We are really in the third generation of the present era of<br />

the WORLDWIDE CHURCH OF GOD. Few are still liVing<br />

who remember how God started it. HERE IS EYE-OPENING<br />

NEWS to most members of God's Church TODAY. And it<br />

corrects a false rumor concerning <strong>Herbert</strong> W. <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

and the "Sardis" era of the Church. Mr. ARMSTRONG DID<br />

NOT " LEAVE" THE CHURCH OF GOD (Sardis era) TO<br />

START THE PRESENT WORLDWIDE CHURCH OF GOD.<br />

<strong>No</strong>r did he ever seek to draw away any of their members<br />

after him! He was never a member of either of the two factions<br />

of that church - though he fellowshipped and gave<br />

help to each of them. Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong>'s relation with " Sardis"<br />

was one of "GIVING" not "GETIING."<br />

Jesus Christ. 'It was a SPIRITUAL<br />

ORGAN ISM - not a worldly organization<br />

- yet well organized<br />

on GOD'S PATTERN .<br />

It was headed by JesusChrist,<br />

who already had ascended to<br />

God's throne in heaven . It was<br />

strong speak at the Feast.<br />

As the Festival got under way the<br />

even ing of Oct. 15 it was Mr. Arm ­<br />

stro ng who greeted Peastgoe rs ,<br />

whe the r the y we re mee ting in<br />

coco nut-palm huts or Church-owned<br />

tabernacles such as the ones at the<br />

Lake of the Ozarks. Mo.. and Wisconsin<br />

Dells. Wis.<br />

Film s that Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong> had<br />

- a spiritual foundat ion - the<br />

apostles (New Testament) and<br />

prophets (Old Testament) with<br />

Christ the actual HEAD .<br />

Under the apostles and the very<br />

f ew prophets after A.D. 31 were<br />

evangelists, pastors, other elders<br />

made befo re the FCJst for this purpose<br />

were shipped 10 all points of the<br />

globe . For German-. French- and<br />

was translated.<br />

Some attend ing the Feast in African<br />

sites had never seen M r. <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

before. Festival coordinators<br />

reported delight at bei ng able 10 have<br />

the films. wi th many calling the presentations<br />

the highlight of the Pestival.<br />

Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong> himself made personal<br />

appearances at three U.S. sites.<br />

Accompanied by his assistant, Stanley<br />

Rader. be spoke before a combined<br />

total of 28, 000 brethren in St.<br />

Petersburg, Fla.. Big Sandy. Tex ..<br />

and finally Tucson , Ariz. Mr. Rader<br />

also gave talks at the three sites.<br />

Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong> hailed the Feast as<br />

was in the Spirit on the Lord's<br />

day ..." (Revelation 1:10). In<br />

TO RESUME PUBLICATION<br />

As announced by <strong>Herbert</strong> W. <strong>Armstrong</strong> in a co-worker<br />

letter dated Oct. 16, The <strong>Good</strong> <strong>News</strong> will soon be<br />

changed into a full four-color magazine and the tabloid<br />

pape r will continue publication under the name The<br />

Worldwide <strong>News</strong>. Work has already begun on the first<br />

two issues of The <strong>Good</strong> <strong>News</strong> magazine, and it should<br />

begin regular publication within the next few months.<br />

As explained by Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong> , the new <strong>Good</strong> <strong>News</strong><br />

will be devoted to biblical and spiritual food for members.<br />

The Worldwide <strong>News</strong> will resume its emphasis on news<br />

of the Work and its leaders through out the world and<br />

continue its coverage of local church activities, announcements<br />

of personal news, features on members<br />

and additional articles of a spiritual nature.<br />

We welcome your comments and look forwar d to serving<br />

you with continued news and encouragement through<br />

We are still in the process of enteri ng all the Holy Day<br />

offering information into ourfilesforthe FeastofTabernacles<br />

and last Great Day, so we do not have final figures at this<br />

time , but we would like to give you the preliminary numbers in<br />

-, this report (Un ~ed States only ).<br />

com pleting the negotiations for the<br />

sale of the two campuses (Brickel<br />

Woo d, Eng land, and Big Sandy,<br />

Tex .) I would like to share some of<br />

the deta ils with you .<br />

As early as 1973, Mr. <strong>Herbert</strong><br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> had determined that both<br />

