the heat. She closed
by emphasizing the
need to be willing
to risk failure—in
order to “do extraordinary
things in our
young lives.”
“We have four
more years to build
on ourselves, to
fail epically, to get
second chances, to
be wrong and boisterous,
and have it
chalked up to our
youth, and after
that, we take on
responsibilities that
start to box it in, to
provide less room
for error. I guess
what I’m saying,
against all the advice
that we’ve grown up
with, against what
I’m sure our parents
are thinking right
now, is this: Please
mess up.”
Awards for excellence
were then
presented in various
Hebron Academy
hosted its annual blood
drive held in the Lepage
Fine Arts Center on
Monday October 18,
2010. Ms. Ferrenbach
arranged the
blood drive with the
Red Cross and successfully
hosted the
event. She put strenuous
effort into gathering
donors to give
blood and volunteers
to help out with the
donation. Fifty-six
students, faculty, and
staff members signed
up to donate blood,
contributing nine pints
more than the previous
year. There were many
first time donors, easy
to spot by their nervous
award, The Hebron
Academy Cup, was
awarded to Valedictorian
Emma Larkin
Leavitt, who closed
the ceremony.
“We’re together
now, but we’ll shift,
we’ll drift; we are
our own personal
panacea, we’re sitting,
but let’s dance
in our heads. Let’s
scream. Let’s feel
the moment down
to the threads in
our shoes, because
it’s all we have
left to do.” In her
closing statement,
Emma referred
to Doctor Seuss.
“There’s no limit
to how much you’ll
know, depending
how far beyond
zebra you go. Let’s
commence.”
faces among people
lined up to give blood.
The actual donation
process took only about
ten minutes but contributors
were required
to stay for fifteen minutes
after the donation
to get some snacks and
refreshments in order
to bring their sugar level
back to normal. Some
people could not meet
the donation requirements
and were unfortunately
not able to
participate in the donation.
The requirements
are that donors must
be healthy and over
seventeen years of age,
or sixteen with parental
consent, and weigh a
minimum weight of
110 pounds. For next
year’s blood drive,
Health Services recommend
keeping
your iron up, staying
hydrated, and having
a healthy meal prior
to donating (don’t
forget to bring an ID).
This years donors
deserve a commendation.
Those who participated
in the blood drive
felt good about their
pint of blood being able
to save the lives of three
people.
