THE NEWSLETTER OF ST. NORBERT & OUR LADY OF THE BROOK YOUTH MINISTRY
September 2012
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY 2012 was a great success! This was our seventh year working with Harbor Habitat.
Our 16 year olds and older were each able to experience the construction site for at least a day; and those who were
under 16 enjoyed the variety of other sites we worked at such as Boys & Girls Club Of Benton Harbor, Mosaic Resale,
First Assembly Of God, and Habitat ReStore. Thanks to Trinity Lutheran School and their Youth Minister Josh Wold
for being so kind to host us for home site. Week 1 enjoyed a delicious lunch which was compliments of the downtown
St. Joseph’s Jimmy John’s; and Week 2 enjoyed a lunch and block party hosted by Harbor Habitat For Humanity.
Thank you to the Garrity family for inviting us for snacks and a swim at their beach house on Week 2. A big thank you
goes out to all parents and/or young adults who prepared and served us dinner each night and to all families who
donated food and groceries for the week. Habitat 2012 was an uplifting week of service and community, and the teens
did an amazing job in reaching out to “Give A Little Bit” through acts of kindness. Our Peer Ministry Leaders did a
fantastic job of guiding and leading, and their prayer services held each Saturday night were awesome. A service trip
such as this could never happen without adult supervision, and we were blessed with an excellent team of adult leaders
for both weeks. Thank you to all our adult leaders as you gave a little bit of your life to everyone on Habitat 2012!
TEEN SERVICE WEEK 2012, held at Maria High School in Chicago, was an awesome experience. Enthusiastic
teen and adult volunteers dedicated a week of their summer to create a “Beloved Community.” They lived out the
theme “Beloved Community” through reaching out to various social service agencies in the Chicagoland area. Teen
Service Week prides itself on addressing Catholic Social Teaching which comprises those aspects of Catholic doctrine
which relate to matters dealing with the collective aspect of humanity. Teen Service Week is a testimonial to caring
for those marginalized in our society! St. Norbert & Our Lady Of The Brook Parishes are very proud to have sent four
of its High Schoolers and four Adult Leaders on TSW. Should you see one of the individuals mentioned below, please
commend them on their commitment to helping others!
TEEN SERVICE WEEK 2012
BELOVED COMMUNITY
Thank you to the Orbon Family for hosting such a wonderful
Mass/Barbecue/Pool Party for our Youth Ministry!!!
It was a beautiful celebration, and it was a great way
to greet and meet our German Visitors,
Caro Schulz, Arne von Berswordt,
Hendrik Becker, and Marcel Heistermann!
Thank you to Fr. Francis for celebrating Mass with us!!!
IN LOVING MEMORY
The heart of our Youth Ministry is the teens! St. Norbert Youth Ministry lost three young men this
summer who were involved in all aspects of our Youth Ministry. Our hearts are aching. We grieve the
loss of Billy Garrity, Ryan McCarthy, and Kyle Caraher. The teens gathering at St. Norbert Church
when they received such tragic news each time is a tribute to their faith and where they go to find solace.
On both weeks of Habitat For Humanity we held candlelit vigils. Cam Swanson and his mom Becky led
the prayer vigil the first week, and Mary Claire Seeberg and her dad Tom led it the second week with
Mary and Mark by their sides. We were all sitting atop the hill at Silver Beach in St. Joseph, Michigan,
as the sun began to set. Each person there received a beautiful coin of remembrance. One side of the
coin says “In Loving Memory”; and the other side reads “Gone yet not forgotten, although we are apart,
your spirit lives within me, forever in my heart.” Billy, Ryan, and Kyle remain in the hearts of all those
who knew them. I ask that everyone keep their families in your prayers!
Thanks to Cam Swanson and his mom, Becky Swanson,
for supplying the coins and the candles for our vigils!
BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN
FAITH & EVERYDAY LIFE WITH TEENS
Selected Sunday Evenings – 6:30-7:30
Hosted by St. Norbert’s Church, we are continuing our wonderful BTG program for high schoolers.
Once a month on Sunday evenings throughout the year, following the 5:30 mass, we will join together in
St. Norbert’s Church Basement in the Vineyard for dinner and discussion. We have pizza and soda, and
we discuss things that affect your everyday life and how your faith helps you with these challenges. The
evenings are scheduled to last an hour, but we will continue longer if it seems appropriate. You and your
peers are integral in deciding what topics would interest high schoolers. Maggie Bruce and Judy Klein
are the adults facilitating the program. Jimmy Thomas is our adult leader guiding discussions.
Please come join us and help us all Bridge The Gap Between Faith & Everyday Life!!!
dinner (salad, rolls, dessert, or drinks). We leave from the
Church steps at 5:00 p.m. and return at 8:30 p.m. It is
helpful if you sign up a week before so we know the meal is
covered and that we have enough drivers. Please sign up
through the event post on our Facebook Group or call
very important service for those less fortunate than us; and it
is fun, too!
