From the
Chairman...
Good evening and welcome to our production of ‘The King and I’.
So many of you have mentioned to me how much you love this show since
hearing about our Autumn 2010 production. With its wonderful songs and opulent
setting ‘The King and I’ has won a place in many people’s hearts.
This is Rosemary Bianchi’s first production for Hitchin Thespians and it has been very
exciting to work with a director who has also created the scenery for the show with the
help of many of her students at North Herts College. We have been delighted to
welcome back Justin Thomas as Musical Director after a couple of years break and we
hope that we will see more of him in the future. I am sure you will enjoy watching many
familiar faces in our cast such as Tracey Gwynne, Steve Wilks, Kier Home, Melanie
Plowman and Lucy Miller-White. Maybe you will also spot a future leading man or
lady amongst the youngsters who have joined us for this show. I hope you enjoy this
production and look forward to your continued support in the future.
In the 1860s the King of Siam - in his attempt to
bring Western culture to his country - engages Anna
Leonowens, an attractive English schoolteacher, to teach
his royal princes and princesses. Once in the palace,Anna
is shocked to learn that she and her son will not get a
house of their own as had been promised her by the King.
She is also witness to the arrival of Tuptim brought from
Burma by Lun Tha, as a gift to the King of Siam. The King
is pleased with Tuptim, and turns a deaf ear to Anna's
complaints about having to live in the palace. He then
summons his children in a fine procession to meet Anna.
After they leave Lady Thiang arouses Anna's sympathy for
Tuptim by explaining that Tuptim and Lun Tha are deeply
in love, and that once Lun Tha returns to Burma they will
never again see each other.Anna can be duly sympathetic,
for she can never forget how much she had loved her
husband Tom, now dead.
The King confesses that he is not sure of anything at all,
that he does not know how much his children should be
taught and what is right or wrong. But Anna has no such
qualms. After she and the children become acquainted
with each other, a unique bond of empathy and
affection develops between teacher
and pupils. Meanwhile, Tuptim and Lun
Tha meet secretly in the darkness of the
palace garden to exchange love vows.
A crisis is developing in Siam. An agent
in Singapore has discovered letters to
The King and I was based on the book
‘Anna and the King of Siam’ by Margaret
Landon. The plot comes from the memoirs
of Anna Leonowens, who became school
teacher to the children of King Mongkut
of Siam in the early 1860s.
The musical opened on Broadway in
1951 and was the sixth collaboration for the
team of Rodgers and Hammerstein. It ran for 1,246
performances, winning the Tony Award for Best
Musical, among other awards. It spawned numerous
The STORY
STAGE AND SCREEN
revivals and a popular 1956 film version,
starring Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr.
This most popular of Rodgers &
Hammerstein’s musicals has spawned
many recent revivals, most notably being
the 2000 London production and the
Royal Albert Hall revival in 2009, starring
Elaine Paige and Maria Friedman respectively.
There has also been a highly rated non-musical
1999 movie ‘Anna and the King’, starring Jodie
Foster and Chow Yun-Fat.

the British describing the King of Siam as a barbarian
and suggesting that Siam be made a protectorate. This
information upsets Anna, for despite her differences
with the King, she has come to admire him. When the
King tells her of his political difficulties and advises
her that Sir Edward Ramsey and other high-ranking
English men and women are coming to visit Siam and
judge for themselves, Anna suggests that they be
entertained in grand style, with a European dinner and
ball. In another part of the palace, Lun Tha and Tuptim
are making plans to run away together.
The visiting English are entertained with a ballet, ‘The
Small House of Uncle Thomas’, in which Uncle Tom's
Cabin is translated in terms of a Siamese dance. Both
Anna and the King are exhilarated by the success of their
efforts. Suddenly Tuptim is brought to the King. She has
been caught red-handed trying to escape. The King orders
that she be whipped, but Anna fiercely takes her part
and prevents the King from carrying out this order. Lun
Tha however, has been killed. By now Anna feels that she
can stay in Siam no longer and makes plans to return
to England. Before she can leave, the King falls
seriously ill. On his death-bed he implores
her to stay in Siam. When the royal
children join in this entreaty Anna cannot
find it in her heart to leave a country,
a people and, most of all, the pupils she
has come to love.

