insurance, the
next time you or your customers need a windscreen replaced, request a Genuine
Holden Windscreen, the difference is loud and clear.
Figure 1: The images above and below highlight the surface friction
differences of a well designed windscreen and a poorly designed screen.
Holden Section Legend Title
Holden Legend - The Statesman.
As part of the Series II update, Holden has announced it will retire the long-running
Statesman badge - a name that has graced the luxury Commodore cousin since 1990, and
before that an HQ-WB range sold from 1971 to 1984. So in this issue, we are going to look
back at almost 40 years of Statesmans from Holden.
The Statesman name badge was introduced in 1971 with the HQ
series, replacing the Holden Brougham as Holden's luxury longwheelbase
vehicle.
Originally the Statesman range was sold through a separate
Statesman marquee, absent of all "Holden" branding. These cars were
sold through General Motors-Holden's dealerships and were based on
the mainstream Kingswood/Premier range. They offered much more
luxury, additional length, and styling to differentiate it from the smaller
donor cars.
The Statesman brand continued
through the subsequent HJ, HX and HZ
models with updates to the original HQ
bodywork.
The final WB series was sold alongside the Commodore in the early
1980's and represented the most significant update yet, with only the
front doors and bonnet common with the HZ sheet metal.
Despite this, the WB fell well short of sales expectations, that is, until
1984 when production cessation was announced which generated a
rapid sales spike. For Holden though, the decision had been made.
In 1990, after a six-year hiatus, demand for a long-wheelbase luxury
sedan in Australia saw Holden resurrect the Statesman and Caprice
names.
They offered much more luxury, additional length, and
styling to differentiate it from the smaller donor cars.
The WB Statesman production ceased in 1984 when Holden announced they were
vacating the luxury vehicle market to build more variations of the smaller Commodore.
The VQ Statesman, released in 1990 brought the luxury car back into Holden showrooms.
Given the model designation VQ, these new luxury models utilised the
long-wheelbase chassis taken from the VN Commodore station wagon.
Holden made many efforts to distinguish the Statesman from the
Commodore, with many more features and options included as well as
some major visual elements.
The Statesman and Caprice models have both had their fair share of
Australian firsts, The VQ Statesman was Holden's first car with IRS and
the Series II update saw the first Holden's with ABS
The second generation Holden Statesman came in 1999 with the WH
and was based on the VT Commodore. The WH series saw Holden
return to a standalone model designation, rather than adopting the same
used by the short-wheelbase Commodore. The WH was engineered
to be built in both left and right hand drive combinations. The WH was
popular across the Middle East re-badged as a Chevrolet Caprice.
The second generation Statesmans evolved through WL and WK model
updates alongside the VY and VZ Commodore up until 2006. It saw a
huge array of safety features included as standard, turning it into one of
the safest cars on Australian roads.
The WH Statesman was launched in 1999 and came with a host of options previously only found on expensive European brands.
The third generation WM Statesman was launched alongside the
VE Commodore in 2006. Unlike previous models, the WM no longer
shares its architecture with an Opel sedan. The rear doors are now
different to those found on the Commodore. Previously, it had to share
the doors, or at least the lower parts, with the Commodore.
This is just one of the ways Holden has tried to create greater
differentiation between the Statesman and the Commodore.
Now in 2010, Holden is looking to enhance the Caprice nameplate
with the Caprice and Caprice V. Market research consistently showed
that the Caprice name, with its definite sports luxury character,
appealed to a far broader customer base. So the great Holden luxury
car will continue to live on, with many exciting times ahead. Including
an export deal which will soon see Police squads in the US driving
Holden Caprices.
Reliability
Holden Supports iRescue 2010.
Wingless Wonders
Holden has donated 60 cars to the Australasian Road Rescue
Organisation (ARRO) to help hone the emergency response
skills of thousands of road rescue workers from around the
world taking part in its annual training event.
The vehicles, previously used by Holden for engineering evaluation and
not for public sale, include current Commodore sedan, Sportwagon and
long-wheel base luxury models.
Each was used by ARRO to provide crash scenarios for participants
in the iRescue 2010 - State and Australasian Rescue Challenge at
Melbourne’s Royal Showgrounds.
Fifteen teams of road rescue workers from Australia, New Zealand and
Hong Kong took part in the event, each performing three rounds of
rescue exercises to improve their emergency response skills including
rescue and medical treatment for injured motor vehicle occupants.
Holden Director – Integration and Safety, Ian Butler, said Holden was
proud to continue its long association with ARRO in support of its
efforts to reduce the road toll.
“Assisting ARRO is a significant part of Holden’s commitment to
enhancing vehicle, road and passenger safety,” Mr Butler said.
“We greatly admire the work ARRO undertakes and are pleased we can
help in their efforts to enhance the skills of the many men and women
who attend motor vehicle crashes each day.
