Every Journey needs a great Guide ... and every girl DESERVES her own!
Play softball? You wouldn’t share one mitt with the whole team.
Love to dance? You wouldn’t share a pair of ballet slippers with your entire class.
Notes
From Natalye
Welcome 2013!
Thank you for helping to celebrate our first 100 years
and making 2012 a great year for our Council.
But, the year ended with some sadness as a number of our Girl Scout Sisters
were impacted by Hurricane Sandy and suffered loss. Girl Scouts stepped up
all around and many of you did good things to help our sisters in need. A story
that came to me recently about Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania (Mill Creek)
holding a “Sisters Helping Sisters” supply drive to make care packages for
fellow Girl Scouts in Staten Island, NY. This is just one example of the many acts
of kindness around our Council. Thanks Girl Scouts and volunteers!
As we look to a new year, 2013 is full of endless possibilities. We want you to get
the most out of this magazine. It’s your story, tell it! Look for articles written
by your fellow Girl Scouts throughout this issue.
Also, check out the special pull-out Camp Guide. What do you want to do
this summer? Are you interested in swimming, adventure, horses, archery or
the environment? Do you want to try new things? Connect with old friends or
discover new friends? We have something for everyone in our Camps.
Never been to camp? No worries!
Your Sister Girl Scouts share some of their camp stories
throughout this issue. We want to see you this summer.
Come join the fun!
Yours In Scouting,
The cookie program
is so much more than earning
funds for girls to use towards
experiences for their troop.
These girls are learning
important life skills!
The Cookie Program teaches
girls the 5 skills that will
help them in business and
in everyday life.
The 5 Skills Shaping
Your Girl’s Future:
Goal setting
is the first of the 5 skills girls learn
during the Cookie Program. Girls set
goals for themselves and their troop
during the program and they create
plans to reach these goals. This skill is
very important to teach girls how to set
and reach goals in school, throughout
their career and in life!
Decision making
is the second of the 5 skills. Once girls
have set the goals for their troops and
themselves, they need to figure out
where and when to sell cookies. They
will also need to decide what they would
like to do with their troop funds and
possibly their individual recognitions.
Learning proper decision making skills
will help them later in life with important
life changing decisions they may have
to make. Decision making is something
we all must do on a day to day basis and
learning this skill at a young age with the
coaching of adults in their lives, will help
girls make better decisions.
Money Management
is another important skill the girls
learn from the Cookie Program. Taking
cookie orders and handling customer
transactions help the girls learn how to
handle money. They learn how to reach
their goals by learning budgets as well
as how to keep track of earnings. This
is an important skill to help girls with
future budgeting and saving as well as
understanding their earnings, from their
allowance to their future paychecks!
People Skills
is the fourth skill. Girls learn to how
to talk to customers and work with
one another in a team. Girls learn the
importance of communicating with
others. This is an important life skill
that will help girls throughout their
lives from working in teams during
school projects, on sports teams or
just playing with one another to giving
corporate presentations or closing a
company sale.
Business Ethics
is the final of the 5 skills. During this
program, girls have to learn to be
honest and make responsible business
decisions for themselves and their
troop. The world needs ethical leaders
and building the skills needed to
understand Business Ethics, will help
teach Girl Scouts how to lead!
Teaching girls these skills will help
them become successful in their
future careers. Companies want
to hire someone who is honest,
trustworthy, and reliable. They look
for someone who can meet deadlines
and knows how to set and reach goals.
Companies want someone who is a
good communicator that can work
well with their coworkers as well as
clients and customers. These skills
also teach girls how to budget and
manage their money so they can
become more responsible adults. The
Cookie Program helps girls learn and
understand these skills, no additional
activities are required!
Girl Scout
Cookie Program!
January 17- March 2, 2013
This year’s theme for the Cookie
Program is What Can a Girl Do? You
may be asking yourself what can a
girl do with the Cookie Program? How
does this program effect a Girl Scout?
Girls set cookie goals to support their
chosen activities for the year, to fund
community service and leadership
projects, to attend summer camp,
to travel to destinations near and far
and to provide events for girls in their
community.
When girls sell cookies, they combine
fun and friends with leadership
lessons, organizational skills, money
management, and more!
