transvaal indian youth congress
This song book has been compiled as a result of numerous
requests received by the Youth Congress from its members and supporters,
and from members of other organisations for a booklet containing
progressive, peace, workers, folk and international songs,
and songs which the various straggles of our people have given rise
to. Going through the songs — divided into various sections— you
will realise that the conpilation of a conprehensive and detailed
Song Book entails a great deal of research and money. Therefore,
this limited booklet. We hope , however, to supplement this edition
by publishing a special book of South African liberation songs—
songs which were b o m during the historic Defiance Campaign of 1952,
the mighty Congress of the People where the Freedom Charter was
adopted (1955)» the Treason Trial, the Campaigns against Bantu Education
and the Western Areas Removal Scheme, the Alexander and Bvaton
Bus Boycotts and othar campaigns— before they are forgotten and lost
in oblivion,.. .We wish to emphasise at this stage, that it is the
duty of the National Liberatory Movement to develop, encourage and
cultivate a"cultur£l wing" within the movement which we feel has
vast potentialities in strengthening the Liberation Front. The world
has shown us that the media of song, drama, dance etc. are important,
necessary and effective vehicles of organisation and prcpoganda.
The National Liberation Movements of India and China have shown
beyond any doubt the vital role a powerful cultural wing can play in
a people’s struggle for freedom.
Our main purpose in producing this booklet is to enhance the
Freedom Struggle and if the songs herein succeed in the recruitment
of even one active worker in the movement,then we are satisfied that
our efforts have been well-rewarded.
We would greatly appreciate if suggestions, criticisms and
songs for inclusion in a new book are forwarded to the TIXC, P.O.Box
WORLD YOUTH SONG.
( Song of the 101.million-strong WORLD FEDERATION OF DEMOCRATIC YOUTH.)
One great vision unites us,
Though remote be the lands of our birth,
Foes may threaten and smite us
Yet we live to bring peace to the earth;
Every country and nation,
Stirs vfith youth's inspiration,
Young folks are singing,
Happiness bringing,
Friendship to all the world,
CHORUS:
Everywhere the youth are singing freedom's song,
Freedom's song, freedom's song.
We rejoice to show the world that we are strong,
We are strong, we are strong.
We are the youth,
And the world acclaims our song of truth.
Everywhere the youth are singing freedom's song,
Freedom's song, freedom's song.
We remember the battle,
And the heroes who fell on the field,
Sacred blood running crimson,
Our invincible friendship has sealed.
All who cherish the vision,
Make the final decision,
Struggle for justice, peace and goodwill,
For peoples throughout the world. (CHORUS)
Solemnly our young voices
Take the vow to be true to our cause.
Vie are proud of our choices,
^e are serving humanity's laws.
Still the forces of evil
Lead the world to upheaval.
End useless dying.
Live for a happy world. (CHORUS)
SECTION 2 : WORiSRS SONGS.
Como all of you good workers,
Good news to you I'll tell,
Of how the good old Union
Has come in hsre to dwell,
Chorus;
Which side are you on? (^)
Page Five.
WHICH SIDE ARE YOU ON?
% daddy was a miner
And I'm a miner's son,
And I'll stick with my Union
Till every battle's won. (CHORUS)
Oh workers can you stand it?
Oh tell me if you can;
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man. (CHORUS)
They say in Harlem county
There are no neutrals there;
You either are a Union man
Or a scab for J.H.HLair. (CHORUS)
Don't scab for the bosses
Don’t listen to their lies;
Us poor folks ain't got a chance,
Unless we organise.
(CHORUS)
I WATERS THE WORKERS BEER.
I'm the man, the very fat man
That waters the workers' beer,
■And I'm the man, the very fat man
That waters the workers' beer;
And what do I care if it makes them ill,
I've a yacht and a car and an aeroplane,
And I waters the workers1 beer
When I makes the workers' beer,
I puts in strychnine,
Some methylated spirits
And a drop of paraffin.
But since a brew so terribly strong
Might make them terribly queer,
I reaches me hand for the water-tap
And I waters the workers' beer.
