2008-09 Cross Co u n t ry & Tr ac k a n d Field Ou t l o o k
The 2008 Hartford men’s cross country team will be led by sophomore
Jonas Hampton, the Hawks’ top-performer in 2007, Weston Melnik, the
5,000m school record holder, and senior Frederic Langford. Joining this
group of returners are a great class of freshmen distance runners, including
Andrew Chalmers, Patrick Murray, Eric Flaman, Alexander Welford,
Justin Ferreira, and Michael Russo. The newcomers have already made a
strong showing in the opening meets of the 2008 season and will continue
to improve the Hawks’ distance performances on the track during both the
indoor and outdoor seasons.
The Hartford men’s track and field team will be led by senior captains
Anthony Oluwanifise, Brien Woodaman and Langford. Oluwanifise is
currently the school record holder in long jump and triple jump for both seasons,
while Woodaman set the school record in the 35-lb weight throw last
season. Woodaman’s performance in the throwing events will be backed
up by senior Bill Foley and freshmen Trevor Brunell and James Gray in
the javelin. Senior Ryan Trupin, school record holder in the high jump, is also expected to contribute
again this year.
In the 400m and 500m long sprints, Eric Ciccone and Warren Lane will be expected to show strong performances
throughout both seasons. They will be joined by three members of the school record-setting
4x400m relay team from last spring – Matthew Le, Fawaz Al-Sudairi and Brandon Coleman.
In the short sprints, Stephan Jospitre, Chris Carr and Oluwanifise will be joined by newcomers Christian
Ehigiator, Nigel Nimoh, and Anthony Green. Nimoh will also compete in the hurdles along with freshman
Cody Adamson, sophomores Adam Wells and Bill Stochmal, and Langford.
The Hartford women’s cross country team looks to build upon last year as it returns Elizabeth Foster and
Stefanie Lombardi. The two senior captains have continued to lead the way for the Hawks as the 2008
season is underway. Foster returns to Hartford after training in Ireland over the summer and has led the
Hawks in all three meets to date, while lowering her personal best 5k to 18:33. Lombardi is currently the
school record holder in every distance event from the 1500m to the 5000m.
The Hartford track and field women's team is coming off an extremely successful 2007-08 campaign
where a total of 25 indoor and outdoor records were set. Foster and Lombardi will continue to lead the
distance runners during the indoor and outdoor seasons. They will be joined by sophomore Lea Godfrey,
freshman Larisa Woykovsky, and mid-distance sophomore standouts Nicole Dow and Erika Schramm.
Schramm is a school record holder in the outdoor 800m event.
A strong group of freshmen are expected to excel at the horizontal jumps,
including Kristalena Lamore, Miranda Wallace, Nicolle Adams, and Erica
Prino. Freshmen sprinters Kenterra Richardson and Lamore will join sophomore
Raquel Payne in the 55m and 200m dashes.
Performances in the hurdles will continue to be successful as the Hawks
return conference champion and school record-holder Kaycee Martinez.
Martinez, a track and field co-captain, is joined by Ariana Bass, who also
showed outstanding performances in the spring of 2008.
For the first time in the program’s history, the throwing events will be at its
strongest under the leadership of captain Kelly Drosnock (javelin). Drosnock
will be joined by sophomores Biliana Mihaylova and javelin school
record-holder Flake Gjonbalaj. Also expected to succeed in the throws
are discus school record holder Diana Christopoulos, Carolyn Grime, the
school record in the 20-lb weight throw, and freshmen Chelsea Lovell, Tiffany
Hyde, and Rebecca Perry.
Warren Lane • Eric Ciccone • Matthew Le • Fawaz Al-Sudairi
In the 2008 spring track and field season, four individuals
set the Hartford school record in the 4x400m event with
a time of 3:25.18. The team - Fawaz Al-Sudairi, Eric
Ciccone, Matthew Le and Warren Lane - will be returning
for the Hawks’ 2008-09 season with high hopes of
breaking their previously set school record.
In addition to the relay, each individual has enjoyed
personal success as a Hawk. Al-Sudairi has been a
consistent scorer in the indoor and outdoor 400m dash,
while sophomore Le has seen strong performances in the
mid-distance events. During his first year at Hartford,
Ciccone made an immediate impact, setting school records in the indoor and outdoor 400m, while scoring
consistently for the Hawks in the conference. Lane, an invaluable member of the men’s squad, placed fourth
at the indoor America East Championship, setting a school record in the 500m (1:05.32) as a rookie.
Despite the foursome’s vast diversity, they have been united in their common goal of breaking the school
record. They worked hard and pushed each other every day at practice and in meets. “We made a commitment
to each other to leave everything on the track,” said junior Al-Sudairi, in reflection of last season’s
squad. This year, the 4x400m team has set the bar even higher for the upcoming season and is confident
in setting new records.
