100 days of learning
Special to 21 Voices
NORTH HAMPTON |
The three first grade classes
at North Hampton School
mixed together on Monday,
February 5, in order to celebrate
their 100th day as first
graders.
Students were greeted
with a 100th day book readaloud.
Then, working in
blended groups the children
participated in math centers
of their choice experiencing
a variety of counting, grouping,
and building activities.
After a break, the children
once again mixed with peers
from all first grades and
engaged in literacy experiences.
They wrote creative
stories and drew pictures
of their perspective of what
they will look like at 100.
The morning’s activities
culminated with a visit
from a 100-year-old lady.
This guest was gracious
and answered the students’
many questions
of what
it was like to
be 100 years
old.
Their questions
varied
from her favorite
animals
and foods, to
whether she
wished she were younger —
and if she watches “Oprah”
on television.
The 100th day of school
not only marks the morethan-halfway
point to the
end of the school year, it also
provides a great topic for
developing lessons in multiple
subjects.
Second grade class
opens museum at NHS
NORTH HAMPTON |
We are from North Hampton
School in Mrs. Eaves and Mr.
Stevens’ second grade class
called 2-E. We started a personal
inquiry project where each
of us would choose a topic,
decide what we would learn
and find a way to share it.
Each of us studied one thing
of our own that we thought
was interesting. We chose
anything we wanted that we
could research and learn more
about.
To begin making the choice
we listed at least three things
we were interested in. The one
we were most interested in is
what we started with.
We chose to learn about
leopard geckos, ice hockey,
gerbils, alien close encounters
on the Seacoast, Bigfoot and
Yeti, long-tailed grass lizards,
new world monkeys, my family,
goldfish, fossils, unicorns,
giraffes, cocker spaniel puppies,
my mom, goldfinches,
chemistry and potions, my
Uncle Bill and cannibalism.
We researched and read.
Some of us used books and
the library. Some of us used
computers. Some of us even
interviewed people to get
information.
We asked for help and got
what we needed on our own.
We made drafts and plans. We
re-did things and organized
them. It took us over a month.
That was much longer than we
thought.
When we had learned all
we could and answered all of
our questions, we each made
something to show what we
had learned. We decided to
put it in a museum for our
families to visit.
We chose to share our
learning in our own way. We
made books, essays, posters,
charts, models and a power
point. One of us even wrote
out directions for making
things.
We set up the museum in
our classroom. We hung the
posters from the ceiling and
put our books and models on
our tables. We made a program
telling who had learned
what.
On Thursday night our
families came to tour the
museum. Some of us stayed
by our projects to present them
and some of us led our families
on a museum tour. When all
our families were there we had
about 100 people in our room!
We got great comments
from our families. They learned
some of what we had learned
by reading our projects and
talking to us. We had a lot of
fun teaching them. It was exciting
to direct our own learning.
The 2-E Kids Museum turned
out great!