the Big Sandy and Brickel Wood colleges<br />

should be closed. This is a task<br />

that could not be 'accomplished overnight<br />

as there were a number of person<br />

nel and financial considerations<br />

to be hand led . The rest of the story<br />

has already been told.<br />

In J974 we closed the Brickel<br />

Wood college and approached the<br />

firm of Cl unon s of Londo n to assist<br />

us in tbe sale of the campus. We had a<br />

numbe r of interested parties, both<br />

from England and foreign countries,<br />

but we were unable to co me to a<br />

. equitable agreement until the middle<br />

of this year. We fil!.aIly ag r ee~ on a<br />

price 'of 2 mi1lion pounds (approximately<br />

$4 million) for the sale of the<br />

campus. .T bls is more than o ur investment<br />

in the property .<br />

The Big Sandy campus, closed in -.<br />

1977 when all college operations<br />

were co nsolidated in Pasade na, has<br />

now recei ved one offer of purchase<br />

that is being cons idered bytbeexec u-'<br />

tive c omm itt ee. T he offer is<br />

SIOO,OOO higher than o ur origi nal<br />

asking price and about 25 percent<br />

higher than the estima ted market<br />

value we had obtaine d in July. We<br />

have been carrying the ca mp us'<br />

value on our books at approximately<br />

S8.4 million .<br />

We fed that we have been good .<br />

stewards in these transactions . We<br />

have not lost money on these transactions<br />

nor have we obtained unreasonably<br />

high return s. It is our intentio n<br />

to utilize the funds received from<br />

these sales as an investment that will<br />

provide much-needed underpinning<br />

for our working capit al, and at the<br />

sha.ring...<br />

The Fe ast of Tabernacles .<br />

<strong>1978</strong>, is over. For some it may<br />

have been their first; for others<br />

their fifth , 12th o r even 25th. For<br />

my fam ily it was the 20th . From<br />

all indications as report s come in<br />

to T~ <strong>Good</strong> <strong>News</strong> from aroun d<br />

the world others felt as we did ­<br />

that it was a mov ing , encouraging<br />

and uplifting Feast. A Feast that<br />

dep icted peace ,and unity. One<br />

that ':'Ie will riot soon forget.<br />

However, it is easy to slip back<br />

into o ur routine of life and forget<br />

the spiritual and physical lessons<br />

we learned during this past Pesrival<br />

season .<br />

Tabernacles becomes histo ry . · We<br />

can easily recall the inspiring, meaningful<br />

messages given from the pulpit<br />

and can still savor the millen iallike,<br />

abundant, joyful living experi ­<br />

enced dur ing the eight days or mo re.<br />

Probably we all feel encouraged, uplifted<br />

,and spiritua lly rejuvenated .<br />

And as a result of the Feast , we've<br />

come away with a ' greater sense of.<br />

comm itmen t, ded ication and resolve<br />

general. ... ....<br />

But will this reso lve arid renewed<br />

enth usiasm last? O r will it be as<br />

short-lived - as the proverbi al<br />

New. Year's reso lution, which lasts<br />

.about as long as the hangover? Will<br />

this year's Feast give us an added<br />

spiritual boost that will raise us to a<br />

higher. spiritual plane of existence<br />

whereby we will personally reflect<br />

the image and characte r of Je sus<br />

Christ more profoundly than eve r before?<br />

. .<br />

Kno wled ge put ' t~ use<br />

The answer · lies ~O l so much in<br />

what we ' ve heard , or seen or experi­<br />

, enced, but in what we will person ally<br />

·do right now and in the days ahead .<br />

. As <strong>Herbert</strong> W . Armst rong has often<br />

said. know ledge is of no real value<br />

· unless it is put to use . Thi s is espe ­<br />

ci ally true in respect to spiri tual<br />

knowled ge. What will we' do with<br />

our Feast expe rience? Will we use it'?<br />

Wi.1I we ponde r over it, and build<br />

upon it, o r will we let it lie dormant<br />

and die a slow death ?<br />

It' s quite cle ar that unless we use<br />

the know ledge and apply it to our life<br />

·and circumstances, it will be lost,<br />

perhaps never to be rega ined. There<br />

is an old motto, " use iror lose it." It' s<br />

si mp le, yet so profound. W hen<br />

viewed in this light, it seems that our<br />

optio ns are somewhat limited. It is<br />

hoped we' all will make the righ t<br />

choice and with God's help will use<br />

the spiritual momentum of the Feast<br />

to success fully proje ct us through<br />

another year, no matter what obstacles<br />

or trial s this life may bring, individually<br />

o r as a Wo rk .<br />

Paul led the way<br />

In anoth er time , in another setting,<br />

a man named Paul trod this same<br />

Christian road before us. He wasnot<br />

unfamiliar with the tri als and tests of<br />

life. Few can match his reco rd " of<br />

labour s, of beatin gs, of imprisonments,<br />

of perils', of fastings ..<br />

(see II Cori nthians II). His life is a<br />

glowing example of how to be a<br />

<strong>1978</strong><br />

Chr istian no matter the ci rc umstances,<br />

be it in poverty or wealth, in<br />

' sick ness o r in health, If the stress of<br />

life is see ming ly too much, take<br />

heart, Paul has been there . He overcame<br />

and freely gives us the bene fit<br />

of his experience.<br />

Paul, an apostle of Jesus Ch rist ,<br />

ioned athlete. There is no specific<br />

age qual ifi c ario n c- and the rac e<br />

chairman doesn 't even' di scriminate<br />

agains t women . But yo u.do have to<br />

be aC hristia n-c- willing to wo rkh ard<br />

and put o ut,a lot of effo rt;<br />

A tong-distan ce run<br />

The race Paul alludes to is not a<br />

short 60- o r lOG-yard dash over a<br />

perfectl y level aruflcial running turf<br />

encompassed by sta nds fiBed ..with<br />

admir ing, cheeri ng fans. It is more<br />

like a long distance cross-country run<br />

winding ove r unpaved dirt o r gravel<br />

roads as well as hard con crete , with<br />

stretches of level gro und and hilly ,<br />

gut-wrenching terra in.<br />

Because of the long distance , the<br />

field of runners spreads our quic kly<br />

and you may feel you' re runni ng all<br />

alone. At other times, you see runners<br />

pass you and yo u' re tempted 10<br />

. drop o ut in disco uragement. After<br />

"all, who would know (or care) ? And<br />

then there's the pain of blisters or j ust<br />

.plain .fatigue. W hat a relief it would<br />

be to quit. There' s also the double<br />

threa t of heat and humid ity. which<br />

can sap your strength, but you go on .<br />

The drive and resolve has to come<br />

from within' ast here are no cheering<br />

throngs to ' encou rage . you along ­<br />

but , finally , the long-awai ted finish<br />

line.<br />

While only one can come in f irst,<br />

when you've run bard and done your<br />

best, you know yo u' ve won . Th ose<br />

who have experienced this know the<br />

joy of running . Al the end of his life<br />

the apostle Paul expressed thisjoy.<br />

knowi ng he had run his spiritual<br />

mar athon well and won the crown of<br />

righteousness (ll Timo thy 4:8) .<br />

We must r un<br />

We -Christians have been called<br />

and chosen to partici pate in this race<br />

for eremal life. To reject this opportunity<br />

co uld mean our salvat ion . So<br />

run we must , day byday, week by<br />

week . Along the route we mi ght<br />

stumble at time s or have to sto p<br />

momentarily at an aid station for<br />

some thirst-quenching wate r, but<br />

remember that Pau l, who was tried<br />

· and tested in much tbe same manner ,<br />

is_cheering u·5'on ; ··5o run, that ye<br />

may obtain [the prize]" (I Corinthians<br />

9:24) .<br />

The Feast of <strong>1978</strong>·is over , but for<br />

us the challenges and ' trials !O f ' 1ife~remain·.::Wehave·<br />

been ' g iven the<br />

'knowledge, and we have the tools, It<br />

" is-now o ur responsibi lity to meditate<br />

on the bless ings we have been given , .<br />

to ass imi late the rich spiri tual<br />

nourishment rece ived and renew o ur<br />

· resolve and 'co mmitment to back up<br />

Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong> and this Work in it' s<br />