THE COMPANY

Steve Wilks
The King of siam
Steve is very happy to be reprising his leading role of ‘The King’
in this production, having first played the part for us in 2001.
You will have seen him last playing ‘Tevye’ in last year’s production
of ‘Fiddler On The Roof’ but his other numerous leading roles for us
and other local societies have included Higgins in ‘My Fair Lady’,
Emile in ‘South Pacific’, Escamillo in ‘Carmen’, Pirate King in ‘Broadway
Pirates of Penzance’, Pilate in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, Judas in
‘Godspell’, Cervantes in ‘Man of La Mancha’, Adam in ‘Seven Brides
for Seven Brothers’, Billy Bigelow in ‘Carousel’, Captain in ‘Titanic’ and
Rico in ‘Copacabana’.
Tracey Gwynne
Anna Leonowens
Tracey is thrilled to be playing the part of ‘Mrs Anna’ in this production
as she tells us it is one of her favourite musicals. You will have seen
her last playing an unrecognisable ‘old biddy’ in ‘The Music Man’, our
last production.
Tracey’s many leading roles for us and various local societies have
included Lucy in ‘Jekyll & Hyde’, Florence in ‘Chess’, Sally Bowles in
‘Cabaret’, Nellie in ‘South Pacific’, Mrs Barnum in ‘Barnum’, Yum-Yum
in ‘The Mikado’, Millie in ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’, Mercedes in
‘Carmen’, Kate in ‘Kiss Me Kate’, Anne in ‘Half A Sixpence’, Squeaky
Fromme in ‘Assassins’ and both Julie and Carrie in ‘Carousel’.
When not on stage, Tracey is a designer and illustrator and has been
known to make a lot of noise on a drum kit!

Lucy Miller-White
LADY THIANG
THE COMPANY
Lucy made her public singing debut aged 6, singing live on local BBC
radio with her older sister! She joined Hitchin Thespians in 1999 and
has been involved in almost every show since, if not performing on
stage, then behind the scenes. During that time, she has played a
number of roles including Valencienne in ‘The Merry Widow’, Joanie in
‘The Full Monty’ (both in Hitchin and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival),
Cora in ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ and more recently,Alma Hicks in ‘The
Music Man’. Apart from the shows, Lucy can be more often heard
singing in recitals as well as with choirs both locally and in London. In
recent years, she has enjoyed singing in various fund raising concert
performances for Thespians, Breakthrough Breast Cancer and also an
Opera Evening for Benslow Music Trust, where she was able to indulge
in her main passion for singing opera. She has really enjoyed working
with her fellow cast members in ‘The King and I’ and is looking forward
to what promises to be a very emotionally charged week!
Iain Rutherford
Captain Orton
Iain thought he had retired from the stage after 48 years of involvement
in amateur theatre, during which time he has played principal parts
including Tommy in ‘Annie Get Your Gun’, Kenneth Gibson in ‘Call Me
Madam’, Charlie Cameron in ‘Brigadoon’ and ‘Lun Tha in an earlier
production of ‘King and I’. He has also been Musical Director for
the Young Arcadians and the Noteable Youth Choir, and also piano
accompanist for several operatic societies locally and in different parts
of the country, playing also in the pit orchestra. More lately he has
been content to sing with the Thespians Choir, occasionally as soloist,
but the opportunity to play Captain Orton (a role with few lines and
where the Scots accent will not go amiss) was too inviting to resist!

