assessments are available to<br />
monitor development and help<br />
design individual programs for<br />

The program runs five days a<br />
week with occasional out of hours<br />

BRIEF OUTLINE OF BASIC<br />
PHILOSOPHY:<br />
When families and teachers<br />
work together the best learning<br />
outcomes are achieved by each<br />
child, and the most appropriate<br />
choice of communication<br />
mode is made to meet their<br />
learning needs.<br />
SELECTION CRITERIA:<br />
Families with children aged from<br />
birth to six years with hearing loss.<br />
LEVEL OF PARENTAL<br />
INVOLVEMENT:<br />
Parent involvement is crucial in all<br />
aspects of the services provided.<br />
Initially our aim is to work mainly<br />
with parents to assist them to<br />
enhance their infant’s or child’s<br />
development.<br />
FREQUENCY OF GROUP<br />
MEETINGS:<br />
Weekly parent group is available<br />
and occasional information<br />
evenings, school visits or family<br />
days are arranged as requested.<br />
Eastwood Facility, Eastwood Primary School<br />
BRIEF OUTLINE OF SERVICES:<br />
Trained teachers of the deaf<br />
work with students within the<br />
classroom, in small groups and<br />
individually to provide access<br />
to a primary curriculum, major<br />
concepts and English language<br />
development. Visiting specialists<br />
include an audiologist, technician<br />
and speech therapist. The facility<br />
also works with outside agencies<br />
according to need.<br />
TIME AVAILABLE:<br />
School hours are from 9.00<br />
to 3.30pm.<br />
SELECTION CRITERIA:<br />
A binaural sensorineural hearing<br />
loss of 40dB or greater.<br />
LEVEL OF PARENTAL<br />
INVOLVEMENT:<br />
Parents are warmly invited to be<br />
involved at all levels within the<br />
school. For younger children, daily<br />
communication is encouraged<br />

Term fees do apply and fee<br />
reductions are available.<br />

The Early Education Program<br />
offers many other extra cirrucular<br />
services. For more information<br />

$250. A moderate amount is also<br />
charged each term for learning<br />
activity fees (excursions, visiting<br />
performances and activities).<br />

A before and after school hours<br />
program is available at the school.<br />
This also operates on pupil free days.<br />

teacher aide (both deaf and<br />
hearing) support<br />
✽ Fortnightly visits from<br />
<strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Hearing</strong> to ensure<br />
children’s technological<br />
devices are at an optimal level<br />
✽ Speech pathology offered to<br />
all students at an individual<br />
and/or group level<br />
✽ Auslan classes are offered to<br />
all parents free of charge<br />
TIME AVAILABLE:<br />
Furlong Park is a Department of<br />
Education school and follows the<br />
same timetable as mainstream<br />
schools. School hours are 9.00 to<br />
3.15, Monday to Friday.<br />
SELECTION CRITERIA:<br />
40 dB bilateral, sensorineural<br />
loss. Some students who do<br />
not meet the above criteria are<br />
enrolled in special circumstances<br />
with authorisation granted by<br />
the Department of Education,<br />
Western Metropolitan Regional<br />

aims to provide deaf and hearing<br />

LEVEL OF PARENTAL<br />
INVOLVEMENT:<br />
All parents are encouraged to<br />
take an active part in their child’s<br />
education either by visiting the<br />
school, supporting class activities<br />
or being involved in the range of<br />
events and sessions hosted by the<br />
school for the parent and wider<br />
community. Parents who want<br />
their child to access individual<br />
speech pathology are also<br />
required to attend each session.<br />
FREQUENCY OF GROUP<br />
MEETINGS:<br />

are held at the beginning of<br />
School terms one and three.<br />
Other meetings are organised<br />
where necessary.<br />
