The Project: To honor and recognize the newly consolidated town of Princeton, Nancy Shill, the 

Arts Council of Princeton’s Spring 2013 Anne Reeves Artist-in-Residence, created a collage mural 

made entirely of materials found or collected in Princeton. Nancy’s approach is to represent a specific 

location in which she collects the content material for her collages and this public artwork 

creatively represents the life and culture of our newly consolidated town.

It is said that the true test of character is how one performs when faced 

with adversity. As we are in production on this Annual Report, we are observing 

the one year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy. That was truly a test for 

the Arts Council and we are proud to report that the handling of that extreme 

emergency situation was evidence of an organization with great character. 

The ACP was without power or phones for over a week. Even after power was 

restored, our server was found to be severely damaged due to a 27,000 volt 

power surge when the storm hit. Internet and email service was not fully 

functional for almost a month. 

While we were without email or any standard means of communication during 

the week after the storm, our staff held emergency meetings, members of 

our Dining by Design team gathered to reschedule the event and, through sheer resourcefulness, we found ways to get messages to 

our ticket holders, students, and members via text messages and Constant Contact. The Princeton Public Library, so welcoming to 

the entire community after the storm, was a very important community partner to the Arts Council, providing temporary office and 

meeting space to our staff and board for more than a week while we got back on our feet. 

To use another popular saying, “whatever doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” the Arts Council of Princeton today is much stronger 

than a year ago. We bounced back from the storm with the second most successful Annual Fund Drive ever, one of our most 

memorable and lucrative Dining by Design events, steadily increasing enrollment in our classes and workshops, and a continually 

growing membership and donor base. 

It’s exciting to look back on the past year and see how the Arts Council’s outreach to the community has grown. In turn, it is 

heartening to observe how community collaborations, volunteer power, and the inspiring creativity of artists and performers have 

helped to build the Arts Council’s programs and impact to new heights, even during a year when a “superstorm” posed a very real 

threat to our organization and to our community. During the year we increased our outreach to seniors, teens and to those in the 

community who have little or no access to the arts. In the spirit of our mission of building community through the arts, we were proud 

to work with our new consolidated Princeton to adopt a new town logo and to sponsor a community collage mural project. 

In these pages you will find images and words that record the many accomplishments of the Arts Council from July 2012 through 

June 2013. You will also find the names of the hundreds of individuals, businesses and nonprofit partners who come together to make

Through all of our ArtReach programs, the Arts Council provides 

free high quality, regularly occurring, subsidized arts programming to 

community members who would not otherwise receive the benefits 

of that experience. Our Arts in Healthcare initiative, Creative Aging, 

focuses on the delivery of free weekly arts instruction to low-income and 

infirm seniors in our community, and to their family and professional 

caregivers. Our Community Youth ArtReach programs, such as ArtsExchange 

for disadvantaged youth in Trenton, Creative Fridays and 

Pre-K ArtReach for at-risk youth in Princeton, reach hundreds of young 

people each week with free after school workshops and free special 

events.

highlights of the year 

In the fall the students from the ACP’s 

outreach program, Arts Exchange, won 

first prize in the Princeton University’s 

Recycling Superhero Contest and received 

a check for $500 to be used for a 

sustainability initiative for the class. The 

class created a story, masks, costumes, 

staging and voiceover for a short video about “Recycle-eeze” 

(rhymes with Hercules) who can take plastic and other 

garbage and turn it into living plants. After creating the 

video, the students paraded in masks and costumes to 

Jadwin Gym on the Princeton campus. On a small stage they 

told their story with students taking turns performing 

a speech they had written. 

Arts education is at the heart of our mission, and the dedication 

of our faculty of 75+ professional artist-educators allows us to offer 

programs reaching every facet of our diverse community. In addition to 

our core offerings for children, teens and adults in Drawing & Painting, 

Darkroom & Digital Photography and Ceramics & Sculpture, we 

continuously develop innovative programs to introduce new faculty 

and explore a range of varied media, including collaborations with 

Morven Museum and Garden, Grounds For Sculpture, Stony Brook- 

Millstone Watershed Association and Central & Southern NJ Girl 

Scouts. Over $18,000 in scholarships awarded in 2012/13 helped to 

keep our classes accessible to the entire community.

COMMUNIVERSITY 

Festival of 

the Arts 

a n d Princeton Arts Weekend “I think that the Arts Council is enhancing the cultural 

life of the community through its remarkably broad 

spectrum of activities.” —ACP event attendee 

For the first time since 1971, Communiversity Festival of the Arts 

was held on a Sunday (April 28th, 1:00 – 6:00 pm). Once again, 

downtown Princeton was transformed into an outdoor art museum, 

music festival, emporium, farmer’s market and restaurant row. Nearly 

200 booths showcasing artists, crafters and merchants from around 

the tri-state area; continuous live entertainment on five stages; 

children’s activities and games; a wide array of delicious food from 

around the globe; and a broad representation of the many businesses 

and non-profit organizations drew a record crowd of over 40,000 

participants. 

