What’s it like to work in your organization? Is it a place where people are<br />
clear on the organization’s goals <strong>and</strong> how their individual roles contribute?<br />
Are people encouraged to give their best effort to the job at h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> are<br />
they recognized for doing so? Do people feel committed to their team? These<br />
are important distinctions—ones that impact bottom line performance. We<br />
call it ‘organizational climate’.<br />
The organizational climate workbook (OCW) introduces managers to six<br />
organizational climate dimensions—clarity, rewards, st<strong>and</strong>ards, responsibility,<br />
flexibility, <strong>and</strong> team commitment. It provides managers with an opportunity<br />
to rate the climate they experience, to think about the climate they create for<br />
their team, <strong>and</strong> how they can improve on it.<br />
The climate exercise is really helpful:<br />

• to introduce the concept of organizational climate <strong>and</strong> the climate<br />
dimensions<br />
• to get managers thinking about ways to improve both the climate they<br />
experience <strong>and</strong> the one they create<br />
• in leadership <strong>and</strong> management <strong>development</strong> programs or within<br />
one-to-one coaching<br />
• alongside the managerial style workbook (MSW) to provide the bigger<br />
picture of managerial behavior <strong>and</strong> impact.<br />

Disclaimer: The OCW is not a diagnostic tool. For a comprehensive<br />
assessment of organizational climate, <strong>Hay</strong> <strong>Group</strong> recommends the<br />
organizational climate survey (OCS), an internet-administered, 180°<br />
assessment. The OCS can only be administered by a <strong>Hay</strong> <strong>Group</strong> consultant<br />
or an accredited professional.<br />