Now a drop of good beer is good for a man
Who's thirsty and tired and hot,
And I sometimes have a drop for myself
From a very special lot;
But a fat and healthy working class
Is the thing that I most fear,
So I reaches me hand for the water-tap
And I waters the workers’ beer
Now ladies fair, beyond compare,
And be ye maid or wife,
0 , sometimes lend a thought for one
Who leads a wandering life;
The water rates are shockingly high,
And meth. is shockingly dear,
And there isn't the profit there used to be
In watering the workers' beer.
UNION
I--.ID.
There once -was a union maid,
She never was afraid
Of settling debts and bosses threats,
And Special Branch dicks that made the raids.
She went to the union hall
When a meeting it was called,
And when old Sample1s boy1s came round
She always stood her ground.
Chorus;
Oh, you can't scare me,
I'm sticking to the Union,(3 )
Oh, you can't scare me,
I'm sticking to the Union,(2)
Till the day I die.
This Union made was wise
To the tricks of company firies;
She couldn't be fooled by a company stool,
She'd always organise the guys,
She'd always get her way
When she asked for better pay;
She'd show her card to the company guard,
And this is what she'd say: (CHORUS)
Now you gals who want to be free,
^ust take a tip from me;
Get you a man who's a union man,
And. fight together for liberty;
Married life ain't hard
When you got a union card,
And a Union man leads a happy life
When he's got a union wife (CHORUS)
( The "Sample " referred to is Colonel Sampie Prinsloo, Head of
the Security Police— the Special Branch.)
THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD AROUND.
(Music by Johan Sebastian Bach.)
Because all men are brothers,
Wherever men may be,
One Union shall unite us
Forever proud and free.
No fascist shall defeat us,
No nation strike us down.
All men who toil shall greet us
The whole wide world around.
Ily brothers are all others,
Forever hand in hand;
Wherever people struggle,
There is my native land.
My brothel's fears are my fears-
Yellow, White and Brown;
My brother's tears are my tears,
The whole wide world around.
Let every voice be thunder,
Let every heart be stone,
Until all tyrants perish
Our work shall not be done.
Let every pain be token;
The lost years shall be found.
Let slavery's chain be broken,
The whole wide world around.

( During the 1 thirties, at the time of the Spanish Civil
War, lovers of freedom and liberty throughout the world formed and
INTERNATIONAL BRIGADE to help the youg Spanish Republic in her
gallant fight against Fascism. Thus we found the "Abe. Lincoln
Brigade" from America and the " Thaelmann Battalion" from Germany
fighting side-by-side so that Democracy may emerge victorious. Unfortunately,
Democracy was crushed by the combined and overwhelming
forces of international fascism, but the music, literature and songs
of the Civil War has served and continues to serve as an inspiration
to all Democrats who,battled and are still battling to make this
world a free and peaceful one.)
Yet we haven’t even lost a homeland,
For our homeland is now outside Madrid.
Yet we haven’t even lost our homeland,
For our homeland is now outside-Madrid.
With our Spanish brothers in the trenches,
Devil take the hated foreign Legion,
Drive the bandit general to the sea.
Dreamed he'd be in Madrid, for the parade soon;
We came first, Franco's army was too late. (CHORUS)
With rifle, bomb and our machine guns
We'll exterminate the fascist plague;
Free all Spain of plunderers and pirates
Spanish brothers, Spain belongs to you.
Free all Spain of plunderers and pirates
Spanish brothers, Spain belongs to you.
(On the outskirts of Madrid, Hans Beimler, a German, was
killed by Franco's fascists while defending the City. This
song is dedicated to his memory.)
In Madrid's outlying trenches,
In the hour of danger grim,
With the international shock brigades,
His heart with hatred all ablaze,
Stood Hang the Commissar,
Stood Hans the Commissar.
Because he fought for freedom,
He was forced to leave his home;
Near the blood-stained Manzanares
Where he led the fight to hold Madrid,
Died Hans the Commissar,
Died Hans the Commissar.
A bullet came a-flying
From his fascist "Fatherland";
The shot struck home, the aim was true,
The rifle barrel well made too,
A German i»rmy gun,
A German Army gun.
With heart and hand I pledge you,
While I load my gun again,
You will never be forgotten,
Nor the enemy forgiven;
