The Office of Human Resources (OHR) has recently implemented a Special
Recruitment to fill vacant FAA and CSLA positions. Milton Martinez, a state
retiree formerly with the State Personnel Office (SPO), joined OHR on a part-time
basis to coordinate this. His role is to place advertisements, evaluate applications,
and distribute employment lists to the hiring managers and supervisors. The goal of
this project is to fill positions more quickly than the previous method of recruiting
through SPO. Another benefit is that OHR only places individuals who meet the
qualifications for the job on the lists. This saves time and work for hiring
supervisors. It also eliminates the chance that the supervisor might select an
individual who does not meet the job requirements.
To assist with this effort, OHR has created a new webpage: Careers in HSD,
located on the OHR website at http://www.state.nm.us/hsd/careers.html. Careers in
HSD contains information and application forms for potential employees for all job
positions.
Caseworker applications in some areas are accepted on an ongoing basis and are
kept on file for 6 months. Vacancies are posted on the OHR webpage Careers in
HSD in the NM HSD Special Recruitments Weekly Summary. Vacancy
announcements may also be advertised in local newspapers and on other websites.
Applicants for FAA and CSLA positions should: complete the HSD Special
Recruitment Job Interest Form (JIF), provide an updated résumé or HSD one-page
application form and a copy of college transcripts for each position for which they
want to be considered.
FAA Senior positions are also part of the Special Recruitment and vacancies for
these positions are posted on the OHR webpage Careers in HSD in the NM HSD
Special Recruitments Weekly Summary. Individuals wishing to apply may do so
via e-mail, fax, or mail by the recruitment end date.
Inquiries regarding the status of an application should be directed to Milton
Martinez at 505-827-7769 (milton.martinez@state.nm.us). For general information,
please contact Mary Roybal, 505-827-7773 (mary.roybal@state.nm.us) or Marty
Ferraro, 505-827-7756 (marty.ferraro@state.nm.us).
HSD Employee Orientation is required for all HSD staff and held quarterly in
Santa Fe. These orientations include, but are not limited to: An introduction to
the department’s mission and philosophies, NM state employment policies; the
HSD Code of Conduct; Employee Development and Appraisals(EDA); diversity
awareness; payroll and the ATSS timekeeping system; insurance and benefits;
deferred compensation; and a tour of the Roundhouse. Two of the modules,
Sexual Harassment Awareness and Substance Abuse Awareness, are required
training sessions for all HSD employees.
New employees and those who have not attended
Orientation may register online at the OHR
Employee Information website, under Staff
Development and Training. Once the originator
enters “submit” on the electronic form, it
automatically goes to the employee’s supervisor
for approval. The supervisor can then forward the completed request to
Streamline Your Frequent Mailers
If you frequently e-mail to the same person this is how you can make it easier
on yourself: In Outlook, you can create a desktop shortcut that will open a
blank, pre-addressed message that's all ready for you to send. Here's how:
1. Right-click in an empty area of your desktop, point to New, and then
click Shortcut.
2. In the Create Shortcut dialog box, type mailto: and enter the e-mail
address of your recipient, leaving no spaces.
3. Click Next, and then choose a name for your shortcut, e.g., “Email to
Jane”
4. Click Finish, and your new shortcut appears on your desktop.
5. Double-click the icon, and Outlook opens with your recipient's address in
the To field. Just compose your message and send as normal. Cool!
Flag Day – Feb 24
This is the fifth in a series of Training Connection articles devoted to:
Business Writing for the Information Age
“…the ability to write simple direct prose that says precisely what you
want to say in the fewest words possible…” -Business Week
Be Positive in Tone
We all respond more favorably to something in writing when it is presented to
us in a positive tone rather than in a negative tone. Negativity produces instant
reader resistance. Consider these:
Negative: No smoking anywhere except the bar!
Positive: Smoking permitted in the bar only.
Negative: Positively no children admitted without an adult!
Positive: Children welcome when accompanied by an adult.
Negative: We cannot process applications received after June 10!
Positive: Please return the application before the June 10 deadline.
Avoid Negative Buzzwords
Some negative words convey an immediate strong resistance in the reader.
Consider your reaction to these powerful words:
botched infuriating shoddy
deceptive mishandled thoughtless
false misinformed uncooperative
incident misleading unfounded
incompetent regrettable unprofessional
inconsiderate rude unqualified
inept
second-rate
3
Use Positive Words
Positive words can convey the same message, and will elicit a more
cooperative reaction from your reader(s). Notice the difference in tone.