THE COMPANY
Kier Home
Lun tha

Kier has spent most of his life on stage, mostly with Hitchin
Thespians and his first musical was coincidentally ‘The King And I’
for us in 1991. You will have seen him most recently appearing as
our ‘barber-shop tenor’, Jacey Squires in our recent production of
‘The Music Man’ but Kier has played many roles for us - Fydeka in
last year’s production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, an Apostle in ‘Jesus
Christ Superstar’, Hortensio in ‘Kiss Me Kate’ and various chorus
roles. His favourite role to date though has been Anthony in our
production of ‘Sweeney Todd’.
When he’s not involved in a show, Kier is either working here at the
Gordon Craig Theatre Box Office, at home listening to ‘The Rat
Pack’ or with his nose in a book somewhere!
Melanie Plowman
Tuptim
Melanie joined Hitchin Thespians as one of the ‘animated townsfolk’
in ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’. Since then she has taken part in
all of their productions with a brief flirtation as props manager working
backstage for the last show. Her favourite roles include Susan in
‘Calamity Jane’, Nellie in ‘Jekyll and Hyde’, Ruth in ‘Thoroughly Modern
Millie’, Susan Hershey in the ‘Full Monty’ (both in Hitchin and at the
Edinburgh Fringe Festival) and Tzeitel in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. She is
also a member of the Lytton Players where she performed as Caroline
Neville in ‘Titanic’. Aside from shows, Melanie enjoys singing with the
choir and participating in fundraising performances at Woodside
Hall such as ‘That Ole Devil Called Love’. Melanie (and her husband
Richard, the assistant stage manager) are very pleased that she has left
the production team and is back on stage for ‘The King and I’ - although
she confesses she will miss dancing in the wings with the crew!

THE COMPANY
Charles Langford
The Krahlahome
Charles has been a member of Hitchin Thespians since 2000. He
has performed in many of the shows since then, most recently as
Motel the Tailor in last years production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’.
His other favourite roles have included Tobias in 'Sweeney Todd',
Cornelius in 'Hello Dolly', Demetrius in 'A Midsummer Night's
Dream' (The Lytton Players), and Bossy Barbara in ‘Beauty and the
Beast’. He says his most memorable experience was performing
at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007 playing Malcom in ‘The
Full Monty’. His last principal role for us was the Arbiter in 'Chess'.
He says he is looking forward to working with the wonderful
company in ‘The King & I’.
Mike Roberts
SIR Edward
Ramsay
Mike has been a member of Hitchin Thespians for 26 years. He and
his family have always been involved in musical theatre and indeed he
met his wife Carolyn whilst performing in ‘West Side Story’ with Hitchin
Thespians back in 1985. As well as performing with Thespians, the
Roberts family are also involved in a theatre group in Sandy who are
currently rehearsing for their next Panto, ‘Robin Hood’. Mike has had a
few roles over the years, most recently as Oliver Hix being one quarter
of the barber shop quartet in ‘The Music Man’.
Mike is pleased to see his daughters following the family tradition and
in fact this show really is a family affair with Carolyn, Mike and both
their daughters (Emma and Charlie) treading the boards tonight.

THE COMPANY
Sam Rayner
Prince Chululongkorn
Sam tell us he has been ‘tormenting’ audiences since the age of six, when he appeared in
the Thespians’ previous production of ‘The King and I’. Nineteen musicals, three plays and
several concerts later Sam is thrilled to be revisiting the show that started it all. His
favourite stage outings include Tobias in ‘Sweeney Todd’, Ralph in ‘The Lord of the Flies’,
MC in ‘Cabaret’ in the Breakthrough Charity Concert 2010, Avigdor in ‘Yentl’, Mendel and
(bizarrely) Yente in ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, and Will Parker in ‘Oklahoma’. Outside the world
of theatre, Sam rows for his school and is being ‘tormented again’ by his A-levels. He has
loved working with the Hitchin Thespians on ‘The King and I’ and is eagerly anticipating
the rise of the curtain.
Andrew Davies
Louis Leonowens
This is 13 year old Andrew’s third show with the Hitchin Thespians where he
previously enjoyed playing Winthrop in our last production of ‘The Music Man’. He
is also a member of the Young Thespians and has made lots of friends over the last
three years, doing many shows including ‘Aladdin’, ‘Oklahoma’ and ‘Below Stairs’.
He goes to The John Henry Newman school in Stevenage where his favourite
subjects are maths, science, music and languages. He was also lucky enough to
recently visited Budapest in Hungary with the school choir. Andrew enjoys learning
to play the piano at school, and the double bass at Stevenage Music Centre on
Saturday mornings.
Michael Bailes
Interpretor

‘The King and I’ will be Michael’s third show with Hitchin Thespians, but he has
been a member of Young Thespians for 6 years. His favourite roles have included
Captain Smolsky in ‘Bugsy Malone’, Badger in ‘Wind in the Willows’, Andrew Cairns in
‘Oklahoma’ and Mr Town in ‘Below Stairs’. Michael is currently studying Interactive
Media at The Centre for the Arts in Hitchin and looks forward to following his family’s
footsteps in theatre!
