SUWANEE, Ga. - In exclusive balloting by SCAC women's head basketball coaches, defending league champion
DePauw University and Trinity University were tabbed as preseason favorites to capture the SCAC Eastern Division
and Western Division championships respectively for the second consecutive year.
In its final season as a member of the SCAC, DePauw headlined the annual poll of head coaches and is favored to win
the SCAC title. Head coach Kris Huffman and her Tigers tallied 10 of 12 first place votes to go along with 120 points to
take the top spot.
Centre (107 points) and Birmingham-Southern (75 points) look to give DePauw all it can handle in the East. Rounding
out the division was Rhodes College (65 points), Oglethorpe University (41 points) and Sewanee: The University of
the South (15 points).
The Indiana Tigers look for the program's tenth SCAC championship in 2010-11. DePauw won league titles in 1998-99,
1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2003-04, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2009-10.
In the SCAC Western Division, Trinity tallied 100 points with one first place vote while Hendrix College (93 points, 1 first
place vote) and Austin College (55 points) follow Trinity. Head coach Amie Bradley is attempting to guide the Trinity
Tigers to their first SCAC title since the 2004-05 season.
Both Hendrix and Austin College welcome new head coaches as Emily Cummings arrives in Conway after three previous
years at LaGrange College while Michelle Filander arrives in Sherman after spending last year at Washington and
Jefferson College in the Presidents Athletic Conference.
Colorado College (46 points) looks to return to the SCAC Tournament under third year head coach Liz Doran after
missing out last year for the first time since the CC Tigers joined the SCAC.
Rounding out the rest of the Western Division is Southwestern University (45 points), and 2011 SCAC tournament host
Millsaps College (28 points).
Austin College
Kangaroos
The Austin College women’s basketball team opens up a new era with first year head
coach Michelle Filander in the 2010-2011 season, and despite the challenge Filander
will have in replacing departed senior and SCAC Player of the Year Katy Williams along
with fellow All-SCAC performers Amber Stafford and Kayla Redden from a team that
went 18-8 last season, the ’Roos look to have all of the pieces in place to once again
make some noise in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference West Division this
season.
The ’Roos will be led this season by returning starter Spenser Cruikshank along with
Shayna Clardy and Kersti Marusich, who split time starting last season. Cruikshank, a 5-
10 senior forward, averaged 5.1 points and 5.8 rebounds and added 63 blocked shots,
including 41 against SCAC competition last season. Marusich was the team’s second
leading scorer, averaging 10.0 points-per-game and increased her scoring to 11.5
points-per-game against SCAC competition last season. Marusich hit on 45.5% of her
threes in conference play last season.
Clardy started 11 games before an injury shortened her season but still finished third on
the team with a scoring average of 8.5 points-per-game. Clardy boasts tremendous
range on her jumper and last season connected on 34.8% of her three pointers and
handed out 29 assists on the year.
Courtney Kenisky assumes the lead guard role vacated by Stafford this season, and last
year appeared in 25 games while scoring 4.0 points-per-game and handing out 40
assists. Kenisky hit on 38.8% from down town for the year, proving to be yet another
threat from beyond the arc for Filander this season. Another deep threat is Angeleena
Young, a junior guard who connected on 41.5% of her three pointers last year, including
48.0% against conference opponents.
Erica McDaniel and Allison Taylor also return in the post after each getting significant
playing time last season, with McDaniel averaging 3.8 rebounds-per-game and Taylor,
who provided a boost of energy coming off the bench last season, takes on a much
larger role this year. The ’Roos will also be looking for increased contributions from
sophomores Gwen Seale and Athena Padgett this year.
In addition to the returning talent on this year’s squad, Filander will also be counting on
several first year performers to contribute early, including post player Brooke Melton and
swing forward Erin Riley. Melton is expected to pick up some of the slack in replacing
Williams, the SCAC’s all-time leading rebounder, while Riley has the size to play in the
post and the skill set to do some damage on the perimeter and can play multiple
positions on the court.
The ’Roos face the tough task of replacing one of the most decorated senior classes in
Kangaroo history, but with a strong returning core along with an influx of incoming talent
the team will look to once again challenge for the SCAC West Division title in 2010-2011.

2010-11 Preview
Birmingham-Southern
College Panthers
For the BSC Women’s Basketball team, the transition to Division III has been a fairly
seamless one, as the Panthers have posted a winning record each year since 2007. Just
a year ago, the Panthers fought their way to 13-12 record, and with two seniors ready to
lead the way in 2010, the team is poised for another great run.
Under the direction of head coach Brad Hodge, the program has made consistent strides
each year since joining the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, and with a strong
blend of upperclassmen, coupled with a huge sophomore class with plenty of game
experience, this squad will sneak up on no one.
“Over the past two seasons we have had two large freshmen classes that were talented,
but young and inexperienced on the college level,” Hodge said. “Unlike last year, we
have much more certainty of what to expect and better understanding of our own
strengths and weaknesses. Now we have the experience to go with the talent and they
understand the expectations, maintain encouragement, and are very competitive with
one another.”
Leading the way for the Panthers is Second-Team All-SCAC selection forward Alex
Adams, who led the Panthers in scoring just a year ago with 12.2 points per game.
Adams is a threat from behind the arc and can make the big shot in the lane, as she will
look to help pace the Panther offense again this season.
