Hutt Valley Biographical Index and Genealogies website www.hbig.gen.nz Wellington Independent 20 Mar 1860 The Militia The Militia was balloted for on Saturday. Two hundred men are required; but to make up for deaths and departures, three hundred names were drawn. Only the first available two hundred will be called upon for actual service. As the desire for information relative to the names drawn is very great, we publish the list kindly placed at our disposal by Adjutant Kirwan. The following is the copy of a circular now being issued, from which it will be seen that the first meet is to take place on Friday next. On Her Majesty’s Service, Wellington Barracks, March 17, 1860. Your name having been drawn for actual service in the Militia, you are hereby commanded to attend on Friday, 23 rd March, instant, at 12 o’clock, noon, at the lower Mount Cook Barracks. W. R. This List comprises a large number of names not inserted in the one at present in force, and all persons who from age, bodily infirmity, or any other cause desire to claim exemption should make a point of doing so. The List just formed is exhibited at the Police Office Wellington, and the Mechanics Institute Lower Hutt. Objections will be heard by the Bench at Wellington, on Friday next, the 30 th instant, between 10 and 4 o’clock. We also call attention to the report of an interview between a deputation from the Upper Hutt and Major Trafford. No doubt the Act gives very large powers to the Commanding Officer, but it does not follow that he will use them arbitrarily. We believe that in the present peaceful state of this province Major Trafford has every desire to make the burden fall lightly – as lightly as possible upon all; but especially on the inhabitants of the out districts. So far as the Act will allow, he will no doubt listen to any reasonable suggestions that may be made, consistent with the duty of providing for the possible, though not probable, contingency of defending the district. As a soldier he perhaps deems it his imperative duty to take time by the forelock, and thinks that now is the day for drilling, and not when circumstances may require effective service. While on this subject, we strongly urge the necessity for individuals being less bellicose in their conversation with the maories. They are very uneasy at the pakehas perpetually talking to them about fighting. A continual agitation of the subject may have the effect of gradually preparing them for it; whereas at present they desire only the most friendly relations with the settlers.
