History
Prior to the arrival of the first European settlers in 1837, the area
that is now Orlando was occupied by the Seminole tribe of Native
Americans. The “Town of Orlando” was incorporated on July 31,
1875 with an area of 4 square miles. The development of Walt
Disney World in 1971 spurred a construction boom that included
apartment buildings, hotels, banks, commercial shopping areas,
and tourist-related businesses. Today, the City of Orlando as a
result of numerous annexations has an area of over 100 square
miles and is still located entirely within Orange County. Tourism
is still the city’s primary industry, but Orlando has also developed
a reputation for high tech businesses and industries both related
and unrelated to the entertainment industry.
