GEOS / WG4 

Strict specifications such as the level handle end that 

turns back toward the door and certain technical 

details for casting in the fire-resistant insert, narrow 

the creative options when designing fittings for 

commercial buildings. However Gottfried Palatin is a 

tinkerer and a master of his craft. A gentle convexity 

on the handle nestles the lever handle in the hand and 

the tapering silhouette clearly distinguishes the model 

from its colleagues in the classic round tube design.

because of this extremely reduced language 

of form the model has been well established in 

the market for many years. A simple round tube 

bent once in a simple swing, a form that does no 

more, and does not want to do anything more 

than perform its function; something for purists.

Inspired by the intense construction activity of 

our new State Capital St. Pölten, we commissioned 

Michael Schaefer to design a commercial 

building fitting. He presented a design where 

the basic idea is characterized by a round neck 

resting within itself that transitions to a flat 

sympathetic handle with an end that has been 

pressed into an oval. This gives the lever handle 

a tapering dynamic swing to the door.

A high oval lever handle that tapers slightly – 

this is a simple description of the Model 2200. 

This discretely elegant design makes the Model 

2200 a secret tip in the GEOS product line and 

it is particularly interesting for restoration of old 

buildings. Thus for example it can be effectively 

combined with the Model 600, an Early Modern 

apartment building classic.

We added this model to our product line in the 

early seventies at the suggestion of a Swiss 

customer. Because the Swiss Railways used 

a very similar model, it became known as the 

“Swiss Railways door lever”. The form became 

famous through a concept by the architect Max 

Bill, who further developed this design for the 

Ulm College of Art.

Public Sectorse 



Stylistically this model that is distributed 

throughout the industry can be considered as 

«Early Modern». Thus it is the most modern of the 

classic lever handles. Since this form is shaped 

with such purity special value must be placed on 

execution of the details. Particular value is placed 

on a precise weld seam in the mitre and a cleanly 

worked lever handle end. And because the provisions 

for escape doors sensibly require a handle 

end that is bent back to the door, we have added 

the model 2500N to its side.

In the Anglo-Saxon area the knob plays a much 

more prominent role than it does with us for 

opening and closing doors. We prefer the 


knob 3154a/648AFH F1-SAT 

schaefer-design 


handle lever, which ergonomically is much more 

sophisticated. But these small spherical door 

openers are pretty and consequently we have 

consistently studied this theme. By the way our 

knobs can be ordered in designs that turn. With 

a turning doorknob it’s OK if you forget your key 

on occasion.