Running the offense efficiently is always a key component, and having a point guard with
plenty of experience is a crucial factor to a team’s success. The Panthers have that in
junior Sam Davidson, who dished out 60 assists in 2009, while chipping in 6 points per
game while leading the team in field goal percentage. Helping out Alex Adams down low
is Ashton Spurgin, who tallied 13 blocks last season.
While having only two seniors could sound like a bad thing, the impact this duo has had
is second to none. Katelyn Wilson and Jamie Key have been with the Panthers since
2007 and have been through it all in their time on the Hilltop.
Wilson led the team in three-point shooting in 2010, and has been a significant presence
on the court for the Panthers. Key has been a terrific team player in her time on the
Hilltop, and her ability as a player and a leader has not gone overlooked. “Katelyn is a
vocal leader,” Hodge said. “Her strong voice is reflective of her strong, determined
mindset. Jamie, on the other hand, is a little quieter but gives great effort all the time.
Jamie always leads by example and I have seen an improved energy level from her
since she was a freshman. These seniors have been on the road trips, seen the best
teams in the conference, and know what it takes to be competitive in this league.”
One thing that should stick out this year is the increase in competition, which should help
prepare the Panthers for the always stout SCAC slate. A game of particular interest is
with in-state Troy University, a Division I program. Playing a team like Troy will certainly
pose a challenge, but when the conference schedule opens up, the Panthers will be
more than battle tested.

Centre College
Colonels
Following another outstanding season the Centre women’s basketball team will look to
continue its recent success in the 2010-2011 season. The Colonels posted their first
consecutive winning seasons since 1999-2000 and 2000-2001, and also recorded their
most wins in a season since the 2000-2001, finishing with a 19-8 overall and record and
12-4 mark in the SCAC. Centre, which graduated three seniors, will return several key
players this year, including three starters from last year’s squad.
Junior Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) will be relied upon by the Colonels this season
as she was named to the All-SCAC first team a year ago. The junior guard finished last
season ranked in the top five in five different categories in the SCAC, including second
in assists (4.7 apg) and steals (2.3), and third in scoring (16.4 ppg).
Junior Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) was named to the third team All-SCAC after a
successful season on the interior for the Colonels. Huter finished the season fourth in
the league in both field goal percentage (.507) and blocked shots (2.4 bpg) and was
seventh in rebounding (7.7 rpg). The junior also scored 11.6 points per game last
season.
Seniors Amanda Stovall (Louisville, Ky.), Angela Tronzo (Bardstown, Ky.), and
sophomore Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) will also play key roles in the upcoming
season for Centre. Stovall, a two-year starter, averaged 7.8 points per game, while
Tronzo and Benham combined to average 11.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game off
the bench.
Last season the Colonels led the conference in field goal percentage (.425) and field
goal percentage defense (.349) and were second in the SCAC in scoring margin (+9.8).
In addition, Centre advanced to the championship game of the SCAC Tournament for
the first time during the SCAC era.
“We are excited about the upcoming season and feel very fortunate to return three
starters and several key reserves from last year’s team. This wealth of experience will be
a great help to our team as we will have people learning different roles and
responsibilities than they had last year. We know we will have growing pains early as
this team gains valuable experience,” said head coach, Wendie Austin-Robinson.
“Our non-conference schedule is very challenging as well, and this will prepare us for
conference play. We have great senior leadership to help guide us through the year and
are hoping for a very competitive and deep team come tournament time,” Austin-
Robinson finished.
Centre will open up the 2010-2011 season on Monday, November 11 at 6:00 p.m.
against Maryville in Maryville, Tenn.

2010-11 Preview
Colorado College
Tigers
Colorado College will be significantly improved from the team that dropped eight of its last nine games and finished the 2009-10 season
with a 12-13 record.
These Tigers have experience. They’ve added size. And most importantly, they have confidence.
With three starters and nine letter winners returning, led by junior captain Becky Luetjen, a second-team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic
Conference selection, CC is confident it has what it takes to finish near the top of the Western Division and return to the league’s postseason
tournament.
“They are shooting big,” head coach Liz Doran said. “They want to make the conference tournament and go in as a No. 1 or 2 seed. We
were 12-13 last year, but we weren’t out of many of those games. They remember how close they were last year and believe they are
better this year. Everybody on the team came back a better player than when they left.”
Without question, Luetjen is the player that makes the Tigers go. She finished fourth in the conference in scoring, averaging 16.4 points per
game, and in rebounding at 8.8 per game. Luetjen also finished in the top 10 in steals (2.0) and blocked shots (1.2).
The challenge for Luetjen during her third season as a starter will not be to increase her statistical output, but rather help her teammates
increase their production as CC strives to become a more balanced team.
“The biggest measure of Becky’s success this year will be whether she can make the people on the court with her better,” Doran said. “I
don’t know that we’ll see her statistics make a big jump one way or the other. I wouldn’t be surprised to see her scoring go down and her
assists go up. She wants to win more than score.”
Fortunately, several players have the necessary skills and experience to contribute at the offensive end of the court.
Senior guard Alyssa Aldaz averaged 9.8 points per game last year and exploded for a career-high 32 during a come-from-behind 74-67
victory at Johnson & Wales University. She also was second on the team with 63 assists and third with 37 steals, both of which were singleseason
highs.
Junior guard Emily Wattman-Turner, the Tigers’ top on-ball defender, averaged 7.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game.
“Alyssa shows flashes of brilliance,” Doran said. “You have to be able to score as a point guard, but she needs to be a true point guard who
creates scoring opportunities for her teammates and spot-up shooters. She could have a great senior season.