5=52 contest
Each customer that purchases 5
packages of Girl Scout Cookies at a
time can enter into a drawing to win
a year’s supply of Girl Scout Cookies
(52 packages!) You can find the thank
you cards to give to customers on our
website, http://www.gsep.org and click
on “Cookie Forms and Resources”
under “Cookies and More.” These thank
you cards will direct the customer to
the online entry form.
Mobile Payments
Since we had such a positive
experience with the mobile payment
pilot program, we have decided to use
this method council wide for the 2013
Cookie Program! Please contact Daniel
Rau at drau@gsep.org to learn more
about our mobile payment program.
Price
Increase
The Girl Scouts of
Eastern Pennsylvania will be increasing
the price of Girl Scout Cookies this
season from $3.50 - $4.00.
The decision to raise the price was a
necessary move for our council. This
increase will cover costs and give
girls the opportunity to sharpen their
business skills by understanding how
costs effect the price of goods.
This will be a positive move for
our council.
| DESTINATION
“
I loved seeing the girls laugh and smile when
we did things that they would not have had a
chance to do otherwise.
This summer, I went on a Girl
Scout Destination. I have attended
3 Destinations in previous years
(Astronaut Fast Track, G.E.M.M., and
Our Cabana) but I was particularly
excited (and apprehensive!) about this
opportunity. I was a counselor to girls
with special needs at the Juliette Low
Camp in Kansas City, Missouri. I chose
this Destination because I want to be a
special needs teacher.
Before I even began my journey,
I had to do a pre-project that required
researching different disabilities
that the girls may have. I also had to
volunteer at an organization to become
familiar with some of the challenges
I would be faced with at camp. I
volunteered at Camp Freedom, a
one-week overnight camp for children
with diabetes. Although I learned a lot
there, it couldn’t compare to the things
I learned at Juliette Low Camp.
”
When I arrived in Kansas City
I stayed with a host family before the
camp session began. The next five days
were filled with training. I learned how
to do many things, including helping
people who use wheelchairs , deal with
medical issues such as seizures, and
caring for girls who cannot provide daily
care for themselves.
I was full of excitement on the day
when the campers finally arrived.
We did so much with the girls. We
helped them earn badges, and we led
activities for the girls, such as Harry
Potter Night, and cooking stuffed
French toast and banana boats. We
had campfires, sung songs and had
cookouts. I loved seeing the girls laugh
and smile when we did things that
they would not have had a chance to
do otherwise. I liked giving them this
chance because on the inside, these
campers have the same wants and
needs as children without challenges.
Written by TIANNA P.
However, it was not just work. I had
real Kansas BBQ. There’s nothing like it!
We went shopping. No trip is complete
without it! I got to explore Kansas City
on my days off. We visited the Plaza,
a Kansas City Royals baseball game,
the World’s Fair Art Show and two
amusement parks, Worlds of Fun and
Oceans of Fun. I also got a chance to
go to the theater to see The Princess
and the Pea. Last but not least, I got to
catch up on sleep!
Being at this camp
reaffirmed my goal to
become a special education
teacher and work with special
needs children.
I will never forget this
experience. I had a wonderful
time and I look forward to
going back next year!
Costa Rican
Written by Eva B.
This summer I went to Costa Rica
through the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
Destinations program. The 15-day
program that I attended, Rainforest,
River, and Reef, gave me an opportunity
to meet new girls from all over the
United States. While in Costa Rica, I got
to white- water raft, swim through a
rapid, zip line, hike, boogie board, surf,
rappel down a waterfall, and climb a
tree. For our service project, we planted
trees to help the monkeys. While
hiking through Costa Rica, we had four
different homestays, which was really
exciting because we got to see how
different families lived and did things.
My favorite parts of the trip
were rafting, zip lining, planting trees,
repelling down a waterfall, and learning
how to surf. I would have to say that the
most challenging part of this trip was
hiking for a full week.
Since we had to sleep under a tarp,
everyone had to learn how to work
together even if we didn’t like each
other, which was kind of hard for some
of the girls since we were all different
age groups. We managed to get
through it and in the end we called each
other sisters, even through the hard
times. Even though I didn’t really like
all of the hiking, by the end of the trip
I would have to say that I would never
have had another opportunity to do
this kind of thing again.
