HDSA Mission
The Society is a National, voluntary health organization dedicated to
improving the lives of people with Huntington's Disease and their families.
Our purpose is:
• To promote and support research and medical efforts to eradicate
Huntington's Disease.
• To assist people and families affected by Huntington's Disease to cope
with the problems presented by the disease; and
• To educate the public and health professionals about Huntington's
Disease.

Dear HDSA Supporters:
This has been a special year for HDSA. We’ve seen the FDA approve the first therapy
specifically for people with Huntington’s Disease and several new potential therapeutic targets
identified; a bill was introduced on floor of Congress to give well-deserved special status to
people with Huntington’s Disease by the Social Security Administration; we have seen greatly
increased coverage of HD and related subjects on TV shows and newspapers; and the Society
has expanded into new geographic areas and expanded its outreach with more than 130
support groups.
Thanks to the generosity and dedication of our donors, the Society was able to continue to
expand its services to our families, and HDSA was able to complete this past fiscal year with
a positive impact on our ledger.
As you read this, we are certain that you are aware of the financial pressures we all
face in the current economic climate. Therefore, we hope that you will see the strength and
importance of the HDSA programs of Research, Care and Education, and provide whatever
support you may to keep them moving forward during these difficult times. With the recent
research breakthroughs and promising substances working their way through the Drug
Discovery Pipeline, we feel an urgency to expand our programs and can only do so with your
support.
The Board and the staff of HDSA are dedicated to maintaining the Society’s ability to
deliver the programs our families need. Please help us to provide Help for Today and Hope

HDSA In Action
Research
This past year was an exciting period in the
history of HD research, with many drugs,
supplements, and genetic approaches moving
through the drug discovery pipeline, bringing
treatments closer to HD families. The progress
we have seen, as well as the confidence drawn
from the progress of the comprehensive strategic
plan for research point to many potentially positive
findings on the horizon.
HDSA wants to ensure that our families
always have access to the most current research
news and developments. Therefore, we have
updated the national website,
www. HDSA.org, with an extensive
research section that presents and
explains the latest findings from the
HDSA Coalition for the Cure and other
leading HD researchers. A research
pipeline graph available on the site
shows how far promising compounds
and genetic approaches have advanced
from preclinical work with animal models
to clinical trials with HD patients.
The chart is updated each time a
potential new treatment is identified or
developed and each time a new clinical
trial begins.
During this past year, the first
drug to successfully emerge from the
pipeline, Tetrabenazine, was finally approved for
the treatment of chorea. This is the first drug
specifically approved for people with Huntington’s
Disease by the FDA.
As more potential therapies worked their
way towards Clinical Trials, HDSA led a community
wide initiative designed to increase awareness of
the importance of clinical trials and to help recruit
potential participants. HDTrials.org is a special
website, where people can anonymously register to
learn about clinical studies and trials that take
place in their locale. When a new study or trial is
announced, members of HDTrials.org will receive
an email notification, describing the objective of
the trial, the basic qualifications to participate and
contact information for those interested in learning
more and volunteering to participate.
Basic research conducted by HDSA
Coalition for the Cure scientists continues to
identify new targets for the development of
treatments as well as biomarkers which can be
used to more precisely measure disease onset and
progression, thereby shortening clinical trials and
providing guidance as to when treatments
should be given to people with the mutated gene.
In addition, as key questions are being
answered about what goes wrong in Huntington’s
Disease, we are seeing new interest from
pharmaceutical companies in developing
treatments. This has resulted in the development
of high throughput assays to screen for
compounds that rescue the dysregulation of gene
transcription and for compounds that enhance
protein degradation and clearance.
With several compounds now in final,
Phase III trials, there is a strong possibility that
Huntington’s Disease will have its first disease
modifying treatment within the next few years. In
addition, we expect new and more efficient drugs
to be entering the research pipeline as a result of
the identification of new targets based on critical
basic research by HDSA Coalition for the Cure
scientists and other leading researchers, and
through our partnership with CHDI.