end -time commissio n.<br />

The apostle Paul met his challenges,<br />

accompl ished his work and<br />

ran his race. He won his crown . We<br />

", too have a crow n prepared for. us.<br />

"Behold,) come quickly: hold fast<br />

which thou hast, that no man take thy<br />

crown " (Revelation 3:11) . So in the<br />

com ing year when the road of life<br />

· getstough . remember Paul and keep ­<br />

on running. .<br />

A violent 'persecution had set<br />

in by A.D . 33. By A.D. 70 the<br />

true Church was virtuall y forced<br />

to go unde rground. They were<br />

discouraged - had lost their first<br />

love . But , also , that has heen true<br />

of every era of the Church ­<br />

only not so dominant as in the<br />

first two centuries.<br />

My wife , after nine years<br />

of happy marriage, had hegun<br />

keeping the seventh-day Sabbath<br />

. I was aghast ! That , to me ,<br />

was religious fanaticism! She<br />

claimed to have found this teaching<br />

in the Bible .<br />

My first upsetting thought<br />

was, What will my business contacts<br />

and friends say? It was a devastating<br />

thought, humiliating!<br />

But , when.l first was converted<br />

and came on the scene , the<br />

Church ( Sardis era) was 'widel y<br />

scattered. There was a U .S .<br />

headquarters at Stanherry, Mo .<br />

But there were a few very small<br />

scattered groups, which we have<br />

discovered since , in Central and<br />

South America and Europe.<br />

These brethren were still keeping<br />

the Sabbath, the Holy Days<br />

(which the Sardis people in<br />

America WERE NOT), and still<br />

kept the NAME, Church of God . '<br />

Then , at age 34, I was assoiled<br />

in Genesis. First I -delved<br />

Spencer, Vogt , Chamherlin and<br />

Moore, and even into the earlier<br />

' works of Lamarck and his theory<br />

of " Use and Disuse," which<br />

preceded Darwin's "surVival of<br />

crow" in regard ' to my . wife's<br />

supposed "fanaticism." It .was<br />

not what I wanted to believe,<br />

THEN! Bui by now I had taken a<br />

real beating. I had proved truth<br />

contrary to what I 'wanted to believe<br />

Let me pause here to add a .<br />

point to what I wrote above, saying<br />

most people believe what<br />

they have , repeatedly heard or<br />

. read or been taught. There are<br />

two other psychological truismsin<br />

regard to WHYpeople believe<br />

whatthey do .. One is, people<br />

carelessly ,acc e pt what those<br />

around them believe. Most Thais<br />

are ' Buddhists because. those .<br />

aro und them in Thailand 'are<br />

Buddhists. Ther'e is the<br />

psychological tendency to. go<br />

along with one's peers. -<br />

One other reason for people's<br />

beliefs is that human nature tends<br />

to cause one to believe what .he<br />

wants to believe, and .refu se , regardless<br />

of proof, what he does<br />

not want to believe. There is the<br />

old saying, " O ne convinced<br />

against his will is of the same<br />

opinion still ."<br />

God's Word alone<br />

is'truth<br />

That is why I have said the<br />

experience I was painfully subjected<br />

to in this six-months' intensive<br />

' study was UNIQUE in<br />

human life and conduct. I know<br />

of no world religious leader who<br />

arrived at his teachings in such<br />

manner. Perhaps . that" is why<br />

GOD'S INSPIRED WORD alone ­<br />

as I proved - is TRUTH ; Only<br />

GOD is infallibly correct!<br />

I was brought, by the spring of<br />

is the real true Church which<br />

The true GOSPEL ·<br />

. eye-opening discovery , upon<br />

looking into the Bible for myself,<br />

had revealed in stark plainness<br />

that.rhe teachings"of traditional<br />

Christianity were. in' most basic<br />

points. the very opposite of the<br />

teachings ofChrist, of Paul and<br />

ofthe original true 'Church!<br />

Could the original and only<br />

true Church have disintegrated<br />

, and disappeared? Could it have<br />

ceased .to exist? <strong>No</strong>, for ,I .read<br />

\.vhere,'Jesus said the gates of the<br />

grave would never prevail<br />

against it. 'A lso He had said to His<br />

disclples who, formed His<br />

Church, " Lo. I am with you always.<br />

Then I saw that the very<br />

PURPOSE of the Church was to<br />

preach Chrisr's GOSPEL! It is<br />

HIS' BODY - His instrument by<br />

which He carried "on GOD'S<br />

WORK! . .<br />

I looked carefully at that Gospel<br />

as Christ Himself preached<br />

and taught it to His first ministers:<br />

It is recorded in the ' four<br />

books of Matthew, Mark, Luke<br />

and John . At almost every point<br />

of teaching thatJesus enunciated,<br />

the teachings of traditional Christian<br />

bodies today are just the opposite<br />

THEY WERE NOT PREACHING<br />

THE SAME GOSPEL ATALL,BUTA<br />

TOTALLY OPPOSITE MESSAGE!<br />

This was shocking - incredible<br />

- unbelievable! Yet I was compelled<br />

to seeit was true!<br />

Jesus began the Work of<br />

preaching the very Gospel that<br />

GOD the Father had sent to mankind<br />

through Him.. He commissioned<br />

His disciples - His apostles<br />

- to carry the same Gospel<br />

to all the world , And He has said<br />

He would never drop the 'Work<br />

He had begun! But WHERE was it<br />

going on today?<br />

Seeking an obedient Church<br />

I knew now that when I found<br />

the one and only true Church, I<br />

would find a Church obedient to<br />

God - keeping His commandments<br />

- having the testimony of<br />

Jesus Christ, which is the TRUTH<br />

of the Scriptures. .<br />

I had been much impressed by<br />

a description of the true Church,<br />

My intensive study had , revealed<br />

one thing plainly : "The<br />

commandments . of God" mean<br />