Because the goal of Communiversity is to inspire, engage and 

foster creativity among its attendees, the ACP introduced 

Paint Out Princeton. Local artists set up their easels throughout the 

event site to capture the spirit of the day. Completed paintings were 

on display at a “Wet Work” exhibition and sale in the Taplin Gallery from 

4:30 – 6:00 pm. 

Communiversity serves as the anchor event for Princeton Arts 

Weekend. Presented in cooperation with the Princeton Area Arts and 

Culture Consortium, the entire weekend of arts and cultural activities 

is meant to encourage the public to take advantage of the many arts 

events offered throughout the weekend, including the ACP’s spring 

benefit, Pinot to Picasso.

CULTURAL 

EVENTS 

“Events like the Hometown Halloween Parade, Communiversity 

and concerts at the Princeton Shopping Center were very 

special for our kids growing up. These events contribute to a 

great sense of community.” –ACP parent 

Throughout the calendar year, we organize free cultural events 

designed to engage all corners of our diverse community. Working in 

collaboration with other community organizations such as the Princeton 

Public Library, KidsBridge, Princeton Family YMCA, and the Historical 

Society of Princeton, events this past year included: the Hometown 

Halloween Parade; Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; Black History Month; 

Presidents’ Day; Paul Robeson’s Birthday; and our Free Fall Open House. 

The Arts Council of Princeton once again organized the very popular Teen 

Open Mic Night under the banner What’s Up Princeton in collaboration with 

the Corner House, HiTops, the Princeton Recreation Department and 

Princeton Public Library.

In Spring 2013, the ACP 

participated in two new outreach 

programs. ACP students in the 

Princeton Nursery School and 

Princeton Young Achievers 

programs, under the guidance of 

instructors Libby Ramage, Kathleen 

Preziosi and Bob Jenkins, 

created “For the Birds,” a 

freestanding trellis for Morven 

Museum and Garden’s Artful Trellises project. The trellis was 

built and installed by Mark Germond and was on view at Morven 

through October 2013. Another collaboration, this time with the 

Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, gave ACP’s Princeton 

Young Achievers participants the chance to paint four rain 

barrels which were placed in highly visible areas in Princeton to 

promote their use. In addition, two of the barrels were auctioned 

off at SBMWSA’s annual Butterfly Festival(August 10) and the 

very popular Watershed Fest (October 5).

During the fall of 2012, the ACP participated in the multi-venue 

collaborative exhibition project, “Fertile Crescent.” 

EXHIBITIONS 

“The 

Arts Council is one of the best venues for 

the arts in the greater Princeton region.” 

–ACP gallery visitor 

The Arts Council of Princeton’s Paul Robeson Center features 

a museum quality gallery and an outdoor sculpture terrace dedicated 

to changing exhibitions of work by living artists. Ten exhibitions were 

presented in the Peg and Frank Taplin Gallery in the Robeson Center, 

including the annual Membership Exhibition; three on the outdoor 

Michael Graves Sculpture Terrace; three in the second floor “Reference 

Gallery” of the Princeton Public Library; and seven in various 

other Robeson Center spaces. 

The Robeson Center’s Taplin Gallery is the largest non-commercial 

contemporary arts space in central New Jersey, which is a vibrant 

corridor for working artists located midway between New York and 

Philadelphia. In 2013, for the second year in a row, we were the proud 

“So thrilled that we have such a wonderful resource right here at home!” –ACP enthusiast

recipients of Discover Jersey Arts’ Peoples Choice Award for Favorite 

Art Gallery. The platform we provide for emerging and established 

artists is critical to our mission of building community through the arts.

ANNE REEVES ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAM 

The Arts Council’s Anne Reeves Artist-In-Residence program provides opportunities for artists in all media to create or complete 

new works and encourages them to engage the community in their projects. This past year the ACP sponsored two artists-in-residence: 

Efrat Kadem, whose installation, “The Reality Show,” was on view during the exhibition “Fertile Crescent” in both the Taplin Gallery and 

Digital Media Studio and consisted of surveillance video footage from various sites in Princeton; and, Nancy Shill, who ran a collage workshop 

and created a collage dedicated to the spirit of consolidated Princeton by using found objects gathered throughout our town. The completed 

public artwork is on view in Witherspoon Hall.

Interdisciplinary Projects 

The Arts Council, as a multidisciplinary 

organization, provides a platform for interdisciplinary 

exchanges. Highlights during 

the year included a “Stop Correcting Me” 

musical performance by Wilbo Wright and 

Eric Halmeier in the Taplin Gallery during 

the exhibition “Structure and Flow” and 

“Clavier à Lumirès” a performance 

installation by artist/musician Charlie 

Jarboe in the Solley Theater. 