I would most definitely do it again
because it teaches you a lot about
yourself and shows you how much you
can really handle. It also teaches you
about different cultures and teamwork,
because without teamwork, I don’t
think anyone in my group would have
survived for 15 days.
Sarah W.
2012
On the days leading up to my trip,
I still couldn’t believe it was all
happening. A girl like me, who had
barely strayed from my own front door,
was headed off to Los Angeles for a
week to write, direct, and produce a
short film. Everyone kept telling me
what a great opportunity it was and
I agreed, but I was unsure of myself.
Having never been away from my
family or friends for such an extended
amount of time, I was worried about
the inevitable: missing home. As my
mother waved goodbye and I headed
onto my plane, I felt like a kid on the
first day of school—unprepared, not
knowing if I would fit in.
The first day, after a crazy night of
settling in, was one of our busiest.
My roommate and I learned one of
the most important lessons of the
entire trip: always set your alarm for
breakfast. Luckily, a kind soul had
some cookies, which we split as we
packed into cars and headed to
Warner Brother’s Studios.
16 spark • spring/summer 2013 • gsep.org • 888.564.4657
The VIP Tour was mind-blowing to all
of us; we not only walked on the set of
two well-known Warner Brother shows,
but we also learned the many tricks of
television. Following the tour, we headed
back to campus and began writing
our own masterpieces. It was my first
experience of co-writing and, to this
day, I have yet to see something more
remarkable than five people coming
together to accomplish one goal.
We were given our parameters;
the college campus we were staying on
became our set and we had one day to
film. Our film told the tale of a firstyear
teacher and a mysterious man
who leaves his bag at a café. We each
worked as extras, sound mixers, and
boom holders as our actors, Rachel and
Ryan, brought life to the words we had
written. Everything was new to me and
I paid attention, with welcoming eyes,
to the magic of what was happening.
Editing was the toughest aspect, which
we learned as we all stayed up with our
editor, Jared, working until the early
hours of the morning to bring our film
to completion. The night before our
departure, we all gathered together to
watch our short films. It was then that I
learned that creating a film is nowhere
near as exciting as watching its effect
on the audience.
The following morning, as we
hugged and promised to keep in
touch, I couldn’t help but feel like I
had changed. No longer was I scared
to venture out into the world and
set sail to my unknown future. It was
through the Hollywood Dreamin’ Girl
Scout Destination that I suddenly saw
a sea of new adventures to embark
on. Suddenly I wanted to travel, write
scripts, and see my stories come to
life on the big screen. I will forever
remember that experience.
“
I can’t tell you if I will grow
to become an Academy
Award-winning director or if
my writing will ever make the
big screen, but I now have the
courage to try!
First Lady Of Pennsylvania’s Visit |
>
October 4, 2012
Dear Mrs. Corbett:
Thank you for accepting the invitation to join the Little Lehigh Service Unit
Fall 2012 camping trip at Camp Wood Haven this weekend. Having been a Girl
Scout yourself you know that these weekends provide a special opportunity for
girls to discover their voice, connect with one another and take action in their
communities through workshops, craft making and both service and learning
projects. The Little Lehigh Service Unit includes girls from the East Penn
and Salisbury school districts and all girls attending camp this weekend will
complete the requirements to earn their 100th anniversary patch.
…I am sure you will enjoy your time camping, hiking and participating in
workshops like Camp Cooking Techniques of the Past or The Original Girl
Scout Cookie Bake-Off. The girls you are camping with are all courageous,
confident and full of character and truly are making the world a better place by
participating in service projects like Quarters for Juliette Fund which supports
girls’ international travel and Books for Cops ‘n Kids which improves the reading
skills of at-risk children.
Thank you, once again, Mrs. Corbett for your participation and support of the
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania. We are proudly the largest girl-serving
organization in Pennsylvania... we hope that you enjoy your time with our
current scouts and build memories with them to last a lifetime.
Sincerely,
“My Girl Scout experience has
taught me that there are many
ways in which to perceive the
world, but all of the perspectives
can be collaborated to make
a positive difference in not
only those involved but those
affected in the community. I
have learned that women are
strong, independent, and amazing
in every way, and every woman
deserves to see how incredible
and beautiful she is, both inside
and out. Girl Scouts taught me
a difference in the world, and Girl
change the world for millions of
Gold Award
The Real Robotics
| Gold Award Story
Written by Ingrid R.