.. Sabbath keeping " to most traditional<br />

denominations. They say.<br />

"The commandments are done<br />

away!':,.They reject "thecomrnandments<br />

of God. •• "<br />

That automatically ruled out<br />

all churches observing Sunday.<br />

So far as I could learn. it reduced<br />

the search to three small groups '<br />

- the Seventh-Day Adventists,<br />

the Seventh,Day Baptists, and a .<br />

little, almost unheard-of church<br />

called the Church of God , which<br />

maintained a small publishing-<br />

. house headquarters at Stanberry,<br />

Mo ,<br />

So I examined Seventh-Day<br />

Adventist teachings - just as I<br />

did those of many other denominations.<br />

I obtained their<br />

magazines, their booklets ' and<br />

pamphlets, their large book of<br />

Biblereadings orBible "home<br />

instructor.' ,<br />

The true Church is the one that<br />

lives by EVERY WORD of God ­<br />

the words of the BIBLE!<br />

Never an Adventist<br />

It seems necessary 'to add here<br />

that I have never ,been a member<br />

of the Seventh-Day Adventist<br />

denomination. False "statements<br />

have appeared in various church<br />

or religious . m a g a z i n e s ~ pamphlets<br />

or tracts that I am a former<br />

Seventh-Day Adventist. Idid'obtain<br />

much of .the ir literature to<br />

compare wirh the Bible , I did ex.. .<br />

amine and study.it with an open '<br />

mind, and without . prejudice. I<br />

was happy to find that like most<br />

denominations, they do have certain<br />

points of truth . <strong>No</strong>ne is 100<br />

Percent ' in error.. .' .<br />

But my familiarity with Adventist<br />

doctrmes.bas come entirely<br />

through their published literature.1<br />

Next, I looked into the teaching<br />

of the Seventh-Day Baptists.<br />

I found it to be virtually identical,<br />

except for observing a different<br />

day of the week. with other Protestant<br />

denominations ..,- especially<br />

be fruitless?<br />

. The only Church I had so far<br />

f~und . that " k.ept the command- .<br />

ments of God, ' and the testimonyof<br />

Jesus Christ," and at the same<br />

time bore the ' NAME of the 'original<br />

true Church, was this almost<br />

. unknown little Church of God<br />

with its small publishing house in<br />

Stanberry, Mo. .<br />

But this. left me quite confused.<br />

For this was a 'li tt le,<br />

church. especially compared 'to<br />

the Roman Catholic • "the<br />

Methodist, the Baptist , tbe Presbyterian;<br />

' the ' Lutheran or other<br />

large churches numbering mitlions<br />

of members.' Then I saw<br />

where Jesus called His 'C hurch<br />

the " little flock ,"<br />

But still I was not completely<br />

~ "This initial stage of my research rudely shook my faith in the<br />

existence of God. It brought me to realization that I had assumed<br />

the reality of God, because from childhood I had heard - and<br />

therefore assumed - it. For a while my head was literally swimming,<br />

is given unto me in heaven and .<br />

earth" (Matthew 28:18). I read<br />

'how Jesus Christ was to beIN His<br />

Church! He guides, it! H~ directs<br />

is the Spirit of POWER! This little<br />

church seemed to be powerless<br />

The near fight<br />

at a meetlog<br />

Along in <strong>No</strong>vemher of 1930<br />

the Runeorns, neighbors of my<br />

parents, asked me to go with<br />

them to a business ,meeting 'of<br />

brethren of the Church of God ,<br />

being held in the home of Mrs.<br />

Ira Curtis, near Jeffe rson, Ore .<br />

Although I was a guest - I bad .<br />

never become a member of this<br />

church, whose headquarters were<br />

at Stanberry, Mo . '- \bey asked<br />

me to act as "secretary and take<br />

down the minutes of the meeting.<br />

I learned that the meeting was<br />

called for the purpo se of organizing<br />

these Oregon memhers into<br />

an Orego n Confer ence .<br />

, I sens ed imm edia tely the re<br />

was a feeling of di vision "among<br />

them. Elder A.N. Dugger was<br />

the real leader of the church at<br />

Stanberry . He was editor of the<br />

church's weekly paper sent 10 '<br />

membe rs. He either was, or had<br />

been, president of their General '<br />

held biannually. Most of the<br />

Oregon memhers lived in the<br />

Willamette Valley in the vicinity<br />

of Jefferson . Most of them were .<br />

in attendance at this business<br />

meetin g.<br />

About balf of them were opposed<br />

to Elder Dugger. They<br />

"wanted to organize a state conference<br />

. Some of the other states<br />

"had state"conferences . The pur- .<br />

pose of this Oregon State Confer ­<br />

ence was to bold the tithes and<br />

churc h funds contributed by<br />

Oregon member s in Oregon .<br />

But actually, it was born of<br />

opposition to and dissatisfaction .<br />

with the Stanherry memhership<br />

" and state conference. The other<br />

half were ju st "as"verbal in their<br />

loyalty and . support of Elder<br />

Dugger and the Stanberry regime<br />

.<br />

Tbe dispute over Stanherry<br />

politics and Elder Dugger ' s personal<br />

fitness and integrity waxed<br />

more and more heated . One tall<br />

man who weighed considerably<br />

over 200, and was a leader , spoke<br />

of "dirty politics" and called<br />

Elder Dugger a " ward-healer"<br />

An equally vociferous man on the<br />

other side of tbe dispute rose to<br />

defend the honor of Mr " Dugger .<br />

Words flamed hotter and hotter.<br />

Each side was sincere and 1n<br />

'roused earnest. Under the tense<br />

pressure tempers were flaring . I<br />

· hecame afraid it was going to be<br />

settled (or unsettled) by fists.<br />

- At that instant I rose , and in a<br />

loud but calm voice asked if I<br />

might say a word . Since I was a<br />

