This work was <strong>in</strong>itiated <strong>in</strong> 2001 at the <strong>in</strong>vitation <strong>of</strong> Sean Marron, then President<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> PT Asiatic Persada (Asiatic) <strong>oil</strong> <strong>palm</strong> plantation. <strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>itial year’s work that<br />

established the presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>tigers</strong> with<strong>in</strong> the <strong>oil</strong> <strong>palm</strong> concession <strong>and</strong> laid the<br />

foundations for the project was co-funded by Asiatic <strong>and</strong> the Zoological Society <strong>of</strong><br />

London (ZSL) <strong>and</strong> led by Robert Gordon with supervision by Dr. Chris Carbone. From<br />

2002 to 2006 Dr. Thomas Maddox has been runn<strong>in</strong>g the project <strong>in</strong> the field with jo<strong>in</strong>t<br />

supervision from Sarah Christie <strong>and</strong> Dr. Carbone at ZSL. Satrio Wajimukti worked as a<br />

counterpart from 2002-3 with Dolly Priatna jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g as project co-manager <strong>in</strong> 2004.<br />

Field work has primarily been carried out by Elva Gemita <strong>and</strong> Adnun Salampessy who<br />

both jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> 2003, as well as volunteer assistants from the University <strong>of</strong> Lampung,<br />

the University <strong>of</strong> Jambi <strong>and</strong> Gita Buana. All trapp<strong>in</strong>g work was taught by Bart Schleyer<br />

<strong>and</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>ary tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g was provided by Dr. John Lewis. Joseph Smith worked as a<br />

volunteer to help run the survey <strong>of</strong> Asialog. Permissions, support <strong>and</strong> fund<strong>in</strong>g were<br />

provided by the follow<strong>in</strong>g organisations:<br />

<strong>The</strong> Indonesian Institute <strong>of</strong> Science (LIPI) through the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Biology has been the sponsor for the project s<strong>in</strong>ce it began research<br />

activities <strong>in</strong> 2002 through Dr. Jito Sugarjito. Dr. Suyanto took over as the<br />

primary counterpart <strong>in</strong> 2006.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Indonesian Department <strong>of</strong> Forestry has been closely <strong>in</strong>volved with<br />

the project s<strong>in</strong>ce 2002, grant<strong>in</strong>g permission to work with animal radio<br />

collar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>and</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g representatives from the local forestry <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

(BKSDA) on an <strong>in</strong>formal secondment s<strong>in</strong>ce 2003.<br />

PT Asiatic Persada <strong>and</strong> their orig<strong>in</strong>al parent company, the<br />

Commonwealth Development Cooperation (CDC) provided <strong>in</strong> k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>and</strong><br />

logistical support from 2001-2006, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the provision <strong>of</strong> a purposebuilt<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice on site <strong>and</strong> twelve <strong>conservation</strong> scouts.<br />

PT Asialog controlled the logg<strong>in</strong>g concession <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this study <strong>and</strong><br />

k<strong>in</strong>dly gave permission for research to be carried out on their l<strong>and</strong>.<br />

21 st Century Tiger, jo<strong>in</strong>tly adm<strong>in</strong>istered by the Zoological Society <strong>of</strong><br />

London <strong>and</strong> Global Tiger Patrol, provided f<strong>in</strong>ancial support for 2002-3,<br />

2003-4, 2004-5 <strong>and</strong> 2005-6.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Save the Tiger Fund, adm<strong>in</strong>istered by the National Fish <strong>and</strong><br />

Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), provided f<strong>in</strong>ancial support between 2002-3<br />

<strong>and</strong> 2004-5.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rh<strong>in</strong>o <strong>and</strong> Tiger Conservation Fund, adm<strong>in</strong>istered by the US Fish<br />

<strong>and</strong> Wildlife Service, provided f<strong>in</strong>ancial support from 2004-2005.<br />

Wildlife Vets International (WVI) donated veter<strong>in</strong>ary equipment <strong>and</strong><br />

provided the services <strong>of</strong> veter<strong>in</strong>arian Dr. John Lewis.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Tufton Charitable Trust supported tiger <strong>wildlife</strong> radio collar<strong>in</strong>g work between 2003-5.<br />

BSI Travel provided flights between 2003 <strong>and</strong> 2005.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Charles 10 th Duke <strong>of</strong> Rutl<strong>and</strong> Memorial Trust provided fund<strong>in</strong>g for staff development<br />

<strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the UK <strong>and</strong> US <strong>in</strong> 2005 <strong>and</strong> 2006.<br />

Chess<strong>in</strong>gton World <strong>of</strong> Adventures provided veter<strong>in</strong>ary equipment through WVI.<br />