“Emily is a good three-point shooter and we want her to shoot more during the flow of the game. As our best defender, she gets the
toughest assignment every game and she’s on the floor when we need a stop. This could be a break-out year for her.”
The Tigers have depth in the backcourt thanks to the return of juniors Jenn Knapp and Jordy Stephenson, along with sophomores Marissa
Gradoz and Hannah Hoopingarner. Knapp and Stephenson score most of their points from the three-point line, while Gradoz and
Hoopingarner excel in the up-tempo game by capitalizing on turnovers to score points.
Colorado College should see an improvement along the baseline, thanks to the return of sophomore Kalli Kemling and Sarah Gunkel.
Kemling averaged 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game before suffering a foot injury in early January. The Tigers were 7-4 with her on the
court to begin the season and just 5-9 the rest of the season. A year of experience will help Gunkel improve upon her averages of 1.8
points and 1.3 rebounds per game.
“Kalli is really tough to defend,” Doran said. “She’s one of our best three-point shooters and one of our best drivers. Kalli is relentless on the
boards and has a nose for the basketball. She had a hard time sitting out and that inspired her to work harder in the preseason and over
the summer.
“Sarah is a natural athlete who played every sport. Now she’s focused on being a better basketball player and she is playing with more
confidence.”
The Tigers also will add five new faces and one old one.
Senior guard Casey Drillete re-joins the program after taking two years off, while sophomore forward Sydney Leichliter arrives after
spending the last year at Wake Forest playing club basketball. The true freshmen are guards Olivia Hart and Nichole Monhait, and forwards
Gracie Rennecker and Erin Slay.
“Sydney is not listed as 6-foot, but she plays so much taller,” Doran said. “She’s playing the biggest of all of our kids on the inside. We’ve
definitely added some height in Erin and Gracie, our two 6-foot freshmen, and Sarah Gunkel, who has been playing a lot better.
“We’re taller than we have been in years past, but we’re still going to try to get up and down the court and do a lot of the same sort of things
on offense. We’ll still feature some small lineups, but we’ll have the luxury of being able to go big when we need to.”
Colorado College opens the season on Nov. 17 against Division II Mesa State College, then is host of a pair of tournaments before
beginning conference play on Dec. 3 at Hendrix College.
Despite nine of 16 conference games on the road, Doran is confident the experience from last year will pay off this season.
“Little things made a big difference in games we lost,” she said. “All of our returning players have significant experience. That should help
us play with confidence during the pressure moments when games are on the line.”
This year’s Tigers are confident they can handle the pressure and will be playing on Feb. 26 in the first round of the SCAC Tournament.

Tigers
Coming off a 26-4 season, a seventh straight NCAA tournament appearance and
the ninth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title in 12 years, DePauw
returns 10 letterwinners including three starters. The Tigers enter the season
ranked 10 in the USA Today ESPN Division III Top 25 Coaches’ Poll and 12 th by
D3hoops.com.
DePauw returns all three starters from the backcourt including seniors Brooke
Osborne and Katie Mathews and sophomore Kate Walker.
Osborne averaged 8.3 points per game last year and hit a team-high 62 threepointers
while shooting 36.5 percent from beyond the arc. Mathews, a third team
all-SCAC choice in 2009, averaged 8.0 points last year and led the squad with 44
steals. Walker ran the point in her rookie campaign while averaging 7.2 points
and a team-best 2.9 assists.
Sophomore Maddie Radcliff as well as freshmen Ali Ross and Anne Mullen will
provide depth at the point as well as Mathews at times.
Senior Lauren Goff, junior Kathryn Denbow, sophomores Lindsay Vandivier and
Kathleen Molloy and Ross will battle at the other two guard spots.
Goff averaged 6.5 points per game last year and knocked down 50 three-pointers,
while Denbow averaged 3.1 points. Vandivier and Molloy each earned letters in
their first seasons and saw time off the bench.
The Tigers lost two starters (Emily Marshall and Jenna Fernandez) from last year
and each started all 30 games at the two forward spots.
Junior Katie Aldrich came off the bench and was a third team all-SCAC choice
last year while averaging 9.3 points and 4.6 rebounds and shooting over 53
percent from the floor. Sophomore Ellie Pearson also played every game in the
backcourt and averaged 3.3 points and 5.4 rebounds. Providing depth at forward
are freshmen Leah Ross, Alex Gasaway and Erin McGinnis.

Hendrix College
Warriors
First year head coach Emily Cummins looks to continue the Warriors winning ways as the squad opens its 2010-11 season with
an exhibition game on Friday evening against cross-town foe University of Central Arkansas. The Warriors return to the court after
an outstanding 20-5 season in 2009-10.
Cummins enters the season as the Warriors’ third coach in three years and will look to build upon the team’s successful campaign
last year. She will likely call upon her winning experience as a player at Wilmington College to help with the transition into a
successful Hendrix program. The Warriors earned their first SCAC West Division crown a year ago, while their 20-5 record tied
for fourth in program history and their 13-3 conference mark ranks fourth all-time.
“We had a tremendous year in 2009-10 with most of last year’s players coming back, including one of the league’s best players in
Christina Byler,” said Cummins. “I believe the level of success they achieved last year is something that I am fortunate to take
over and build on for this year. Our players understand that the same level of success will not just be handed to them. I think with
our work ethic and the direction we are heading in now, we should be a conference contender this year.”
