LEGENDARY ORIGIN OF<br />

THE KOH-I-NOOR<br />

This wonder diamond of India, with its chequered<br />

history running into thousands of years and which<br />

later on came to be known as Koh-i-Noor, had a<br />

legendary origin. It is indeed very difficult to prove<br />

by unimpeachable historical evidence that the great<br />

diamond of which we read in the Puranas and other<br />

ancient Scriptures of the Hindus, was the same which<br />

later on played such an important part in our country's<br />

history; but from the extraordinary size, unsurpassed<br />

brilliance, and other distinguishing features of the<br />

different diamonds about which we read in the<br />

narratives of the various periods, one can reasonably<br />

reconcile their identity. It is true that there is<br />

difference in the weight and size given in the various<br />

records available, and it raises doubts and even<br />

confusion; but we should not attach any great