PERFORMANCES 

“The quality and diversity of performances is a testament to the Arts 

Council’s commitment to the arts.” –ACP concert attendee 

The 2012/2013 performance calendar began with the free outdoor Summer Courtyard 

Series at the Princeton Shopping Center. A wide variety of concerts, films, installations and 

productions continued at the Robeson Center for the Arts in the Robert L. Solley Theater 

throughout the year. In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, 

the Arts Council presented the Paul Robeson Legacy Series featuring performances by the 

Grace Little Band, Clifford Adams w/ Lines of Reason, and Minister William D. Carter’s 

Soul/Gospel Extravaganza. Our musical series “Sound Bites” featured low-cost ticketed 

events and spotlighted local and regional artists. Free workshops in the theater included 

Master Classes led by Steve Hudson, The Junior Mack Band, Tom Tallitsch and Wilbo 

Wright. Our film highlights included the premier of “A Thousand Cuts” by Charles Evered, 

and a special screening of “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapie during “Fertile Crescent.” 

ACP performance programming during the year was supported in part by Bloomberg L.P.

“Events are always high quality, fun, hip, 

interesting.” –ACP fundraiser attendee 

The Arts Council of Princeton holds two annual fundraising events: 

Dining by Design in the fall and Pinot to Picasso in the spring. Dining by 

Design, held on December 1, 2012 (postponed due to Superstorm Sandy), 

hosted close to 400 people and netted close to $90,000 for ArtReach 

programs that benefit at-risk youth and low-income seniors. Over 500 people 

attended Pinot to Picasso on April 26th, 2013. The event netted over $73,000 

for the Anne Reeves Artist-in-Residence Program and Community Arts 

initiatives. ACP fundraising events have art-related themes and engage local 

artists. The popularity of the events reflects the creativity, passion and 

commitment of members of our Circle of Friends Committee, Board of 

Trustees and Staff.

The ACP is a membership organization with over 2000 active members. Annual 

memberships support the growth and preservation of the visual, literary and performing 

arts in our area. ACP members are entitled to a rich range of member-only benefits 

including the Arts Council’s ArtsCard which provides discounts to over 25 local businesses 

and discounts on classes, workshops, concert tickets, gallery purchases and

On June 20, 2013, our Annual Membership and Awards Meeting provided us with 

the opportunity to elect new and renewing trustees (see list on page 28) and recognize 

individuals and organizations for their generosity. Pride of the Arts Council Awards went

Miller, Joanne Farrugio and Dean Smith of jaZams, Mary Owen Borden Foundation,

CAPITAL AND ENDOWMENT 

The Arts Council’s “5 in 5” Campaign was launched in April 2009 with a goal of raising $5 million over the succeeding 5 years. Our 

objective was to allocate $2.5 million to endowment and capacity building and $2.5 million to pay off our construction loan (an effort 

referred to as the “Burn the Mortgage” Campaign). 

During the past year approximately $1.7 million in Capital Campaign contributions were received, which has allowed us to add nearly 

$700,000 to our Endowment, increasing it to a total of over $1.1 million; and to reduce our debt by approximately $1 million, leaving us 

a balance of approximately $770,000.

Logo Competition 

In Fall 2012, Princeton Borough Mayor Yina Moore, Princeton Township Mayor Chad Goerner and 

the Arts Council of Princeton invited designers and artists to enter a Logo Design Competition 

to create a logo to represent Consolidated Princeton. The award-winning design, created by Industrial 

Designer and Princeton resident Jeff Leonard, was chosen by a jury of the two mayors, 

marketing professional Crystal McKenzie and graphic designer Sue Bannon. The three finalists, 

including the winner, were displayed in the Town Hall in Princeton Township Building from 

December through the reorganization ceremony on January 1, 2013.

We Salute 

The Arts Council of Princeton lost two 

family members this past year. Al Aronson, 

ACP member artist, was widely known for 

his vibrant, expressionist canvases. He passed away in September, not 

long after he was invited to participate in ACP’s exhibition Structure & Flow, 

which was then curated in his memory. Kristina Barbara Johnson, ACP 

board member, passed away in April. Kristina was a dedicated volunteer, 

co-chairing ACP’s capital campaign during a period of rapid growth. She 

continued to graciously open her home and collection for tours and school 

trips where in the warmer months, visitors enjoyed her beautiful garden and 

fed her 200-some year old pet tortoise. Both Al and Kristina will be missed 

tremendously. Memorial Funds were set up in honor of these two individuals, 

and contributions to the Kristina Johnson Memorial Fund launched the 

Kristina Johnson PopUp Studio at the Princeton Shopping Center.

Home and Away 

In Fall 2012, ACP launched a series of art enrichment courses specifically 

designed to meet curriculum standards for homeschoolers, ages 5-16. 

Throughout the year, 6 ACP artist-instructors taught 15 classes to 57 

students in a variety of media including photography, ceramics and 

sculpture. Each semester culminated in an exhibition of student work on 

the top floor of the Robeson Center. Due to positive participation, 

the homeschool series has become a core offering at ACP.