Cummins had an outstanding career with the Lady Quakers, ending with a NCAA D-III National Championship her senior year.
Her senior season was preceded by two National Tournament appearances that included trips to the “Elite Eight” and “Sweet 16”
in 2002 and 2003, respectively. Cummins also won three OAC Championships over her four years and was named Most
Valuable Player of the NCAA D-III Sectional Tournament in 2004.
“One of the things we have really focused on in the first couple months of practice is our defense. One of the goals we have had
for this season is to get the best out of each player every day. I think if we do that, all other goals will take care of themselves. If
we play solid half court defense then our offense is going to come along with it.”
Hendrix returns arguably the top player in the conference in senior forward Christina Byler. The Little Rock, Ark. native averaged
a league-best 17.3 points per-game and ranked in the top five in rebounding (9.1 - 3rd in SCAC), free throw shooting (90.2
percent - 1st) and 3-point shooting (36.6 percent - 4th). Byler was an All-SCAC First Team, All-SCAC Tournament Team and
D3Hoops.com All-South Region selection in her third season with the Warriors.
“One of the first things I noticed about Christina when I first got to Hendrix is that she works harder than any player on the court. If
she is injured and can not get on the court, she is in the weight room or shooting baskets by herself. She was one of the first
players to come in and watch game film with me, so I knew that if I could get her on board with me and my style of coaching she
could help implement that to the rest of the team. So far she has showed outstanding leadership off the floor and I am looking
forward to seeing what she can do come game-time.”
The Warriors also return a strong group of eight juniors, led by 2009-10 All-SCAC Honorable Mention winner Anna Roane.
Samantha Devlin, Jordan Henderson, Avery Roller and Caty Hensy all saw solid minutes on the court last year. Monica Sitzer
returns after seeing limited minutes off the bench, while Katy Ashley-Pauley and Erin McKinney come back after missing out on
the entire 2009-10 slate. Senior guard Wyvonne Hawkins also returns to the squad after taking the past two years off to
concentrate on her studies.
“Our juniors bring a great deal of experience to the team. After watching game film from last year and seeing them live in practice,
I think they have matured a lot of the summer. They all bring phenomenal leadership skills to the team, whether it is being vocal
or leading by example. All of our juniors complete the circle of what we are trying to accomplish as a successful program.”
Roane started all but one game last year, ranked second on the team with 89 field goals (44 3-pointers), averaged 10.5 points
per-game and made 59 assists. Devlin and Henderson will use their speed to get to the rim and give opponents fits on defense as
the duo combined for 31 steals and 89 assists a year ago. Roller will remain as a threat on the perimeter after shooting 21-of-62
from behind the arc last year and Hensy will continue to dominate the paint after ranking third on the team with 79 boards.
Second year assistant coach Krista Goss provided Cummins with another talented crew of newcomers. Bailey Ott, Jamie Tate,
Abigail Nickle and Katie Coughran have made an immediate impact on the squad and will push the upperclassmen for playing
time as the season continues.
“I could not ask for four better freshmen to have on our team. They are a well-rounded group that works hard, listens and does
everything we ask. One of the things all coaches worry about is whether or not the newcomers can meet the demands of the
college game as they transition from the high school level, and our freshmen absolutely have met those demands.”
Hendrix tips off its regular season at home on Monday, Nov. 15 against East Texas Baptist University at 6 p.m. CT on Garrison
Court. The Warriors will then travel to Greenville, Ill. to compete in the Tip-Off Classic against Greenville College and
Westminster College on Nov. 19 and 20, respectively. The Warriors return to Conway for back-to-back contests against
University of the Ozarks and Rust College on Nov. 22 and 23.
Hendrix opens SCAC play against West Division foe Colorado College on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. in Grove Gymnasium. Austin College
also comes to town the same weekend on Dec. 5 for a 1 p.m. affair.

2010-11 Preview
Millsaps College
Majors
The Millsaps women’s basketball team is looking to improve on their 1-24 result of a year ago with a new coach and a new outlook.
Coach Chuck Winkelman was named the tenth coach in program history in May, bringing 25 years of experience to the job.
“I want to develop a program with a sense of purpose here at Millsaps and get the women back to the success they have had in
the past,” Winkelman said. “Millsaps has always been a special place for me and I have a unique experience having coached in
the conference previously.” Coach Winkelman knows what it takes to win in the SCAC, having led Hendrix to three SCAC
Championships and three runner-up finishes with three trips to the NCAA Tournament from 1995-2004.
Coach Winkelman’s first team is, understandably, young with junior forward Janice Okeke (Jackson, Miss. / Murrah HS) the only
upperclassman on the nine-woman roster. The Majors’ starter missed last season due to reconstructive knee surgery. She has
worked hard in the off season to get back into playing form and learning the new system under Coach Winkelman. “Janice has
shown tremendous effort and intensity at both ends of the floor that makes everyone around her better; she will be an important
key in the rebuilding of our program.”
Joining Okeke in the front court is sophomore forward Shante Morton (Eupora, Miss. / Eupora HS). Shante led the Majors in
scoring last season with 365 points (15.9 points per game) in 17 starts. As such, Coach Winkelman has high expectations for
Shante this season, “Shante has all the tools to be an All-Conference player in the SCAC, improved conditioning and motivation
will help her be a big-time ‘producer’ instead of someone with great ‘potential’.”
