THE NIGHT OF BROKEN GLASS
November 8–9, 1938
70 Years Later
This month marks the 70th anniversary of Kristallnacht,
the night of broken glass; tens of thousands of
Jewish homes in Germany, as well as synagogues,
businesses and schools, were attacked and burned,
officially launching Hitler’s full-blown campaign of
terror against the Jews. Because so many windows in
shops and buildings were smashed during the night
of wanton destruction, leaving splinters and shards
everywhere, that night would forever be known as
Kristallnacht. It was a horrific beginning leading to an
incomprehensible end for 6 million European Jews.
In remembrance of the pain and suffering of that
fateful night, I wish to share a story of faith and
renewal from a new book by Yitta Halberstam and
Judith Leventhal entitled “Small Miracles of the
Holocaust.” The true story is entitled “The Philosopher.”
The Philosopher
Yisroel Besser
Victor Frankl was a young man of spirit and culture, a
penetrating thinker who had distinguished himself through
his innovative ideas. He was a gifted writer, and among
his most precious possessions was the manuscript he was
working on—a brilliant thesis that elaborated upon his own
personal philosophy.
The Nazi guard who “welcomed” him to Auschwitz cared
nothing about who he was or what ideas he harbored. They
knew that he was a Jew, and thus deserving of the most
dehumanizing treatment possible. They stripped him of his
clothing and possessions, shaved his head, and reminded
him that the term human being was reserved for a particular
race—and certainly not for Jews.
Although they took so much from him, they could not
take his greatest resource—his ability to contemplate, to
question, to probe. So as they pushed and kicked at him,
as they cursed and spat at him, he was traveling in another
realm. He believed that man should only live a life filled with
meaning, with significance and goals. To merely “survive,”
to simply avoid the pitfalls of the camps, he did not consider
this to be a life filled with meaning, for that would be
mere coincidence and nothing more. True meaning would
indicate that the actual experience of suffering through the
camps also had a deeper dimension, answers that only a
discerning questioner would be able to discover.
These were the thoughts in Victor Frankl’s head as the beasts
took away the physical representation of his philosophy—
the manuscript he had been hiding under his shirt. This was
his lowest point. His mental “child,” the product of his toil
and determination, was being taken from him. He felt like
his life had lost its meaning, it was worthless.
He shuffled along in the camp where he was handed a
tattered uniform, one whose previous owner had long
since been led to the place of no return. He donned the
striped rags, resigning himself to this new existence, to this
nightmarish world without hope, without meaning, and
without his precious manuscript. This loss left a gaping void
in Victor Frankl’s heart, where he carried his life’s work.
Then his fingers felt something. There was a tiny scrap of
paper in a pocket, left over from the poor inmate who had
worn these clothes before him. He opened up the small
paper and tried to make out the words written on it: Shema
Yisrael, Hashem Elokeinu, Hashem Echad…Hear, O Israel,
the Lord is our G-d, the Lord is One…
He is one. He is in control. He is leading us through the
depths of despair. He is expecting great things from us,
wherever we may be. Victor Frankl had his meaning, and he
had his manuscript.
Seventy years later, the words “Shema Yisrael” are
still proudly spoken by Jews on every continent at
least twice a day. Despite the horrors of the past,
and in honor and memory of those who perished,
the immortal message of these six Hebrew words
continues to give meaning to our existence as a
people. As you commemorate the 70th anniversary
of Kristallnacht on November 9, I ask you to take the
time to recite the watchword of our faith on that day,
holding dear to your heart the memory of millions,
including Victor Frankl.
Shema Yisrael adonai elohenu adonai echad.
L’Shalom,
Sing for Joy: Finding Your Outer Voice
I
wish there were words that could express the feelings
I experienced standing before you on the bimah. The
vast presence of our congregation in prayer was an
inspiration. And the sound of your voices in prayer, reading
or singing, has remained with me well past the closing of
the gates. I thank you for your prayers and for your warmth
and acceptance. These are the first gifts of this new year for
which I am indeed grateful.