guest. ithey didn 't refuse .<br />

"Brethren.Y-Lsaid, " you' all<br />

know how ;' as recorded in the<br />

first chapter of Job, when the<br />

sons of God came together, Satan<br />

came also. You also know how,<br />

in the 12th chapter of Revelation,<br />

we are told tbat the people Satan<br />

is most angry with 'are those who<br />

keep the commandments of God .<br />

and have the testimony 'of Jesus<br />

Christ . That meansus. Satan "is<br />

here . He is stirring up rage and<br />

anger in your hearts , I am going<br />

to drop to my knees right now and<br />

ask God Almighty 10 cast Satan<br />

out of this bouse ! All of you who<br />

wish may kneel with me and pray<br />

silently." · ,<br />

Without another word, I<br />

quickly'dropped 10 my knees heside<br />

my chair and began asking<br />

· God to rebuke Satan and this controversial<br />

spirit that was rousing<br />

these men to anger and to drive<br />

Satan from our presence and to<br />

give !Js pe a~e and love -:<br />

When I rose there were some<br />

wet eyes, but there were no angry<br />

voice s. These people were sincere<br />

. They simpl y helieved what<br />

they believed and had allowed<br />

· themselves to becaught off guard<br />

and roused to ang~r. "<br />

R.L Taylor arrives<br />

.In early summer of that -year,<br />

1931, a forme r Seventh -Day Adventi<br />

st minister, a Robert L .<br />

Taylor , came to Oreg on from<br />

California. It was practice among<br />

the~ Church of Gnd people to<br />

"Jesus said we should KNOW 'by their truns.' Andnow they were<br />

splitright down the middle.Ahouse dividedcannotstand, andtheir<br />

two houses - Stanberry and Salem- did NOT stand!"<br />

hold all-da y meetings about once<br />

a month . It was at one of these<br />

meetings that Mr. Taylor<br />

preached . We were all quite impressed<br />

. .<br />

"He's a better preacher than<br />

any of the leading minister s from<br />

Stanherry," seemed to he the<br />

common exclamation. Indeed we<br />

·were all rather swept off our feet<br />

by his preachin g.<br />

After a few weeks, the breth ­<br />

ren of this Oregon Conference,<br />

which bad been formed the preceding<br />

<strong>No</strong>vember, wanted to<br />

· team Elder Tayl or with me to<br />

hold an evangelistic campaign.<br />

They were becoming anxious to<br />

see a linle life in the work of the<br />

Church.<br />

They found Elder Taylor very<br />

receptive to theidea . By this time<br />

·a modest balance had accumulated<br />

in the new conference<br />

treasury . You will remember that<br />

the object in forming this state<br />

conference was to create a local<br />

state treasury and keep their<br />

tithes and offerings in the state<br />

instead of heing sent to Stan '<br />

berry , Mo . Tbe se were days of<br />

rapidl y descending economic depression.<br />

but several of these<br />

brethren were vegetable gardeners<br />

. They were doing very well<br />

financiall y.<br />

This made it necessary that the<br />

Oregon Conference ordain me to<br />

the ministry .<br />

ORDAINED Christ's minister<br />

the ministry full time meant a<br />

complete change in my life. In<br />

former years the idea of becoming<br />

a minister was the very last<br />

thing I should have wanted to do.<br />

But by June , 1931, I had heen<br />

preach ing a great deal for 3 ~<br />

years . By this time my whole<br />

heart was in it.<br />

I shall never forget that mo­<br />

.merit of my ordination.<br />

The meeting was being held<br />

· outdoors . I do not remember<br />

where - except it was in the<br />

general rural area of Jefferson. I<br />

do' not remember other circumstances.<br />

But I do rememberthe ordination<br />

itself . It was one of those<br />

once -in-a-lifetime experiences<br />

like heing married, and heing<br />

baptized. Only this seemed to me<br />

to be the most momentous event<br />

of my entire life .<br />

AllttW, brethren -,- as many as<br />

could get their hands through to<br />

my head - laid their hands on<br />

me-on my head, my shoulders,<br />

my chest'and my back (like Acts<br />

13:1-3).<br />

I am sure it was the weight of<br />

the experience". from a spiritual<br />

and emotional standpoint; rather<br />

than tbe physical weight ofhands<br />

and arms - but it seemed I was<br />

entirely weighted down with the<br />

heaviest load I had ever stood up<br />

under .<br />

To me this was symbolic of the<br />

tremendous respons ibilit y that<br />

now came down on my head and<br />

shoulders.<br />

And let it be made plain here: I<br />

was ordained by. and under the<br />

authority o f tbe Oregon Confer ­<br />

ence of The Chur ch of God , separately<br />

incorporated; nor by the<br />

Stanherry, Mo ., headquarters. Sunday night. July 9. The Fishers<br />

and I decided to start the meet -<br />

in their homes some of the<br />

people who had attended the<br />

meeting in Salem. Result? A new<br />

church of close to 50 members<br />

organized. I had asked A.J . Ray<br />

to pastor it. Under his "Ieadership"<br />

it lasted six weeks.<br />

Mr. Oberg was start ing his<br />

new meetings in Harrisburg on<br />

than 20 signified their desireto<br />

establish a new Sabbath-keepirig<br />

I would like to announce something<br />

that gives me great pleasure.T<br />

had the choice of announcing it at the<br />

end of my sermon or at the beginning,<br />

but it is the kind of thing Ideo'!<br />

want to postpone . My daughter<br />

Carol, whom Mr. <strong>Herbert</strong> W. <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

married last June at our home<br />

in Beverly Hills, Calif. , has told Mr .<br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> and me that she wants to<br />