Freshman Alexis Guice (Monroe, La. / St. Frederick HS) will challenge for minutes right away. “Alexis always goes hard and has a
super attitude” according to Winkelman. “She loves to play and that dedication keeps her working hard to always improve her
game.”
Sophomore small forward Kristin Salmon (Fayetteville, Ark. / Fayetteville HS) started 19 games as a freshman last season,
scoring 171 points. She is the team’s best perimeter shooter with 30 three-pointers last year. “Kristin wins everyday which will take
her far this season,” Winkelman said, “she has great basketball sense and works hard on defense making her an asset on both
ends of the court.”
Carra Cokrell (Bolden, Miss. / Tupelo Christian HS) will also compete for minutes right away. Coach Winkelman noted how “she
has pushed herself this fall and competes hard in practice every day.”
Elizabeth Sigafoose (Long Beach, Miss. / Christian Collegiate Academy) returns for her sophomore season at guard for the
Majors. She was one of only three players last season to see time in all 25 games, averaging 13.6 minutes per game. “Elizabeth
has a knack for getting the ball in the basket and she continues to work hard daily to improve her game,” according to Winkelman.
Joining her in the backcourt is the Majors’ other returning 25-game player from last season, sophomore Lovie Love (Mobile, Ala. /
W.P. Davidson HS). Love is “a great ball stopper” ranking second on the team last year in steals with 31. Coach Winkelman notes
that “Lovie has worked hard in the off season to adjust to a multiple offensive and defensive system.” That hard work could pay off
big for the Majors with Lovie’s speed and tenacity.
The Majors will have a new point guard this season as freshman Shatoya White (Houston, Texas / North Shore HS) begins her
Millsaps career. She “studies the playbook harder than anyone on the team” according to Winkelman and will have ample
opportunities to show what she can do early in the season.
Sharing duties at the point will be sophomore Sarah Spann (Jackson, Miss. / University Christian School). Sarah averaged 24.8
minutes per game last season in 16 appearances. She led the team in assists with 40 and had 19 steals as well. “Sarah is a great
teammate who loves the Majors and has the team’s and program’s best interest at heart.”
That sense of team will be important for the Majors this season with such a small roster. Everyone will have to contribute and pull
together to make this season a success, especially with the strong level of competition they will face.
There are just five games on the schedule before the conference season gets underway, and three of those will be on the road.
The Majors will open with NAIA Dillard University out of New Orleans at home before traveling across town to take on the
Mississippi College Choctaws. They will return home to face a tough University of Dallas team before heading out again for two
games in two days at Huntingdon College and then at Rust College.
Once that stretch concludes the schedule shifts straight into SCAC play. The Majors will open the conference schedule at home
with Austin College on December 3rd with Colorado College to follow on the 5th. Austin is always near the top of the SCAC West
standings, and the Tigers were the only team the Majors beat last season, so both games should be a good early test for Coach
Winkelman’s team.
The Majors will also have to travel to East Division powers DePauw and Centre this season. The Tigers and Colonels finished
one-two in the East last year, with DePauw taking the conference championship and the trip to the NCAA’s in the Hangar Dome.
The Hangar Dome will once again serve as host for the SCAC Basketball Tournaments as the top Division III programs from
around the country will battle it out for the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The eight
team tournament will begin February 25 and continue through the 27th when both the men’s and women’s champions will be
crowned. This will be the second year in a row that Millsaps has hosted the tournament in Jackson.

2010-11 Preview
Oglethorpe University
Stormy Petrels
After four consecutive 20-win seasons the Stormy Petrels women's basketball team was hit hard
by graduation and injuries in 2009-2010 and struggled through some growing pains on their way
to a 10-16 overall record. Having lost 95% of their scoring and rebounding from the school-best
27-4 campaign in 2008-2009 the squad was expected to hit some bumps in the road but now,
after earning their stripes in some hard fought SCAC competition, the team is ready to rise back
up on the strength of returning eight core players and adding five newcomers to the mix. With
valuable experience under their belt, the 2010-2011 women's basketball team looks to climb back
to the top of the SCAC ranks and make a run at returning to basketball's Promised Land: the
NCAA Tournament.
Head Coach Ron Sattele, beginning his seventh season at the helm of the Stormy Petrels, will
look to get the 2010-2011 squad back to playing the high scoring, up tempo offense that led
Oglethorpe to 96 victories from 2005-2009. While this year's squad has the experience, skill and
speed needed to climb the scoring charts in conference, it also has an element the team lacked
during its hey-day: a low post presence. The Petrels led the conference in defensive rebounding
(29.8 rpg) last season and were also fourth in offensive rebounding (14.8), demonstrating their
size and tenacity in the paint. Additionally, Oglethorpe led the SCAC in blocked shots at 5.8 per
game which only two other schools (Southwestern 2008, Trinity 2004) have bested since the
leagues' inception.
Much of that good work on the interior was provided by key returnee 6'2" sophomore Sarah Giles
(Marietta, Ga.). Giles set a school record with 79 blocks in 2009-2010, a number that also stands
as fourth best all-time in the SCAC. Joining Giles among the core group of returning players will
be senior inside-outside threat Chelsea MacDonald (Rome, Ga.) and junior guard Kelley Reeves
(Cumming, Ga.), the two most seasoned players under Sattele's tutelage. Also returning will be
senior point guard Morgan Loughery (Cumming, Ga.) who did a nice job at the position as
Oglethorpe nearly upset Hendrix in the SCAC Quarterfinals last year. The Petrels also get back
shooting specialists sophomore Riley Cerone (Roswell, Ga.) and sophomore Sarah Jones
(Ellijay). Jones etched her name in the Stormy Petrels record book by nailing a school best 9
three-pointers against LaGrange last December. Rounding out the key returning players are
scoring machines sophomore Mareva Bone (Marietta, Ga.) and junior Katie Weeks (Woodstock,
Ga.). Bone, despite missing much of the season battling injuries, was the game-high scorer for
both teams four times in 2009-2010, including 25 points versus East Texas Baptist in December.
