Tasting Extravaganza
Our Council will host a Wine & Beer Tasting
Extravaganza fundraiser on Friday September 30
from 6:30 PM – 10:30 PM. Tickets are $20.00 for
the event.

St. Jude’s Bowl for Life
Highland Knights of Columbus Council
1580 is proud to sponsor the first annual
“Bowl for Life” fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s
Research Hospital. This fundraiser will
be held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 7:00
p.m. at Poplar Junction in Highland. There
will also be a silent auction, 50/50 drawing, heads and tails and
a guaranteed attendance prize for each bowler. The silent
auction will end at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $20.00 per person
which includes 3 games and shoes. So get together a team of
5 or 6 and come out and have a great time. Please call Mike

MADISON COUNTY FAIR
Thanks to all the shift leaders for
their time for calling the workers and filling
their shifts.
A special thanks to Paul Musenbrock,
Ken Klaus and Tom Alhmeyer for
setting up every morning.
Many hands make light work. Everything
went very well, we could have had
better weather but we have to make the best
of what we had. We are currently waiting
for a couple of bills. However, the total
proceeds for the week was $10,770.00.
The kid’s day at the fair had a very
poor showing because of the weather. All
of the participants had a very good day.
Thanks to all the workers who helped and
Kevin Heim for the entertainment.

The family of the month
award goes to a Brother Knight and
his wife, who continually provide
service and support to the Church,
community, and our K of C Council.
This Brother and his wife
always do whatever necessary when
called upon to help. They work the
fish fries, Madison County Fair, and
they are chairpersons for a stand at Kirchenfest.
They always donate their time to help at St.
Paul School fundraisers. They recognize the importance
of a Catholic education by sending their
children to St. Paul School.
It is with great honor that we have selected
as our August Family of The Month, Ed and Madonna
Fischer.

We Remain Strong
Even in unstable economic times, the Knights
of Columbus remains a cornerstone of financial stability
to its members and their families.
These statistics from the second quarter of 2011 help
tell the story:
• Earnings before dividends increased 16% to a record$214
million;
• Earnings after dividends were $30.5 million – more
than double last year’s level;
• Assets now total $17.7 billion – 10% more than a
year ago;
• Our surplus now stands at $1.7 billion;
• Our surplus ratio remains strong at 12.3%, well
above the industry 11.1% average;
• $3.7 billion of new insurance was issued;
• 3% guaranteed on 401k, Roth IRA, Traditional IRA,
Certificates of Deposit, and Annuities
Taken together, the above statistics represent
what is the best performance for the Knights of Columbus
Insurance in a decade. Remember, there is no
more highly rated insurer in North America than the

SENIOR KNIGHT of the month
August Senior Knight of the month goes to
a Brother Knight for his service to our Church, our
Council, and our community.
This Brother Knight has been a long time
member of the Knights of Columbus. He works in
the kitchen every month for our Bingos, he sings with
our Knight Time Singers, and he chairs the kitchen
for our annual sausage dinner. This brother knight
works the chicken stand at the Kirchenfest, he works
at the Schweizerfest, and he fries chicken at the
Madison County Fair, 3 shifts this past year.
It is with great appreciation that we give December’s
Senior Knight of the Month award to Gene
Bruggemann.

Knight of the Month
We have selected as September’s Knight of
the Month, a Brother Knight who continues to demonstrate
his commitment to the virtues of Charity,
Unity & Fraternity as an active member of our council.
This Brother Knight’s many contributions
include his volunteer shift services during the annual
tootsie roll fund drive and the sausage dinner.
Also, this Brother Knight participates in the
Knight Time Singers as he and other Brother Knights
provide musical entertainment for the various senior
living centers in the area.
Also, this Brother Knight volunteers his talents
at the annual children’s Christmas Party as well
as donning a white beard and red suit as he plays the
roll of Santa Claus at various nursing homes in the
area.
Additionally, this Brother Knight provides
musical entertainment at the Madison County Fair
during disability day to developmentally challenged
individuals from surrounding communities. He puts
very much effort in this endeavor as he sets up all of
his equipment, entertains with exuberance and gusto
and then at the end of the afternoon, breaks his equipment
down and packs everything up.
Our Brother Knight continues to set a great
example for dedicated service to our council and it is
with great appreciation and pride that we have selected
Kevin Heim as our Knight of the Month for
September 2011.

LADIES AUXILIARY NEWS

President Christine Gall presented Pat Korte with the Lady
of the Month Award. Pat has been a mainstay of the Auxiliary for
years. She assisted in every activity, held offices, chaired many
events and is a generous friend to all. She also serves as Eucharistic
Minister, Hospitality Minister and Kirchenfest volunteer to St. Paul
Parish.
Mystery Trip Chairperson, Mary Thole announced Oct. 1st
as the date for this year’s trip. SAVE THE DATE! Please be at
the Hall by 7:40 a.m. We will return around 6 p.m. Cost is $35 per
person. Members (and spouse or guest) can make reservations by
dropping off a check made out to the Auxiliary at St. Paul School/
Parish or mailing it to Mary Thole/14272 Baumann Road/Highland,
IL 62249.
The next Auxiliary Meeting is September 6th at 7 p.m. in the meeting
room.

NEWS FROM THE 4TH DEGREE
If you are a member of the 4th degree and have regalia, we would like to see you in the
honor guard. To the younger members of the 4th degree, consider acquiring regalia so that

you can help with the honor guard. Some of the senior members, who have been serving
for many years, can no longer participate. Don’t worry it is not hard to do. Contact Captain

EXEMPLIFICATION
There is an exemplification scheduled sometime in March of next year. I know that it
seems like a long time away but start thinking about becoming a member of the fourth degree. Some have already submitted
their application. If another exemplification is scheduled before March, I will let you know. If you have questions
about the fourth degree ask me or any fourth degree member for information.

In an effort to make our Assembly far more productive and meaningful to our members, we are planning some
events that should entice members to attend and to encourage 3rd degree members to advance to the 4th degree. Attend

TERM EXPLANATION
Term insurance is a bet. Each year we bet you are going to live and you bet you are going to die. We collect a premium
and if you die we will pay your beneficiaries. As you get older the odds of you dying get higher, so we want more
money. Eventually, at age seventy, the odds of you dying are too high and we don’t want to bet anymore. You go your way
and we go ours, all bets are off.
We have actuaries at the Home Office. An actuary is an accountant without all the personality. They can tell us
when you are going to die and we can make sure the Term policy will not be in force at that time. We are right about 99%
of the time.
Term insurance is extremely profitable for a company, and it is for us as well. The profits from the Term insurance
we sell go to support the dividends we pay on our permanent insurance. Term insurance serves a temporary purpose.
Term insurance is promoted by companies hoping never to pay a death benefit. The Knights of Columbus wants to
pay death benefits to our members and their families, which is why permanent insurance is so dear to us.
