3.2 Medical Services<br />

3.2.1 <strong>IPC</strong> Medical Code<br />

1. The <strong>IPC</strong> Medical Code (<strong>IPC</strong> H<strong>and</strong>book, Section 2, Chapter 1.4,<br />

http://www.paralympic.org/The<strong>IPC</strong>/HWA/H<strong>and</strong>book/) applies to all <strong>IPC</strong><br />

Competitions.<br />

2. The <strong>IPC</strong> has appointed the <strong>IPC</strong> Medical Committee under the guidelines of the <strong>IPC</strong><br />

H<strong>and</strong>book to provide <strong>IPC</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> with general advice on all medical matters.<br />

3.2.2 Responsibilities<br />

1. In accordance with the <strong>IPC</strong> Medical Code, athletes are responsible for their own<br />

physical <strong>and</strong> mental health <strong>and</strong> for their own medical supervision.<br />

2. By entering in an <strong>IPC</strong> Competition, an athlete specifically releases <strong>IPC</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong><br />

from any liability to the extent permitted by law for any loss, injury or damage that<br />

he or she may suffer in relation to or as a result of his or her participation in the<br />

Competition.<br />

3. Notwithst<strong>and</strong>ing the provisions of rule 3.2.2(2) NPCs shall use best efforts to<br />

ensure that all athletes under their jurisdiction competing in <strong>IPC</strong> Competitions are<br />

in a state of physical <strong>and</strong> mental health that is compatible with elite level<br />

competition in <strong>Athletics</strong>.<br />

4. Every NPC shall use best efforts to ensure that appropriate <strong>and</strong> continuous medical<br />

monitoring of its Athletes is undertaken. It is further recommended that NPCs<br />

organize for a period health evaluation on each Athlete that it enters for an <strong>IPC</strong><br />

Competition.<br />

5. NPCs are responsible to ensure suitable medical provision <strong>and</strong> medical insurance<br />

coverage for their delegation during travel to <strong>and</strong> from <strong>IPC</strong> Competition.<br />

6. It shall be the responsibility of the LOC in each case to ensure that suitable medical<br />

provision <strong>and</strong> medical insurance coverage is provided at all <strong>IPC</strong> Competitions. The<br />

<strong>IPC</strong> Medical Committee shall issue <strong>and</strong> keep updated practical guidelines to assist<br />

Organising Committees in providing adequate medical services <strong>and</strong> taking<br />

appropriate safety measures at <strong>International</strong> Competitions<br />

7. A Medical Director shall be appointed by the Organizing Committee for each <strong>IPC</strong><br />

Competition to prepare <strong>and</strong> co-ordinate the medical services <strong>and</strong> safety<br />

requirements during the competition. The <strong>IPC</strong> Medical & Scientific Director shall be<br />

the liaison between <strong>IPC</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> <strong>and</strong> the Competition Medical Director for all<br />

medial <strong>and</strong> safety-related matters. The <strong>IPC</strong> Medical & Scientific Director may<br />

delegate specific responsibilities to such person or persons at his/her discretion.<br />

8. At major <strong>IPC</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> Events the Organizing Committee shall be responsible to<br />

ensure representation of the <strong>IPC</strong> Medical Committee to monitor implementation of<br />

<strong>IPC</strong> <strong>Athletics</strong> <strong>Rules</strong> & <strong>Regulations</strong> <strong>2013</strong><br />
