ENGINEERING GCSE<br />

Exam Board: AQA<br />

This qualification will provide a sound basis for advanced level study<br />

or progression into vocational training or direct into employment in industry<br />

COURSE CONTENT<br />

The AQA GCSE in Engineering aims to enable students to:<br />

Engage in a range of engineering processes and develop as effective and independent students.<br />

Develop a range of transferable engineering skills that will form a foundation for future learning and<br />

progression.<br />

Understand engineering and related sectors and the contribution they make to society and the<br />

economy.<br />

Develop an awareness of emerging technologies and sustainable development in the context of<br />

engineering.<br />

HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED?<br />

The specification consists of two compulsory units. One unit is internally assessed through the production of<br />

portfolio in a controlled assessment task and one is externally assessed by a written test.<br />

Unit 1: External Exam<br />

Single examination, lasting 1 hour which is 40% of the total marks covering the use of information and<br />

communication technology (ICT), modern and smart materials and control technology in engineering.<br />

Understanding the impact and advantages and disadvantages of using modern technology in engineering.<br />

Unit 2: Design and Graphical Communication<br />

Students produce a design solution for an engineered product, including interpreting and producing<br />

engineering drawings. A total of 50 marks are available for the controlled assessment task which is 60% of the<br />

total marks.<br />

WHAT PROPORTIONS OF MARKS ARE THERE FOR CONTROLLED ASSESSMENT SECTIONS AND THE<br />

EXAM?<br />

Students must produce an internally assessed portfolio for unit 1 (60%) and take an externally marked test for<br />

unit 2 (40%).<br />

IS THERE ANY PERSONAL COST TO ME FOR THIS COURSE?<br />

None.<br />

WHAT SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE AND/OR ABILITY DO I NEED PRIOR TO TAKING THIS COURSE?<br />

Pupils would find the following learning, skills and aptitudes helpful:<br />

Ability in literacy and numeracy. Competent user of IT and keyboard skills.<br />

Motivation to work independently. Enjoys problem solving through making skills.<br />

POST 16 PROGRESSION<br />

The AQA GCSE in Engineering offers opportunities for progression such as:<br />

Related qualifications at Level 3, for example Edexcel A Level Engineering, BTEC National Certificates and<br />

Diplomas in Engineering and modern apprenticeships all of which are provided at Petroc.<br />

Employment within the engineering sector and related industries.<br />

Engineering can be studied to Foundation Degree level at the University of Plymouth in Petroc. This GCSE<br />

opens many doors to Further and Higher education along with employment opportunities in the<br />

engineering sectors.<br />