My name is
Ingrid and I am
a junior at
Conrad Weiser
High School.
I have been
in love with
robotics since
sixth grade
and have been
involved in
Girl Scouts since
first grade.
My interest in robotics was sparked
when I started taking robotics classes
at the Reading Area Community
College (RACC) “Kids’ College” on
Saturdays. I was often the only girl in
the class, but I didn’t mind because I
enjoyed the opportunity to build things
and see how they work. My instructors
were very supportive and encouraged
me to keep taking these classes. Having
someone telling me that I’m good at
something and that I should continue
was very motivating.
These simple words from my robotics
instructors at RACC went a long
way. When I was a freshman in high
school, my extremely supportive
parents and one of the teachers
at the school helped me to form a
robotics team. This team is part of
an amazing organization called FIRST
(For Inspiration and Recognition of
Science and Technology). Their goal
is to create a learning environment
for students and to support gracious
professionalism. I really fell in love
with this program because they
supported working together, which is
not something you think about when
someone says ‘robotics’. Most people
think of battle bots and being able to
crush their opponent.
I wanted to change this common
paradigm with people and I decided that
one way to start was to teach people
in the community. It was then that I
finally came up with what I was going
to do for my Girl Scout Gold Award. I
contacted the Conrad Weiser Middle
School principal and asked if I could
start a robotics club for 7th and 8th
graders there. He was extremely excited
about incorporating robotics into the
curriculum and gave us all of the supplies
needed. Having this much support from
so many people really made a difference.
I could not have earned my Gold Award
without these people.
After everything at the school was set
up, I asked some of the high school
robotics team members to help me
teach these students and they agreed.
Walking into the classroom for the first
time was a bit nerve-racking. Would
the students approve? Would they be
interested in what I had to offer them?
These questions were soon answered. I
had 25 students signed up for the class
and I taught them twice a week. Every 9
or 10 weeks I would get a new rotation
of students who signed up for the class.
It was such a joy to be able to inspire
and teach them because I was once the
student and now I was the teacher.
Gold Award Story |
>
All of the activities, badges, and cookie
sales in Girl Scouts have prepared me
for my Gold Award. When I walked into
the classroom, I found myself using all
of the skills I learned from being a Girl
Scout. I taught the students about the
basic components that are used in
robots and how to put them together.
I also introduced them to the basic
design process by letting them decide
what their robot was going to look like.
The students had to plan ahead and
figure out what could possibly go
wrong with their robot.
To help the high school robotics team
members teach the club, I wrote a
handbook with useful information
for teaching middle school students.
It included instructions for building
a basic chassis and explanations for
how sensors and other components
on the robot work. I also had a section
in the handbook for basic meeting
guidelines so the team members knew
what should get accomplished at each
one. Also Included in this book are my
notes and experience in working with
the students. I added some tips on
how to keep them focused and under
control. I hope that with this handbook,
the middle school robotics club will
continue and I hope that I can continue
to inspire students in the fields of
robotics and engineering.
Middle School
Robotics Club Pictures
Ingrid and other volunteers from the high school
team teach the middle school robotics club,
explaining how each part of the robot functions.
The students use a diagram
of the electronics to piece
everything together.
The students learn the importance of
planning out their robots, and everyone has a
chance to draw their ideas.
Students learn how to
program the robot.
Silver
Awa
Charge Up for Recycling
12,600 – the number of plastic bottles
being thrown away at their junior high school
every year until Brennah D. and Erin S. decided
that they could make a difference.
Seeing that there was a problem, the
girls seized upon the opportunity to
earn their Silver Award while helping
the environment and raising the level
of consciousness at Boyertown Junior
High East. They talked with the principal
who supported their idea of setting up
a plastic bottle recycling program.
Erin and Brennah began investigating
every aspect of recycling. As part of
the research, they organized a meeting
with their volunteers and a supervisor
from Waste Management to learn more
about the process of recycling and the
importance of reusing resources. Once
they had mastered the background
information, the girls began spreading
the word about the new program. They
announced the start of the project on
their school’s TV News, and also held a
contest in which students were able to
enter their design for the barrels that
would hold the recycled water bottles.
