Blind and<br />

on his own<br />

COCOA BEACH. Fla . - John<br />

Cracke l is an unu sual young man . He<br />

is compl etely self-supporting, doin g<br />

all his own coo king and clean ing.<br />

That ' s not so unusual, you might<br />

say.<br />

But it is fo r a 26-year-o ld who has<br />

been blind since he wa s 12 . and co uld<br />

only see a little out of one eye before<br />

that.<br />

John works at the Wilway Co . here<br />

as a machi ne ope rator, " ma king<br />

bob b in guides for coil-w in di ng<br />

machine s. " he says.<br />

He got his traini ng at the School<br />

for the Blind in St. Augustine , Aa .<br />

He likes worki ng with electronics<br />

and tape recorders, and for sports he<br />

enjoys swimming and waterskiing.<br />

He likes nearl y all kinds ofmusic and<br />

likes to dance . And he enjoys writing<br />

letters to and receiving them from<br />

other Church members .<br />

John fi rst heard Th e Wo rld<br />

Tomorrow on radio in 1965 and was<br />

bapt ized by Roger Foster of the Lakeland<br />

, Fla., church last March. He<br />

attends church now at Melbourne.<br />

Joh n has his own apart ment here,<br />

at 619 W. Peac htree , Apt. 9 , and is<br />

proud of the way he can take care of<br />

himse lf. He is also high o n Wilway.<br />

Rockha mpton is situated on the central<br />

coa st of Quee nsland, and is o ne<br />

of the smaller church areas. with only<br />

45 people.<br />

After so me success ful street stalls.<br />

the brethren decid ed to launch something<br />

a little more adve nturou s. A<br />

plot of la nd on John De Mey' s<br />

pinea pple farm was pUI aside and<br />

watermelon seeds were planted . At<br />

first the seeds grew a lillie slowly,<br />

compa red to the weeds . Later . the<br />

problem of wateri ng them during the<br />

Feast of Tabe rnacles arose , but. in<br />

the end. all the hard work paid off.<br />

On Sundays duri ng <strong>No</strong>ve mber and<br />

December, the melo ns were picked ,<br />

weighed and roi d. Som e were sold to<br />

fruit sho ps , while others we re<br />

hawked to peop le at the beach. In all.<br />

brethren here have raised $2,000 toward<br />

meeting for the first time of the year .<br />