The melodies of the High Holydays are still in my mind
even as I look forward to the beginning of “Sing for Joy:
Finding Your Outer Voice.” Everyone is welcome to join
this class during which I will offer simple techniques that
will enhance your ability to sing. You need not read music
or even carry a tune, just come for the fun. As more of us
learn to sing with our hearts as well as with our voices, the
sound of our prayers will gain strength. Class meetings
are Mondays, November 3, 10 and 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
Melodies will be simple and should be familiar. People of
all ages have found this class to be fun and helpful.
I look forward to greeting you at our services and events
as this year continues. May the year 5769 bring you all that
you desire for yourself and for those you love.
L’Shalom,
The Future Belongs to the Young
Dear Members,
I am part of the small group of seniors
older than 70, a member of Har Sinai
for more than 60 years, and I treasure
many things about our heritage, but I
know our future belongs to the young
families, most of whom have recently
joined our membership.
With respect to our seniors, and
keeping in mind that we should have
services and programming that
reaches out to all segments of our
community, I will continue to push for
services, programming and music for
our young families.
I will continue to support preschool,
youth programs and religious school
as essential Har Sinai services. We must
continue to control costs, but, as a
full-service synagogue, I recognize who
we are and who we must always be.
4 | The Connection
Although it is an extreme challenge
to balance our finances pending
the elimination of our mortgage and
rebuilding of our endowment fund,
we must keep our preschool and
full-time youth director as part of our
commitment to young families. On
the first morning of Religious School,
September 7, a young mother
approached me to show me a photo
just taken of four children previously in
our preschool and united again in the
first grade of Religious School.
I have been part of an ongoing
debate about the budget issues
of class size and whether, without
donations, we can afford to keep
a full-time youth and family director
and whether the membership should
subsidize the preschool. I seek your
spoken and financial support to hold
on to these services for our families.
It is up to us who care about the
future of Har Sinai and want to leave
a lasting legacy for future generations
to financially commit to helping us find
the means to keep youth and family
programming at the forefront of our
mission statement.
Our success likely will be measured in
membership growth, and this increase
will depend on keeping families active
in attending services, receiving quality
Jewish education and values beyond
B’nai Mitzvah.
This is my hope for the future of Har
Sinai.
Howard M. Kahn
President

Dear Religious School Parents,
It is hard to believe that the holidays are over and we are well
into the Jewish New Year 5769. Our Sukkot and Simchat Torah
celebrations were wonderfully attended and a good time was had
by all.
Thank you for making our cookie dough and cake sale a success.
Remember to pick up your orders on Sunday, November 16,
following Religious School. Our trusty volunteers are anxiously
waiting to sort and help you with your orders.
I am delighted that our 4-year-old Ayzeh Kef program is up and
running. The children are having a wonderful learning experience
with Miss Mindy (Leiner) once again this year. It makes you smile
to see the little ones excitedly coming to religious school with their
older siblings.
On Sunday, November 23, the fourth- and fifth-graders will
be singing at our annual Barnes & Noble fundraiser. Make your
holiday gift list and shop after listening to the students sing.
Thanksgiving is approaching. With all that is happening in the
world, we should be thankful for the things we have—our family,
our friends, our health and much more. As you sit around the
table on Thanksgiving, think of and be thankful for those blessings
that you have and show your gratitude to God for sustaining you
on your journey through life.
ONE CAN
ONE COMMUNITY
Our Yom Kippur fast
lasts 24 hours.
The Community Crisis Center Food Pantry,
which serves Reisterstown, Owings Mills and
Glyndon, is in great need of nonperishable
food and toiletry items. We are asking
members to bring ONE can of food to Friday
Night Services, Tot Shabbats, and other Har
Sinai Events. If everyone does this simple
act, we can continue to help the Community
Crisis Center Food Pantry throughout the
year. The Social Action Committee will
be bringing over the donated items once a
month.
Hers could last a lifetime.