“It is this type of work that goes a long way towards reducing the road
toll.”
Paul Jerome, Executive Officer of ARRO, said Holden’s involvement was a
vital component to the success of the training event.
“Holden’s support of this program gives all our road rescue teams the
incredibly valuable opportunity to undertake practical training drills using
new vehicles,” said Mr Jerome.
“Such training gives them outstanding skills and techniques putting them
at the forefront of rescue operations.
“The end result means the teams are better equipped to protect the lives
of people involved in motor vehicle crashes.”
ARRO is the peak body in Australasia for the development and exchange
of information, knowledge and skills in road rescue. Its membership
includes individuals and organisations in the emergency services such as
fire services, state emergency services and ambulance services.
There is a fresh new class of entry level speedway racing,
growing rapidly across Australia. At the heart of this growth is
the ever reliable Holden V6 as fitted in the VN Series II, to VR
Commodores.
‘Wingless Sprintcars’, as the name suggests are essentially sprintcars,
without the wings. Like their big brothers they use a direct drive system
which removes the need for a gearbox, coupled up with a chromoly
chassis and light weight composite panels this adds up to a high power
to weight ratio, making these cars very entertaining on the track.
Keeping costs down comes essentially from using standard engine
internals. The original camshaft, crankshaft, conrods, pistons and
unmodified heads must be used.
Competitors are allowed, to relocate the throttle body on the manifold,
recalibrate the engine ECU (rev-limited to 6000rpm) and replace fuel
injectors to allow the use of methanol fuel. With these simple tweaks,
these wingless wonders pump out around 200hp.
Photo: Phil Jordison
Holden Trade Club member Jeff Neve from Dutchy Automotive in NSW
is a huge supporter of the Wingless Sprints, with both his daughters
Monique and Rachel having competed with success.
“It’s great competitive racing, both my girls came through junior sedans
and now have progressed to Wingless Sprints and love it.”
“The use of standard Holden parts makes it easy on my wallet, they are
readily available and super reliable on the track.”
If you are interested in finding out more about Wingless Sprint Racing,
take a look at awsr.com.au for more information.
Holden Genuine Parts help keep these cars on track and many
are available at Trade Club prices from your Holden Dealer.
Thank you to everybody who took the time to enter the ACDelco Snap-on
Competition, and we are pleased to announce the winner.
Michael from Swavley Smash repairs in Sydney received a brand new Snap-on
40” roll cabinet, jacket and cap valued at over $3700 for his entry which the
Holden Trade Club team judged was most in need of replacing.
You can see from the picture, it may be a stretch to call it an “heirloom” and while
it may not have the grandeur of a grandfather clock, the old toolbox nevertheless
has the character of that favourite old chair.
“I reckon it was some time back in the 80’s, Laurie one of the tradies found an old
box on the side of the road, he threw it in the boot thinking it would be good for
something.”
A beer or three later and the toolbox started to take shape. It served Laurie well
for many years and when he left, it stayed in the corner of the shop.
A year or two past, and along came a new owner who gave it a new lease
on life. “John added the legs and wheels as well as making a couple of other
adjustments” remembers Michael.
“Eventually he moved on and again the toolbox was left behind, this is when it
passed on down to me”
"I'd like to thank Holden Trade Club, ACDelco
Essentials and Snap On for this great prize.
I'm looking forward to retiring the old toolbox
and putting the new one to good use."
Michael Swavley - Competition Winner
Order now, offer ends 31st December.
Michael was only too happy to inherit what by now had become such a fixture
in the workshop. He had replaced some of the old tools, and added his own
personal touches, “…and here it stands today.”
Will the old box make way for the new Snap-on? While no doubt the easy roll-out
drawers and casters are beyond compare, Michael will make sure there is room
for both in the workshop.
Prices listed are Trade exc GST. Valid 1 Nov - 31 December 2010.
“I don’t know if I will ever part with it,” he admits, “it’s got too many good
memories.” Just like a family heirloom!
ACDelco Batteries.
Whether you’re fitting to a car, truck, boat or anything in between, ACDelco has a quality range of batteries
to suit your needs. ACDelco Batteries are manufactured in modern facilities utilising the latest quality
control systems to produce high quality batteries that are rugged, reliable and ready to work.
Whether you choose from our Low Maintenance Accessible (LMA) or
Sealed Maintenance Free (SMF) range you can be assured of a quality product.
ACDelco use only wrought-lead calcium expanded grids rather than the common cast antimony grids.
They are less susceptible to corrosion and water loss, meaning a longer shelf life than conventional Lead
Acid batteries.
Features such as heavy duty flat bottomed polypropylene rib cases and long warranty 1 have earned
ACDelco a reputation for reliablility and longevity, so you can fit with confidence.