University o f Hartford
Small Classes, Big Opportunity
At the University of Hartford, classes are small, but the list of academic offerings is not.
The University is a comprehensive, independent institution, offering educational and
career programs in 89 undergraduate and 33 graduate areas of study in its seven
schools and colleges. It prides itself on providing the intimacy of a liberal arts college
with the creativity and intellectual excitement of a university.
While the range of studies offered at the University is diverse, so, too, are the people.
Enrolled are 4,796 full-time undergraduates, 841 part-time undergraduates, and
1,653 graduate students, representing 45 states and 58 countries. The full-time
student-to-faculty ratio is 14:1.
Tradition
The University of Hartford dates back to 1877, when the first of its original three
schools was founded. The Hartford Art School (1877), Hillyer College (1879), and
The Hartt School (1920) joined in 1957 to form the University of Hartford.
The origins of the University can be traced back to the wife of Mark Twain. Mrs.
Samuel Clemens, along with Harriett Beecher Stowe of Uncle Tom’s Cabin fame,
formed an art society that later became the Hartford Art School.
Expansion
The University has undertaken several ambitious building projects over the past half decade. A $34-million Integrated
Science, Engineering, and Technology complex, which included major renovations to the adjacent Dana Hall (one of the
original buildings on campus), opened in 2005. On its heels, new turf athletics fields brought a much different look to the
opposite end of campus, benefitting students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community residents.
The new Renée Samuels Center opened in January 2007, providing the Hartford Art School with new space for its photography
and media arts programs.
In fall 2007, Hawk Hall, a five-story residential facility for first-year students and its adjacent Alumni Plaza, a new outdoor
gathering place for students, greeted students returning to campus.
Now open just a mile from the University’s main campus, the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center houses five
dance studios, four theatre rehearsal studios and two black box theatres. It is a vibrant center for dance and theatre
instruction and performances at one of the key gateways to the city of Hartford.
The University of Hartford also houses two public magnet schools on its campus—an elementary school for students from
Hartford and several neighboring towns and University High School of Science and Engineering, which saw its legacy
class graduate this past June.
Quality
The University prides itself on its growing academic reputation, best illustrated by a consistent year-to-year increase in
applications (more than 12,000 received annually) and selectivity (the University’s acceptance rate is lower than at any
time in its history). The educational experience takes place in small, supportive classroom environments.
Location
The charm of the suburbs and the opportunities of the city all come alive at the University
of Hartford. Situated on a 340-acre, wooded, suburban campus, the University
borders Hartford, West Hartford, and Bloomfield. Midway between Boston and New
York City, downtown Hartford, only five miles away, is gaining a name for itself.
Campus Activities
Numerous social, recreational, and entertainment alternatives exist for students on
campus. More than 100 groups, clubs, and organizations, including campus media,
student government, fraternities and sororities add to student life. The Campus Activities
Team (CAT) is a student-run organization whose sole purpose is to schedule
events for student enjoyment.
The University of Hartford has gained a national reputation for the quality of
cultural activities and fine-arts exhibits on its campus. The Hartt School and the
Joseloff Gallery of the Hartford Art School are highly respected. Lincoln Theater,
the Sports Center, and three auditoriums host numerous special.
a 21st-century university
Today’s University of Hartford has surpassed the founders’ original but modest
plans for a local university in Hartford, becoming instead a vibrant and growing
institution. The University of Hartford has become a university for the world.
In September of 2008, the National Collegiate Athletic Association announced
that Hartford track and field student-athlete Latasha Jarrett
was selected as the NCAA Division I Sportswoman of the Year.
Since 1999, the NCAA Sportsmanship Award honors student-athletes
who, through their actions in the competitive arena of intercollegiate
athletics, have demonstrated one or more of the ideals of sportsmanship.
To be nominated for the Sportsmanship Award, an individual or
team must have demonstrated consistently the values of caring, civility,
fairness, honesty, integrity and responsibility in his or her daily participation
in intercollegiate athletics.
Earlier this summer, the America East Conference named Jarrett as its
recipient of the 2008 Female Sportsmanship Award. Jarrett became
the second Hartford student-athlete to earn the award and the first
on the women's side. Former track and field teammate Chris Spivey
earned the distinction in 2006. In June 2008, nominees from independent
school finalists and conference offices, including Jarrett, were
evaluated by the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct.
The committee then selected one
male and female student-athlete from
each NCAA division as finalists. Jarrett
was their choice as the female Division
I representative.
Jarrett, a four-year member of the
track and field team and graduate student
at Hartford, has joined the 2008
cross country team for her final season
of eligibility as a collegiate athlete.
