Join us on a 10-day choir pilgrimage: June 9 - 18, 2014 • Daily Itinerary
Dear Saint Paul Parishioners and friends,
I invite you, your relatives, and your friends to join our parish choir for a
special excursion to Germany and Austria! We have planned a dynamic
itinerary and choral program for June 2014, our fifth tour to Europe.
Our journey begins in Berlin, the vibrant capital of Germany and one of
Europe’s most important cultural centers. We will visit nearby Pottsdam, a
UNESCO World Heritage-inscribed town, to see Sanssouci Palace, followed by
an afternoon in Leipzig where we will present an informal recital at the church
where J. S. Bach served for many years.
As we continue our journey to Bavaria, other cultural visits include unparalleled
cities of beauty: Dresden, Oberammergau, and Munich to see the
Marienplatz and the world famous Glockenspiel. Before departing Germany,
we will make a stop at Wieskirche and the much-fabled Neuschwanstein (King
Ludwig’s Castle).
Then, upon arriving in Salzburg, the hills will come alive with the sound of our
music! We will have the great opportunity to sing Sunday Mass at Salzburg
Cathedral! In Vienna, we will present a formal concert at Saint Stephen
Cathedral, known as the national emblem of Austria and a symbol of Austrian
identity. Singing in these two majestic cathedrals will be the highlight of this
memorable journey.
Please consider joining us as on this incredible journey of a lifetime!
Sincerely,
Dr. Stephen Schnurr
Director of Music, Saint Paul Catholic Church
Day3 June 11, Wednesday: Potsdam - Leipzig
Breakfast at your hotel. This morning, leave Berlin to visit Potsdam Sanssouci
Palace, part of the UNESCO World Heritage and one of famous Potsdam sights.
Potsdam Germany’s charm blends countless historical sights and the great nature
around Potsdam, Germany. Also, the Prussian rulers have been impressed by that
city just next door to the metropolis Berlin. In the 17th century, Elector Friedrich
Wilhelm of Brandenburg started to create a unique cultural landscape with castles
and parks representing the glory of Prussia. The town was expanded, representative
buildings were constructed, and Potsdam got its own nice flair. The Dutch
Quarter arose, formerly a settlement for Dutch immigrants, today a special attraction
for tourists. His son, Friedrich II ‘Frederick the Great,’ continued his work and
started in 1745 his most famous creation - the park and palace of Potsdam
Sanssouci. The palace—with 12 glamorous rooms, including a concert hall—is
located on top of a terraced vineyard, beautifully decorated in Rococo style. He
called it Sanssouci - in French, “without worries” - because here he could leave the
formalities of the royal court behind and had time for his hobbies, music and philosophy.
Continue to Leipzig, the city of trade fairs, books and music.
Independent lunch in Leipzig.
Informal recital at Thomaskirche (20 minutes-subject to confirmation). After recital,
our local guide will be ready to explore St. Thomaskirche, where the famous
Thomaner Choir originates. The Church owes its fame to Johann Sebastian Bach
who was the Cantor of the church from 1723 to 1750 and is buried there. Mozart
and Mendelssohn also performed there, and it is where Richard Wagner was
christened. We will view the largest collection of Bach archives in Germany at the
Bach Museum before ending the day with a walk around the swan lake to view
the Opera House. Check-in at hotel in Leipzig.
Dinner and overnight at hotel in Leipzig.
(D)
(B,D)
Day4 June 12, Thursday: Excursion to Dresden
excursion to visit Dresden. Upon arrival, our local guide
will be ready to take you on a walking tour of Dresden, see
the Residence Palace, Theater Square and the newly rebuilt
Frauenkirche. Visit the famous Zwinger Museum (entrance
fee included) and view the Semper Opera House where both
Weber and Wagner conducted. Independent lunch and
Siegestor—created by King Ludwig I in the middle of the
19th century — Pass by the Residenz; the palace of the kings
of Bavaria, and the Hofgarten. Continue to visit the
Asamkirche, one of the most richly decorated Rococo
churches in the world. Late afternoon, continue to Southern
Bavaria and the little village of Oberammergau.