be baptized. She is here today .with<br />

her husband Me. Larry Little and my<br />

wife. Immediately upon our return to<br />

the Pasadena area, shewill be baptized<br />

by one of the ministers.<br />

Thi s give s me a tremendous<br />

amount of satisfaction, because although<br />

I reall y haven 't tried to teach<br />

her about these things, which I feel<br />

are so personal, between man and<br />

God, I have tried to set the right example<br />

and I have tried to inculcate in<br />

that way those values that have become<br />

important to you and those values,<br />

that, of course, have become so '<br />

important to me. AU of my family',<br />

my children in particular, I would<br />

say, have been very much influenced<br />

by Mr . <strong>Armstrong</strong>. lust by what he<br />

does in their presence , what he says<br />

in their presence and what they have<br />

generally , observed, and t hey are<br />

leading the kind of lives indicative<br />

that much of what Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

stands for, and what the Chur ch<br />

stands for has indeed rubbed off.<br />

Five years ago at the Feast of<br />

Tabernacles I spoke about the fact that<br />

the Work of God was unique, and<br />

I' m sure by now all of you understan<br />

d that. As Mr . Arm strong's<br />

closest adviser, then as now, I could<br />

see many, many change s that would<br />

actually lie ahead for the Work .<br />

Changes that would be beneficial for<br />

the Work. Changes that J felt would<br />

be a s j g~ ~~a:t the great co~ m i ss i o n.<br />

w as : , be i ng ~fu l fi Jle d. And some of<br />

tho se changes ; I believe , were<br />

foreseeable in the aftermath of the<br />

events of 1971 and 1972 - events I<br />

felt would ultimately compel ' the<br />

brethren of this Church to come to<br />

grips with the only reality -the reality<br />

that this was, and is, and will be the<br />

true Church and a Work of the living<br />

God and not a Work of.mere men.<br />

Television interview<br />

l ust a few days ago I was interviewed<br />

by a television journalist for a<br />

program devoted to the work . its<br />

past, its present and its future. Once<br />

again I proved, I believe, to that<br />

journalist thai the Work of the living<br />

God does not exist to make a partlcular<br />

radio program, with a particular<br />

frequen cy of airing , in ' particular<br />

places and at particular times. The<br />

same for television. The Work does<br />

not exist to produce a television program<br />

with a particular fonnat for airing<br />

at particular times and places. It<br />

doesn' t even exist for the purpose of<br />

produci ng and distributing a<br />

magaz ine or any number of<br />

magazines with. a particular format<br />

and frequency of publication . It<br />

doesn' t exist to maintain one or two<br />

or three collegiate-grade academic<br />

institutions in one or more places<br />

. around the world. It does exist, however,<br />

for one and only one purpose,<br />

and that is, of course,' to propagate<br />

source of great strength and knowledge-the<br />

written Word of the living<br />

to management textbooks to learn<br />

how to govern God 's Work . We<br />

don't have to go to graduate schools<br />

of business and,finance to learn how<br />

to govern God's Work. We , don 't ..<br />

have to go to academic and scholarly<br />

treatises of a theological nature to<br />

understand the message in the written<br />

Word of the living God , and we<br />

know that we can rely on the faith<br />

that has been given to us and with<br />

hope and with -love for God and our<br />

neighborwe will be able to overcome<br />

any and all problems, as they arise.<br />

Changes have indeed taken place<br />

over the pastfive years, and many<br />

changes havetaken place during the<br />

last five months. J am certain that you<br />

all realize, however, how necessary<br />

these changes have been . I am certain<br />

that you are as grateful as 1 that we<br />

arebackon the right track, that God<br />

is on His throne ..that Christ is heading<br />

thisWork and Mr . <strong>Armstrong</strong>, as<br />

Christ's apostle in this end time, is<br />

being led as alway s byOod the<br />

Father and Christ the Son.<br />

God truly does work. however . in<br />

mysterious ways. He gives us'faith,<br />

and we pray and we hope for ' the<br />

miracle that will save us from our<br />

most dreaded fears, 'from our worst<br />

afflictions.. He has answered our<br />

prayers this time; a miracle has occurred<br />

. He has intervened 10 restore<br />

life and vigor to Christ's apostle.<br />

1 would .like to share a little bit ~ f<br />

my own experience of witnessing the<br />

miracl e that unfolded before my<br />

eyes. 1would like to share a bit of the<br />

drama , a bit of the story that now can<br />

and should be told . Little did Mr.<br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> or 1 suspect-that congestive<br />

heart failure ' would strike him<br />

down so suddenly 14 months ago<br />

