Hereford BreediNg

You need only look at the trends in genetic 

improvement the Hereford breed has engineered 

in the past decade to understand the sudden 

resurgence in the breed’s commercial popularity. 

Since 2002 the Hereford breed has lowered birth weight 

expected progeny difference (EPD) by 8%, saved 1% more 

calves due to calving ease, increased its weaning weight 

and yearling weight EPD by 11 and 17 lb., respectively, 

improved ribeye area EPD by a quarter of an inch, and 

begun to move the needle on marbling. 

Considering the lengthy generation interval of the beef 

cattle industry and the time that it takes to move the average 

of an entire population for a single trait, these are quite 

remarkable results. However, what is even more remarkable 

is that the rate at which we wish to improve the population 

across the entire economic profile of EPDs might possibly 

double with more reliable accuracy in our younger, 

unproven sires and through more selection intensity on 

traits where the breed needs improvement. 

Since 2002 the Hereford breed has increased artificial 

insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (ET) use by 64%. In 

2012, 25% of all calves registered were either AI or 

ET calves. 

An estimated 40% of the registered Hereford cow 

inventory was artificially inseminated at least one time 

last year. Couple this trend with the prospects of greater 

EPD accuracy of young sires through the advances in 

genomic technology; we will begin to see amazing strides 

in the improvement across all traits that are, in many cases, 

antagonistic with one another. 

In 2012 the top 20 Hereford sires, based on the number 

of registrations, accounted for more than 10% of all calves 

registered. Bull studs that are predominantly selling semen 

to commercial cow-calf operations own half of the sires. 

The genetic profiles of these sires give us a very strong sense 

for where the breed is headed based on the demand for 

these genetics. 

Within the “AI Book,” you will find bulls that have a 

new designation next to their EPD profiles — GE-EPD. 

Bulls that possess the new genomic-enhanced (GE) EPD 

designation have been DNA tested at AHA’s official 

laboratory — GeneSeek Inc. — with what is called a 50K 

chip that has been “trained” by geneticists to identify 

Hereford-specific gene markers that have both a positive and 

negative influence on economically relevant traits. 

The influence of these new GE-EPDs is much more 

relevant in young, unproven herd sires than older, proven 

sires because of the scarcity of information on young bulls 

that attributes to their low accuracy. More accuracy means 

more reliability, and the AHA is gradually improving the 

accuracy of young sires by using this technology. 

(See figure 1) 

As more breeders choose to test their animals using the 

50K chip, the genotype database will grow larger, allowing 

animal geneticists to continually improve the predictive 

quality of the 50K chip. With these advancements, younger 

bulls will eventually become even more accurate and reliable 

than they are today. 

This new technology has the potential to change the 

game in traditional seedstock breeding. Focusing selection 

pressure on traits that need improvement through the use 

of reliable and accurate EPDs is the road map to rapidly 

moving the Hereford population in a specific direction. 

Already, the technology is making strides on those traits 

easy to measure, but the real advantage will be when the 

technology identifies gene markers that impact 

hard-to-measure yet highly economic traits like fertility 

and feed efficiency.

Trait Leader designation — An expected progeny difference (EPD) in a yellow box throughout 

the 2013 AI Book, indicates that the bull is considered a trait leader for that particular trait. 

The criteria for establishing trait leaders is based on the breed average EPD for the trait and the 

amount of variability in the EPDs observed for that trait across all animals in the Hereford breed. 

A bull must be at least one standard deviation above the breed average value for the trait to be 

considered a trait leader.