Weeks, meanwhile, led all scorers on both teams a whopping six teams last season including a
season-high 30 points at Rhodes last February.
Joining the returners will be four freshmen and one junior transfer. The freshmen who Sattele will
expect solid contributions from are Holli Gibbs, a 5'8" guard from Ellijay, Ga., Ky'Laine Rogers, a
5'11" forward from McDonough, Ga., Raven Foust, a 5'4" guard from Reidsville, N.C. and Kyana
Jenkins, a 5'4" guard from Charleston, S.C. The Petrels will also acquire the services of junior
transfer Deanna Clark, a 5'9" forward from Douglasville, Ga.
"I'm looking forward to coaching this bunch," said Sattele, who added, "The group dynamic is
definitely one of the strength's with this year's team." With 11 of 13 players on this squad having
one or zero years of experience playing in Sattele's offense, that group dynamic should be critical.
Sattele summed it up by saying, "These are young Petrels eager to make a statement."

Rhodes College
Lynx
Rhodes finished the 2009-10 season with a 14-13 overall record and lost in the
semifinals of the SCAC tournament to East Divisional and SCAC Champion,
DePauw University, 77-50 at Millsaps College. The Lynx return 4 players who
started games in 2009-10. Sharwil Bell (Memphis, TN) and Lakeya McGill
(Lexington, TN) both started all 27 games in 2009-10 and will anchor the backcourt.
Last season McGill started all 27 games, averaging 10.6 points a game and led the
Lynx with 97 assists and finished 5th in the SCAC in the assist category. In three
seasons McGill has scored 786 points (10.0 ppg) and dished out 239 assists.
“Lakeya has become one of the better overall players in this league. Not only is she
a great defender, but she has provided us with a lift on the offensive end of the
floor,” said Dean. “Off the dribble she is a very difficult player to guard.”
Junior Sharwil Bell returns to the Lynx after having a tremendous sophomore year.
Bell ranked in the top 10 in six SCAC categories during the regular season. She was
fifth in steals per game (2.0), sixth in offensive rebounds per game (2.7), eighth in
rebounds per game (7.1). Eighth in assists per game (2.7), ninth in scoring (14.1
points per game) and ninth in field goal percentage (45.0 percent).
Junior center Brittany Looney (Memphis, TN) returns after having season ending
knee surgery in 2010. Looney played in 13 games in 2009-10, starting two. Looney
averaged 5.2 rebounds and 3.7 rebounds a game, while shooting 49% from the field.
“Losing Brittany for the second half of the season deeply affected the depth of our
basketball team,” said Lynx Head Coach Matt Dean “We hope to have back for the
second half of the 2010-11 season and her return will make us immediately better.
Senior Shelby Kramer (Germantown, TN) also gave the Lynx quality minutes in
2009-10 and returns to give the Lynx depth inside.
Sophomore guard Sarah Womack (Germantown, TN), returns to give the Lynx depth
at the guard spot. In 2009-10 Womack averaged 4.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and
dished out 50 assists for the year. “Womack is very versatile and a tremendous
defender, “said Dean. “I expect Sarah to be one of the better overall defenders in the
SCAC.”
Senior Alyssa Nucaro (Valhalla, NY) returns for her senior season after being on a
2010 NCAA Field Hockey team. Overall the Lynx welcome 6 newcomers to the
squad. Junior Alice Havner (Bentonville, AR), sophomores Alexandra Downey (Cold
Spring, NY) and Jaime Maxey (Atlanta, GA) and freshman Amy Handelman
(Jackson, MS), Sara Olds (Martin, TN), and Bethany Gunn (Jonesboro, AR).

2010-11 Preview
Sewanee – University of the South
Tigers
The Sewanee Tigers are looking to put their “run and gun” style of play into high gear as they enter the
2010-11 basketball season. The Tigers are hoping that the experience gained running the Grinnell System
last season will translate into an improvement of the 6-19 record.
Using their high-octane offense and aggressive full-court pressing defense, the 2009-10 Tigers led all of
Division III women’s basketball in three-point field goals made per game (9.9). The Tigers also finished in
the Top-15 of two other statistical categories last season, ranking sixth in turnover margin (8.3) and 14th in
steals per game (13.8).
Having no seniors on the squad, the junior class forms a great nucleus for this year’s Sewanee team.
Juniors Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne), Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian),
Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) and Alex Ginsburg (Hollywood, S.C., Pinewood Prep) bring a vast
amount of experience into this season, having all logged major minutes during their first two seasons on the
Mountain. A fifth junior, Virginia Zakas (Atlanta, Ga., Westminster), has been lost for the season due to a
knee injury suffered playing soccer.
Kabbes, an All-SCAC honorable mention performer in 2008-09, returns to anchor the team in the post. While
recording a team-best 6.5 rebounds per game, Kabbes was the second leading scorer on the team in 2009-
10 with a 10.2 points per game average. Providing a force inside for the Tigers, she ranked third in the
SCAC in blocked shots.