when we returned after a worldwide<br />

journey from the middle of the African<br />

continent . ·Little did we know<br />

thatmore than one time in a threeweek<br />

period he would be on the<br />

threshold of death, that during this<br />

three-week period he would in fact<br />

die 'as he has written to you, and that<br />

he would bave .to be revived by<br />

mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and by<br />

manual heart massage . Little did we<br />

know that many ; in high places,<br />

within the Work, would write him off<br />

as ,dead. would write him off as<br />

buried, would write him off as never<br />

to return. And little did weknow that<br />

many in high places, seemingly free<br />

.to abandon God' s Way and God' s<br />

laws, would be so willing to do so.<br />

- Yes, the first few weeks of Mr.<br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> 's illness were very critical<br />

indeed. Yes, Mr . <strong>Armstrong</strong> did<br />

die - yet he was revived . But the<br />

living GOd in His mysterious ways<br />

saw fit to let some remain blinded to<br />

Me. <strong>Armstrong</strong>'s recovery, even<br />

while he caused Mr . <strong>Armstrong</strong> to<br />

give evidence of his recovery and to<br />

give everyone the opportunity to<br />

realize that the miracle had indeed<br />

occurred. But just as the Jews in<br />

Christ's time refused to recognize the<br />

Messiah so long awaited, SOtoo those<br />

in high places refused to believe Me.<br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> was alive and well.<br />

the right thing in God's eyes.<br />

Mr . <strong>Armstrong</strong> consented and said<br />

nothing about the rebellion and said<br />

nothing about the decisions. Mr .<br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> was assured that he need<br />

not remain for the conference because<br />

he was further assured that doctrines<br />

"of this Church would not be<br />

discussed and would not in any way<br />

be involved at the ministerial confer ­<br />

ence. Me. <strong>Armstrong</strong> and I returned<br />

to Tucson , Ariz., after we each addressed<br />

the ministers. Me. <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

related much of what I have<br />

now told you about his miraculous<br />

recovery, and I spoke on the need for<br />

unity, love, harmony and coopera-<br />

well as the basic purpo se of the .<br />

Ch urch, are immutable also : We<br />

know, or should know. that we can<br />

reach an understa nding of what those<br />

doctrines are, as well as the resolution<br />

other words", God gave Mr . <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

another chance to render to<br />

Him that accounting that Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

always knew he would have ro<br />

render, because he has always said he<br />

is accountable to God . He gave him<br />

another chance to render that ac ­<br />

counting after making all of the cor ­<br />

rections that were necessary before<br />

the accounting would have to be ultimately<br />

submitted and -he gave Mr.<br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> an opportunity to take all<br />

the steps necessary to ensure that<br />

God's Work would be done , that<br />

God 's ways would be preserved,<br />

even if God should decide in his wisdom<br />

and 'mercy that Mr . Armstron g<br />

will not be able to complete it in his<br />

lifetime.<br />

Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong> has told people<br />

that he could very well outlive all of<br />

· us and ' J believ e that very , very<br />

strongly, and we all hope that Mr.<br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> will be able to complete<br />

, the Work, jfthat is what God's overall<br />

plan has provided for Mr. <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

. But, if not, Mr . <strong>Armstrong</strong> 's<br />

timely action , as a result of the two<br />

· miracles as I have seen them , his<br />

timely ,measures, his timely actions<br />

"willensure that the Workwill bedone.<br />

Faith enhanced<br />

. So, brethren, there were two mira- .<br />

cles that the living God performed for<br />

the direct benefit this time of His<br />

Work . Miracle s 'performed before<br />

our eyes, if we were simply of the<br />

mind to see them . Is there any wonder<br />

that my faith has been enhanced a -,<br />

thousand-fold! Should there be any'<br />

doubt that there is a living God in the '<br />

minds of any of you. Is there any<br />

· doubt in your mind now that this is<br />

the true Church , the only Church and<br />

a Work.of the living God and not a<br />

work of mere men . " ' :<br />

<strong>Armstrong</strong> speak here again in Tucson<br />

and from time to time maybe some of<br />

my comments given in forums or else<br />

reach you by cassette or videotape. I<br />

cannot thank you enough for your<br />

letters of encouragement, of support<br />

and of your prayers for me, for my<br />

wife, my children . for Mr : <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

