POSITION AND SALARY:<br />

<strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Outreach</strong> <strong>Coordinator</strong> ; $35,000 P/A<br />

The salary given will be determined by <strong>the</strong> qualifications <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> appointee.<br />

LOCATION:<br />

Office <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Governor, Coastal Resources Management Office<br />

OVERVIEW:<br />

This position will serve as a coral reef outreach coordinator at <strong>the</strong> Coastal Resources Management<br />

Office. She/He will be responsible for implementing priority outreach-related aspects <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CNMI<br />

Coral Reef Protection Local Action Strategy, <strong>and</strong> communicating with, motivating <strong>and</strong> working with<br />

<strong>the</strong> public on coral reef <strong>and</strong> environmental issues.<br />

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:<br />

<strong>Education</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Outreach</strong> (40%)<br />

• Develop <strong>and</strong> implement outreach <strong>and</strong> education strategies for coral-related programs including<br />

permitting, enforcement, wetl<strong>and</strong>s, watershed protection, beach restoration, public access, <strong>and</strong><br />

non-point source pollution.<br />

• Develop interpretive, education <strong>and</strong> information materials, displays <strong>and</strong> programs for coral reef<br />

<strong>and</strong> coastal management issues.<br />

• Write articles for <strong>the</strong> newspapers, agency websites, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r media summarizing CNMI coral<br />

reef protection <strong>and</strong> CRMO coastal management efforts, accomplishments, <strong>and</strong> plans.<br />

• Help develop presentations <strong>and</strong> materials to be given <strong>and</strong> distributed at various local, regional<br />

<strong>and</strong> national meetings.<br />

Coral Reef Initiative Internship (20%)<br />

• Coordinate all details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> annual Coral Reef Initiative summer internship, including<br />

identifying mentors <strong>and</strong> intern projects, advertising <strong>the</strong> internship, organizing <strong>the</strong> interview <strong>and</strong><br />

hiring process, <strong>and</strong> coordinating group activities during <strong>the</strong> internship.


• Develop an annual report summarizing <strong>the</strong> summer internship, projects completed <strong>and</strong> lessons<br />

learned.<br />

Talakhaya Conservation Action Plan <strong>Outreach</strong> (40%)<br />

• Develop a survey to gauge public knowledge <strong>and</strong> perceptions regarding conservation issues on<br />

<strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Rota.<br />

• Recruit <strong>and</strong> train enumerators <strong>and</strong> coordinate implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> survey.<br />

• Analyze survey results <strong>and</strong> develop a final report, including recommendations for an education<br />

<strong>and</strong> outreach strategy to fur<strong>the</strong>r conservation on Rota.<br />

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:<br />

Graduation from an accredited college or university with at least a Bachelor's degree in any field plus<br />

two (2) years <strong>of</strong> experience in social science survey techniques. A Master's degree in a social science<br />

field can be substituted for <strong>the</strong> two years <strong>of</strong> experience.<br />

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:<br />

• Experience in interagency coordination, community organization, media relations, project<br />

management, group facilitation <strong>and</strong> problem-solving<br />

• Excellent writing, verbal, <strong>and</strong> computer skills<br />

• Experience with environmental education <strong>and</strong> outreach for a wide variety <strong>of</strong> audiences <strong>and</strong> a<br />

wide variety <strong>of</strong> topics<br />

• Willingness to travel as required<br />