Dinner and overnight at hotel in Oberammergau.
Day6 June 14, Saturday: Wieskirche - King Ludwig’s
Castle - Salzburg
Breakfast at your hotel. This morning, begin our day with a
visit to the Wieskirche (the Church in the Meadow),
Germany’s greatest Rococo-style church. This house of worship
looks like it floated down from heaven. (informal
recital at the Wieskirche)
Then, we continue to explore King Ludwig’s majestic castle,
the Cinderella-style Neuschwanstein and the King’s former
residence. This white and dream-like fortress was built in
1869 by sketches of a theatrical decorator that explains this
atmosphere. Go back to the times of Wagner as you visit the
royal apartments decorated with scenes from German sagas
and operas, the throne rooms, and music halls, with fine
Festival Operas. See Residenzplatz, the center square of
Salzburg, dominated by the dynamic sculpture of the
Residenzbrunnen, the largest Baroque fountain north of the
Alps. The Residenz building, built in 1596, was once the
palace of the Bishops. Nearby stands the Cathedral dating
from 1614. Next, visit St. Peter’s Abbey, next to the cemetery
portrayed in the film The Sound of Music and where
most of Mozart’s religious works are premiered.
in Salzburg, Perhaps you will stop in at one of Salzburg’s
many cafes for ice coffee or hot chocolate and cake, a tradi-

up to the mighty Hohensalzburg Fortress, the former residence of the
powerful Archbishops of Salzburg. From the terrace high above the city
Leisurely breakfast at your hotel. Late morning, you will be transferred
to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, Austria’s most eminent Gothic edifice, houses
a wealth of art treasures. The architectural history begins in the 12th
century, the oldest remaining parts date from the 13th century: the Giant
Gate (Riesentor) and the Towers of the Heathens (Heidentürme), both
Romanesque in style. The South Tower (Südturm), at 448 feet, was completed
in 1433 (the Viennese have given it the nickname Steffl, which also
denotes the whole cathedral). During the 18th century, the cathedral
was decorated with Baroque altarpieces - the panel of the main altar
shows the stoning of its namesake St. Stephen, the first martyr of
Christendom. 12:00 to 12:40pm - Rehearsal at Leo Hall.
Habsburgs. The name comes from the fountain that was built over a
spring in the early 1600s. The castle was built by Ferdinand II in 1637. It
came into its full grandiose incarnation during the reign of Maria
Theresa, when she added the massive mirrors, frescoed ceilings and
gender roommate when we receive your application, but we do not guarantee a roommate can
be matched. If a single room must be assigned due to a roommate's cancellation,
TRAVELER HEALTH ADVISORY: All passengers must ensure that they are medically
and physically fit for travel and that such traveling will not endanger themselves or others
as Pilgrimages entail a lot of walking, climbing up/down stairs, etc. Any passenger who
is physically challenged must submit a certificate from his/her medical doctor stating that
he/she is capable of taking part in this pilgrimage without assistance. If special assistance
is required, the passenger must travel with a companion willing and capable of providing
any necessary assistance.
insurance when they travel since the tour operator is not responsible for lost deposits,
damaged luggage or trip interruption. Peter’s Way Tours offers an optional
well-being of the passenger while traveling worldwide. The plan payments are
based on total package price, including taxes, fuel surcharges, single supplements,
deviation fees, late charges, etc. The plan payment for total package prices from $0
to $1500.00 is $100; $1501.00 to $2500.00 is $175; $2501.00 to $3500.00 is $225; $3501.00
conditions. However, the insurance plan can be purchased at any time thereafter,
excluding coverage for pre-existing conditions, until final payment has been made.
Plan payments will not be accepted after final payment has been made. All plan
payments are non-refundable. If you choose to extend your stay or embark on a
pre-tour program, travel insurance can be purchased for an additional $4.00 per day.