Miller, a three-point sharpshooter, poses an ever-present deep threat for the Tigers. Having made seven
three-pointers in a game on two separate occasions last season, she is the team’s leading returnee in threepoint
field goal percentage. Miller scored a career-high 26 points against Millsaps College in 2009-10.
With Ginsburg and Elliott, the important point guard position will be in good hands in 2010-11. Both are solid,
steady performers who bring skill and leadership to the position. Much is expected of their decision-making
ability to make the up-tempo offense successful.
The season-ending injury to Zakas leaves a defensive hole that the team must fill. Zakas led the team, and
was ranked fourth in the SCAC, in steals last season and she will be sorely missed in Sewanee’s full-court
attack defense.
Sophomores Dee Bradford (Isle of Palms, S.C., First Baptist) and Emily Rhodes (Richmond, Va., Douglas S.
Freeman) return for their second season. Bradford played in all 25 games last season and scored a seasonhigh
12 points against the University of Alabama-Huntsville in her first college basketball game. Sophomore
transfer Heather Baier (Grand Prairie, Ill., Rockord Lutheran) will be expected to step in and be a contributor
immediately.
Four newcomers are expected to compete for playing time early for the Tigers. Paige Lowe (Tullahoma,
Tenn., Franklin County), Clarissa Medley (LaFollette, Tenn., J. Frank White Academy), Michelle Thibodeaux
(Decatur, Ga., Academe of the Oaks), and Kali Hutson (Winchester, Tenn., Franklin County) should add
some much-needed depth to the team.
The Tigers kick off the 2010-11 season at home November 15th against Covenant College. Tip-off is
schedule for 5:00 p.m. Other non-conference games include clashes with Emory University and Agnes Scott
College. The challenging 16-game SCAC schedule includes games against perennial national powers
DePauw University and Trinity University. Sewanee will host in-state SCAC rival Rhodes College on Sunday,
February 6th.
“The effort and enthusiasm exhibited by the players early on during practice leaves me very optimistic about
the upcoming season,” says veteran head coach Dickie McCarthy. “We will be very small in stature but large
in heart. Hopefully, that will carry us a long way. These kids have bought into our system of play and are
determined to turn this program around. When you see them at work, it’s hard to argue that they won’t be
successful.”

2010-11 Preview
Southwestern University
Pirates
With the beginning of the 2010-11 Southwestern women's basketball season about to commence
many things may look the same on the sideline, but they are far from it in action.
Head Coach Kerri Brinkoeter returns to the helm for the Pirates after a brief hiatus. "I am so
excited to be back at Southwestern," states Coach Brinkoeter. "This is my alma mater, my home
and I am thrilled to be back in the roll that I feel like I didn't get to fulfill last time."
"The enthusiasm had to be changed," reflects Coach Brinkoeter. "I have been watching this team
the last few years and have seen the things that have happened. I wanted to make sure that I
came in with a lot of energy, enthusiasm and a positive outlook for our future."
Part of that enthusiasm comes from a solid core of returners and strong senior class of All-SCAC
selections Shae Seagraves and Staley Mullins (pictured) plus Anna Fareed who made a
statement after transferring in mid-season last year. "Shay and Staley bring a calmness to the
team that, with a lot of newcomers, is very important," says Coach Brinkoeter. "They may bring
different personalities and aspects of the game to the court, but they gel together very well while
Anna has really stepped up and has a competitive drive that is amazing."
Seagraves was the leading scorer for the Pirates last season, averaging 15.5 points per game.
Mullins led the team in field goal percentage at 47.3% per game and Fareed was the leader in
three point percentage at 45.2%. Mullins and Seagraves were one, two in rebounds averaging
6.9 and 5.6 rebounds per game respectively.
Also returning from last year's starting line-up is sophomore Katelyn Bartell. Bartell is a feisty
guard that was second on the team in field goal percentage at 46.6% and third in steals
averaging 1.3 per game.
Adding to the strong group of returners is a large group of newcomers that have the work ethic
needed to have a great season. "With the team knowing that we can move forward and that the
conference tournament is in our sites and reachable I think they are very excited about what is to
come," states Coach Brinkoeter.
What is to come is a schedule of 13 road games beginning at the University of Dallas on
November 15th. The Pirates struggled on the road last season and Coach Brinkoeter looks to
change the habit. "When we are on the road it is a mind-set and mentality that it is just another
basketball game. We are just going to go and play hard with high intensity at all times."
Coach Brinkoeter hopes to continue one trend from last season, however, that of stingy defense.
The Pirates held teams to shooting 34.2% from the floor, second best in the conference, in 2009-
10. "Holding teams to a low shooting percentage is phenomenal and something they did well last
year and we are going to try to carry on that trend, looking to our seniors to continue that this
year."
Southwestern hosts their first home game on November 23rd as they take on LeTourneau
University at 6:00 pm and then host Trinity in their first SCAC match-up of the season on
December 3rd at 6:00 pm.
We are going to bring excitement to the league," states Coach Brinkoeter about the upcoming
season. "It is exciting to get back on the court with Southwestern and show the league that we
are here and going to be challenging some folks throughout the year even with a talented, deep
conference."

2010-11 Preview
Trinity University
Tigers
When the 2010-11 edition of the Trinity Tigers women’s basketball takes the floor Nov. 20 at Texas-Tyler, they will have some players
who have been around the block.
