Evelyne and Henry Milorin of Medford
were recently honored with the
Arc of East Middlesex’s top award
for advocacy on behalf of children and
adults with developmental disabilities. The
Milorins were presented with the Lucie
Peabody Marriott. Past recipients include
Dr. Allen Crocker of Children’s Hospital
and Gerald J. Morrissey, Jr., Commissioner
of the Department of Mental Retardation.
“Evelyne and Henry are inspirational in
“Evelyne and Henry are inspirational
in their efforts promoting full
inclusion for people with disabilities”
— JO ANN SIMONS
In 1995, the Milorins’ son Reggie joined
the Arc’s vocational program. He has become
famous for the beautiful necklaces he
creates in the Arc’s Natural Elegance jewelry
studio. When Reggie was approaching the
age of 22, Evelyne offered her help to the
Arc of Massachusetts as an advocate for
adult services. Her interest in public policy
led to her becoming a Barbara Gopen
Fellow in 2002. Evelyne’s Fellowship year
focused on putting information for parents
raising children with disabilities on audio
cassette-tapes. The cassette-tapes are in
two languages, English and Haitian Creole.
In addition, she created a video-tape about
Reggie’s independence, in all aspects of
his life. Evelyne also donated her time as
a member of the Arc of East Middlesex’s
Board of Directors.
Outstanding Advocates - Henry and Evelyne
Milorin (center) were recently honored by the Arc
of East Middlesex with the Lucie Cripps Award for
advocacy on behalf of children and adults with
disabilities. Shown congratulating them are Jo
Ann Simons (far left), Executive Director and Lucie
Cripps, a long term member of the Arc Board of
Directors for whom the award was named.
The year after her Gopen Fellowship, Evelyne was
selected for a prestigious Kennedy Fellowship and
spent 2003 in Washington DC, working on IDEA (the
federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act)
reauthorization. She also translated a book about inclusion
into Haitian Creole. Following her time in Washington,
Evelyne earned a Master’s Degree in Health
Administration at Suffolk University and now works
as a Community Organizer for the Boston Center for
Independent Living.
Throughout the years, using the experience he
acquired in advocating for Reggie, Henry has assisted
working-class and immigrant residents, especially those
of Haitian origin. He helped start programs in adult
basic education and job readiness, as well as computer
classes and open access to technology for seniors,
adults and youth.
Henry’s volunteer efforts led to his employer, Fidelity
Investments, donating furniture for the Arc of
East Middlesex’s expanding programs. Henry is fully
committed to building a consumer-driven community
that supports a better quality of life for people with
developmental disabilities. He focuses on improving
Mother’s Day Musings
A Message from the Executive Director
If you are a mother, you probably remember your first Mother’s
Day. The one when you were actually a mother. You
were no longer just a daughter or wife. You might not remember
the actual day. I don’t. I do remember the circumstances
that made me a mother. I become a mother just a few days after
Mother’s Day in 1979 when my first child, Jonathan was born. It
wasn’t what I anticipated. He was born with Down syndrome and
4 heart defects. Every year, he reminds me with this affirmation,
“I made you a mother.” He continues with “I made you a mother
and I made Nana and Pa grandparents.” And something else.
He made me much more than that. He made me strong so I could stand tall next to the physicians
and surgeons whose life his hands were in. He made me trust those same doctors. He made me
strong so I could refuse to take him home from Children’s Hospital upon his birth until someone
from their Down syndrome program came to speak to me.
He made me persistent so I could spend countless hours prodding and cajoling a day care center to
accept him at 12 weeks and a summer camp when he was three. He made sure I was still persistent
in convincing an overnight camp to let him be the only camper with a disability.
He made me an advocate so I could articulate the needs of persons with developmental disabilities
to legislators, members of Congress and even Presidents.
He made me hopeful for a society where every member has value and worth.
He made me proud when he stole home on a wild pitch in Little League and was third in the world
in gold in Special Olympics. He made me proud when he graduated from high school and went on
to community college.
He made me strong so I could be there for him during 4 heart operations, endless other hospitalizations
and when I had to tell him he had to wear hearing aids and not go on carnival rides. He
amazed me when he accepted all the curve balls life has thrown him.
When he was 13, he was with me when I was at a bowling banquet for some of our residents and
when I came back to the table where he and his sister were sitting, he said something that stunned
me. He said, “You do this work because of me, don’t you?” It was a moment of great honesty because
he would now be able to relate himself to a group of adults with developmental disabilities.
So, I told him, “Yes, I do this because of you.”
So, now for that something else. On every Mother’s Day, he reminds me that he made me a mother
and he gave me my career. I couldn’t ask for better Mother’s Day gifts. I know your Mother’s Day
will bring you the same kind of gifts.
***
Recently someone gave me a bumper sticker. I think it was meant to mock all those bumper stickers
that brag about their kid making the honor roll. This one says, “My kid has more chromosomes
than yours.” I couldn’t be prouder.
