Welcome to the Cum Laude
Society: Hebron Chapter
by Jai Kyeong Kim ‘11
Established in 1906 by
Dr. Abram W. Harris, Director
of the Tome School
in Maryland, the Cum
Laude Society only offers
its memberships to the
students with superior
scholastic achievement,
honoring the world’s
high school scholastic
leaders. In terms of student
membership, each
Chapter can elect up to
courses the high school
offers.
This year, the Hebron
Chapter inducted four
students from the Junior
Class and eight students
from the Senior Class.
Inductees for the Class
of 2011 were Tom Cummings,
Polly Drown, Jai
Kyeong Kim, and Zack
Torrano. Inductees for the
Hebron Chapter in his
junior year. He went on
to graduate Summa Cum
Laude from Columbia
University and worked in
Scripps Research Institute
at LaJolla, California. After
receiving PhD in doctoral
studies of synthetic
organic chemistry, he was
awarded a post-doctoral
research position from
the National Institute of
The Day of
Silence
by Noelle Giguere ‘13
Staff Writer
The National Day of Silence,
a grass-roots, student-initiated
event, was established in
1996. Its intention is to make
schools safer, more accepting,
and understanding of
everyone in the community.
At Hebron Academy, the Gay-
Straight Alliance conveys this
same message. GSA has many
members who inform adults
and students in the community
of actions they can take to
make the school a safer place.
Hebron celebrated its annual
Day of Silence on April 23rd.
For this day the dress code
was set aside, and students
and faculty were allowed to
wear jeans and bright-colored
shirts. At morning meeting,
the GSA sang “Lean on Me” and
welcomed everyone to join in.
The song describes how everyone
is equal. Ultimately no one
should be uncomfortable with
his or her sexual orientation,
gender identity, or gender
expression.
The GSA also read quotations
about the Day of Silence written
by faculty and students.
These quotations varied from
why people feel strongly about
this day to how they were connected
to it directly. The readings
were very moving and
helped people understand
what the GSA and The Day of
Silence are trying to convey.
Later in the morning, the
GSA and anyone who wanted
to get involved met in the Science
Lecture Hall to talk further
about The Day of Silence.
They discussed why the day
was important and how great
it was to see so many people
involved. There was a banner
for everyone to sign and write
messages about their thoughts
on The Day of Silence.
The Day of Silence was a
great way to spread awareness
to everyone at Hebron
Academy. It not only informed
people about the importance
of acceptance, but also about
how they can make Hebron
Academy a better and safer
place.
10% of the members of
the Junior Class and 20%
of the members of the
Senior Class.
Hebron Academy started
the Hebron Chapter in
1923, as the 27th Chapter
in Cum Laude. In order
to remain a Cum Laude
chapter, the school must
send its academic profile
to the National Cum
Laude Organization every
ten years. The academic
profile includes what colleges
the students will
attend and what level of
Class of 2012 were Ben
Blais, Weisan Jiang, Seung
Woo Kim, Brent Landry,
Brian McDonald, Hoin Na,
Nick Stuer, and Tian Yang.
Traditionally, Hebron
Academy invites a speaker
for the induction ceremony.
This year, Dr. Noah
Burns gave the speech. Dr.
Burns is the son of school
physician Dr. Charles Burns
and English teacher Carnie
Burns. Graduating from
Hebron Academy in 2000,
when he was awarded the
Hebron Cup, Dr. Burns was
inducted into Cum Laude
Health in the Department
of Chemistry and Biology
at Harvard University. Sincerely
welcoming Hebron
Cum Laude inductees, Dr.
Burns told them, “Go out.
Explore!”
Bible Study
By Yena Kang ‘12
Staff Writer
On a Sunday afternoon in May, people
gathered at Ms. Barefoot’s house for Bible
Study, the final one of the year, the last
one for the seniors.
Ms. Barefoot, Chair
of the Fine Arts
and Music Department,
has led
weekly Bible Study
since she came
to Hebron last
year. The weather
was sunny, so
we decided to
eat outside; Ms.
Barefoot cooked
hamburgers and
hotdogs for us.
After eating, we talked about our week
and how God has always been there for
us. We had special ‘Words of Wisdom’ for
Seung Woo and Sangil who are graduating.
We shared our favorite bible verses
with them, Joshua 1:9 and Proverbs
25:11. By holding on to these verses, our
seniors will be brave as they go forward
with their new lives. The right word at the
right time is like a golden apple in silver
jewelry, and good words for people bring
good people to
them.
We ended
Bible Study
with Ms. Barefoot
praying
for the graduating
seniors.
We prayed that
veven though
they face hard
circumstances
photo by Soo Yeon Kim ‘12 when they
leave, God will
lead them in life. We prayed for them
to be challenged in many good ways so
they can grow more every day, to step
into shining futures.