Leading the charge for sixth-year Head Coach Amie Bradley will be six experienced seniors. As juniors, they helped guide last year’s
Tigers to a 17-9 overall record, and an 11-5 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference mark.
“With the seniors we have returning, the ability to shoot the basketball is still there,” said Coach Bradley, whose Tigers averaged 70.5
points per game. “Our senior class is strong, and we have a great group of freshmen. We are looking forward to having a more
consistent, high level of play throughout the year.”
Danielle Hubenak, a 5-foot-7 senior guard from San Antonio (Churchill), made the All-SCAC First Team. Hubenak, one of three
returning starters, dished out 113 assists last season (4.3 per game), and broke an 11-year Trinity record for career assists (334). She
scored 12.4 points per game, grabbed an average of 4.5 rebounds, and recorded 50 steals (1.9 per game). Hubenak had a seasonhigh
of 25 points, in a SCAC game with Colorado College.
Lindsey Hovland, a 6-foot-1 senior post from Colleyville, Texas (Heritage), blocked 24 shots, averaged 3.5 points, and pulled in 3.8
rebounds per contest. Hovland recorded 11 rebounds against Birmingham-Southern in a SCAC tilt.
A key returning starting junior is Abby Dietert, a 5-foot-10 forward from Cibolo, Texas (Steele). Dietert earned All-SCAC Second Team
honors, while leading the Tigers in scoring (13.2 points per game). She also was the top shooter (50.8 percent), and was second in
rebounding (5.9 per game). Dietert’s best scoring performance was a 22-point game against Wisconsin-Stout.
Senior forward Megan D’Errico, a 5-foot-10 forward from Issaquah, Wash. (Skyline), scored 2.6 points per game and grabbed 1.6
rebounds per contest. Claire Gerall, a 5-foot-9 senior guard from Houston (Kinkaid), scored 3.3 points per game. Landes Randall, a 5-
foot-9 forward from Spring, Texas (Klein); and Lauren Hickey, a 5-foot-11 guard from Boerne, Texas (Boerne); are two hard-working
players who will enhance the corps of seniors.
The sophomore class will be a group to be reckoned with.
Anne Waidelich, a 5-foot-9 guard from Floyd, Texas (Bland), scored an average of 3.8 points and pulled down 2.3 rebounds per game.
Amanda Patterson, a 5-foot-10 forward from Arlington, Texas (Fort Worth Nolan Catholic), played in 19 games last season. Coach
Bradley is eagerly awaiting the return of Jana Tucker, a 5-foot-10 power forward from Katy, Texas (Seven Lakes), who did not play last
year because of an injury.
Trinity graduated one senior, post Alexandra Blake.
“It’s exciting for me to have a great group of leaders,” Coach Bradley said. “Our seniors are hungry and motivated. I think you will see
a team playing with a bit of a chip on its shoulder, based on how we finished the year. We will be pretty motivated to get better every
game.”
Coach Bradley was referring to a first-round loss to Centre in the SCAC Championship Tournament in Jackson, Miss., at Millsaps
College. But, the Tigers had their moments, including a six-game winning streak to start the season. Trinity entered the 2010 calendar
year with a 7-2 record. The Tigers also went 12-3 overall in Sams Gym, and had a 7-2 SCAC record at home.
Trinity outscored opponents by nearly four points per game, and shot 40.4 percent from the field. Opponents were limited to 37.8
percent. The Tigers averaged 39.7 rebounds per game, and the opposition had a slight edge, at 41.0 per game.
A total of nine first-year players join the Tiger ranks this season, and Assistant Coach Lee Aduddell couldn’t be more pleased.
“In addition to a strong returning core, we've added an excellent freshman class we expect to contribute,” Coach Aduddell said. “We
are ready to get under way!”
Two players from Albuquerque, N.M., Bria Leitch, a 5-foot-6 guard (La Cueva); and Victoria Perko, a 5-foot-10 forward (St. Pius); were
part of teams which won back-to-back New Mexico state championships. Leitch, an outstanding shooter, will bring depth to the
backcourt, and Perko adds size and power.
The guard position will be strong, with the addition of 5-foot-9 sharpshooter, Nicolette Halbleib of Aurora, Colo. (Grandview). Sam
Couch, a 5-foot-7 guard from Dallas (Lake Highlands), will also make a statement on the court.
The versatile Murphy Burns, at 5-foot-8, plays both guard and forward, and hails from Oklahoma City (Heritage Hall). Libby Kruse, a 5-
foot-8 forward, comes to campus from Minnestrista, Minn. (Orono). Adding height to the Tiger team is 6-foot post Taylor Rubottom of
Austin, Texas (Waldorf).
Two members of Trinity’s volleyball team will join the basketball Tigers after their season. Both are from the San Antonio area, and
attended Bracken Christian School. Kelsey Daniel of Spring Branch, is a 6-foot post (middle blocker in volleyball); and Maryn Swierc,
from Bulverde, is a 5-foot-8 forward (setter on the volleyball team).
The Tigers open their home season Dec. 28-29 with the Trinity Christmas Classic. The SCAC Championship Tournament is slated for
Feb. 25-27, and again will be played in Jackson. At stake is an automatic berth in the NCAA playoffs.
“One of the reasons I love being at Trinity,” Coach Bradley added, “ is that no matter what Trinity team you’re watching, you are going
to see great people playing a sport they have a passion to play.”
