Renewable Energy Quarterly Letter From the Editor Dear Readers, This September 2009 issue marks the first anniversary of the Renewable Energy Quarterly. Hunton and Williams is proud to be one of the only law firms in the country that offers a quarterly publication devoted exclusively to renewable energy. Our authors strive to shed light on the leading legal issues affecting industry participants and contribute to the renewable industry dialogue as a whole. Our publications cover a wide range of subject matters, including current legislation, federal and state policy initiatives and issues affecting the investment community. When the first edition was published in September of 2008, our country, along with the rest of the world, had just entered one of its most difficult economic cycles and uncertain times for the global power market. In spite of this setback, key players in this sector have stayed the course and forged ahead, bolstered in part by the creative energy and innovative strategies of industry participants as well as support from federal and state policy makers and industry associations. As a firm, Hunton and Williams is dedicated to the growth and success of sustainable energy solutions. Sincerely, Thomas B.Trimble Hunton In The News Hunton & Williams Hosts Series of Homeland Security Policy Breakfasts In June, Hunton & Williams kicked off a series of Homeland Security Policy Breakfasts featuring a variety of topics. The most recent event took place in our D.C. office and focused on “The Smart Grid: Meeting the Challenge of Modernizing Electric Systems While Protecting Their Security.” Each event includes a panel of experts in the industry and concludes with a Q&A session. The next event is scheduled for September 24, 2009, and will cover “Cloud Computing: Are the Security Risks Real or Exaggerated?” Hunton & Williams Pro Bono Leader George Hettrick Named American Lawyer Lifetime Achiever Hunton & Williams is pleased to announce The American Lawyer® named George H. Hettrick, firm partner and chair of the firm’s Community Service Committee, a 2009 Lifetime Achiever. The annual award recognizes lawyers who have made significant contributions to public service while also building an outstanding legal practice. Following a 25-year career as a corporate finance lawyer, Hettrick took on the challenge of leading the firm’s pro bono practice on a full-time basis. Nearly 100 percent of our U.S. lawyers participated in our pro bono program last year, donating nearly 73,000 hours. H&W Shortlisted in Corporate Counsel’s Annual Who Represents Whom Hunton & Williams was listed among the top ten most-used outside counsel by Fortune 100® companies in Corporate Counsel’s 2009 “Who Represents Whom.” The magazine annually researches the nation’s largest companies to identify their “go-to” firms in each of the following practice areas: commercial law and contracts litigation; corporate transactions; employment and labor litigation; intellectual property litigation and patent prosecution; and torts and negligence. Robert Grey Nominated to Legal Services Corporation and Appointed Interim Director of Leadership Council on Legal Diversity Hunton & Williams partner Robert Grey was recently nominated to the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) by President Barack Obama. Once appointed to the LSC board, Grey will serve alongside 10 directors to set policy for the country’s single-largest provider of civil legal aid to the underprivileged. Grey was also recently appointed interim executive director of the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity. A newly formed organization of chief legal officers and law firm managing partners, the council is dedicated to creating a truly diverse legal profession. Grey’s responsibilities will include increasing the council’s membership, establishing partnerships to advance its mission, creating best practices for the promotion of diversity in the legal profession and helping identify a permanent executive director. 32 Renewable Energy Quarterly www.hunton.com