Care
The HDSA Center of Excellence Program
celebrated its 10th Anniversary this year. From
the initial Center at Emory University in Atlanta
Georgia, the program has expanded to 21 facilities
at top medical centers throughout the United
States. The Centers offer a unique range of services
to the person with Huntington’s Disease and his or
her family, including medical care, psychiatric care,
social services, physical and occupational therapy,
speech and swallowing therapy, nutritional counseling,
as well as genetic counseling and testing.
In the past year, the HDSA Centers of
Excellence saw more than 4,300 patients and their
family members. In addition to the testing,
counseling and medical management, the Centers
provide referrals to community-based services and
staff training at long term care facilities and other
institutions serving the HD community in their
locale. Each Center adapts its programs to fit the
needs of their local population. In some cases this
includes satellite medical support made necessary
by the distance between a patient and a facility, or
concern for a patient’s comfort during a longdistance
transport.
The Centers are also a spoke in the HDSA
resource wheel, distributing brochures and
information packets, hosting educational events
with Chapter and Affiliates and participating in
initiatives with other HD organizations.
The advancement of our knowledge
of HD and how to care for the patient were
among the prime reasons that the Center
Program was created. The Centers work in
tandem with HDSA chapters, affiliates, support
groups and regional offices to provide a seamless
national network of medical and social services to
the HD community, as part of the HDSA Care
Continuum.
HDSA remains committed to the Centers
of Excellence Program, and the extension of their
services beyond the Center walls, and current
patient coverage.
Education and Advocacy
One of the most important ways in which
HDSA provides support to the HD
community, is by providing access to the most
current and most beneficial information about
Huntington’s Disease. Therefore the Society
has become the primary source of medical
information; care and support resources; the
latest research news; event listings and other key
resources for the HD community.
Last year the HDSA website was
redesigned and to include enhanced sections on
research, clinical research, advocacy and available
resources, much attention was paid to make it an
easily navigable site which our families can
access easily, and intuitively find the information
they require.
HDSA creates print and multi-media
resources that cover all aspects of Huntington’s
Disease: including caregivers guides, information
on juvenile HD, best practices in areas such as

nutrition for a person with HD, guides on finding
long-term care facilities, and publications directed
to medical professionals. All publications are
available via download through the national
website, as well as in print.
In addition to these resources, the Society
holds holds an annual National Convention, and
each chapter and affiliate holds local or state
educational events. At these events symposia and
workshops are held, and people affected by HD
may network and learn more about local resources.
The HDSA National Convention, held in
Pittsburgh, PA was a major success, with over 600
attendees participating in the 7 educational
workshop tracks. For the first time, a special NYA
education day was added to the pre-Convention
Thursday schedule which included leadership
training for chapter and affiliate officers, and
professional training for chapter and Center of
Excellence social workers.
HDSA’s advocacy programs reached new
levels of success during the past fiscal year. After
many years of effort with other genetic-disease
focus non-profits, HDSA advocates were able to
celebrate the passage of the Genetic Information
Nondiscrimination Act (GINA), which creates
new protections against the misuse of genetic
information by health insurance companies and
employers.
Following upon the success with GINA,
the HDSA Advocacy program focused on
convincing the Social Security Administration to
update their their disability listings for HD, and
to obtain a waiver for the 2-year Medicare
waiting period for people disabled by HD. After
meeting with official of the Social Security
administration, HDSA embarked upon an effort
to enact legislation to enact these changes. and
in June, 2008, Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA) from San
Diego, California, introduced H.R. 6259, The
Huntington’s Disease Parity Act on the floor
of the House of Representatives. Thanks to
lobbying by HDSA advocates throughout the
U.S. other sponsors signed on, and while the
Bill did not reach the floor for a vote, it was
scheduled for and reintroduced to Congress by a
number of new co-sponsors as the Huntington’s
Disease Act of 2009.

Ways to Support HDSA Programs
Volunteer: HDSA depends on the participation of volunteers to make its programs possible. Serve on a
committee that is organizing an event, such as a walk-a-thon or hoop-a-thon or offer your services on
the day of the event; ask your employer or local retailer to sponsor an event; recruit your friends and
colleagues to create a team for an event; or solicit local businesses to donate their services or products
to offset the costs of holding a fundraising, educational or public outreach event.
Offer your skills and services: Your knowledge and experience can make a difference to your local
HDSA Chapter or Affiliate. In the past year, volunteers have helped upgrade chapter websites, videotaped
presentations, and provided other support services. Visit “Find HDSA in your Community” on
the national website and contact your local leaders to learn what types of assistance they need.
Become an HDSA Advocate: Become an active member of the HDSA Advocacy Team. Register in the
Advocacy Section of the HDSA website and help us move our advocacy initiatives forward.
Make a Direct Contribution: Visit the HDSA national website, www.hdsa.org and click on “Donate” on
the home page. This will take you to a secure page where you may make a general donation, or one for
research, care or education. If you prefer, you may print out the donation form and mail it to HDSA,

Create a Family Fund: Establish a Family Fund to honor your family or to remember a loved one. Join
with friends and relatives, and pool your resources, to make your donated dollars work harder than you
could individually.
HDSA Tribute or Memorial Gift: Honor a friend or loved one with an HDSA Tribute Gift, or honor the
memory of a loved one with an HDSA Memorial Gift.
Matching Gifts: Your employer or organization may be part of the HDSA Matching Gifts Program,
which doubles your donation. A list of participants is available on the HDSA website. If your employer
is not part of this program, please request that they join us.
HDSA Heritage Club: There are many ways to participate in HDSA’s Planned Giving Program; You
may remember HDSA in your will or life income Charitable Remainder and Annuity Trusts. Other financial