and Mrs. <strong>Armstrong</strong> . Please<br />

your forum , J was moved to express<br />

appreciation for you and all you have<br />

done for the Work . Many years ago,<br />

before you were baptized, Mr . <strong>Armstrong</strong><br />

often told us about your great<br />

service on behalf of the Church . We<br />

thank God for you and ask Him to<br />

bless you mightily. Word came .that<br />

you were baptized and I was jubilant,<br />

happy, thankful, for Jknew your work<br />

would be more effective than ever.<br />

" Since the traumatic events in the<br />

last few months, my heart went out to'<br />

you almost as much as to Mr. ~A rm ­<br />

strong . I prayed for you, felt for you<br />

and always felt very thankful for you.<br />

"The Irials have been a bit severe,<br />

but they have caused ju st about<br />

everyone to know for sure whether<br />

they had built their house on sand or<br />

I took this opportunity very<br />

to spe ak to several HUNDRED<br />

people at once! I had ne ver<br />

spoken to that many hefore .<br />

I spent the preceding' week<br />

preparing rather extensive notes<br />

But, $2 .50every week! WOW!<br />

That was almost as much as my<br />

entire salary had been ! And I had<br />

just previously renounced even<br />

Today, $2 .50 per half-hour<br />

broadcast seems incredibly<br />

complaint about M,. Dugger<br />

" running things" and assumi ng<br />

all authority, he adroitly appointed<br />

, CHOOSING) to he the Board ofthe<br />

12 and appo inted himself chair ­<br />

man of the Board of Seven to<br />

handle the money . This gave him<br />

absolute authority, while he pretended<br />

to give it to the " 12."<br />

Instead of remaining loyal , he<br />

proceeded to joi n a C.O . Dodd ,<br />

in Salem, W.Va., insetting up<br />

what they termed the "Bible or'<br />

ganization " of the Church and<br />

made every effort to take Stanherry<br />

followers with him .<br />

At Stanherry , they had heen<br />

organized under a biannual gen­<br />

biblical fo rm of-organization ~<br />

(which God 's Church d oe's follow<br />

today), it was a ridiculous<br />

twistin g out of context of biblical<br />

scriptures.<br />

BUI ~e in Oregon at that time<br />

were CONFUSED on the subjec t of<br />

biblical C hurch organization.<br />

Mr . Dugger had made it sound as<br />

if hi: had ,put together a trul y<br />

" BIBLE organization ."<br />

The brethren of the Oregon<br />

Conference were confused, but<br />

they did want to do whatever was<br />

the Bible way. They did notgo<br />

with this Dugger organization<br />

immediately, due to this confusian.<br />

Most of them lived too far<br />

away from Eugene to attend regu ­<br />

larly w ith God's Church at<br />

Eugene (we'soon bought a church<br />

property- in Eugene) .<br />

Off to a good start<br />

The Work of God was already<br />

off to a good start at Eugene . I<br />

had soon appointed Claude Ellis<br />

as elder and :II.., Mr . J.M . Day,<br />

(past 80 years of age) and Mr.<br />

W .E . Conn and Mr. O scar<br />

Heibel as deacons, in addition to<br />

Mr . Fisher .<br />

The Dugger people had, without<br />

my knowledge, put my name<br />

down as one of "the 70 leadin g<br />

, elders ,"<br />

The truth is, I) we were all<br />

confused as to Church organ izerion<br />

, and 2) we did not yet realize<br />

ourselv es that CHRIST had started,<br />

in us, the Philadelphia era of His<br />

Ch urch, committed with the<br />

a couple of generations or more<br />

hefore my time , a Church of ·<br />

more vitality and larger member­<br />

: ship . But they had dwindled to<br />

the state of Revelation 3: I - still<br />

h aving the NAME of the true<br />

Church but SPIRITUALLY DEAD .<br />

Apparently a generation or two<br />

before my time . the y had not<br />

been so spiritually dead.<br />

Truly God's Work<br />

Butnow, l knew that what God<br />

had led me into wa s , truly, GOD'S<br />

WORK! it had vita lity . It was bearing<br />

rich fruit. And , after find ing .<br />

the identification in' Revelat ion<br />

3:1-6 and verses 7-11. I finally<br />

carrie 10 re a li ze where GOO 'S<br />

TRUE CHURCH WAS! T hese people<br />

at Stanberry and Salem, originally<br />

, had been tru ly the Ch urch<br />

of God - of the Sardi s era . But<br />

the ir era was over, and by the,<br />

fruit s, loo king at them. I came to<br />

realize God was raisi ng up<br />

t he Ph iladelphia era o f His<br />

Church. .<br />

And. as we grew, God was<br />

showing me HIS B1B'LE FORM OF<br />

CH URCH ORG ANIZ ATION .<br />

Mrs. Gombo (a native of Morocco<br />

who now reside s north of Haifa , Israel)<br />

has been interested in bapti sm<br />

for severalyears and was last visited<br />

months ago by Great Britain mini s­<br />

ter, Paul Suckling. -<br />

Since Mrs. Gombo speaks Hebrew<br />

and French fluently but only a few<br />

words of English , .prebaptism coun ­<br />

seling was aided by the expert tran s­<br />

lating of Yonah, a young Jewi sh girl<br />

from Canada , And, thus, Simha<br />

Gamba became onl y the second person<br />

there, with, as I remember, about<br />

every Sab bath afternoon at my<br />

But thi s was too scattered, and<br />

soon we purchased the small '<br />

ChUICh building in Eugene.<br />
