<strong>Summer</strong> 2012<br />

In the summer of 2012, a group of students from<br />

University of <str<strong>on</strong>g>Penn</str<strong>on</strong>g>sylvania Graduate School of<br />

Educati<strong>on</strong> traveled across the globe to complete<br />

internships with <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Ten students in the<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Penn</str<strong>on</strong>g> GSE Internati<strong>on</strong>al Educati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Development <strong>Program</strong> (IEDP) worked in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> field offices in six countries, as well as<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s headquarters in Paris, France. The<br />

internships are a core comp<strong>on</strong>ent of the IEDP<br />

experience, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a unique aspect of the program<br />

that provides students with <strong>on</strong>-the-ground<br />

experience in global educati<strong>on</strong>al development. This <str<strong>on</strong>g>Penn</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> interns <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Dr. Dan Wagner, IEDP Director <br />

collaborative opportunity advanced IEDP <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> priorities as both focus <strong>on</strong> achieving the<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>-related United Nati<strong>on</strong>s Millennium Development Goals of literacy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> basic educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

IEDP student interns participated in educati<strong>on</strong>al workshops, planning meetings <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> field visits that served<br />

as valuable opportunities to engage with <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> colleagues <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other partners. The students also<br />

managed a variety of projects, which included: developing informati<strong>on</strong> graphics to make critical literacy<br />

data more accessible to communities in Thail<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>, documenting <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s role in educati<strong>on</strong>al planning<br />

in the Latin American <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Caribbean regi<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> researching <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> helping to prepare <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s fiveyear<br />

evaluati<strong>on</strong> of the African Uni<strong>on</strong>’s Internati<strong>on</strong>al Centre for Girls’ <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Women’s Educati<strong>on</strong> in Africa.<br />

While abroad, IEDP students stayed c<strong>on</strong>nected academically, professi<strong>on</strong>ally <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> pers<strong>on</strong>ally through an<br />

interactive, <str<strong>on</strong>g>Penn</str<strong>on</strong>g>-sp<strong>on</strong>sored blog site. This blog<br />

served as a forum for students to relate coursework<br />

to practice, exchange research <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> innovative<br />

practices, as well as share pers<strong>on</strong>al stories from their<br />

time abroad. Graduates of the IEDP said that the<br />

internship was crucial in gaining<br />

experience in the internati<strong>on</strong>al educati<strong>on</strong>al field<br />

as well as c<strong>on</strong>fidence in their abilities as<br />

development workers.<br />

Abby Campbell, <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Dakar: Abby’s work in<br />

Dakar focused <strong>on</strong> literacy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> educati<strong>on</strong> for women<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> girls. Abby co-wrote <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>'s five-year<br />

evaluati<strong>on</strong> of the African Uni<strong>on</strong>’s Internati<strong>on</strong>al Centre for<br />

Girls’ <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Women’s Educati<strong>on</strong> in Africa, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> also<br />

provided feedback <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> recommendati<strong>on</strong>s for a draft of<br />

Nigeria’s Nati<strong>on</strong>al Strategy Document for Adult <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Youth<br />

Literacy.<br />

Naoko Enomoto, <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Bangkok: Naoko was<br />

assigned to the UIS-AIMS unit while interning in Bangkok.<br />

As a part of this unit, Naoko helped prepare the Regi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

Synthesis Report based <strong>on</strong> resp<strong>on</strong>ses to the Literacy<br />

Household Survey. Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, she assisted regi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

experts in teacher training meetings, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> created<br />

informati<strong>on</strong> graphics to display literacy data in ways<br />

more accessible to the larger community.<br />

Maria Aguirre, <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Santiago de Chile: While in<br />

Chile, Maria completed a positi<strong>on</strong> paper <strong>on</strong> the role of<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> in educati<strong>on</strong> planning in the regi<strong>on</strong>. She<br />

was also resp<strong>on</strong>sible for creating a detailed work-plan<br />

to support office activities <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> developing a codebook<br />

regarding procedures <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> policies. <br />

Xia<strong>on</strong>ing Zhang, <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Beijing: While in Beijing,<br />

Xia<strong>on</strong>ing’s major focus included translating a h<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>book discussing homophobic bullying <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> providing<br />

support for various efforts around HIV/AIDS <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> sex educati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Fatima Tuz Zahra, <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Paris: Fatima served<br />

as in intern at <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> HQ in Paris, France, where<br />

she worked in the literacy team to document the<br />

educati<strong>on</strong>/literacy plans <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> policies from over 130<br />

countries <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> evaluate them in preparati<strong>on</strong> for the<br />

2012 Internati<strong>on</strong>al Literacy Day celebrati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

c<strong>on</strong>ference. She also helped develop the prototype<br />

for Literacy Plus program <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> database for the<br />

United Nati<strong>on</strong>s Literacy Decade surveys.<br />

Khaing Zah Lynn, <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Bangkok: Khaing Zah<br />

c<strong>on</strong>ducted desk reviews <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> studied effective<br />

educati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> literacy <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> N<strong>on</strong>-formal Educati<strong>on</strong> (NFE) to engage unreached children <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> youth in the


Asia-Pacific Regi<strong>on</strong>. Her research focused <strong>on</strong><br />

equivalency primary programs <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> financial literacy.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong>, she worked <strong>on</strong> the curriculum proposal<br />

for equivalency programs in Papua New Guinea,<br />

selecting appropriate <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> exemplary curriculum<br />

frameworks in the regi<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>-Hamburg’s<br />

Institute of Lifel<strong>on</strong>g Learning (UIL). She also assisted<br />

with organizing <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> preparing for the Asia-Pacific<br />

Annual Review Meeting <strong>on</strong> the Japanese Funds-in-<br />

Trust in the Field of Educati<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Regi<strong>on</strong>al Expert<br />

Meeting <strong>on</strong> Inclusive Educati<strong>on</strong> through Quality<br />

Teacher Educati<strong>on</strong> in Asia-Pacific.<br />

Up<strong>on</strong> her graduati<strong>on</strong> from the IEDP program, Khaing Zah found work as an Educati<strong>on</strong> Officer with<br />

UNICEF, Yang<strong>on</strong>, Myanmar. Her current job is to engage in a new nati<strong>on</strong>al program called<br />

Comprehensive Educati<strong>on</strong> Sector Review (CESR). She works closely with UNICEF’s Chief Technical<br />

Advisor.<br />

collaborati<strong>on</strong> in March 2012, during a visit by <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Director-General Irina Bokova to <str<strong>on</strong>g>Penn</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Dir-Genl Bokova,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Penn</str<strong>on</strong>g> Vice Provost for global initiatives Ezekiel Emanuel,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> GSE Dean Andy Porter signed a Memor<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>um of<br />

Underst<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ing which, am<strong>on</strong>g other things, officially<br />

established <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s commitment to host IEDP interns<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> offices around the world. Bokova’s visit also<br />

served as the formal inaugurati<strong>on</strong> for the <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g> Chair<br />

in Learning <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> Literacy, Professor Dan Wagner at <str<strong>on</strong>g>Penn</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

Professor Wagner is the current IEDP director <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> has<br />

extensive professi<strong>on</strong>al experience with <str<strong>on</strong>g>UNESCO</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Penn</str<strong>on</strong>g>’s Internati<strong>on</strong>al Educati<strong>on</strong>al Development <strong>Program</strong> has a unique approach that incorporates an<br />

internati<strong>on</strong>al internship experience as part of its coursework.<br />