The two competition winners helped
to paint the barrels, which were then
placed in the school cafeteria.
Erin and Brennah created and
distributed surveys to their volunteers
and participants to get feedback, and
the results were clear; the project
was a success! Each day, about 70
plastic bottles are now being recycled.
“I learned that I can be a good leader
and supervisor of a team,” says
Brennah, adding that she discovered
the importance of being proactive.
Erin felt the same way, “I learned that I
have qualities to be a good leader and
organize other projects. I also learned
how much time it takes to complete a
project this size. I would have tried to
come up with other ways to advertise
our project because it was difficult for
people to listen to the announcements
on the TV.”
“
We would like to thank
our moms for the
encouragement that they
gave us and the time they spent
with us,” say Erin and Brennah.
“We would also like to thank all
of our volunteers for the
time they devoted to helping us
”
complete this project!”
Bronze Award Story |
Bronze
Award
Winning Competitions for the Environment
Girl Scout Junior Troop 1645 of Oley,
located in Berks County, chose a Bronze Award project
that focused on caring for the environment.
The five girls who completed the award were
Jenifer L., Erinn M., Allison N.,
Rachel N., and Alysha U..
The troop was recognized for collecting
61,852 plastic bags to be recycled
and reused by Trex Company, one of
the nation’s leading manufacturers of
wood alternative products for decking
materials. Trex puts forth an annual
challenge to the entire country to
see which organization can collect
the most plastic bags, which are
then recycled into wood alternative
products. This year, Troop 1645 was
the top contributor for the drive in the
northeast region.
While working on the Get Moving
Journey, the girls became interested
in recycling. They visited Pioneer
Crossing Landfill of Birdsboro, where
they saw how quickly the landfill could
fill up with trash. Observing the girls’
newfound passion for sustainability,
Troop leader Heather Ulrich began
searching for relevant Bronze Award
projects. She discovered Trex’s
contest, and the idea for their project
took off from there.
After receiving permission from
the Oley Valley School District, the
troop distributed collection bins,
provided by Trex, to each school.
They advertised the collection drive in
the Parent Teacher Organization and
school newsletters, as well as through
television announcements. The girls
kept a tally of the number of bags
collected by each school, and then
distributed awards accordingly. As the
northeast regional winner, the troop
received a park bench and birdhouse
made of recycled plastic products
from Trex. The bench was donated to
the Oley Valley Middle School because
they collected the highest number of
bags per student; the birdhouse was
given to Oley Valley Elementary
School, the runner-up, for
the school’s courtyard
and butterfly garden.
Workshop Objectives: 2013
Participants will learn how
to transform community
service into a Silver or Gold
Award Take Action Project, as
well as learn how to advocate
for themselves and others.
Girls will identify expressed
community needs, and
then develop a Take Action
Project plan that identifies
a root cause and has a
measurable and sustainable
impact on the community.
While girls develop a project
plan, adults will learn about
the approval process,
discuss various fund-raising
methods, and see sample
project ideas.
*Participants who attend one of the threehour
workshops asterisked will also have an
opportunity to work with the Council Learning
Facilitators to fill out the proposal paperwork
and discuss possible projects.
Please note that a girl must have completed
the age level Journey required for the award
before she registers for the workshop. Girls,
parents, and volunteers are all welcome
to attend the awards workshop and must
register online.
Community Service
Bars for Girl Scout
Cadettes, Senior and
Ambassadors
When you earn a Community service
bar, you are making a difference in your
community – and practicing values of
the Girl Scout Law. It’s also a great way
to get involved with a cause you care
about. To earn a Community Service
bar, first choose an organization you’d
like to volunteer with. The organization
will need to agree to give you instructions
about the work you’ll be doing. GSEP
needs to approve your service, so
contact girlawards@gsep.org before
you begin. Once you’ve chosen your
organization, complete at least 20 hours
of service to earn the bar.
Service to Girl
Scouting Bar for Girl
Scout Cadettes, Senior
and Ambassadors
If you choose to volunteer at least 20
you can receive a Service to Girl
Scouting bar. For example, you might
volunteer your time at troop meetings
for younger girls or at special event for
younger girls, be an office assistant for
your council or service unit, or help with
special projects.
Both Service Bar applications can
be found on our website at ForGirls/
